    Farmer Don's breakfast
    Amanda H.

We arrived in Salem early in the morning and needed breakfast. We chose Red's based on reviews and I'm glad we did. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I ordered the Farmer Don which included French toast, eggs my way, home fries and 3 of the largest sausage patties I've ever gotten at a restaurant. The food came out fast and hot. The French toast was tasty as were the eggs and potatoes, however the sausage patties were huge and full of flavor. I would recommend this spot to anyone visiting Salem and wanted good food and friendly service.

Huuuuge menu of food and drinks! The drinks specifically there was like 2.5 pages. Only thing is that they took some time to make-- we got our drinks finally after already eating our entree. Our waitress was amazing and so was the woman who brought out our food, they are friendly and have smiles on their faces. The food was great, we got an order of 2 pancakes to share, they were huge. I got the bama Benny which was cornbread with corned beef hash and poached eggs. The flavors were insane. Only thing is I wish the home fries (potatoes) were crispier! You could probably ask them for crispy ones when you order. Would definitely go back! I see why everyone loves this place.

Food. Breakfast was delicious. I love that they griddle. We don't have that in Florida. I ordered pumpkin French toast. Super good! I didn't really like the sausages. Service: It was fine. They were nice. Ambiance: It felt historic. Very nice interior and exterior. Feels. Like a hole in the wall. Comfy and cozy.

    Monte Cristo Sandwich

During my last day in Boston, I decided to make a small detour. I decided to hop on the train and take a half hour train ride out to Salem, being that I never been and figured to see what I was missing all this time. Stepping off the train, it was just after noon, lunchtime. Not knowing the area, I found a gift shop and while at checkout, asked all the associates what they recommended for lunch. All of them said the same thing, Red's. With that, I took off (also Yelping and found out they close at 1), and got my butt over there. Being that I was a party of 1 (easy peasy), I was placed at the breakfast bar. The menu is very much offers breakfast and lunch food. I decided to get a Monte Cristo sandwich as it got me some French Toast with a little extra. This might be the best Monte Cristo I have ever had. Light, savory, and the choice of home fries over french fries made it all better. The portion size is incredibly generous. I could only imagine what would have been if I came here during breakfast. At that point I would have eaten the whole menu. The idea was to eat something that would tie me over for my entire visit to Salem, as I figured to get back in Boston by dinner and enjoy dinner there while not ruining my day in Salem. To make a long story short, the plan worked.

i visited here for the first time before the morning rush. i typically go to the location on rt 1, but i've always wanted to try the original, it's always packed! i ordered 2 blueberry pancakes and coffee. the coffee is your basic cup of joe, the pancakes are HUGE and fluffy! i asked if they served real maple syrup, they said no, they would have to increase their prices if they did. there are a number of restaurants that provide tiny jars of real maple syrup for a $1.50-3 upcharge per person, it would really improve the pancake or french toast quality if they had that option. my pancakes came a little overdone, i still ate the first one but the one on the bottom was a little too overdone for me. the server agreed and had no issue with replacing it with a fresh one which i took to go since the restaurant started filling up. service was fantastic, i forgot his name though. blueberry pancakes 8/10 (would be higher with real syrup) red's sandwich shop in salem is a staple for a reason, it's historical significance and well-known for their homey breakfasts is sure to stay. ambiance: 4/5 food: 4/5 drinks: 3.5/5 service: 5/5 red's sandwich shop: 4.1/5

Last day of vacation so we ventured out for breakfast. This was the place to be. Very crowded but we were lucky to arrive and get seated immediately. When we left there was a line out the door. McKenzie was a great server! He was on top of everything. Food arrived at table very quick. I had the Volturi off the special menu. Omelet with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms and mozzarella. So flavorful. My husband enjoyed eggs with French toast and 3 large sausage links. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the establishment!

The staff was so accommodating! My friends and I got caught in the rain and they provided us with towels because we were soaking wet. Apple of my Eye 6/10: Graham cracker rim was too weird. The drink itself was decent. I don't think I'd order it again tbh. Sweater weather 8/10: You need this in your life. It was slightly sweet. Such a good, cozy meal. Ravioli itself was a bit tough to bite into but I think the flavor made up for it.

Delectable. Basically licked the plate clean.

amazing food and service and ambiance. I could eat another. Melissa was amazing and gorgeous

A solid breakfast and lunch diner type place. It's located in an old house and that adds to the charm. The sandwiches were slightly bland, and the chicken pot pie had a really thick gummy type texture. The mashed potatoes tasted like boxed. The hot dogs and breakfast plates looked good so I would stick with that.

Super busy on a late Sunday morning at the end of September. We were seated fairly quickly. Fast service, tasty food. Staff super friendly. I had the krabbie cakes. Delish. Cute decor. Historic building that dates back to the revolution.

Great service and a tasty breakfast! Visited while driving through Salem on a Monday morning and loved the experience. Our server was so kind and attentive, even offering to provide to-go cups for iced lattes once we finished our food. I enjoyed my biscuits and gravy, as well as my pistachio iced latte! It's a cute greasy spoon that feels authentic versus tourist-trap-y, which seems like a rare find in Salem. Highly recommend!

Pretty busy and the staff is super friendly but the experience feels a bit rushed, at least it did for us. Not in a bad way in all honesty, in an efficient manner - they're famous for a reason! The food is delicious and I also got a mimosa which was great! Love the local feel and it's our favorite place to go no matter what season it is!

Hi - what is the typical wait/crowd on a weekday morning (mid-Sep.) around 9 or 10am? Wondering if I'll be kicking myself for arriving at 10am and having to wait...

The typical wait times vary in the day and how many tourists in town etc but Red’s moves very quick even if there is a wait. You get great food, an awesome experience, and on your way.

I have friends visiting town and really want to bring them to Red's but one has a small service animal... does reds allow that?

    Yes, you can

How long is the wait during Halloween weekend usually? I see there is no reservations so I am just trying to plan accordingly. Thanks!

The city is absolutely crazy then, and filled with crowds. I would think the line would run down the street...

Can you get breakfast for lunch?

    Yes

Not very tourist friendly because we're all trying to figure out where we're going and looking at GPS and not even noticing that in dark letters on the sign it says there's a parking in the back that you don't notice until you've already found parking on a side street. Just a bit frustrating but not much to be done about it. I got a hot chocolate and it was fine, just a standard diner-like hot chocolate. Then the burrito came and although it was supposed to have cheese and chorizo in it, all I tasted was beans and pico de gallo. Barely tasted the eggs. It was HUGE also and the beans are filling so I couldn't finish it but I was just disappointed in the lack of balance in the flavors. I will say the apple cinnamon waffles were fantastic. The crumble on the top was my favorite part. I would just get that next time. I tried my mom's eggs benedict and did not like the hollandaise so I'm glad I didn't get that, I think the waffles might be their specialty.

Great location--right in the center. Two things of note--we stayed on the 6th floor, room 622. The 6th floor is the pet-friendly floor (we didn't have any pets), and my husband opened the door to get ice and there was a mini Doberman pinscher (cute!) desperate to get in our room. Then the owner came around the corner and could not figure out why he wanted to get in our room so bad. My husband went in search of the ice and saw the couple with the dog was staying in the room that would be exactly parallel to ours on the other side. I had a great sleep. Husband did as well except around 3 or so he was awoken to a hard poking several times on his shoulder. He said I was dead asleep and facing away so it was not me. We are both FAR from superstitious and don't believe in ghosts etc, so his mind went to someone broke in--but everything was locked up quite securely. He even checked under the bed! After the fact we found out about its ghost stories with specifically the 6th floor--specifically room 612. Again we were room 622, so does 612 (with the doggie) mirror ours? Other people have also mentioned getting poked as well, which we again didn't see about the hotel till after. So between the desperate dog and the poke, probably nothing--but most creeped out I've been in a while!! (Not so creeped out that we wouldn't go back!)

Fountain Place Restaurant is just a few blocks away and had zero line.
