I popped in SJ Cigars just to see if they had any hookah tobacco and much to my surprise found that they were selling my favorite brand -- Tangiers. An (internet)buddy of mine makes this stuff out of the back of his lounge in San Diego and distributes it to various online merchants and shop owners throughout the country. However, SJ Cigars is selling it under the name "Delicioso Shisha" for more than double the cost, and it would almost seem as though they're trying to give the impression that it's their own line of tobacco. Prices on Al Fakher and Nakhla tobaccos may have been roughly standard -- I don't remember exactly. But as for the Tangiers -- and this stuff IS Tangiers, just with some of the flavor names changed -- you'll save a ton of money by buying online. Buy your charcoal online, too. Still, it's nice to know that someplace in Philly is paying attention to the good stuff, and that I can pick it up locally if I for some reason don't have time to wait for shipping. read more

Stopped in here to birthday shop and inquire about donations, and the owner was exceptionally friendly, helpful, and honest. I like to buy cigar boxes here for makeup, storage, etc, because cardboard boxes are $1 and wooden are $3--- awesome! They have so many awesome hookah supplies, and seemingly awesome deals all the time (% of glassware, etc.). Their house blend shishas all smell incredible, and I don't even smoke hookah- Gremlin is on my gift list! They also sell single shots for $2, and all sorts of supplies. Sometimes I wish I smoked tobacco pipes. Okay, no I don't, I only wish I smoked pipes when I go in here... they have a Butter Rum tobacco. AWESOME. I want to smell it but I'm too shy to ask. I'm sure this place is great for cigar needs and accessories, but if you smoke cigarettes and roll your own, you'd better have a look inside the boxes of tubes before you shell out about five dollars a box for them. I didn't want to have to leave this review but after four times of buying tubes from SJ Cigars, I have to because other people need to know. You'll be paying five dollars a box for damaged tubes, which, say you buy four boxes, that's a little over 20 dollars. You could just buy packs of cigarettes instead, because 1/4 of the tubes in their boxes are even usable, and the ones that aren't crinkled up are weak and flimsy for some reason. You'll frustrate yourself trying to use them, even with the most dextrous hand, believe me. I have never seen this happen, let alone this many times. At other shops they are usually sold as 'damaged,' for around a dollar, not full price. I really wanted to like this place, but I'm happy to take the extra walk to Harry's. read more

I have gone to this place a number of times before to pick up Djarum cigarettes for my best friend. Prior to today they would have gotten two stars. However, I was there without enough cash to buy three packs totaling approximately $21 and was told that they only take debit for cigars. This would be like my going to the grocery store and being told they don't take debit for toilet paper. I mean, what's the difference??? Review of S.J. Cigars Over the past couple of years, I have been going to S.J. Cigars (the location near South Street). In all honesty, I actually would not consider myself a regular; however, in a short period of time I have become very close to a few of the other patrons who visit there more often than I do and also the staff. Due to where I live in the city and for other reasons, I usually spend my time in another lounge closer to where I live. Even though S.J. Cigars can be out of my way, I do make a point to stop by and say hello to the staff and to make some normal purchases (cigars, cigar accessories, etc). Their customer service is outstanding and on a few occasions, I have brought business partners with me to their lounge for business discussions/meetings etc. S.J. Cigars has a beautiful outdoor area behind the lounge area, which is very private and also quite peaceful. I know of no other lounges near me that has an outside area like this, which I find quite enjoyable and unique in a large city. I have been to lounges all over the country! With that said, I would like to specifically thank Doug and Christina for their outstanding customer service and the respect they have shown me and others when I have stopped in to enjoy a cigar and their facilities. I often do business with companies because of the "people/employees" and not the actual company itself. I go out of my way to make purchases here because on one cold evening when I was walking down South street to clear my head, I wanted to enjoy a cigar I brought with me and I realized I accidentally forgot my cutter. I knew it was late and S.J. Cigars would most likely be closed, which was true. However, when I turned the corner and walked down the block I met Doug (pretty sure it was the 1st time we met) and he was more than happy to make sure my cigar was cut for me so I could be along my way and enjoy the rest of my evening. The gates had already been closed and locked and he was clearly on his way home but he took the time to take care of a customer even though I was not there to even buy anything. These are the types of encounters that I never forget! Doug and Christina are true asset to S.J. Thought I found a reliable source for my tobacco of choice. Very first order spent $100+ on loose tobacco for the free delivery. All is good, right? Not so much. Delivery never arrived. They refused to refund. Basically told to go pound sand. What a disappointment. Poor business model, poor customer service, a waste of my time and certainly my money. Never again. read more

Moldy Tobacco and no refund. I once stopped in SJ Cigar store on my way through Philly for some tobacco. The manager gave us his card and said " you can order online as well". So we started ordering online because it was the cheapest option for Stokkebye Amsterdam shag we've ever found. So I ordered 6 cans of tobacco when i got home, it would last me a few months. Now, Ive never heard anything about tobacco expiring, it just drys out and you can rehydrate when your ready to smoke it. They don't print an expiration date on the package? I opened up the 3rd can and it was full of mold! I then went through my 3 remaining cans and they all had gone moldy! I call the shop the next day and explained the situation and they basically said " we don't care, we sell enough tobacco and don't need your business". They would provide no refunds and no replacements . Horrible customer service if you ask me. Im sure they got a bad batch from there supplier who they probably could've put in a claim with and got replacements themselves. They had no interest in helping out there customers. Last time I checked if you sell a product that has gone bad, any other business would want to replace it and figure out what had gone wrong. So watch out about getting expired/moldy product from these guys, they do not care about there customers and will not help you out. read more

I would like to correct a common misconception. I may be wrong about my previous conclusion. This store does appear to be repackaging Tangier hookah tobacco and selling as their own brand. They are also repackaging the Egyptian Nakhla brand as well as Al Basha and Mizo (both made by Nakhla).. I have gone to the Philadelphia store several times to buy hookah tobacco, charcoals, and cigars. Their "house specialty" hookah tobacco in zip bags is a generally poor blend of Nakhla flavors. You get very little and it is a poor bargain. The unbranded tobacco in the plastic jars is much better. The plastic jar tobacco may be the Tangiers, but as I said, it is often unbranded, but has been sold under the Delicioso name. The charcoals they sell are very poor, half the coals do not burn at the bottom and I have wast more coals to keep the hookah lit. The brand of coals they sell is called Three Kings. They sell a traditional Egyptian charcoal that is hard to light, but once lit burns well. They also sell Nakhla and Al Fakhar tobacco. Their cigars are mostly good and they have a very good selection.. However, their "house specialty" discount cigars called "Everyday Joe" burn very poorly. In conclusion, this store has a good selection, but their quality is not the best. They often try to push customers into buying their own line of cigars. read more
