Simplee Horrible!! I went there twice (fool me twice) and had 2 terrible experiences. But, this last one took the cake. 1st visit: 2 weeks ago I asked for a "glam wave twist out" with clip in extensions added. Diane, the owner recommended a hair company for the extensions and I followed her recommendation. Prior to my appointment I asked Diane if the hair texture of the extensions were correct for my hair. She said yes. Appointment day approaches: Time of the appointment - 10am. When did I leave the shop? 9pm!! She twisted, took it out, re-twisted, looked left, looked right, up and down and basically seemed like she didn't know what she was doing. Diane's reasoning was that the extension hair didn't match my texture. I paid $261 dollars and left out feeling dissatisfied with the style. (Also her attitude was horrid) however, I gave her the benefit of the doubt and returned 2 weeks later. 2nd visit: Today. Now this is the part!! This time around I asked for a Sade ponytail (as it states on her site) which is basically a low ponytail that is braided with extension hair. I will let the pictures talk for themselves. I paid $125!! Again, she blamed the braiding hair, she blamed my hair length and everything else except her lack of skill. $125 and 3.5 hours later and voila!! Client beware!!! read more

I have been doing my own hair for a long time now and since returning to natural over seven years ago, I've only visited one "natural" salon that made me reluctant to try any other for many years. A girlfriend of mine actually gave me the info for a different stylist that she uses regularly but upon calling up for a consultation, he referred me to Diane based on what I wanted to have done. I subsequently called Simplee Beautiful and made an appointment for the following week. I was initially relieved that I could just walk in and not have to have a consultationIt was a 2pm appointment and I got there pretty early but had to wait. I've never seen a set up like this before. It's like a salon mall. The location is a commercial building that housing various businesses. The salons are located on the lobby floor, towards the left at the Sola Salon Studios. There has to be at least twenty mini salons that make up the entire area. They're pretty cute, well-kept and clean. I basically just had to wait until the owner came to begin the process. She arrived at my appointment time and we spoke about what I would be getting done. I wanted to get a colour and have my hair lightened. We decided to cut a significant amount off because I want to make sure I'm starting off healthy. To reiterate, I do my hair myself so I treat, wash and style my own hair at home. Based on the state of my hair and what I explained my regiment to be, Diane offered up some key suggestions to help improve the state and health of my hair. She told me what I was doing wrong and told me exactly what to do and what products to use on my own based on my active lifestyle in order to achieve better results. She gave me a paper an pen so I could write everything down. I didn't walk out until 730 which was difficult. My stomach was growling and this is another reason why I kind of dislike natural salon visits because let's face it, it's going to take a longer time than if the hair is chemically treated or naturally straight which is another reason I prefer to do my own hair on my own time. If I'm going to be anywhere for that amount of time, Id rather be enjoying myself but to at least be in the comfort of your own home makes it a bit more tolerable. In her defense, my colour took a bit longer than expected because she did not use bleach to lift my hair colour, which I respect A LOT, and because my hair was so difficult, she had to process it for longer. In the end, I loved my colour and as for the cut; it's growing on me and I know it's for the best. The price, however, was a little outrageous. I ended up spending $300 for a cut, colour and twist-out style which I think is extravagant. I was prepared to pay close to that for what I originally intended to have done (dyeing clip-in pieces to match and style everything) but a big chunk of that got taken off the table while we were discussing possibilities so, I have no idea where the styling portion of my balance came out to $135.00. She had already quoted me $100 + $10 for the colour and extra processing time plus $55 for the cut. I am definitely willing to pay for something if it's worth it. I probably would have been a return customer had the end price not been so ridiculous and also not explained considering we changed the original plan, the fact that I was e-mailed a receipt without itemization and the length of time I spent, I probably would not come back. I basically spent 6 hours of my last vacation day, sweating under a dryer and steamer. As I said before, I was given a lot of gems of information during my visit and I definitely took notes, asked questions and picked Diane's brain for anything that might help improve my natural hair journey and I plan to implement her suggestions in my regiment, beginning this weekend after my heavy workout days. While I wouldn't go back, I am at least happy that I left looking good and got a chance to get information that will ultimately help me in the long run. If you do decide to check out this salon or any of the other salons located in Sola Salon Studios, make sure the stylist is aware of exactly what you want and you're both satisfied with what will be done and how much each service will cost. So, if you call up for an appointment and they schedule you, you may want to ask for a consultation first so that everyone is on the same page. I said before that I was initially relieved that she Diane did not require a consultation prior to an appointment but hindsight, I think I could have made a more educated decision on whether or not the price would be worth it as well as knowing exactly for what I am paying. read more

After venting with a friend about my experience, (with utter sadness, frustration and shame) she said she sometimes writes a review to feel better. As a way of trying to see what I missed and how I ended up distressed after the salon, I looked at the Google reviews and now I'm here scrolling these reviews, and voila, I wish I had read the one below at the bottom of my review which pretty much echoes my experience. That was 2017, mine was today. Summary: Overpriced, lack of clarity about the charges up front, wasted time and an unsatisfactory experience. I was running late so out of respect for their time, I took a lyft instead of the transit. I wasted my money because the stylist was much later than me. To fill the time, my hair was wash and I was put under the steamer. I protested a bit because I know already that a wash costs more money, when what I really wanted was to talk to the stylist, get clarity about costs, agree to the treatment prior to action, then proceed. Due to her tardiness, this wasn't possible. I was told that the wash and steaming was part of the treatment without being told about the costs tacked on. It's partly my fault which is why I didn't pitch a fit at the end when they charged me ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY FIVE DOLLARS ($185). I should have asked more questions, clarified, and negated what was happening prior to the end, but I tend to trust and let people do their jobs and trust that they are being professionals. I can tell that Diane knows what she's talking about when it comes to natural hair, but her preference for her way (cutting much more off my hair than I was comfortable with) instead of getting and trusting feedback from the client is why I'm writing this review. I wanted the cut fixed, which I respect she was trying to do, but I wish she would have HEARD my concern for more hair being cut off and given me an option to have part of the breakage cut today and another part cut later when my hair grew back. Again, my fault for not protesting- I'm clearly too trusting of stylists. Stylists have to make money somehow and this salon does it by upcharging quite a bit. The price says "luxury" but the treatment does not match. The shampoo and condition was not luxurious: it was rough. Water and product in my ears, rough hands/treatment of my head. The wait was not luxurious. You sit in the chair and wait just like any other salon with no sense of urgency to respect your time (my appointment ran 1 full hour over- I had plans). The check for satisfaction was also not luxurious. I told my friend it was "highway robbery". If I had known what my experience would be like prior to the appointment today, I would NOT have gone. Next time I ever get my hair done, I'll be patient and find a stylist from the internet and read every single review so I know what I'm in for. I also know that from now on, any place I go, I'm asking for every cost up front, and I'm clarifying exactly what I want with urgency, clarity and much more assertiveness than I did today because I see that some people do what makes them feel good and not necessarily what you want. If I see something not going the way I want one minute in, I'm stopping the stylist and clarifying what I want before I get to the end instead of like I did today. I waited - out of trust- to see what it would look like hoping it wouldn't be so bad. I don't doubt that Diane is an expert at hair. I have an issue with the "luxury" price that doesn't match the experience, plus the lack of clarity around the price (I feel taken advantage of) and I really wish she HEARD me say I want to keep the length because now I have to rock what feels to me like an ugly hairstyle for the sake of healthy hair until it grows out again which as we all know is unpleasant. The cut was precise though. ----2017 previewed review---- Terrible experience! I went to have my hair cut down due to damage and get a short natural style. The woman (owner) did a horrible cut and charged $125 for a wash, condition, and cut! She was 20 minutes late for the appointment and took several calls (and stopped working on my head) several time during our 3-4 hours together. The cut is extremely unflattering and she didn't bother to "shape it up". I showed her pictures of ideas for styles but she said she wouldn't be following those styles. I reviewed once, already, when I had my consultation with Diane which went great. A week later I went to get a crochet style. Diane was great, she took her time with the process and my hair came out fabulous. I was watching her in the mirror while she was cutting my hair. She had such intensity and focus and it all show in my new do. I went into the salon with maybe two inches of hair on top and none on the sides and came out with a funky curly look that I'm in love with. She's the most knowledgeable stylist I've experienced, I've had the misfortune of going to some hairdressers who claim to know what's best and really don't. I've been going to professionals for 30+ years, Diane knows what she's doing, she customizes treatments to fit your particular needs, there is no cookie cutter plan. I will not allow another person to come near me, my mom or my children with scissors. She understands how to care for my hair in a way that promotes health, which is most valuable to me. Last year I took a break from perming my hair and went into braids for about four months. When I was finally ready to go back to wearing my hair I wanted to find another option outside of getting a perm. I'm not ready to tackle going natural but I wanted to slowly move away from using perms. I decided to try the Chi Enviro Smoothing treatment which ended up being a great choice (check my profile for a before and after photo). I recommend this salon if you are looking for a place that can actually advise you about what works best for your hair and lifestyle. I visited this salon a few months ago to do the 'big chop'. I was very happy with my cut and received many compliments on my new look. I colored a small patch of hair in the front of my head and was given a tapered cut around the sides and back with the front and middle left with a longer length. I received the exact style I requested, which unfortunately, has not been my experience in the past at other salons. The hair stylist, Diane, was very friendly and provided me with a lot of tips on keeping my hair healthy and moisturized. Diane used high quality hair products, and she handled my hair with care, which is very important to me. Also, the salon was sleek and relaxing. Worst Experience EVER!!!! Wish I had followed my instincts and ran right out! Not sure if they are great for cutting, straightening, but STAY AWAY for coloring. Not only where they extremely rude!(mostly the owner), and made me wait over 2 hours after my original appointment, but my color was HORRIBLE!!!! So bad that I've had to wear hats. My hair looked like a zebra!!! I took plenty of pictures and discussed what I wanted (which was a natural brown, one color, not too far from my natural color (which didn't have any previous dye btw) single process. Couldn't have done a worst job if I had done it myself, at home, with my eyes closed! Color was orange and very stripey. Did not go back to get it fix with them, I would not let them touch my hair ever again! read more

I really wanted to give this one star but on the strength of Courtenay, the young lady that did my hair the first time, I will give two stars. I NEVER, repeat NEVER remember having my hair natural. Jerry Curls since elementary school and perms since. During pregnancy I couldn't get a perm and had extension twists. All in all, I hadn't permed my hair in over a year and was thrilled because I'd always wanted to go natural. I didn't have any idea what products to use and didn't even know what a twist out was until I went to this salon. Courtenay did a beautiful twist but even she had a bit of an air of arrogance when having to explain things to me. Almost like, why don't you know this? Well it was nothing compared to Diana. OMGosh. I had called for an appointment which took a lot of time to book because I had to get the terminology correct and they were helping me through it. So why, when I sit in Diana's chair the next day is she asking me what are you here for? That was just the beginning of the 25 minute interrogation I went through. "What did Courtenay do when you came? She didn't do a trim? What products do you use? She didn't tell you what products to use? I know because I trained her. What do you mean you don't want your hair like this (after showing her my own twist out attempt)? It's not hard to do natural hair, if you say it's hard then it'll be hard. What's hard about this (as she rudely took a section of my hair and twisted it)? It wasn't what she was saying, it was the way she was saying it. Then she went to a cabinet and pulled out some products with a bit of an attitude and put them on the table next to me. She kept grilling me and I kept telling her I don't remember everything Courtenay and I discussed. It's not like it was last week, it was three months ago. I told her it was the last snow storm, around that time. I was coming there for her expertise and didn't understand why she was grilling me, putting her head in her hands when I didn't answer a question the way she wanted. Just do my damn hair already, that's what I'm here for. My goodness! Then she asked me again what I wanted to get done and I'm thinking wtf does it say on the gotdamn appointment that I made yesterday good grief. So I AGAIN explained a curl and go and I wanted my ends clipped and then, "Courtenay didn't give you a trim? WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MATTER WHAT HAPPENED THREE MONTHS AGO. EVEN IF SHE GAVE ME A TRIM DON'T YOU THINK I'D NEED ANOTHER ONE BY NOW? She also rudely went into the fact that she had quoted $65 for Courtenay's prices but "those are not my prices, my prices are higher" as she arrogantly placed her hand on her chest. Finally I got up and said I don't have time for this. I had to get back to work and already 25 minutes was wasted with this ridiculous back and forth. She stopped me at the door and was starting to explain something but by that time I had enough. She said, "If we're not gelling..." I cut her off and said we're not gelling, have a nice day" and left. So ridic because it's obvious they know how to do hair but it's almost like they think they know their job so well that they can look down their noses at anyone coming in. And GOD FORBID you weren't cultured enough to know anything about natural hair. Well I'll be damned, you are the lowest of the low. That is how they act. So, I went here for information about hair coloring prices. I walked in and was addressed by a very pretentious woman, Diane (the owner), who informed me that she was an author and had 30 years of experience doing natural hair. She then gasped and wrinkled her face in disgust whilst looking at my hair. When I called her out on this UNPROFESSIONAL behavior, she attempted to insult me. Determined to see what all the fuss was about, I decided that though she was clearly crazy (a jerk), maybe she was a knowledgeable jerk. Later she advised that a 10 min consultation was free and 30 min would cost $50 LOL. She then attempted to put a comb through my coily hair even after I told her that gel was currently in it and water was necessary. An experienced cosmotologist would already know this. Needless to say I wasnt impressed, there is nothing to see here, and I won't be spending my money with her authorship. This is the type of person who will unapologetically jack up your hair and tell you to take fish oil as a remedy. read more

I will never return to this salon again! Both Diane "the master stylist" and her assistant Courtney were unprofessional and down right rude! It was my initial visit and I was there for 9 HOURS for a weave with only one other client! I explained what I wanted and it was as if they were speaking down to me and weren't really trying to listen to what I had to say! Whatever smoothing treatment Diane put in my hair did absolutely nothing! So I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't that at all or she just didn't do it right. The smoothing treatment was a waste of time and money! And the weave did not last as long as it should have and didn't lay the way I requested. If they could not have given me what I wanted they should have been professional and honest enough to tell me and I would have thanked them for their time and moved on. At that time, I just relocated back to NYC and was looking for a salon that specialized in natural hair. Also, my hair was in desperate need of a color correction after a horrible experience at another salon. Two years later, I am still a faithful client. Diane's years of experience and knowledge about all hair textures, styles, and cuts is incomparable. Courtney is also a talented stylist in her own right. They do EVERYTHING: weaves, precision cuts, ammonia-free color, braids, locs, faux locs, twists, smoothing treatments, sodium-free relaxers, and more ...and they do it well! I recently visited this salon actually after reading the reviews on yelp because i decided that I wanted to cut my hair. My experience was amazing. The staff was super nice, made you feel at home. From the shampoo and deep condition under the steamer (which was new for me btw i lovedd it) to the scalp massage and the aftermath. It was great. When it was time for the cut I showed diane the cut i was looking for and she walked me through everything. Explained my hair texture, what products i should use if i wanted to wear it curly, and how to maintain the cut. I LOVEEE my cut, and so does everyone else. I would recommend this salon to all my lovely natural ladies and those who are relaxed as well. Only reason im giving 4 stars is because of the wait. And because i had to pay 15 dollars for parking...did i mention i hate walmart parking lot? read more

To say that I am disappointed would be an understatement! I found Diane after moving to the Westchester area in 2014. I needed a precision cut and decided to give SimpleeBeautiful a try. My experience that evening left me pleased and believing that I had found a place that would cater to my natural hair care needs. I was pleased enough with Diane to recommend her to friends and family, however, I recently went to SimpleeBeautiful for protective styling and was sorely disappointed. I requested a mohawk styling....Cornrows on the sides and two strand twists in the middle. The first attempt at creating this style did not go well at which point I contacted Diane, the proprietor, the very next morning to express my concerns. She offered to correct the issue a week later. I arrived for my appointment at 10:30am and did not leave until 7:50pm and unfortunately the outcome was WORSE than the initial attempt!!! The cornrows at the sides were not uniform and it was very obvious! The braids on the left side was MUCH larger than the braids on the right. The braids themselves were not installed neatly and it appeared that they were done by an amateur. Two days after the install one of the twists in the back fell out! More than anything I would have appreciated transparency. I would have preferred to be told that the style that I requested did not fall within their expertise than to have been subjected to TWO failed attempts. I would still recommend Diane for basic natural hair care, however, unfortunately, I would NEVER recommend her for anything beyond that. read more

This is not something I usually do but I need to get a point across. I went to this salon for service and got nothing but grief. This is a salon that primarily caters to the black community... which is not what I have a problem with . I do have a problem with being talked down to .. treated rudely and made to feel unwelcome. Comments were made about my hair and the way I style it...Who does that ? Certainly should not come out of the mouth of the owner / stylist . So what do you do or say when the outcome of your hair is in the hands of this person ? You dont say much to them but warn everyone else . Which is what I feel cpmpelled to do. The only thing that made me free any better is that she was equally as rude to her satff. Which should really not make anyone feel better. With all this being said... when a deal sounds too good to be true... its just that !! No discount is worth the trouble or humilation read more
