Simply Barbecue is a most welcome addition to the Holden Beach area restaurant scene. Technically a food truck, Simply Barbecue is located next to the BB&T branch on the Holden Beach causeway, set back from the road near the entrance to Harbor Island Mini Golf. The simple, straightforward menu is located at the front entrance, along with a daily specials board. For our first visit, we opted to try the "Old Man," so we could sample everything. It's advertised to feed two people, but please know portions are plentiful. At this writing, my husband and I have made three additional meals from this flavorful bounty, with more leftovers ready to deploy for one final hurrah. My favorites were the ribs, potato salad and baked beans. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone delicious, and I enjoyed the unique spice blend. The potato salad hit all my comfort notes - creamy, fresh potatoes, crunchy onion and pickles, with a mild seasoning to accompany the meats. The baked beans were less sweet than I've had at other BBQ joints, and I loved the smoky vinegar flavor. My husband preferred the brisket, especially the burnt ends, which I found quite good as well. We both liked the cole slaw, which is tart and crunchy, with a hint of sweetness. All sides kept well in the fridge, and I found the potato salad actually improved. The best news - for me, anyway - is that the only items containing gluten are the bread used for sandwiches, the cornbread, and the apple crisp. So if you're gluten free, take heart, and order up some tasty, tasty barbecue and sides. You'll be glad you did. Even more great news -- Simply Barbecue is open during the offseason! Wow! First, let me start off by saying that the owner/workers are extremely kind. That right there deserves all the recognition and support. My husband and I got there a couple of minutes after they officially closed but after speaking with the person there, they were kind enough to still prepare us a family meal for two, but the servings were so generous, that it actually fed my entire family of four :) They didn't have any brisket left (understandably so) but we were able to try the pulled pork, ribs, potato salad, and cornbread. They even had some apple fritter left. Everything was absolutely delicious and full of yummy flavor. The side sauces were also to die for! We are from up north so to be able to try some delicious southern food was our treat during our trip. We visit the area often and will definitely be back here! Such a treat. Tonight I picked up 4 pounds of barbecue from Simply barbecue. When I got back to the house, I realized I forgot to get the sauces. I called and went back and picked up the sauce. The nice folks at Simply Barbecue gave us some corn bread for having to come back. Everyone in our group enjoyed the barbecue very much. The corn bread was sweet and very tasty. Do not be fooled by the appearance. By far, bar none, the BEST BBQ I've ever eaten in my life. We got "Family Meal To Go" for a family 6 and family 4 for the 4th of July. 6 adults and 7 kids were needing to be fed. It came with pulled pork, brisket, full rack of ribs, sides-coleslaw and potato salad. Corn bread and apple crisp. AMAZING!!!!! Some of the pickier (children) family members HOUSED the meat and ate a ton. Here's a breakdown of each item: Brisket-don't waste your time even getting knives to cut the meat. When I lifted it up to put on family members' plates it fell apart. Moist and juicy. Whatever they use to cook the meat on, or if they smoke it, you have this great aroma and taste to it. Amazing. Pulled pork-tender and flavorful. Melts in your mouth. Consensus was this was mostly everyone favorite but the brisket was a very very close second. Ribs-meat falls off the bone. Flavorful and juicy. Both bbq sauces they give with meal were great. We're from Jersey so we liked their thicker bbq sauce better but for those of you who like vinegar based ones, I think you'll love it. Potato salad. Excellent. Great taste. Cole slaw. Excellent. Great taste. Corn bread-they forgot to pack it. Called us up to tell us they did, and insisted to drive over to our beach house and deliver it. They totally could have not told us and kept it, but they were super honest and fixed the mistake. This is a sad excuse for bbq. If you like rubbed bbq that has a metallic taste this is the place for you. Buy half a rack it's sliced buy a whole rack it isn't sliced, go figure. Their sides are bland, macaroni and cheese has no cheese flavor and is runny like frozen and microwaved. The beans taste canned coleslaw is a cup of mayo with a couple pieces of cabbage. My family and I got the 6 person meal to go yesterday and wow we were impressed. The brisket was tender so no need for a knife, the ribs fell off the bone and the pulled pork was absolutely delicious. Not to mention, the sides were hefty portions and also yummy. The potato salad was my fave but the cole slaw was nice because the cabbage was crunchy and fresh and the beans were sweet. The corn bread was also great! We saved the apple crisp for today because we were so full so I'll come back and comment on that. But I'm assuming that'll also be great. On my way to the beach decided to stop and try this place. It was very hard to find as my GPS kept taking me to the adjacent trailer park. This place is a mobile food truck that backs up to the trailer park. Once I found it......I ordered the sampler plate $18 to give it a fair review. It came with a generous amount of Brisket, 2 ribs and pulled/chopped pork, 2 sides (I got the beans and cole slaw) and a large piece of cornbread. The two ladies working the truck could not have been nicer. I took my food to a nearby enclosed dining shack. The highlight was the Brisket. It was moist and very flavorful. I found the ribs and pork to be good, but the pork was over seasoned and ribs to be on the dry side. I was disappointed in the beans, obviously they were from a can that were doctored up somewhat, but still tasted like a can of beans I could open at home. The cornbread was moist and a nice complement to the meal. The coleslaw was also good but could have used more seasoning too. Overall a good solid meal and worth a try. read more

Have been coming to Holden since I was a small child, so I am familiar with the local restaurants and always notice when a new one pops up. Simply Barbecue is a little out of sight because it is way behind the newly renovated putt-putt course near wings, but the smoker sign with fog machine should grab your attention (LOL). I got the dinner tray with the pulled pork, a side of baked beans, and a side of corn bread (note: I got the oil based BBQ sauce). All of what I just mentioned was delicious and the serving size was awesome for the price (I think the tray was $14ish). From what I understand, this is a temporary location (it is basically a trailer that looks like it can be hitched to a large truck and moved) that will be moved at the end of the summer (i.e. they will leave the area and go somewhere else); however, if they are back next summer, you better believe I will be back :). read more

The beans were different, not sweet like you usually get at a bbq place, more savory, but very good (even had a bit of smoked sausage in there). I got the vinegar sauce, which is really tart, I won't get that sauce next time. Luckily I had some Texas Pete at home. Absolutely some of the best BBQ I've ever had. We got the Pulled Pork meal and the Full Rack of Ribs meal. We got both orders with the sweet BBQ sauce which has notes of apple or peach and was delicious. The pulled pork was moist, tender, and delicious and barely needed any sauce. The ribs were nice and smoky, fatty, and were pull off the bone with the perfect bite/chew. They were sold out of baked beans, so we got coleslaw and potato salad for sides. Both sides were lacking a little bit in flavor, so we added both the sweet BBQ sauce and salt to both and then they were delicious. Prices were a little higher than usual because of COVID and meat shortages (ransomware attack) but I would gladly pay it again for this quality of an experience. Utensils were provided and we ate in the enclosed picnic area "Our Happy Place" to the right of the food truck. Tables were clean, fans were running, and the environment was perfectly set up to keep bugs out, and for socially-distant food consumption.
