Just a note that last time I stopped by around the last week of August there was another barber working with Alex, a younger guy who had been waiting for a customer who had supposed scheduled an appointment with him (probably a friend of his) and while he waited he didn't want to cut the hair of a customer that walked by. My boyfriend is super picky with his cuts and he knows how different technique has to be used for asian hair. Alex did a fantastic job and my bf is super happy with his cut. I'm a very rare reviewer on Yelp. I'd rather see what others think than contribute - but I got my first cut by Alex yesterday as I wanted to see if I could find someone I like locally, vs using my barber whose schedule is frequently in flux or too busy for me. After yesterday, I don't think I'll be using my old barber anymore! Alex stopped to confirm what I wanted a few times, a little more here, some there, and then eventually we got it. Great old school Astoria barber shop. I walked in on a Monday at 2. Alex asked if I could wait as there was a guy in the chair and 2 call in appointments ahead of me. No problem, cool A/C was flowing so I chilled. Wait was about 45 minutes and in that time 3 other guys walked in with no appointments and waited their turn Alex gave me a perfect low fade cut that my wife even liked (she never likes my haircuts, clothes - don't get me started)! $11 is a steal for this cut. I've been through different barbers and more high-end hair places, Alex is clearly skilled with hair cuts for a very reasonable price. Apparently, Alex has been at this location for 15 years. $10 (I give him $5 tip) bucks gets you an efficient cut, without annoying chit-chat. The place is very basic and the calendar with kittens on the wall makes me feel warm inside. Bring a picture of the type of haircut you want. I was lucky enough to stumble into this place 4 years ago. Alex is by far the best barber in Astoria (I tried 3 or 4 other places, but was never satisfied). He's friendly, efficient, and always cuts your hair the way you like. He works fairly fast, but never at the expense of quality. Usually, you get what you pay for, but leaving this place will make you feel like you got a hell of a deal for $10 (pre-tip, of course). This is a really cool, calm and comfortable place to get a haircut. He'll ask you what's your style and is very professional. Nice guy too. Been coming here for many years now and when the shop is open on days I need a haircut, this is my main place 8 out of 10 times I get a trim or haircut. It's like an old neighborhood spot and that's the way I like it. It's just two barbers and just as many seats. If there are many appointments, the small wait area is quiet but it would seem better to come back later. If you would compare the barber shop to production, call it handmade and and not an assembly line. His cuts are neat, clean and efficient. read more

Saw great reviews here so I decided to give it a shot. At first glance upon arrival, the place looks really simple and plain. There are only two barber chairs and I was worried because the two cuts prior to me was too fast. Alex was already cutting another gentleman's hair and there was another waiting ahead of me. I told Alex I was going to grab a coffee and to put me in line. He said to be back in 10 minutes. 10 minutes?!?!? For a haircut and a half??? Little did I know, he was really skilled with his fade game! After some 20 minutes of Edward Scissorhands spent on my hair, some after-shampoo...my hair it came out looking much better than I expected. He's good! My hair was a mess before. read more

I discovered Alex sometime last year, after finding myself frustrated with the run-of-the-mill stylists up and down 30th St. Why pay thirty dollars on a scrappy cut when you can have a real artist for ten plus tip? The steps are simple: Find Alex, the good one, and have your best cut yet! As far as the old man -he's a jolly-good fellow, but he just doesn't stack up to Alex's abilities. Alex shapes up better and takes a little bit more time around the edges. He is king when it comes to back-of-the-head detailing. It's hard to complain when the cut comes to under twenty (make sure to tip at least 3/5 dollars over ten). I simply use the extra dough to go into Michail's Shoe Repair around the block (28-56 31st St) directly following my cut to have a quick-shine for under five dollars. This is a case where the barber makes the shop. Otherwise entirely unassuming with only two barbers chairs, well used tools of the trade and a few scattered papers you might not expect a great cut. First of all you're getting a real haircut with scissors. I prefer some length left which requires thinning to sit well, he also did a good taper in the back and methodically made sure everything was even. Edges were done with clippers. So, nice haircut in a comfortable friendly little shop and at a price ($10) that probably needs to go up a little. read more
