Just had my hair cut at Fernandez Barbershop and it was a wonderful experience. Raymond the Magic did my hair and it was perfectly cut. I just wanted a no frills old school haircut and this place did not disappoint. It was only $12 and for my style of hair it was better than some $50 plus cuts that I have experience. My biggie is my sides. I hate when after a haircut the sides of my hair stand up. Here it was perfectly blended. WOW...... You better like Salsa or Spanish music cause this is the music of choice. I got a solid haircut from Lapy [1st chair and apparently the owner]. He's family of the boys who own Fernandez Barbershop #1 on Broadway in the Woodside neighborhood. They speak some English [enough to communicate with non-hispanic clients] but we spoke in Spanish. A cut is 12 dollars, good fade, decent shape-up. On a side note, it seems like no one is giving great shape-ups anymore =[ It's just three guys there, and from the chit chat, I gathered that one of the guys in on indefinite leave. When I was there a new guy, just arrived from DR, who was to take his place. This and shop #1 are definitely Dominican establishments...stereotypically this means: -good quality haircuts -lots of banter with you and other people -you could potentially not get their full attention I'll be back to see how it goes. read more

I was weary since I didn't want that style of cut but went in and Junior did a great job on my longer, scissor cut style. He was attentive, cool and confident. Would go back again. read more

If I could give low review I would they messed my hair so bad. I simply asked for them to leave the top and just give a simple 2 to a 3 fade on the sides. But they completely contradicted the instructions given and did whatever they wanted. This barber in the process did a decent job but it doesn't make up for how he messed up my top half of my head so badly. He cut the hair from the top which was stated to leave untouched, and pulled out the layering scissors, and used it on one side leaving it choppy. and didn't even bother doing it on the other side. But remember I said how I told him to leave un touched. If your gonna mess up my hair at-least leave it even. It's so bad it looks like I did it myself. read more

Awesome. Went here for the first time today because I needed a quick shape up before a trip and wasn't able to get to my normal barber. I have been going for maybe 5 years or more. I went to so many barbers in astoria and manhattan before settling on Fernandez. Simply, they never let me down. Every time my hair is cut perfect no matter what I ask for. Every barber is good, some better than others, but you can't go wrong if you don't get your favorite. Only problem is the guy at the end (I think it's Manny, I could be wrong so don't quote me on that, also a while ago they had been switching chairs). His haircuts are actually great but his hand is so strong one time I was bleeding after his cleanup razor shave behind your neck. I thought maybe it was a mistake but got him again another time and the shave hurt once again. Also, I don't understand the other reviewer who said they don't speak english. As I said, I've come here over 5 years and I've always spoken directly in english to every barber and always gotten a response and understanding in english. I have to take 1 star off because not only the one guy who hurts, but there was also one time where I actually had to have my mustache (as part of a costume) for an event, and I didn't tell them I wanted a shave. In all the years I have gone they have never once touch my facial hair. Well, for some dumb reason, that day the barber just shaved it off very quickly, it was over in less than a second. In a word, unfriendly. I'm new to the area and was excited to find a Dominican b'shop close by. 1). Greet your customers. Tell them where they are in line and an idea of how long it will be... In any language. 2) Dress like a barber and get off your phone when customers come in, at least to acknowledge them. 3) if you don't care about customers, you won't have a business. Walked in and the barbers looked at me like an alien. Thought the guy sitting down without a smock was a customer waiting but turns out he's a barber. Another customer came in and he gets up to cut his hair. Granted I had to run to the ATM when it was my turn. I tell the guy ill be right back which I was in 5 mins only to see he disappeared. The third guy's chair is now empty but he makes a phone call instead. Then he takes another customer in front of me. The second guy says my barber will be back in 5 but it's been a half hour. He does this so he can take another walk in customer. 45 mins later, I decide I'll spend my money somewhere else. What does it matter? It's only $14, right? I didn't stick around for the "service" since I couldn't get basic courtesy, which is usually free. read more

Don't go to Junior unless you just want a fade. I was very specific about what I wanted, even showed him a picture. He didn't do a thing I asked him, faded way too far into the top of my head, which negated about four months of growth. He tried to shape up around my ears and cut too far up one side of my head to the point that I look lopsided. Been coming here to a different barber for over a year and this was easily the worst haircut I've gotten. I've never even written a yelp review before today, positive or negative, but I had to throw my two cents in; that's how disappointed and frustrated I am with this "haircut." Unfortunately I have to update my review to 3 stars. A majority of the barbers here deserve 5 stars, but there are some that only deserve 1 or 2. I believe there are 3 Fernandez brothers that are the owners, and 2 out of the 3 are excellent at cutting hair. There are also several part time / non owner barbers such as Raymond who I went to the first time. Many of the part-time / non owner barbers are also great, but it is simply trial and error until you find someone you like. read more

I've been here about 10-15 times, and I've only received two good haircuts. Something is always off, the fade will be good but they don't cut the top right, or the fade isn't blended but the top is cut great. A couple of those times I had to go to another barber shop to fix what they messed up. You get what you pay for people. Won't be coming here anymore. read more

This is my barber shop it's an excellent place all the barbers are very skilled in any cut you want and they give very good shaves with reasonable prices it's like a party every time you go in their with bachata and merengue blasting the guys talking and laughing Spanish is their primary language there all from Dominican Republic but if you tell them what you want they understand they all take real pride on their work I would deffinetly recommend this place it's about a quarter block from don coqui by the 30 ave subway stop read more

I agree somewhat with kent, the barbers do talk amongst eachother but some of them are capable of still doing a good job while chatting. You just have to know who your barber is. Lapy does a good job and hes very decent when it comes to doing his job. The guy next to him Moreno (second seat) left my friend sitting there while he was on a phone call. Mean while I got my haircut with Raymond (third seat) doesnt speak that much english but the kid def. knows what he's doing. There's a fourth barber I forgot his name but everytime I go he's just sitting in his own seat. If I had to rate the haircut Raymond gave me I would give it 5 stars but the constant chatter amongst the barbers brings the whole experience down to a 4 stars. A haircut and shave costs $17 but I was so satisfied I gave him $30 read more

Worst experience I've ever had at a Barber Shop. Walked in and no one acknowledge me. I finally had to ask a guy who was apparently asleep if he was available. I'm Puerto Rican so I figured a Dominican Barber Shop would know what a fade haircut was. I asked for a fade and the the guy cutting my hair acknowledged that he understood what I wanted. He then spray my hair down with water, which I didn't think anything of at first (everyone has thier own process when cutting I thought), he leaned my head down and I decided to close my eyes and relax, that is until he began to shave my entire head with a straight razor. Lucky for me I've got a pretty even head, so it's not a complete disaster. I'm just annoyed that my Baber didn't even take the time to listen to me and acknowledge he understood when he obviously didn't, making an already bad first impression of the place even worst. I wish i could give this place 0 stars, I came here about a year ago but until today finally signed up for yelp and this had to be my first review. First of all the service was horrible, the attention horrible. Everything about this place is horrible. Last year i wanted to cut my hair into a trendy style with the world cup going on i wanted to look on point. However the person who cut my hair F@#$ed it up, i had let it grow out for the winter decent to work with and manageable, this dude comes in don't remember his name but if they have this guy working there then all of them must suck. This dude just grabs the buzzer and goes in starts really high with a number 1. Then grabs the scissors and cuts my top hair like if it was a bush, or a salad and he kept taking hair from all angles. This literally took him 10 minutes. Honestly if i wanted to get a haircut by a 10 year old i would have asked my little nephew. Don't come to this place i do not recommend it if you want trendy looks, or a stylish hairstyle. That was a bad summer for me thanks to that A$$ole plus i went to another place so they can fix the hair the only option they had was to cut it really short, military style because there was no way of fixing the bad job. read more
