Yin and Yang - Salt and Pepper
    Heather B.

This was an exceptional place. The food was outstanding. We stopped by last night after visiting Salem and if this was located where we lived, we would be regulars. The best Persian food I've ever had. This restaurant is in a small, strip of shops in Peabody. The outside is a bit deceptive because it's not fancy, but you open the door and walk into a nice, modern atmosphere. The falafel appetizer was delicious. We got the Barg combo and shared it. I couldn't even finish my half. The steak and chicken were cooked perfectly, juicy and flavorful! The rice and grilled tomato were delicious. The decor and service were both incredible. They had the restaurant decorated for Halloween and it was really cute! I was a fan of the Yin and Yang salt and pepper shakers. I need to find a set for myself! So fun! I can't imagine anyone living in the area and not eating here all the time. The prices are a little higher but well worth it for the quality! If you are visiting Salem and looking for a divine meal right outside of the hectic city limits of Salem, eat here! You won't be disappointed!!

A pleasant surprise- this is a fancy, great food restaurant. Don't come here if you're thinking about cheap kabobs in styrofoam containers. I had the soltani, which is a combination of the koobideh and barg kebabs- one tender seasoned steak, one seasoned ground beef- with rice and a charred tomato. I've had Persian food a lot in other cities- this place was very good. Don't forget to ask for some sumac (sue-mack) and use generously. Sumac is a dried fruit seasoning. It gives the rice and meat an extra flavor profile. They said they are getting their alcohol license soon which will make the bar area extra nice. I bet it will be lively. I will be coming here again :)

It's a great experience. The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. Amazing food taste like heaven and unbelievable service that you think you are a guest in a Persian home. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and kind. This place is great! Atmosphere is very friendly. You can tell making the customers happy is their main priority. Food is pretty good. Ali agha made a great memory for us. Absolutely the best Persian restaurant in East Coast

    Kashke Bademjoon (Eggplant Dip)

Delicious Persian cuisine served in an unforgettable atmosphere, right in the heart of Peabody, MA. We had the Kashke Bademjoon (Eggplant Dip) along with two of the signature kabob dishes. The Kabob Barg (sirloin steak) was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The incredibly generous owner also brought us a full plate of tahdig (crispy rice) - anyone who knows Persian food knows how prized tahdig is! Can't wait to be back soon.

Very charming, clean and relaxed dining experience. We the eggplant dip with pita bread and the house soup for appetizers. That was followed by the falafel plate which came with salad and rice and a combo platter with many skewers of meat (chicken, beef and kiboudeh. Every dish that we tried was flavorful and delicious. All was deliciously prepared and simply presented to allow for one to enjoy the meal. Everyone in our party felt the same..... we will be back for more. If you are considering this restaurant.... Just go and let your tastebuds be entertained and satisfied with a wonderful meal and transport you to Persia. The owner was kind and attentive and a superior host. Go and let yourself be treated to a grand meal.

Unfortunately, my first experience did not reflect the many positive reviews. When I walked in, the first thing I was asked was "pickup?" I politely said no, that I wanted to place an order. I had to repeat myself several times, and the older woman at the counter either seemed frustrated, distracted, or maybe just having a rough day. There was little direction given to a first-time customer, and I found myself awkwardly trying to figure out where the menu board was and how the ordering process worked. Eventually, I stepped aside to look over the menu. The older woman continued helping the customers in front of me, which was completely understandable. What confused me was that the younger employee made eye contact with me, nodded toward me as if acknowledging I needed help, then asked if anyone had helped me yet. I explained that the other employee was probably about to, but needed a moment. Before I could even finish, she cut me off and said, "Oh, she can help you then," and immediately went back to scrolling on her phone while I continued standing there waiting. That was the disappointing part for me. If you ask who's next at the register, acknowledge someone is waiting, and another employee is already busy helping others, it creates a poor first impression when the available employee chooses not to assist and instead goes back to their phone. It came across as a lack of urgency and customer service. Maybe it was just an off day. I'm not writing this to attack the business because the food may very well be excellent, and clearly many people love this place. But first impressions matter, especially for new customers walking in excited to try your establishment for the first time. I truly hope the service experience improves because I wanted to like this place a lot more than I did today.

Atmosphere/ vibe - extremely unprepossessing. Sort of like your grandma's kitchen? But toasty warm, yes! Service - good, pretty prompt. It took a few minutes to bring the order to the table, which I took as a sign it was made to order, almost. Food - ok, but quite bland. The best thing in the stew was the preserved lemon or lime. Wow! Price/ value - disappointing. Paying 3USD for a hot tea, and then when offered more, it showed up on the bill as 6USD. Really? It comes out of the one tea pot/ diluted with hot water. The side of some pita w/butter was gratis. Would I come back? Not sure. On the check was the name Molana, which was the Persian place in Wtown Sq. The owner wanted to retire, but decided to take over the defunct Shiraz Persian Cuisine. Now it's just opened as Caspian Persian Cuisine. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like Molana took over all Persian restaurants in Wtown. Perhaps my expectations were wrong - I had in mind a sort of kebob/shawarma/souvlaki/gyros menu at really good prices. Maybe with Trumpflation, those days are long since gone

I would recommend calling beforehand to ask about the wait. Although we commuted from Cambridge, this meal was worth it. For two people, we got: - Black Seed Cornbread: it's soft, sweet yet savory. I've never had cornbread like this, and the first bite into this was unforgettable. You must get this. - Honey Nut Hummus: this was honestly fine and I'd probably try a different dip next time. - Warm Gyro bread: well seasoned and great to share between two. I normally don't like gyro but I enjoyed this. - Lamb al pastor: this was a favorite. It was sweet and the lamb was tender. We were really impressed with the sauce. - Brussel sprout bravas: this was okay. I liked the crunchy nuts and the star of this dish was once again the sauce/seasoning rather than the brussel sprouts. With all of these dishes, we ordered enough for two, with a few bites leftover. If you have a smaller appetite, you could get away with ordering a plate less. Overall, I loved the dining experience here. Even though I'm not typically a small plates mediterranean person, I appreciated Sarma - from its beautiful interior space and open kitchen concept, to the liveliness of the restaurant on a random weekday night. Definitely come here if you're in the area (or even if you're not!)

Reservations were already fully booked for the next month out, so we decided to take our chance and see if we could get bar seating around opening time. It was already pretty packed 10 minutes after opening, and the host told us that bar seating would open up in about an hour, but we would have to wait at the restaurant. Meanwhile, the wait for a table would be almost 2 hours, but we would be notified when our table is ready so we put ourselves down on the table waitlist and went elsewhere in the mean time. We came back after 2 hours, and the table was ready exactly then! I ordered some sort of Mango Mocktail and then my friend and I shared the Black Sea Cornbread and Roasted Sunchokes. Food is very unique with creative twists on all their dishes. The cornbread was delicious - it basically melted in my mouth and I liked how it actually had a kick to it. Very tasty, but just a tad bit salty. I have never had Sunchokes before but they were delicious! Very colorful presentation. A lot of the sauce was at the bottom so it could have been mixed more evenly. Mango mocktail was sweet and refreshing! Overall, Sarma has great, flavorful food and plenty of vegetarian options. It is unassuming and semi-tucked away; you wouldn't actually notice them unless you're actively looking. However, that unassuming feeling disappears once you find yourself inside the establishment. There is this feeling that I cannot explain that sends shivers up my spine. One can't help but feel welcome here. Rose is an amazingly friendly soul that just puts you at ease with the tone of her voice. Even the other customers are friendly with the way they acknowledge you as you walk by towards wherever you're seated. There is happy banter in the air and friends of the establishment would often show up and make themselves immediately at home. You get the point. You're welcome here. But what makes it so special to me now is always the food. And for what they already offer to start, that states quite a bit to what I think of this place. There are many Persian/Middle Eastern fare in this area and most serve the usual so nothing seems to really stand out. That is, at least, until you order their Jujeh Kabob (grilled Cornish hen). Sounds simple, looks simple, but the depth of flavor and the tonguegasmic moments you have partaking of the dish changes their level in the culinary game in the area. It was so good, so so good, I felt completely blown away. I raved about it to Rose, who then told the chef-owner, and then told her I'd be back the next day just to try it again. No way it could be that good I thought. I had to come back again to make sure it was indeed the case (instead of ordering it for "dessert" right in the moment). Well, I showed up at lunch again the next day for exactly the same dish. I just had to. I was hooked. I was made a perma-fan. As I write this, I know I'm about to do what most crazy foodies do as they gain traction in their mind. Get ready and go get some more. Time to wrap this up and head there. See you around some time. Definitely recommend their Jujeh Kabob beyond words.
