I recently found Siren Records in McHenry, IL. not only do they have music but many options for vintage stereo equipment and repairs. The owner Bill is very knowledgeable and great to work with. They repaired my 1970's Sony PS-T3 turntable and it runs great now. I did find a nice upgrade turntable as well. They are enlarging the shop and have huge selection of vinyl. Bill and his crew know their stuff about music and they definitely have a lot of it! They carry lots of new music, but their focus seems to be on used records and CDs. There's a lot to go through. They also carry a huge amount of used stereo equipment and Joe can answer just about any question you might have on any subject you can come up with regarding stereo equipment, speakers, accessories and jazz music too. He's there on Wednesdays and Saturdays. One caveat: the store can be quite cluttered with stacks of boxes and records and other items and sometimes they make it hard to get through aisles or inhibit your ability to shop items they have in stock. That's to both you and the shop's detriment. I brought it up to the owner once and he got short with me, so I left and haven't been back since, only because it's about an hour's drive for me. Bill and his family are just great. He is very helpful and patient. He helped me get my 1982 turntable in top shape. He gave me a free needle and lots of advice. His friend, Joe, also works there. Joe got me all squared away on the latest in shortwave radio. This is a very nice place to stop in and shop. They have a good hi-fi section in the back with all kinds of interesting equipment. Had a friend drop off my Pioneer Reel to Reel RT-707 for repair. Had it boxed for over 15 years since last I used it. Paid $125.00 for it from my neighbor, never worked good so I boxed it. The guys at Siren took what I felt like was forever. But they explained to me that parts were unavailable. So I waited. So when I received a call that it was ready a few months later, I was excited, I've been waiting for this for a long time now. The bottom line is this. These guys did an outstanding job. We were in the area and passed this store, Being the Record Geek I am, we had to go in. Hopefully this is more of a temporary thing as they have some signs up stating that if it isn't priced it's not necessarily a dollar. Well it seems a lot of their records are not priced. All 10 I picked were not. The store has quite a bit of vinyl and has more than your average number of obscure titles. I was impressed with the selection. The no price thing is a deal killer for me, having to bring records up to the front and have them look them up one by one on discogs takes forever and make them way over priced. I ended up only taking a few and the whole experience was too much of a hassle. They guys who work these are very nice and personable but why make the buying process so hard read more

As an avid record collector I was excited to stop by Siren Records for the first time today. They have a good selection and spoke with 1 employee, he was knowledgeable and nice to talk to. He let me know that they have a hi-if room in the rear of the store. They had a decent selection of older equipment. While in the hi-if room, I noticed a box of records along with all of the equipment that was for sale, the records had price tags on them. While I started looking through the albums the owner walked into the room and said, "stay out of my albums", I thought he was kidding but the look on his face said he wasn't. I apologized & said I saw the price stickers and assumed that they were for sale. He said I buy albums too & walked away. I was a bit taken back that he was upset about someone looking at albums in a record store. My thought is if he had albums that were not for sale to put them away or put a tag on the box to mark them as not for sale. Also, another way he could have gotten his point across would have been to say something like, sorry that box of albums is not for sale. With that being said, hopefully he was just having a bad day and is not how he treats his customers on a regular basis. Aside from the unpleasant experience with the owner I would have given this a 5 star review. read more

This is a great place. Not only do they have a fantastic collection of vinyl, but they are very helpful in getting your turntable set up correctly. I have two turntables and I bought new cartridges for both. The prices were very fair and they were installed quickly and with expertise. They also have a back room with used gear for sale. Love this record store! I'm a record collector and lover of music and vinyl... Bill and Jenny's store is one of my favorite record shops! There are not many stores today where the owners take time to spin new recommended lps for you and then dig out some if their own gems in their record collection to give you a listen. Like Mutha Goose's only self titled lp and Slauter Xstroyes' Winter Kill both killer albums and super hard to find. The prices are decent I found some old Beatles albums in good condition around 10 bucks. The owner is a nice guy and even cleaned one of my albums before I bought it I will be back to visit Siren records soon. read more

Great expertise, selection and atmosphere. Trades and prices are fair. This shop also does turn table repairs (simple maintenance) and carries more than just records. They have a great selection of amps, tables, electronics, and last time I was there they even had pinball machines. You won't regret at least stopping into this store to have a look. read more

UPDATE: Last week, I went in and had my 11 of my LPs ultrasonically cleaned. Wow, what a difference! A couple of them remain noisy (these are clearly bad pressings), but all of the rest sound 10x better! Very little, if any, noise - even during the quiet passages. Before you give up on noisy vinyl, bring your LPs by for a cleaning. They only charge .50 a piece. Go for it! read more

Unbelievable selection of vintage, pristine jazz records...one of best I have seen. Also, just about every other genre on vinyl, including very hard to find records. Be prepared for a long shopping experience...they are loaded down with thousands of selections...impossible to get through even a small percentage of inventory in quick measure!!! This said, the owner, Bill...sets the standard for great customer service. From the second you walk in, they will offer to help you locate whatever you want, then allow you to browse unencumbered for hours. They will play any record that you want to hear without hesitation. But best of all, Bill is a great guy...very nice and generous (as is his wife). I left with an armful of great records...Bill really took care of me. I can't wait to go back. No rating OR 0! Brought my AM/FM receiver to this place of business in January 2017. Unit sat at his shop till May 2017. Kept stating other repairs were in front of mine. When I originally dropped the unit off for repair it was locked in "Protection" mode and he stated the repair would consist of capacitor and transistor replacements, "standard repair" for 150.00. I paid the 150.00 upfront with money received from selling him old records. While waiting for the unit to be returned from repair, Bill called me in late April or early May 2017 and said my unit was back from repair but when I travelled to his store I found that the unit was NOT mine. I had to identify my unit after we searched around his store for it. It had new scratches on the top and the bass control knob was missing, very poorly handled. Bill (owner) called me on or about May 25 (approximately 5 months after I dropped it off for repair) stating the unit was returned from repair and that his technician could not figure out how to fix it. It was returned to me with four transistors that apparently were replaced. NO OTHER PARTS WERE REPALCED including Capacitors and Resistors. The service was inadequate and incomplete according to what Bill told me would be done to service the unit and the unit is still in "protection" mode. I called Bill to request that he refund me my 150.00 and he and his wife got angry and disconnected the phone call. I also tried to work this out with Bill by suggesting he could provide me with a similar "working" unit at no charge to me and he did not respond to that request. Don't use these guys for repair! read more

A very friendly staff who are very knowledgeable and explained all my options to help reduce costs on the repair without sacrificing the sound quality. Simply awesome place. I have been getting back into records and this is definitely the place to go. Purchased many records and not one issue. Then my 35 year old Dual Turntable had problems. The owner Bill and his lovely wife took care of it and from talking with him I can see he knows all about these type of repairs. When it comes to independent record stores in the Lake County area, this one is the cream of the crop. I've been coming over here for over three years for all my music needs. Not only are the selections plentiful and diverse, but the owners are some of the most knowledgeable people you will meet. They've helped me with everything from turntables to stereos and even music recommendations that tickled my fancy. This is the only record store that I am willing to drive a half hour to get to. Each time, I leave satisfied with my decision. I had a pair of speakers that I purchased recently that didn't sound good so I brought them in. The owner checked them out right then as I continued browsing records and long story short, he took the busted speakers off my hands and gave me a nice working set for $20. Even explaining to me what exactly was wrong with the speakers I had brought in! This is the place to go for your music needs. 5/5 highly recommend! read more

I highly recommend this place, I saw their ad on Craigslist stating that they had the lowest prices on used audio gear, I went there, and they were right. They had a vintage Sansui 661 stereo receiver in very good condition that they were selling for about half the price you would pay on ebay, Craiglist, or other audio shop. I asked if he accepted partial trades for used gear and he said yes. When it was all said and done I made an even trade that was a very good deal for me. They don't try to get rich off of one sale, they want you to leave happy so you come back again.
