Not well known fish and chips spot might just be the best in Edmonton. But don't let that scare you away, the service is phenomenal and fast as well. Restaurant had little paintings and trinkets that give you that English pub vibe with really helped round out the experience. Portions are huge as well. Between two of us we split a 3 pc of cod and fries. And I got an extra mushy peas on the side to try it out. Fish was amazing, breading was light and flakey. Fries were nice and crispy. You can tell everything was cooked to order and it came out really fast. I recommend the mushy peas as well. Awesome flavour and consistency. This is a very low key spot. The highlights- fries tasted hand cut and of course they offer malt vinegar, they offer a selection of really fresh fish that is fried to order and served piping hot. The orders are big - we split a 3 piece cod and I still had to take an entire piece home. We tried the mushy peas as an extra side - my friend enjoyed them but I found the peas and the meal a bit bland. Other than adding a pinch of salt, the food was fresh and good. You can order Fish by itself, Fish 'n Chips, Full Meal Deals which include Fish 'n Chips and a side of your choice and beverage and the list goes on from there. Price depends on which level (there are 6 varieties/prices) of fish you are purchasing... Ranging from Basa, Cod, Hadock, ???, ???, Halibut (Sorry can't remember # 4 & # 5). We started our meal with a hearty Bowl of fish chowder soup - $4.95 Creamy - almost buttery - with large chunks of white fish, carrots, peas, & corn. I didn't see any clam items on their menu. The bowl was hearty enough to share with my hubby as an appetizer and came with choice of roll or two slices of bread with butter. For entrees my toddler had a 1 piece of cod fish 'n chips for $6.95 that came with a juice box. My husband had a 1 piece of Haddock fish 'n chip and I had a 1 piece of Halibut fish 'n chips. My husband preferred the Haddock of all three - very buttery flavor and soft. I enjoyed the firmness of the Halibut. We each had a bit of our toddler's Cod as she wasn't too into... Pretty bland and flavorless. Definitely worth the few dollars in price upcharge to get Haddock or better. We had WAY too many french fries between the 3 of us... Unless you love french fries I think it would suffice for a couple to share a 2 or 3 piece fish 'n chips and an appetizer or bowl of fish chowder. The table had both malt and white vinegar (which I appreciate) as well as tartar sauce and seafood sauce they brought out to us, salt & pepper, the usual. The food was quick and cooked to order - everything tasted really fresh and the fries were obviously fresh cut and homemade - not frozen! They don't come salted - so add your own to taste! Overall, we'd give their food 3 stars - but the atmosphere and service brought it up to 4 stars overall. The server we had today was quirky - a guy in his mid 20's with a sweater vest and a bowtie - he was very informative and gave suggestions for the menu depending on our likes and dislikes. He even brought out a coloring book and crayons for our toddler. As we were leaving we had accidentally left her sippy cup on the table and he came running out to the parking lot with it - great chap! 1 Kids entree, 2 adult 1 piece of fish 'n chips, and 1 bowl of soup came to $40 with tip... Still a little steep in price but I did order Halibut for one of the adult meals which is the most expensive fish on their menu. This place gets top marks for atmosphere! The front door resembles the classic British phone booth and if you look just inside the door, there's a photo of one. The ornaments on the walls remind me of things my grandma used to have - a bed warmer by the fireplace, the same brass plates. The inside is a cross between a traditional British pub and a fish & chips shop. I've eaten at this location twice. This time I stayed in, last time was take-away. I thought that important to note because if you do take it out, they wrap the fish in the traditional style using newspaper - which is really cool and reminiscent of my trip to the UK many years ago. Whether your order is to stay or go (best to indicate that first), you approach the bar to place your order. They give you an order number and call when your order is ready. The menu has some interesting items. Aside from being able to select the type of fish - cod, halibut, etc. - they have items such as haggis. They offer a selection of imported British ales on tap and in bottles and even imported bottled sodas. I would venture to say that most of the food on the menu is deep fried - including dessert! They offer deep fried Mars bars or pineapple rings with toffee sauce for $2.85! Instead of chips, I tried the deep fried mushrooms. Some advice - be sure to cut the mushrooms before eating. I had one piece of Halibut with Chips and Coleslaw, nothing to drink: total for bill $16.65. Definitely on the expensive side. The halibut was nicely deep fried, the coating is very tempura-like. Coleslaw good and chips good. Negatives: cost is expensive, place needs a really good cleaning - just about everything in the place is covered in grease and things like the salt and pepper shakers very sticky from not being cleaned. Service not vey good. As well, I just abhor a restaurant with carpet which is a great repository of filth and can never be cleaned. I am actually surprised that Alberta Health as in Environmental Health allows a place such as a fish and chip joint to have carpets. read more

Went to this restaurant with my kids because I had heard good things. Ordered a variety of items. Everything was disappointing. From what I can tell their deep fryer had old oil in it (based on the taste) everything was outrageously greasy. Everything basically tastes the same. Except the French fries... French fries were better. I give them a 2/5 . The service was horrendous. They didn't bring us plates or napkins. When the food came I had to try and find someone to get ketchup for my kids.... no one was any where so I went behind the counter and grabbed it from the fridge. Then I realized we didn't have sauce for the fish..... so I went looking again and stole the bottle off a table that had been sitting there still covered in old dishes and condiments from before we entered. It was a Friday night around 6:30pm. There were 2 other seated tables in the restaurant so it was about half full.... no one asked if the food was good until we were about to leave. For the record.... my children and I disliked it so much we did our best to eat some of the $60 worth of fish and chips (cannot believe the price vs quality) and ended up buying food else where. This place is a little expensive for what they offer. You order your food and then you pick it up yourself. It appears to be a restaurant, but it's more like a fast food place. But they still have restaurant prices. The fish and chips are good (I would hope so since they named the store Brits Fish and Chips) but they were a little greasy for my taste. The cool thing is that you can choose what kind of fish you want for your fish and chips. I've had the the halibut and the haddock and the haddock was much better. I don't think the halibut is done justice when it's served this way. But that might be just me. It's a cool place but it's not the best in town. They get a star for having real chips alone. Not skinny fries! Chunky potato goodness that would be made only better with HP sauce. I've been to Brits a few times and it always satisfies that craving for greasy, stodgy foods that remind me of Scotland. they also sell Tennants Lager which is a staple beverage to have with a chippy for any Scot. From the outside it looks so fun! The giant BRITS sign and entrance through the red phone box makes it very identifiable when passing by and reminds me how much I love fish and chips every time I see it. Inside it's not quite as fun but they do have some British style memorabilia on the walls but the side of the room where you order has a nice window seat and is a cosy corner to enjoy your 'fish supper'. We normally go to the main dining space, lots of tables but I've never been when the place was that busy. Always just a few tables occupied which means the wait is never too long! The menu is pretty big, lots of fish options to choose from and I noticed they put a new menu board at the front with a few brand new items. I had the chowder and it was just ok. I would only come back here if it was the last place with food during an apocalypse. The food here used to be amazing. The fish had a beautiful light and fluffy batter that was perfect on any kind of fish you ordered. Now it is SO greasy and the fish is so NOT fresh. You can't hold or even fork a piece of fish into your mouth because it's that crumbly from how heavy the oil is. The taste is foul and an embarrassment to the name "Brits" implying it is British style. The service is absolutely terrible in that I went in to order and had to wait 5 solid minutes for anyone to come up to the counter and greet me. They rushed me, had no advice on what to get, and said to me "you're not eating in are you?" I wasn't going to anyways but was super annoyed she basically told me I had no choice. The pricing is completely outrageous for the disgusting mush they serve you. $45 for three pieces of halibut that tastes like month old cod. It should be illegal to lead people to believe they'll be getting excellent quality by charging so much then serving such groul. I give two stars because the fries were greasy as hell but good enough with the amount of salt and vinegar I love to load on & because the fish was still technically edible although I threw mine out. I was born and raised in England and have spent half of my life there, shuttling back and forth between Hull and Edmonton, so I'm cashing in on my authority! Try the haddock (I can't abide cod) with tartar sauce - the fish is flaky and the batter is fresh. Their chips are just lovely: thick cut and extremely flavourful. The mushy peas are alright, although much thicker than back home and with much less salt (I love my salt). If you're a fan of England's curry sauces, though, I wouldn't recommend Brits' version. It has a funny aftertaste that just doesn't go well with the chips. Everything else is fantastic. The service, the food, the atmosphere. And oh, the options. Cornish pasties! Pickled eggs! GREASE, everywhere! I could only eat a wee bit of this delicious smelling fishy in a batter. It was just way to greasy and soggy (most definitely not how we do it back home.) The onion rings though were my dinners savior they were huge, crunchy and delicious. The atmosphere is very cool and British & the whole get to the counter order what you want off the chalk board and they bring it right to ya was great. The staff was friendly and religiously kept the wine flowing. I didn't take my mine to go but my boyfriend was pretty happy to see his fish come out in the funnies section of a British paper he read it all the way home in fact. The place is simple and casual. Pay for your food at the counter and it is usually delivered to your table with 5-10 mins tops. They have alcohol bevvies, bottled drinks and fountain drinks. I'm really glad that I finally stopped in to try this place out. I've had a craving for Fish & Chips lately, but hadn't gone for it in so long, that I really wasn't sure where to go anymore. It's rare that I find myself downtown these days, but that's where I was on Friday. We had the option to struggle with rush hour, or sit somewhere for a bit. As we drove by 116 street, the answer became clear. Finally, I could crush this craving. It was still pretty early - we arrived just after 4 pm on a Friday. There was one other customer in the place when we go there (it filled up with a party of 10 and two other tables of two while we were there). I was taken aback by two things when ordering (you order at the counter, then sit and they bring your food out to you). 1) The prices seemed really high - $17.00 for 2 pc Cod & Chips. This does not include a drink or coleslaw. Once the food came out, I could see the value and would happily pay this price again. and 2) Since you're paying when you order, you are tipping without having tried the food, and the service at the counter was fairly cold. We both ordered 2 pc Cod & Chips and a fountain pop (you serve yourself) and the total came to over $40.00. After going to their website today, I see that you have the option to get a "full meal" for $20.00 which would have included the drink and a side - which is a great deal since the sides are $2.00 each and I believe the fountain pop was $2.85. If that option was on the chalkboard menu, I missed it - it would have been nice if the cashier had offered it. Turned out... the fish was so big, it was not an issue to not have a side. Seriously... the fish is HUGE. I understand the prices a bit now. I definitely only needed to order a one peice, but it was nice to be able to take the other one home and eat it later (especially since dinner was so early!). The fish tasted very fresh.. there was no "fishy" taste at all. The batter was light, but crispy and the fries were absolutely perfect. Parking is Free, but the lot can be pretty crowded. This is probably the best fish and chips in the city and the menu is filled with chip shop staples, 5 or 6 different types of fish, but I generally get cod and chips with mushy peas and a tea. Today, I decided to get my regular order plus a seafood chowder which was good, albeit a tad undercooked. It's a rare treat, but my companion and I had just left the gym and were really hungry. I've never had a deep fried Mars bar, but they have it on the menu. There are complaints on here about the place needing a good clean, but compared to most chip shops I've been in, this place is immaculate. I'm not sure that it was that much better in terms of taste or quality to justify the cost. We had two one piece fish and chip meals, and a tiny side of mushy peas for $38. One of the best fish and chips places i've been able to find in Edmonton, and I order them whenever I see them on a menu! They even have a great gluten-free batter. The place seems to be under new management but i'm glad they haven't seemed to change any of the recipes. Nice, crispy batter, not too greasy, fresh cut fries, and homemade tartar sauce. And they leave the bottle on the tables so there's no charging you for extra, which is great for someone like me that puts tartar sauce on her fries too! The food is always good, but we were there on June 19, 2020 amid the covid 19, and the only precautions taken were facemasks on waiters and tables were distanced, but tables were not sprayed to be cleaned, they were just wiped down with a wet cloth brought out of the kitchen, the ketchup and hollandaise sauce bottles were left on the table so all customers would be handling them. The halibut meat is so tough that I have a hard time cutting it up with the knife that the server has provided. It's rubbery! We had heard good things about Brits, from a British ex pat no less, and were looking forward to a good feed. And the fish was good -- my cod and my friend's sole were firm and tasty, with a light batter as you would expect although oily. We discussed the chips, wondering whether they were fresh cut or frozen, but really all we could taste was the oil in which they were fried. I was raised in Lethbridge, where we had a "real" English family doling out great fish and chips, and Brits really didn't live up to my memory. Perhaps it was the indifferent service, or the chips, or the dark room which really didn't add much interest to the meal. I'll go back, but it won't be for the fish, and certainly not for the chips, but the chowder was exceptional -- full of a variety of types of fish and beautifully spiced. That is when they are on top of their game, for the many times I have been here, a couple times I have been let down with the prep of the fish. Friggin delicious from start to finish. The room is very basic, no frills, and the service is pretty much the same. However, the food is the thing. We had halibut, cod, and turbot which were all cooked to a perfect temperature with crisp, delicious savoury batters. Chips were properly seasoned and quite good. Mushy peas and coleslaw were both absolutely delicious. Also, their tartar sauce is acidic and delicious with great creamy, pickled flavours. It's no frills, but the food is killer. If you've a hankering for fish and chips, this is the place to go. It's a no frills typical British chippy, but my, it was so good. My girlfriend and I went there for dinner last night, on our way to the Winspear. The menu is on a board of front, so we checked it out carefully. We decided to get "The Works" - 2 pcs cod, 2 pcs haddock, 2 coleslaw, chips and onion rings. When the server brought this foot high platter we nearly died. Two old women with a platter of food that would feed four. Everything was wonderful, a light crispy batter on the huge pieces of fish, perfectly cooked, excellent hand cut fries, huge crispy onion rings and delicious coleslaw. We could only eat half and the leftovers were wrapped up in newspaper to take home. If you love fish & chips, be sure to give Brits a try. You won't be sorry! read more
