I walked over here for dinner, I wasn't sure what to get. The lady behind the counter was very helpful and went over the menu with me and explained what various dishes were and told me some of her favorites. I ended up getting a bowl of lentil soup, and border of grape leaves, and an Iskander kebab platter. It was waaaaayy toooo muuuuuch food!!!!! It was also very very good! She gave me garlic sauce and hot sauce both of which were great but the food didn't even need it!! The Iskander platter was so good, thinly sliced meat on a bed of croutons with a tomato sauce and cool creamy yogurt sauce beside it. I came in craving shawarma but ended up with a chicken burrito instead. The chicken wasn't shawarma-style at all--maybe they were out, but I wasn't told that. I had even asked specifically and was told they had it, which made it disappointing when I opened my order. I also got 3 falafel balls for $5 and a small soda, but the soda wasn't twist-off, and no opener was provided upfront. I had to keep going back to the counter--for napkins, then for sauce (none was given with the falafel), and then again for the bottle opener. Felt like a mini obstacle course just to enjoy my meal. On our trip to Boston, we came across the Istanbul Diner Cafe and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of service, the cleanliness of the place, and the incredibly delicious and authentic food! The owner warmly greeted us and welcomed us in to his establishment with a huge smile. The menu is vast and authentic. While the prices are not the cheapest in town, it's worth every single penny and the portions were large enough that I was able to enjoy a hardy dinner and still have enough left over for a light snack/lunch the next day. I ordered and thoroughly enjoyed the chicken kabob plate. I also asked if by chance they had kunefe and to my astonishment and absolute joy, they did! It was THE BEST! I think my issue here was expectations. When I walked up and saw this little spot tucked next to a laundromat, I actually got excited -- those hidden gems are often the best! Inside, the restaurant is surprisingly nice: clean, comfortable, and well maintained. I ordered the Shepherd's Salad and the Kofte. The salad was fresh and crisp, though the pale hothouse tomatoes didn't have much flavor. I also wished there was sumac on the table to brighten things up -- it just tasted a little flat. The kofte was different than I expected: more like small chorizo-style sausages, nicely grilled but a bit dense and dry. The flavor was good, though, and I ended up mixing the sauce into my salad and dipping the kofte, which actually worked really well. The staff were very kind and efficient, and service was fast. While my first visit wasn't quite a home run, I'll definitely be back to try other dishes -- there's a lot of potential here! read more

The Istanbul Diner is an excellent Turkish Mediterranean restaurant. I was actually planning to go to Leaf and Ginger (a nice Mediterranean restaurant in Wakefield) on our way home from Revere beach. I just so happened to find this place on Google maps. I was with my aunt and uncle and walking into an authentic Turkish restaurant pushed their comfort zone. We all loved it. The food was amazing and the service was great. One of the owners (Salomon) came around and greeted everyone in the restaurant and brought complimentary rice pudding. Everyone in the group couldn't stop talking about how happy we were to have found the Istanbul Diner. We will definitely be going back and telling our friends and family. read more
