It's difficult to find a boutique wine shop with a large selection at reasonable prices. If a quality selection with minimal snootiness is part of the requirements, then you've just limited your search to a handful of locations. Sip is a short walk away from Atlantic Terminal. You can't miss it because there's typically a witty sign prompting you inside- guess what? There's always a reason for wine. A few things set Sip apart from the rest- their selection of wines comprises a variety of varietals that can keep you experimenting with more hits consistently, and you can find great bottles for as low as $12. I've been skeptical about these frugal choices, but definitely willing to try. And it's taught me that delicious wines come at all prices. Another part of the Sip experience important to me is the employee knowledge. It seems no matter what bottle you bring to the counter, someone there has a few tasting notes for you to take into account when you finally get home to enjoy. I love their no-pretense vibe to helping you pick a wine. Service is usually with a smile, similar to mine after a few Sips of my own. read more

I initially was going into this store in hopes of finding a nice fine wine. Upon entering, I was not greeted or even acknowledged. Mind you I was the only person in the store (a woman of color) with my mother. I saw a few wines of my liking and wanted to purchase but felt very uncomfortable when I noticed a woman who I assume was one of the owners just standing there with one hand on her hip staring at me and my mom. No hello, no do you need help...NOTHING. Once realizing that I decided to not make my purchase. If you are a person of color, do not support this business. I'm psyched to write the first review of Sip! A friend recommended this place when I was in town and wanted to bring some wine to a dinner party. At first, I was a little worried that it was too hipster/yuppie-ish (exposed brick? check.), but then they were so helpful and had a great selection of wine, I couldn't help but love it. Sip is freakin' fantastic. I love the neon hanging sign they have outside, and the simplistic bottle display in their front window. The staff is attentive and friendly, without being overbearing. The space is small and cozy, with half-fridges for a small chilled selection underneath a modest tasting station, complete with bottled water. But the most amazing part is their selection. Other wine stores in the neighborhood have 2-3 times the amount of wine (notwithstanding spirits, too... Sip is strictly wine), and none of the interest. Sip is a guilty pleasure of mine. Not that I would ever feel guilty for going there, but more that I might feel guilty for dropping so much coin there. I live far enough away for it to be relatively innocuous, but whenever I get the urge for a nice bottle that I know I'm not going to find at one of the other run-of-the-mill or by-the-numbers wine shops closer to me, I take a stroll up 5th to Sip. It's nice and small, so the selection is navigable and accessible. I like that they have a well-rounded offering of wines from around the world, from relatively commercial and available to the most obscure Rioja or 1er Cru Burgundy you've ever seen (or have never seen, for that matter!). They don't exactly have a bargain basement, but that's not the niche or demographic they're going for. All the wines are thoughtfully sourced and well chosen, and the staff that I've dealt with can speak directly to nearly all of them. In the rare instances when they haven't been able to, they've been honest about it and tried to help me make deductions based on the region, producer and vintage. I don't like to be bullshitted when I'm plunking down my ducats for anything, so I appreciate the straight shooting attitude of the staff. They have also made some spectacular suggestions for me, not the least of which is a German Riesling which I am absolutely obsessed with. Overall, this is a boutique wine shop with some lesser known varietals and small producers. If you walk in and feel overwhelmed, don't be afraid to admit it and ask them for help. If you try to describe what you like and don't like, as well as what you think you're looking for, I'll bet they can help or at least give you some good suggestions. Exploring wine can be an adventure and the guys at Sip are all about that. read more

Great selection of organic wines across all price ranges. As others have said though, the staff are standoffish towards the customers (both me and my husband who went in separately on different occasions) No smiles or hellos. We are new to the area and so wondered if regulars get more of a welcome? I guess we'll see over time but if not, we'll find somewhere else to buy our wine. read more

I stopped into sip looking for something to bring to a dinner party and left with an excellent bottle that complimented the meal perfectly (wish I could remember the name). The staff is extremely knowledgeable and after explaining what we were going to be eating they suggested a couple options to chose from. While I wasn't familiar with many of the choices they offered, once I asked they were willing to talk me through their selections and I ended up with a delicious bottle. There's a wine store on every corner in Brooklyn these days. But in my opinion, few bring to the table what Sip Fine Wine does. Sip truly is a diamond in the ruff! What I love about the shop is that Nick (the owner) and his select team of employees really make it a point to learn your personal tastes and make recommendations that 9 times out of 10 are spot on! They really have a sense for what you enjoy drinking after shopping there a couple times and are really helpful in finding a bottle that you'll enjoy. The other thing I love about the shop is that Nick prides himself on stocking bottles from the lesser known, independent vineyards around the world (and for every price point at that!). So, when you walk in you're bound to find a funky bottle from the Languedoc that you may only be able to get there. His curated stock is a breath of fresh air in my opinion. Best liquor store in the whole area. It's small but elegant. It doesn't feel dirty and sinful like most liquor stores. They sell an excellent black bottle Brand of Prosecco that is our favorite. The workers and owners here are also very knowledge in their products and make very good recommendations, after listening to their clients needs. We come here to get wine and Prosecco a lot and they are even nice enough to open up for us right as they were closing one time, so to accommodate their customers. read more

First encounter with Sip staff was not a greeting but a grunt as he poured himself a tasting portion. I attempted to ask about a particular bottle and it became very clear that he had no idea what he was talking about. He did say that the Pax Grenache was "one of only 2 or 3 left in the world" and that the winemaker relied on winemaking techniques that no one else is using "it's like medieval". Finally he told me that it doesn't matter if the winery's grapes are estate grown or sourced. Staff attitude and knowledge is a joke. read more

This is a great place to get to know and understand wine. Nick, the owner (or any of the other employees), will most likely remember your last bottle purchased and they'll do their best to steer you to something else you might like next time you visit. Regarding the display of the wines in an upright fashion, I decided to ask the about this! Their response: yes, of course you don't want store wines upright, but the stuff on their shelves that is standing is stuff that moves quickly and you'll notice that the more expensive bottles that might not move as quickly have bottles STORED correctly behind them. He wisely rotates the standing ones back to the vertical storage every so often. I've since discovered that Nick was a sommelier and also managed a restaurant bar (Le Madeline in Manhattan) in his illustrious past and understands wine storage! All in all, I consider myself lucky to have such a great wine shop in my neighborhood! read more

These are usually much interesting than the wines from large vineyards that you see at most liquor stores. Last time I was in they suggested a bio-dynamic french burgundy. Aside form heading into the city to some cavernous wine shop of 10,000 square feet, you're just not going to find a collection of this many expertly picked wines. As an aside, I build wine cellars for a living, and storing wine standing up is never a problem if the bottle is only gong to sit there for a relatively short period of time. And from what I can tell by the ever changing and exciting inventory, it does just that...take it from a pro and let the uninitiated conjecture all they want. read more

I'm not a wine connoisseur, but I typically buy one for every dinner party I go to, and for a long time this was my go-to place. Part of it was convenience - I lived close by - but I went back because they were great with recommendations. They usually ask for your price range first, but obviously it helps if you have some vague idea of what you want (like the type of wine you want). If I know what's being served, I'll mention that. So far they've batted a perfect 1.000 - I never mention what I bring at the parties (mainly because I barely know anything about it), but usually someone will say something complimentary without being prompted. read more

Great little wine shop, directly across the street from Total Wine Bar on 5th Ave. in Park Slope. The guys who work there are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. They know their wines, so a simple description of what you're looking for and in what price range will lead you to a wonderful bottle of vino. They do tastings on Saturday afternoons too, so you can go and try something new. The store itself is small and well-designed, with a very comfy vibe, so you won't feel intimidated or overwhelmed by thousands of wine labels or varieties. My husband and I went with Sip Fine Wine for our wedding and they were great. I was arranging everything long distance, so the website and staff were amazing. Answered emails promptly, delivered our order to the reception and had a great selection of reasonably priced bottles. I recommend working with them. One might think that this is standard practice but most wine shops just ask their sales person what sells best. I take it all back! Well, most of it. After trying out other wine stores in the neighborhood, Sip stands out as having the best selection by far. The quality is awesome- you can easily get a delicious bottle for between $10-$15. I've been back many times now and always manage to find something new, interesting, and enjoyable. While the staff is usually pretty hands off, they've shown that they know their stuff when I ask for help. While other nearby wine stores may seem larger- most of them don't have anywhere near the variety and certainly not the quality of Sip. read more

Arrogant staff (yes you grey haired man with a pony tail AND a quiff) - we spent $80 in there and grey haired man didn't even offer us a drink of the wine he was sampling as he pushed past us with a cursory 'Excuse Me' to offer a glass to the man who came in behind us: so self important.
