I absolutely love this place. Their fish is delicious, crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside. The chips are pretty standard, but tasty nonetheless. I was in a few weeks ago with my partner and I had the Cod and Chips and she had the Salmon and chips. Everything was served hot and the taste was spot on. Our server was quite young, mid teens, but she did her best. I would've liked her to be a bit more attentive, we had to flag her down for drink refills. Other than that the service was good. If you want great fish and chips at a reasonable price, give this place a try. read more

We out for a meal of fish & chips at least once a month at various restaurants. Unfortunately, we had been somewhat disappointed with this establishment when we attended this about a month ago. The service, pricing and taste of the fish were good. The issue is that the chips were "frozen" and not "fresh cut". This was very disappointing from a restaurant that advertises as an "authentic" English fish & chip shop! Therefore, the owners should review this and consider changing the chips as there are many other restaurants that offer "fresh cut". read more

Very disappointing customer service. We ordered online almost one hour before pickup time. Three simple fish and chips combos ( 2 pieces of fish and 1 with three pieces of fish). They all came with two pieces. when I called the option was to go and get the fish missing (20 minutes away) or a credit for the missing piece for future purchases. There was no an option of refund the money that I paid for something that I didn't get. This was ordered at 2:30 pm and pickup at 3:30 and I was told they were too busy........there was one couple inside the restaurant and I don't know many restaurants that are busy between lunch and dinner. read more

The man that worked here was so inviting,we will miss seeing him greet us. He'd see us walking in and already place our order as it was the same every time. This is the place to go if you want friendly service and great food the fish is always fresh and cooked to perfection. Love this place came here once with my girlfriend and we're hooked. Probably some of freshest fish in the city. Don't forget to try the mac n cheese wedges tried those they serve them with a ranch dip and it's probably the best thing any cheese Craver could eat. My husband and I were out and about and decided we needed food. We are huge fans of fish and chips and decided to try out Sir Winston's. We were greeted and seated immediately, and was chatted up by the manager and his daughter. We appeared to be "new faces" (which we were) and were treated like royalty. We ordered a two piece of haddock and fries (to share) and it was pretty tasty! What caught our eye though, was the fact they had meat pies, not to mention, a butter chicken pie! The manager's daughter gave us a deal, if we bought 4 meat pies, she would throw in a veggie samosa pie. Done and done! We made the pies at home (but you can order them in store and eat them there!) and they were amazing. They are locally made, no preservatives, and the pastry is awesome. I highly recommend trying the butter chicken pie, as it is now a huge favorite of ours. We even went back a few days later to buy some more pies! Fairly disappointing. I was looking forward to some fish & chips. My wife dislikes any kind of sea-food, so I don't get to hit up many restaurants that specialize in the cuisine. And hey, my wife wasn't with me this evening, so let's get me some fish & chips. The menu seemed promising. The appetizer menu was impressively large, but I knew I wouldn't be able to eat that much food so I didn't order anything from there. As for the main course... you can choose different types of fish which is a great idea. The fish itself wasn't bad, nothing I would rave about either. You could defiantly tell it had come from a freezer... but not soggy and gross. I was not a fan of the batter though. The batter wasn't thick - actually rather thin coating - and it seemed to be inconsistently coated. And the batter was almost too crunchy, maybe it was the thinner coated spots that were the problem. There were only 6 people in the restaurant, yet my fries were cool and hard. If you can't be bothered to have the time to make fresh chips at a slow time, you may have to rethink if you want to be in the restaurant business. In the end I think I've had better fish & chips at corporate restaurants, so I probably wouldn't go back. But maybe I just hit them on a bad day. read more

Ew. That about sums up the food at this place. Looked great, loved the British theme inside, but the fish was over battered and thick, leading to uncooked batter on the inside. The chips tasted like nothing and were all one texture, rather than the crunchy outside/soft inside they should be. The malt vinegar literally tasted like nothing, smelled like nothing and I smelled the white vinegar and it was exactly the same. I was going to try this place and never got around to it but the other day heard their radio ad for fish and chips and steak and kidney pie. Feeling a bit peckish for steak and kidney i headed over to peruse their wares. I ordered 1 piece cod and chips meal and a steak and kidney pie and coffee . They have a couple of types of pies,steak and kidney and beef and cheese . They aren't on the menu so you have to ask. They have merged with a guy who is known as the 'pie man' it seems . The pies are about the size of a standard grocery store swansons meat pie with the foil plate included. The steak and kidney pie was very tasty but could have used more filling . It wouldn't be a meal in itself. The fish and chips were good with the fish being very flaky and tender with a thin slightly crunchy crust. The fries were thick cut with very soft middle and lightly browned. Comes with a small fish shaped ceramic cup full of decent tartar sauce. Funny though that the tartar sauces of all the fish places i've been to in edmonton don't seem to have dill pickle relish in them which when i make it at home is a prerequisite. They have good coffee . Service was good with very friendly waiter who may have been the owner. Prices are about the same as the other non-chain fish and chip shops in town . read more

Just had lunch with my sisters here today. We all had the halibut and fries plus coleslaw. The 1 piece order was plenty...both fish and fries were hot and delicious. This place is a hidden gem!!! Prices are great. Service is fast and friendly. The place itself is pretty big but its cosy. Deplorable service. I waited at the door for a minute and two staff members walked by me and didn't acknowledge me. So I sat down at a table, waited a couple minutes and still no one acknowledged me. We have been going to sir Winston's since they first opened. The fish and chips used to be stellar. Crisp and fresh made. We have seen the restaurant change hands and the food quality maintained great until now. We went ordered 2 two piece fish and chips with coleslaw. And 2 fries and chicken fingers for the kids plus drinks. Fish and chips. The fish was good batter was fresh and crisp like I remembered it, fries were another story, clearly made ahead of time and sitting in a heating tray of some sort. Really brown, old oil used? Then a tiny portion of tartar sauce and coleslaw was bland. They made more of an attempt at presentation than previous owners but doesn't mean much when the food is kind of sad. Kids meals were about the same disappointing fries and chicken fingers were over cooked my kids could barely eat them they were so tough. The kicker for me was opening the ketchup top and clearly the contents were pressurized from sitting or something. It sprayed out a good third of the bottle on myself, on my kids face on my meal and on the floor. While they rushed over to clean it off the floor they didn't apologize or offer anything more than a few more napkins. Just over all a very disappointing visit to a restaurant that I hold dear and go to celebrate my moms birthday. Will likely give it one more shot then give it a pass in the future. read more

I'd been meaning to visit Sir Winston's for a while, and today I had the opportunity to go with two co-workers. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the owner who made friendly conversation with us as we were being seated. Within minutes of being seated, he took our drink orders and then gave us time to go over the menu. I was tempted to order a beer from the wide variety available, but since I went for lunch and had to go back to work afterwards, I had to pass on it. My co-workers and I took a few minutes to look at the menu, and when the owner came back with our drinks we were ready to order. Right away we all knew we wanted to try the vegetarian samosas and calamari for our appetizers. I ordered the two piece halibut meal, while my co-workers ordered the two and three piece haddock meals. While we sat there waiting for our orders, the owner came back with three bowls of coleslaw. The coleslaw was fresh since it was still crunchy (not soggy), and there appeared to be dill in it which added to the flavour. As my co-workers and I chatted and ate the delicious coleslaw, our appetizers were brought to us. I was pretty impressed by the speedy service, since we were just finishing our bowls. Right away we all dug into the plate of calamari, and were pleasantly surprised by the taste. A lot of restaurants that serve calamari, don't have good calamari. It either has a strong fishy taste or is really chewy like gum. This was the complete opposite. The calamari was easy to chew, and tasted great. Kinda wish I didn't have to share with two other people... haha. Next we tried the vegetarian samosas. The samosas had good flavour, and I was actually happy the samosa shell wasn't thick. Many Indian restaurants I've gone to screw them up by using a thicker samosa shell and barely putting any filling in them. These ones were perfect. Since the owner is Indian, you know he's going to get the samosas right. Almost as soon as we finished our appetizers, all of our meals were brought out to us. I can't comment on my co-workers' meals, but I was impressed by the large pieces of haddock on their plates. They seemed to enjoy their choices, but since there was so much food, they couldn't finish. They both got through one piece of fish each and the fries, before their stomachs got full and they had to box the rest up. My halibut meal was equally as large. The pieces of fish were covered in a light and very scrumptious batter, and the fish pieces used were thick. Some local restaurants I've had fish and chips at tend to use a very thick and heavy batter, and skimp on the fillet used. It's almost like they emphasize on the batter instead of the fish, and you usually go home feeling sick after you finish. That wasn't the case at Sir Winston's. It was a large piece of fish covered in a light and crunchy batter. I basically started, and didn't come up for air until I finished everything on my plate. I'm sure I could've eaten more if there was actually more on my plate, but thank god there wasn't because I still had to go back to work... haha. I do feel kinda bad my co-workers and I almost went through nearly two bottles of tartar sauce... lol. If anything, the owner should see that as an indication of how delicious his food is. After our meal, it came time to pay our bill. The last time I went to Brit's Fish & Chips and had the two piece halibut meal, I ended up paying around $30 plus tax and tip. At Sir Winston's, my meal cost less than half of that. With tax and tip I paid under $15. Even my co-workers' meals cost significantly less than the price of the haddock meals at Brit's. In total, I think our bill came out to around $70-75 (two appies, and three entrees) What more can you ask for? You're paying less money than at Brit's and getting the same amount of food, and the food also tastes better. Sir Winston's definitely has great value paired with mouth watering fish and chips. I don't think I'll ever be going back to Brit's or having fish and chips at any other restaurants from now on. I'll only be going to Sir Winston's when I have a craving for fish and chips. It's a very clean establishment, with a friendly host, the service is top notch, and the food is amazing. We even had the owner's son serve us, and you could tell the apple didn't fall far from the tree in that family. He was equally hospitable as the owner. To some of the other reviewers that had negative feedback, I didn't see slow service and the food came out hot. My co-workers and I got there around 12PM. We ordered, ate, paid, and left by about 12:45PM to go back to work. In my opinion, that's a reasonable amount of time considering this isn't a fast food establishment. We were on our way home from airport on Thurs and starving. Throwing different ideas around and my husband remembered seeing Sir Winston's. We showed up at 8:10, they close at 8 but were more than welcoming. The environment is awesome so bright and Cheery. The décor made you feel like you were in an English Pub. My husband and I had the Halibut meal and mom had the Cod. The fish was so good, light and crispy batter flaky fish...amazing. Coleslaw is very good better than anywhere we have had. Jay the owner was most entertaining and full of information. We noticed the meat pies available for take home. Jay told us all about how they make them and we had to try one of each. What a nice lunch! This restaurant has come along way with the changes Jay has made with the renos, décor and atmosphere. As the new owner he wisely kept many of the great recipes for the fish and the French fries are the perfect combo of crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, obviously a real potato. The batter on our Halibut was light with no oily taste, at the end of our meal we didn't have that sick heavy greasy feeling. Jay was kind and so eager to share his ideas, very passionate to offer the best food and service. He has all types of events to make the restaurant stand out and be somewhere fun to be a regular. I will take my friends back there because I know Jay will treat everyone like his family and are his guest instead of a customer.
