We had the most epic day with Guide Garrett! The weather was gorgeous and the sites were stunning. Captain Conner kindly shuttled us to the dock location (a very generous exception when I misunderstood the instructions). Guide Garrett, powerful waterman of the Sitka Sound (think a younger more approachable King Triton of The Little Mermaid), created the most wonderful day. He knew pretty much everything about anything oceanic or Alaska history and ALMOST all the bird species (it was a Pigeon Guillemot, Garrett). Whether you are an experienced paddler or a newbie, you will enjoy this outing. The guides are extremely friendly and helpful, and they point out the magnificent natural features of Baranof Island. The waters are generally pretty calm on the west side of the island where this tour takes place, so you can get in really close to some amazing rock formations and see all the sea urchins, starfish, eagles, moon jellies, mussels, sea lions, and other wildlife. We returned to Sitka and knew we needed to kayak. Connor picked us up at the Westmark and Liz was our guide. The half day group was perfect. Just 5 people plus the guide. I appreciated the quick decision to change the tour approach based on weather. It made for the most perfect paddle as we navigated around in low tide. This was one of my favorites from my trip. Kayaking was so much fun and we were able to get some really great scenic views and it was cool seeing and holding starfish. Hearing the barnacles, and watching an eagle up close. The weather was really good and our tour guide was amazing. She knew everything very well and she has a great personality. Sitka is the perfect place for sea kayaking and Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures is the perfect company to guide you. We did the Islands Paddle & Lost Fort Trek tour, it was an awesome experience and a great way to learn about the history of Sitka. Mitch was an awesome guide, very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They start off by giving you some safety tips, we had never gone sea kayaking before and the foot operated rudder makes it easier to turn than a regular kayak. We first paddled around some nearby islands where we got to see a bald eagle and its nest. After getting used to the kayak we headed to an island that housed one of the abandoned WW2 forts. Once we got to the island we saw various tide pool creatures and docked for our mini hike. We were told there were plans to make the fort into a park next year so we were lucky to be able to see the fort prior to any renovations. After exploring the fort for a while we walked the island a little where we sampled some salmon berries and nettles. On the trip back to port we tried some sea kelp and saw some sea lions swimming nearby. Definitely an unforgettable experience and a highly recommended excursion. We stayed at the Aspan Hotel just a short walk away from the harbor, and the folks at the visitor's center said we should check out this company for kayak tours. I walked up to the bright colored bus, and the owners were so friendly and accommodating. My mom and I went kayaking for two hours with Garrett, and it was the highlight of our trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and fun, and we saw bald eagles, whales, and other wonders that were pure Alaska! read more

Our kayaking trip in Sitka with Garret was probably the highlight of our Alaskan cruise. The group was very small--just 5. Thus Garret was able to pace the trip to fit the group. The weather was spectacular and the water was like glass. We saw a few sea-lions and an eagle's nest. We also saw an eagle swoop down and catch something--a fish? Halfway through the trip we had a chocolate, molasses ginger cookie the size of a frisbee. Yum! The outfit is a small mom and pop organization-- long time natives of Alaska. They gave us all the gear we needed to keep us dry. It was extremely reasonable, compared to the trips offered by the cruise line. My husband, David and I, strongly recommend it! read more

Wow I'm the first to review this place? I'm surprised, anyways my wife and I went on a cruise from Seattle to Alaska and one of out Ports of Call was Sitka. Nice little place and while I'm of the topic it was one of the better ports (less tourist trappy).... Hated Ketchikan. My wife and I decided to not do an excursion from the cruise line to see if we could save some cash and we found Sitka Sound Adventures. A friendly girl with a bandanna was in front of a bus and told us about the area and about some kayak options... No hard selling and seemed nice so we gave it a shot. Went for a 2.5 hour guided tour with another couple.. it was great. Good price and relaxing, beautiful day. I love that it was not over crowed, like all the other groups of 6 - 10 going out at the same time. I hate typing and dont write too many longer reviews but I like to support good people and this group seemed to be that. About $150 for both of us as compared to almost double that one the cruise was a steal. Thanks again read more

I went on the Lost Fort Kayaking adventure with 5 of my family members (our ages range from 25 to 62) and We all loved it. The employees are super friendly, knowledgable and down to earth.Our tour guide's name was Chris and he was awesome!! My parents struggled with the steering of the Kayak (although it wasn't very difficult) and Chris was nice enough to tow my parents for the last half hour. We saw tons of Bald Eagles, starfish, an otter, crab & krill. We hiked around a small island for about an hour and picked wild salmon berries. All 6 of us loved our experience and would do it again in a second. read more

My wife, two children(5 and 7) and I took the 2.5 hour trip around Sitka with these folks. It was fantastic!! We stopped there on a cruise. Their bus is located about 200 yards from the tender dock. They outfit you with all the equipment you need. Their equipment is top notch. The trip is outstanding. Our guide was friendly, competent and helpful. I would return to Sitka and take a longer expedition with these folks anytime. If you take a trip with them, you will not be disappointed. read more

These guys are great!! As good as it gets, as the saying goes! We called the morning of to see if they could get us in the water since it was one of the three days of nice weather this summer. Our guide Greg was great We wanted to go alone, but they wanted us to have a guide since it was our first time in the ocean. (we kayak on lakes), and I'm glad he came. He showed us all the "hot" spots of eagles and fun little inlets. Since he was born and raised in town, he knew. They give excellent service and went out of their way to make sure we had a good day! We were slightly inexperienced and Alison gave us some instructions to help us out. We had an amazing trip and the kayaks and gear were perfect. There were 6 of us in our group who rented kayaks and paddle gear from Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures (SSOA) for a 6 night/7 day self guided expedition into the Tongass National Forest south of Sitka. We went in June and the weather was mild and no bugs. I have been paddling for many years and have used multiple outfitters and can confidently attest that you will receive excellent service and equipment from SSOA. Owner/operators Alison and John are experienced, very friendly, helpful and safety conscious, their gear is first rate and the rental fees are reasonable. They offer day trips, multi day self guided rentals (like ours) and multi day guided expeditions. Our adventure took us south, paddling down the coast among the many islands. I particularly enjoyed the outer islands with their austere beauty and remote feel. The Goddard hot springs are also a gem and not to be missed. We made a great call by staying in the forest service cabins which were a welcome refuge (Samsing Cove, Kanga Bay, Sevenfathom Bay and the Sitka local Tom Young cabins). We also elected to use the SSOA water taxi to return us to Sitka at the end of our trip which was very convenient. This was my first experience in Southeast Alaska and I'm now hooked on its grandeur, pristine wilderness and wildlife. I will definitely be back for more. read more

My family and I went kayaking with Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We took a 3.5 hour kayak tour around the bay and our halfway point was a stop at an island that used to be a military bunker during WW2. For a military history buff this would be amazing, but we told our tour guide we preferred the "nature" aspect of the island. He ended up taking us on a nature hike through the small island. One of the best parts of this was picking and eating wild salmon berries that grow all over the island. My only slight warning would be to tell people that the paddle back in from the island can be pretty difficult. Totally would do this again!!! read more

We came into Sitka looking for a water taxi to and from Silver Bay. Allison and John and the rest of the staff were so helpful and kind. We got to the big blue bus and they let us leave our big heavy packs while we walked around Sitka before getting on the water taxi. They let us borrow bear spray for the week, saving us $80! And John showed us the hatchery on the way out and a really awesome cave on the way back and stopped for us to watch sea lions eating salmon! We had such an awesome experience and hope that we can go back to Sitka someday and maybe kayak this time! Highly, highly recommend! read more

The overall adventure on the kayaks in Sitka was amazing. Liz was a great guide and was very patient with us as beginners. However, we were told to store our belongings in their "secured" bus. We gave our belongings to Michaela who put them in the bus only to find that my backpack had been rifled through and cash was missing. I emailed the owner and heard no response. read more

What an INCREDIBLE two hours!!! Greta, our guide was "lucky" enough to paddle with our 8 year old - Greta was so very patient as my daughter talked CONSTANTLY and asked questions. Saw a beautiful viewpoint of Sitka, I only wish we could have had more time in Sitka and had a longer tour. Great for families.
