Improve everything. I'm a retired hospital and nursing home administrator. I'm at Sinai rehab and it is the worst healthcare facility I've ever been in. Staff with a few exceptions know absolutely nothing. Food is significantly below prison grade. The Board obviously takes no interest whatsoever. The place is an absolute disgrace when considering health facilities in the Jewish orbit. You people obviously take no interest or responsibility for what is done here. You all ought to quit immediately. My family's experience with Sinai Hospital destroyed any trust we had in this institution. What happened during the hospitalization was bad enough. What happened afterward was worse. Our family repeatedly raised concerns regarding a vulnerable patient's cognitive condition, decision-making ability, safety, and discharge planning. We requested additional evaluation. We requested a second opinion. We documented our concerns. We followed the hospital's procedures. After the fact, we obtained recordings and documentation that directly challenged several statements made by Sinai Hospital in its written grievance response. The hospital's response was not to review the evidence. The hospital's response was to declare the matter closed. That is what I find most disturbing. A grievance process is supposed to be a mechanism for accountability. Instead, what we experienced felt like a process designed to protect the hospital from accountability. Sinai's written response contains statements that our family believes are contradicted by recordings and documentation in our possession. We informed the hospital of that fact. We offered the evidence. We asked for clarification. We asked for review. The answer was no. Not because the evidence had been reviewed and rejected. Because they simply refused to review it. At this point, my concern is no longer limited to the medical decisions that were made. My concern is that Sinai Hospital appears unwilling to examine evidence that challenges its own conclusions. Families place enormous trust in hospitals. We trusted Sinai during one of the worst periods of our lives. If your loved one is vulnerable, cannot advocate for themselves, or if you believe something has gone wrong, understand that your experience may not end when the hospitalization ends. You may find yourself fighting for answers long after the fact, only to discover that the people responsible for investigating those concerns have no interest in revisiting their conclusions. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL EXPERIENCE. My daughter waited from 930pm to 4am to get in the back. No visit from the doctor AT ALL. The front office staff are so cold, unwelcoming, and uncaring. The ED lobby is a breeding ground. Not one time did any housekeeping staff wipe a chair or a wheelchair a door handle nothing. NOT ONE TIME. Run your cameras if you think I'm lying. Then when I did point it out here comes a lady who I've seem multiple times standing around talking but never cleaning. Here she comes sweeps up corn curls that were also on the floor for hours and leaves. Sinai you have a moral duty to have a clean waiting area and employees who truly understand the importance of sanitation. You have homeless individuals drug addicts and sick people coughing and hacking and touching all surfaces but no one cleaning. I saw the staff behind the glass sanitizing their station but nobody thinks the germy filthy lobby needs sanitizing. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. 7 hour wait time just to get in the back. I have tremendous confidence in Dr. Janet Conway and her team. I am not satisfied with the hospital. I have dietary issues. I am lactose intolerant. I am a celiac. I cannot consume gluten. I need 100 g of protein daily. It is very difficult to get that with just meals. I would need snacks. I can consume lactose, but I need to take a lactose enzyme. My gastroenterologist has told me not to worry about taking too much of that because it breaks down naturally. I spoke to everyone in this hospital. I spoke to patient experience. I spoke to the PAs under my physician. I spoke to the kitchen. About six days since it has been a problem. I finally spoke to a nutritionist. The diet and nutrition team says that the doctors orders were not being entered into the system. They entered six or seven orders that the system has not accepted. Finally, we thought we had it right. We did not. When I was making my orders we asked if the I asked if the items that I was ordering were diet compliant. I was told by the woman on the phone that they wouldn't be on the list of options if they were not compliant. I come to find out that many of the items I ordered were on the tray because they were not that compliant. I was talking with Patient Experience. They were annoyed that I went to legal. Well when you don't feed a patient in a diet compliant manner for six days and he's in trouble having his dietary needs met because you're not ADA compliant and that you don't have gluten-free snacks the patient might go illegal. It's it's called the American with Disabilities Act. I'm just a peon Paralegal. But I got a call from patient experience in a huff. . They said, "Why did you go to legal? "Why wouldn't I? Patient experience was not doing their jobs. Every time I asked for the lLactose enzyme or for the pharmacy to rush it, they barely send up enough tablets. When I spoke to my gastroenterologist, he said that it was an enzyme my body made naturally and it shouldn't be a problem to have too much. But these people are rationing it. The different units in this hospital do not communicate. I spoke to patient experience they said what do you want? I said I want that huge list of sandwiches that you have to offer us snacks I want all of them to have a gluten-free option. The person I was dealing with Patient Experience said that that was a lot to ask. I don't think it's too much to ask at all. I spoke to the dietitian today. She said she would get back to me. The head of the kitchen told me that she personally supervised preparation of all of them and all of them were on gluten-free bread. And she brought up three put in the refrigerator for me. These guys don't communicate. Steer clear of this hospital. If they can't take care of me, they can't take care of you. They are a disgrace. read more

They say visitation is 24 hours but it really is not. The level of nonchalance IN ICU that parades itself as staff and their bedside manner is infuriating. I see why signs are up everywhere about not assaulting staff. We waited while the "gatekeeper/security guard" took 7+ minutes to wipe down her desk and then log on to her computer before calling the nurses station for us to visit. We are now being told to wait for shift change over at 7AM !! Why?! We do not work here. We arrived at 6:20AM to speak with the night shift nurse;it is now 07:15AM and we are still in the ICU lobby waiting to go back and see our loved one. I ONLY received an update on how the night went by CALLING the hospital and speaking with the night nurse while sitting in the lobby. Infuriating. read more

Surgeons were fantastic! It's a shame the nurses take pride in trash talking patients. Left me screaming for someone to help Me after surgery. Nurse screamed at me for getting sick and throwing up. Ignored me when I needed help by putting headphones on. I have never been so horribly treated ever by medical people, it's like they teach them that patients aren't important enough to talk to. Rude and mean wicked witches work here as nurses! Do not leave your loved ones here overnight! You will regret bringing them here! University of Maryland is where I wish I would have gone. I had to leave Ama straight out of surgery. This nurse took great pride in not letting me fall asleep, no meds, anything to make me suffer. Took my son to Sinai in February. It is JUNE and his primary doctor nor his parents have any paper or documentation from the visit. I have properly ordered it online as his father, never got it. His primary care physician never got it. I called and was told to order it online, no help, just a lackluster attitude. My son has gone to GBMC since and gotten all paperwork to his primary IMMEDIATELY. The medication prescribed was for the wrong amount of time for the medication, so it was prescribed for 10 days instead of 28?!?!?! I also wasn't given ANY information as we left the hospital. I got a call a week later with minimal information. We went to a specialist 4 months later and had no paperwork from his first hospital visit. I am not sure where this is acceptable, but it isn't for me. But Lifebridge has reached out regularly to ensure they got paid for a visit they won't provide information from........ read more

I wasn't late! I was shocked and confused because I wasn't late. She said she would ask the Dr again but when she came back to her desk, she said the Dr was still at lunch so who was late me or the Dr? I refuse to reschedule and will seek medical help somewhere else This was a waste of my time, my gas and a day off work Totally unprofessional. My wife's final illness was unexpected, and Sinai did nothing to make it easier. She was admitted by ambulance at about 10:30 PM, and I later discovered an extra $150 charge for "after hours emergency service." As if people can schedule emergencies! Six hours in ICU produced a bill for $8,000, not including the doctor consultation fees that have yet to arrive. She was administered a cardiac ultrasound, after it was decided that her stroke was inoperable: completely unjustifiable. Through the entire experience, I spoke with an actual MD for a total of five minutes. Two months have elapsed, and lots of paperwork has come my way, but nobody has given me so much as a paragraph or two as a narrative description of what happened to her. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but I think that a life that lasted 84 1/2 years deserves a bit more respectful "closure" than just an itemized list of charges. She was sent upstairs to the Caring Bridge hospice floor, and I can't say enough good about the people and the care there. One nurse took a particular interest, and phoned me several times a day to update me on her condition, as her body wound down. This was such a contrast to the slab-of-meat treatment in the ER and the ICU. The hospital's current slogan is "Caring Bravely." I think that rings pretty hollow. read more

The case management/social work staff is the worst I've ever seen. They do not actively help you determine what the right path is for you or your loved one. Their motto is: dump ''em in rehab. And they don't seem to care if the rehab facility is good. They provided a list of facilities that included ones where there were documented cases of abuse. Why in God's name would you provide that as an option?!! They also try to rush you out of the hospital as fast as they can. One of the techniques for doing this is threatening your family with large medical bills. Another involves selecting a facility for you and telling you that they will put your family there even though they don't have the legal right to do that. A third technique is picking a ridiculous time for discharge even though they can give you flexibility. It's one thing to do this to younger people, but they do this with ELDERLY patients. Patients who are least able to advocate for themselves. Everything they do is to unsettle you so you do what works for them--not you. The patient advocate department will take complaints, but the leadership of the care/social work team ignores the concerns. The sad part is that any goodwill created by the doctors, nurses, cafeteria staff, etc., is undermined by the shambolic nature of the discharge process. Having a family member in the hospital is traumatic. Having a family member recover enough to leave the hospital should be a joyous occasion. Instead, it's traumatic on families and patients--especially those with mental health issues. Sinai tells you that they are committed to "compassionate" care regardless of the "financial circumstance" of patients. Don't believe them. Please, do NOT believe them. read more

My experience at the ED on 9/10/2024 was both very concerning as a registered nurse and a member of the community. While there, it became apparent that, through neglect, I would have to direct all aspects of my care and I must advocate for myself carefully. Having to use my knowledge of nursing interventions and standard level of care in my own interest was very concerning; as, I felt my safety and medical outlook were in jeopardy: requiring me to direct all of my care (past the intial registration and triage). Compounding these serious breaches, all of my requests to staff were met with a quite dismissive response and failed miserably to present a warm, caring customer service experience; which, is vital in a healthcare setting. In addition to the details above, most worrisome was the questionable knowledge of the Physician Assistant on duty on the night in question. I immediately realized that my confidence in the care I was to recieve from him had faded quickly. Having to educate your practioner did nothing to gain confidence that my care would be well developed. The lack of basic knowledge of frequently used medications was shocking. Unfortunately, when challenged, this individual became adversarial, condescending and argumentative, and remained thus for the remainder of time under his "care". I requested, numerous times to speak with both the unit manager and the nursing supervisor (which i contacted myself, leaving request with the promise of an imminent visit). Neither of them responded to my request after waiting hours for them to appear. My privacy was frequently ignored as my name was yelled into the waiting room on numerous occasions. I felt embarrased and vulnerable. I would also like to give kudos to the following team members for their commitment to providing excellent care. Both Brenda and Brittney from phlebotomy/EKG were able to calm my fears through support and thoughtful care. RN Rae was apologetic and worked hard to enrich my care. Her "service recovery" was top-notch. The registration tech, whose name I can not recall, was professional and kind. My family and I have always revered Sinai Hospital and we are disheartened by what occurred. read more

My mother had another emergency hospitalization from mid-August to early September, and it was for a seemingly-endless eighteen days.  Fortunately our favorite nurse at the (assisted-living) facility was there when the ambulance took my mother to the hospital - and knowing how we felt about Northwest Hospital (which, unsurprisingly, is a sentiment shared by many people), she begged the ambulance crew to take my mother to Sinai Hospital instead of to Northwest.  Thankfully they complied - but unfortunately it was quite a subpar experience. On the positive side: I spoke to a very nice nurse (Yosef) on 9/1. We spoke to a *very* nice and helpful intern on several occasions (Dr. Reese). The anesthesiologist - Dr. Agree - was *terrific*; incredibly friendly, helpful and patient. On the negative side: The nurse I spoke to twice on 8/27 was very UNhelpful. My mother was moved to a different room twice and no one let me know. The hospitalist - Dr. Kuhl - was terrible about calling us (as in, hardly ever). I called someone in the CEO's office on 8/24 and she never returned my call. *Worst of all* was the fact that the same horrendous cardiology group (from my previous review [of Northwest Hospital]) practices at Sinai Hospital.  Eventually it was obvious that my mother needed to have a pacemaker (surgically) implanted, but the cardiologist continually REFUSED to do the procedure.  Without the pacemaker, my mother would have continued having frequent instances of "blacking out" and it would have been *untenable*.  The cardiologist had the GALL to infer that since my mother is 95, we should choose to let her die instead of taking the (SMALL) chance that she could die during the procedure - and that was DESPITE the fact that we kept raising the issue of her worsening quality of life without a pacemaker, whereas it DIDN'T have to be that way.  After contending with that stubborn and mean-spirited cardiologist for literally a few days, FINALLY - one evening - he agreed to do the procedure.  Everything went *very* smoothly and it has truly given my mother "a new lease on life"; she's much more cheerful and alert.  As an aside; after the procedure was finished, the cardiologist said he hopes he looks as good as my mother does when he's her age (she does indeed look remarkable for 95). I should note that - unlike with my mother's hospitalization at Northwest Hospital - we didn't go to Baltimore this time; I'd hired a wonderful (daily/part-time) aide for my mother after she returned from Northwest to the assisted-living facility, and that aide is quite devoted to my mother.  She even stayed extra hours at the hospital on many days - and without her having been there, we would absolutely have needed to be there. I'm giving three stars (instead of two) because the overall nursing care was good. read more

A non caring and disrespectful hospital. Came in from another hospital to have cardiac Cath. Also have a broken ankle from balance difficulties with need for neck surgery with abnormal stress test. Just had back surgery. SW came in saying "you can't stay here" because I'm supposed to go to rehab again to get stronger for neck surgery followed by nurse telling the doctor and oncoming nurse right outside my door loud enough for myself and God only knows who else that I purposely pulled out my 2IV lines that were just placed. I spent all day asking for this to be done for tomorrow's procedure. Maybe it happened when I tried to throw a bunch of trash away while trying to balance myself with a broken ankle. It was an accident. I will NEVER nor encourage anyone to come to this hospital. I'm a nurse myself so I know what I'm talking about. read more

If I could leave a 0 or better yet a -10, I would. Warning. Under no circumstance should you send a loved one, or for that matter your dog, to Sinai Hospital's emergency room. My mother, a dementia patient, who lives in a Memory care unit with stage 4 dementia developed a UTI, a recurring problem for her. When this occurs, she becomes delusional, combative and uncontrollable. We, meaning myself and the care staff at her facility knew she had a UTI and she was treated with antibiotics for two weeks without improvement. Her behavior was getting worse. A new antibiotic was administered and still she continued to get worse. Eventually she got to her out of control point. I received a call saying she needed to be sent to an ER. I advised, my mistake, to send her to Sinai because her Uro-gynecologist was there. In order to get her there, three paramedics had to sedate her and strap her to a stretcher. She arrived at the Sina ER. I immediately called and spoke to a nurse at the nursing station in the ER and advised them of her history, her recent treatment and that I was her power of attorney and her advanced medical director. In addition, the nurse at her care facility sent over an inch thick document containing all of her related records. I asked the nurse to contact me once they had evaluated her so I would know what the care plan would be. This was around 9-10pm. I advised Id have my phone on all night to be reached. No one ever called. At 9am or so Friday morning I called the hospital to check on her status. Unbelievably, I was told she refused treatment, was discharged back to her memory care facility and had already left the hospital. She was sent out with a prescription for the same antibiotic that hadn't worked for her the previous two weeks. The ER doctor on staff had deemed her competent to make her own decisions, apparently because he never read the paperwork that was sent with her. If he had read it, he/she would have known the antibiotic wasnt going to work and that she belonged in a memory care unit... thats where she was being discharged to. So my phone call and the documents sent with her were completely ignored. The ER doctor was both incompetent and negligent. My next call was to the care facility, where my mother was just arriving back in her still delusional and dangerous state. The care facility could not believe the situation any more than myself. They especially couldn't believe she was sent back with a prescription for a drug already known not to work. we now had to figure out where to send my Mom once again. A decision was made to send her to Northwest Hospital. The Doctor and Nurse at Northwest have taken the appropriate actions, are treating her with Iv antibiotics and have admitted her as should have been done at Sinai. It is incomprehensible to me the level of incompetence at Sinai and their lack of care. read more

The pediatric ER the nurses, were horrible. They weren't monitoring my child his blood pressure was critically low, and I had to bring it to their attention, and although they were sitting at the desk in front of the monitor, having personal conversations. Then, and only then, did they run in and call the doctor to assist my child. I will never bring my child back to this hospital. You shouldn't either. Lets just say their doctors could have a better bedside manner for folk who have no insurance, I've been on both sides currently fortunate to have great coverage, but when I didn't my level of C.S. was very questionable. Let me start by stating that Sinai Hospital has some exceptional nurses such as Erica, Telia and Goldie. I know that there are more but, these nurses took amazing care of my mother while she was a patient on the second floor around March 4th through Easter Sunday. The nursing assistants were also very caring and gentle. Our family is extremely thankful . My mother means the world to me. Unfortunately, this was a needless frustrating and stressful hospitalization for my mom and our family... So-, I had to settle my spirit prior to writing this review due to the fact that I was less than impressed with the physicians and two nursing supervisors that supervised the PCU... The welfare of my senior mom was not considered prior to implementing a treatment plan nor closely monitored by the physician or nursing supervisor assigned to her care. Her condition deteriorated needlessly while in the hospital to the point that her blood glucose level dropped to a dangerously low level on at least two occassions due to lack of sufficient nutrition. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED AND COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. I questioned the "treatment" of her condition and the nursing supervisor (I'll call him Mr. "N") indicated that the treatment was "doctors orders". (Pause ) Now... there comes a time that a person knowledgeable and confident in his level of training/skills would speak up on behalf of a patient when necessary... if patient care was truly the goal. This particular nursing supervisor made a sarcastic statement to me when he walked into the room to speak to my mother. Normally, I would have directly asked him to clarify his statement but, that was not the appropriate time. My mother did not need any additional stress. Needless to say...he never entered her room again while I was visiting. As for the physicians...if a treatment is not working and a patient is showing signs of deterioration, the method of treatment should be changed or adjusted... Without elaborating on the details, due to the HIPAA law, I will end my message regarding this issue on THIS public platform... My purpose in writing this review is to make it crystal clear to the families of all patients to remain diligent in monitoring your loved one that has been admitted to ANY hospital... not just Sinai. Question anything that is not proper and take whatever action is deemed necessary and APPROPRIATE to thoroughly address the issue. I thank Our Creator and loving ancestors for assigning other caring, dedicated and knowledgeable persons to care for my mother during her visit. They truly represented their profession and the hospital well. They did not go unnoticed. If I could give their ER 0 stars I would give them NEGATIVE. As a patient who came in from a car accident with back, neck and head pain, I sat in the waiting room for over 6 hours before I got moved to the back hallway in front of an empty room where I am currently sitting and waiting. I asked for pain management several times as I've been sitting in excruciating pain for hours and no one has done anything about it. I guess because I'm not dripping blood my "emergency" isn't considered "emergent". Not only did the nurse leader make me walk back to the ER area, when it was clear that I was having trouble doing so, but she just dropped me off in the middle of the hallway and stated "a provider would be with you". I Literally watched the empty room be cleaned right after i was called back and staff just kept walking past me as i sat crying in excruciating pain. After many hours of suffering and pain and already asking if I could have some type of pain management, I asked another nurse who stated she would ask "my designated nurse" who's response was "she's just going to have to wait". I've never experienced such horrible service in a hospital EVER. Once my "wait" was "over" she literally came in front of me didn't ask me any questions, dropped some Tylenol and water on my bed and walked away. I walked out after that. No general concern, no apology for the long wait, no conversation about why i was there and how i was feeling, NOTHING! I can't believe they actually call themselves a hospital and CMS not JACHO has cited them yet. You couldn't pay me to ever go back to this hospital if it was the last place on earth. And for a Lifebridge Healthcare Institution I'm extremely disappointed. This in no way displays quality of care or says that you care about the well being of your patients. Racist to the fullest. If you're African American in Baltimore you already knew how racist the admin & policies at Sinai & JH admin were during 1980s-1990s . Sadly in 2021 its still practiced & more visible. My family was visiting the hospital in May 2021 to visit a cousin who only had hours to live. They were told (it was enforced) only 1 relative can visit at a time. A Jewish patient was under the SAME condition as my cousin but the patient's family could visit in MULTIPLE settings. My family's complaints were ignored. Once AGAIN Sinai has shown favorable treatment to other races over African Americans/Blacks. read more

I do not know how anyone can give this hospital a bad review? My family and I have had numerous visits to this facility since November 2018. We did have a long wait once, for ER visit, but we came prepared for that, and every staff member we encountered treated us royally. And I must say everyone else they encountered also. I was there on a very busy day, and I viewed this myself. No matter how many times the doctors and other medical professionals were interrupted, they answered each person with respect! Something you just do not see any more, anywhere. Bottom line without giving out private details, they saved my family members life, literally. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I have been a patient at one of their off site locations for many years Cardiology QL . It has gotten worse poor management. she is always sitting at her desk chatting with some of the office staff consistently instead of helping out the staff whom appears to overly worked. While patients sit and wait because there is not enough staff. I have considered changing doctors. shame on this hospital! What happened to good management? read more

People's experiences are so different. I think it all comes down to how you are treated by staff. I had some really nice and some really vile. Nurses techs housekeeping chaplain meal delivery - some are nasty (please don't work in a medical facility) and some go out of the way to make you feel better in an environment where you already are on shaky terms read more

I am curious to know what the policies are in the ER when you have a critical health condition. My daughter and I were in the ER for six (6) hours last night and this morning and were never seen other than by the triage nurse. My daughter has kidney failure and is on dialysis. We took her to the ER because she is currently jaundice, vomiting and nauseous. We sat there for six hours before we decided to leave at 4:00 a.m. We wanted to get her to dialysis by 6:30 a.m. because sometimes when she goes into the hospital it takes a few days before she can even get dialysis. We said we would go back to the ER after her dialysis. However, because she was sick the dialysis center sent her back to the ER by way of ambulance. She is now sitting back in that same waiting room we were in a few hours ago. Can someone tell me the procedures of Sinai ER when it comes to severely ill individuals, like my daughter. This is ridiculous. I went to the front desk to ask what number in line was my daughter after 3 hours there. The person at the desk very smartly stated that people are not being called based on when they came in. "It's based on if there are beds available in the back." What? What does that even mean? It was so rude and stupid I could not respond. I just looked at her for a minute. In my head, I'm saying, why did she even come to work if she is not going to be of any assistance. In the 5th hour someone came and took her blood pressure. As you know there is nothing anyone can do about it because everybody got a damn excuse. Covid cases on the rise and so on and so what. This is my only daughter and her health is very important to me even if it is not to Sinai. I am so disgusted I don't know what to do. read more

After my daughter broke her elbow and did not fully recover (she was initially treated at Hopkins and then at UMD), we found Dr. Standard and Anil Bhave at Sinai. They take great care of her and are great with communication. My pre-teen daughter considers her medical team to be her friends because she knows they really care about her. She's also finally making progress (after a year with no progress at the other hospitals) and she is back to being able to do the things she loves! read more

The doctors, awesome and of the nurses, like Elka, Clavela, Prella and Foxy ( my nickname for her) were exceptional. But for the most part the stay was just ok. stayed in the hospital because of a elevated fever, suppose to have CAT scan done , no one every showed up until the 4th day, still don know where the fever was coming from. Was told I was going home then this happen for 4days, well am still here. I had a support system set up at home, my daughter in love too off 2 weeks, i spent the first week in the hospital And part of the second. As of this writing I have been here 11 days, with no ended in sight. Transportation was never on time I had to call to find out what was going on. Of course they will get back to you. i will keep you updated on this saga, the food wasn't the greatest but the service from the lady on 3 floor south was read more
