Excellent Breakfast Spot! Food and service! There is plenty on the menu for everyone plus specials. The restaurant is much bigger than it looks on the outside! It's packed with people which says a lot about it on a weekday morning! Locals and tourists (like us!). We were seated right away, offered menus abd our server came back quickly to take our drink orders. I waa pleasantly surprised to see a nice selection of teas on the menu, only in New England. I ordered Ear Grey and it was perfectly seeped! Both my husband and I ordered the Farmer Don. Comes with Eggs, Protein (I ordered sausages and hubby had bacon), home fries and French Toast. Stopped by for lunch after our morning witch tour walk. It was hot in the restaurant, they had 2 fans, but the waitress was nice and accommodating with getting us seated and providing water right away. She even offered to fill up our water flask. We order and shared a steak and cheese sandwich with fries. And I got a cup of clam chowder. All 3 were delicious. Clam chowder was perfectly seasoned. Fries crispy and sandwich was perfect. The place was pretty busy so it took a few minutes to get greeted and sat and once we had a table it took another 5-10 minutes to get acknowledged. Our server was friendly though. We ordered the caprese sandwich and the chicken salad sandwich on wheat. Caprese was great! Chicken salad was barely any chicken salad on two slices of basic wheat bread. It was $14 and very overpriced for what it was. The sides were ordered (Cole slaw and rice pilaf) weren't great. We did get the "siren" iced coffee and those were delicious! I ordered the Farmer Don which included French toast, eggs my way, home fries and 3 of the largest sausage patties I've ever gotten at a restaurant. The food came out fast and hot. The French toast was tasty as were the eggs and potatoes, however the sausage patties were huge and full of flavor. Huuuuge menu of food and drinks! The drinks specifically there was like 2.5 pages. Only thing is that they took some time to make-- we got our drinks finally after already eating our entree. Our waitress was amazing and so was the woman who brought out our food, they are friendly and have smiles on their faces. The food was great, we got an order of 2 pancakes to share, they were huge. I got the bama Benny which was cornbread with corned beef hash and poached eggs. The flavors were insane. Only thing is I wish the home fries (potatoes) were crispier! During my last day in Boston, I decided to make a small detour. I decided to hop on the train and take a half hour train ride out to Salem, being that I never been and figured to see what I was missing all this time. Stepping off the train, it was just after noon, lunchtime. Not knowing the area, I found a gift shop and while at checkout, asked all the associates what they recommended for lunch. All of them said the same thing, Red's. With that, I took off (also Yelping and found out they close at 1), and got my butt over there. Being that I was a party of 1 (easy peasy), I was placed at the breakfast bar. The menu is very much offers breakfast and lunch food. I decided to get a Monte Cristo sandwich as it got me some French Toast with a little extra. This might be the best Monte Cristo I have ever had. Light, savory, and the choice of home fries over french fries made it all better. The portion size is incredibly generous. I could only imagine what would have been if I came here during breakfast. At that point I would have eaten the whole menu. The idea was to eat something that would tie me over for my entire visit to Salem, as I figured to get back in Boston by dinner and enjoy dinner there while not ruining my day in Salem. i visited here for the first time before the morning rush. i typically go to the location on rt 1, but i've always wanted to try the original, it's always packed! i ordered 2 blueberry pancakes and coffee. the coffee is your basic cup of joe, the pancakes are HUGE and fluffy! i asked if they served real maple syrup, they said no, they would have to increase their prices if they did. there are a number of restaurants that provide tiny jars of real maple syrup for a $1.50-3 upcharge per person, it would really improve the pancake or french toast quality if they had that option. my pancakes came a little overdone, i still ate the first one but the one on the bottom was a little too overdone for me. the server agreed and had no issue with replacing it with a fresh one which i took to go since the restaurant started filling up. service was fantastic, i forgot his name though. blueberry pancakes 8/10 (would be higher with real syrup) red's sandwich shop in salem is a staple for a reason, it's historical significance and well-known for their homey breakfasts is sure to stay. ambiance: 4/5 food: 4/5 drinks: 3.5/5 service: 5/5 red's sandwich shop: 4.1/5 read more

The In Like Flynn breakfast was good and large portions. It was hard to finish. The home fries were not my favorite but I am picky when it comes to home fries. Unfortunately, both sandwiches fell far short of expectations and were among the most disappointing versions I've had. The flavors and preparation just didn't come together as I'd hoped. The historic ambience is charming and definitely a plus, but the service was noticeably slow and inattentive during our visit. While I appreciate that Red's has been a Salem staple for many years, this experience left me unlikely to return or recommend it based on the food quality we received.
