They take their time, they're not sloppy with their work and they give me exactly what I ask for every time. I like this barbershop a lot. When it's time to cut the mop off my head, Mark is my go-to-guy. I feel comfortable and trust his work. He doesn't just cut hair, he creates art. I feel confident when I'm outside and always up for a photo. The place is great. Spacious than most barbershops in my area. Whenever I enter the shop, the place smells great, fresh and clean. Comfortable waiting area with TV and the usual magazines. And of course, observing my barber gracefully walk around the client, engaging in conversation but never too heavy. Offering his expertise to provide the best possible look for the customer. A true professional and overall people person. All in all, as much as I could go on praising Mark for his great cuts over the months that made many social events enjoyable. This is where I stop this review. i came here after reading all of the positive reviews and every single one of them were right. honestly, i really didn't expect much coming in but once he (mark) was cutting my hair, i saw the effort and precision he puts into what he does. mark listened to everything i asked for and gave me more suggestions (point/line) to make my hair look even better. he's a really friendly guy and prices are exactly what you pay for. some places charge you more than what you get. actually, most places do that. but mark really is against that and it shows through his work ethic and precision. if you're in the area or even if you're not from around here, i highly recommend coming and getting your hair cut from the owner, mark. i will certainly be back and i hope everyone who reads this review gives him and his business a chance. read more

As a long time resident of Woodside, I had been going to the barber shop since Mark (originally from Uzbekistan) opened and prior to him, was established by a gentleman named Simon. Mark is a good barber however, for some reason when I would go there he would pass me on to his other "stylist", Mind you he would have no current customers waiting, it was clearly obvious. It wasn't' until he saw the Christmas bonus I gave to his "stylist" and not him when he began to cut my hair. That being stated, back then hair cuts were going for $11.00. In Jan 2014 Mark had decided to raised it to $13.00. In Jan of 2015 he raised to $15.00, In June the same year it was jolted to $20.00 a hair cut. Mr. Mark's reason behind it was his song and dance titled " They are raising my rent". That was the last time I utilized him, no barbershop was charging so much during that time in the neighborhood and the fluctuating increase in price in such short period of time was suspicious. This was certain, increases in rent were occurring however, the neighboring business did not demonstrate any fluctuating increase of cost of services and goods for that matter. for example, the neighboring shoe repair man store seemed unaffected by the rent increases in the alleged area as his prices and services did not change in lieu of what Mr. Mark's had stated. In addition, the corner coffee shop did not raise their prices either? why so?. I see now his hair cuts are going for $30.00 with complimentary coffee, cigar whatever. This man is clearly exploiting Woodside residents and taking advantage of the flow of migrating Manhattanites over the years into this area, all who have been accustomed to paying high end prices for everything including haircuts. A very clever and cunning move, but at whose expense? Mr. Mark's increases in comparison to other barber shops within the area are far beyond reasonable .This leaves one to perceive his attributes as arrogant,opportunistic,lacking empathy and oppressive for the people of this neighborhood. The picture posted in his folio alongside the councilman, presents itself as an attempt to guise as one who is supportive of the community,.Although It is understood Mark is running a business, his establishment based on those prices does not reflect the best interest of the long term and new residents of this community. read more

The staff are friendly and the place has a nice community atmosphere. Take it from a kid who's lived in this neighborhood all my life (19 years), there is no better place to get a haircut in all of New York, hell probably the world. I've tried most barber shops in Sunnyside and Woodside growing up and even a few in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and I used to hate getting haircuts as a kid because most barbers were awkward and just couldn't deliver. Skillman Barber Shop is different. The best way I can put it is there are two things this place does better than anyone else: quality and consistency. You'll always get an amazing haircut whenever you walk in here, and that's no secret: the place does get busy. They still love to take walk ins, it's quick and easy, but it's much easier to make an appointment. Every time I walk in my bro Arvin has always got a great attitude and asks me how I'm doing. As I sit down we chat for the next half hour or so while he gives the best haircut a guy could ask for, and I can't help but crack a smile halfway through because I see how amazing my hair looks. They really care about their craft and make sure the haircut not only meets your standards, but theirs too. They can tell you how to style your hair, how to take care of it, and how to treat it long term. The best part is you're not just another customer at this place, they'll remember you whether you come here after a month or three months. They really get to know you and you get to know the people there too if you go there consistently. Introverts dont have to worry either if you don't really feel like talking all too much. They're great if you want bullshit small talk or actual conversations. It's really made me look forward to getting a haircut every month.
