I've been using Skin Solutions for a couple years now, and I'm getting a bit frustrated with the way they do business. Aside from Kelsey and some of the office staff, the way they bill and their third party associates is crazy. My credit score is 788. So natural I pay on time and keep tabs on my bills, but twice now, two years in a row, I've had bills get turned over to collections. Why? Because they didn't bill me for 6 months AFTER my procedure! That's unacceptable. Unfortunately that reflects poorly on Skin Solutions as a company. I went and essentially self-diagnosed what I needed. I more or less begged Hannah to treat my condition (that I had before, so I knew what I needed), but she wouldn't do more than send off some labs (because that's how they make their money). I didn't get better, because she wouldn't give me medicine, but you better believe they still wanted money for seeing me. So I did what I knew would get me taken care of, I called up and asked to see Kelsey. She didn't need to do anything to know what was wrong with me. Sure enough, she honored my request and I'm healed up now! Thanks, Kelsey! Unfortunately, I'm JUST now being billed for the labs that Hannah insisted I have done. And now I'm being charged $450 for a service that wasn't actually a service, but rather a way to make money. I'm sure I'll end up having the pay the $450, because I'm not gonna screw up my credit score, but you better bet I will not darken the doors of Skin Solutions again. They could be really good, but I'm over having to deal with their third party and worry whether they're gonna bill on time like the need to. Also, a similar situation happened to my roommate last year and he went through the same stuff. What a mess. This whole thing still isn't fixed, but hopefully soon they'll try to make the wrongs right. read more

I went to Dr Vanna Padilla to have a small, easy 0.5cm excision on my forehead twice in 2019 (nov & dec) - and it was still not removed so I had to go to another doctor (my THIRD attempt to excise my large pore) at a different practice to rectify my problem that could not be handled by Skin Solutions Dermatology. My new dermatologist handled the excision with ease and on the first try. The story does not end there. I had to pay for two doctor visits and two lab results, totaling over $800, and my excision still was not complete. I then had to pay the new dermatologist for the lab results and the excision which cost an additional $500 (for both the lab and the dr visit). That equates to a total of $1300. The part that truly bothers me is that I paid Skin Solutions for the first visit and two lab results = roughly $600. The final dr visit bill of roughly $200 I have not paid because the services rendered were not completed. They offered me a 10% discount which was insulting to say the least. They mentioned that they could not cancel the bill for non-rendered services because they said it would look shady to the lab. Basically they did not want to raise any red flags to the lab for "Skin Solutions Dermatology" and not being capable of doing the job that me, the client paid for. Being a small business owner myself, this doesn't sit well with me as I would never charge a client of mine for services not completed or rendered. With all this being said, and after trying to fix this problem off of social media, I have had zero luck in getting timely responses and/or a way to rectify this issue (outside of the 10% discount). My advice to anyone else is to find another provider if you want to get what you pay for the first go around. I will gladly provide the dermatologist's contact info that did complete the excision with easy and on the first try if anyone needs that info. Just private message me and I will send over the info for another dermatologist that I had 100% success with (kelly@technologyunderstood.net). Avoid this dermatologist! I will also be continuing to post this on social media so someone else doesn't go thru what I have. p.s. this place is a scam as they try to make you come in multiple times to fix an easy problem so the office can make more profit off of the dr visits. read more

I was in for a VI peel today with Betsy. I DID NOT get a VI peel. She washed my face and applied one quick swipe of something? I have had MANY VI peels and know the drill. There was no alcohol cleanse before applying and only one coat of something that was mostly likely TCA? I was out the door in literally 10 min from the time I entered the room until check out. Normally the skin is tight, slightly yellow and sensitive post peel. This was not. After washing my face and applying the night time wipe, which usually burns/tingles, there was nothing. I am very upset that I did not get the service I booked and it was not worth the $$$$. I would never recommend Betsy at Pena for a VI peel. I feel ripped off. read more

Stay away! This office is horribly managed. I'm not sure why I kept going back for as long as I did, but I'm done. Never mind the usual 30-50 minute wait times, which is fairly typical for most doctors' offices these days, but this office manages to be consistently behind, even right after they open, as explained below. 1) This office opens at 7 a.m. I once scheduled a 7:15 a.m. appointment in order to get in and out and (falsely) figuring if I went that early I could get seen and on my way to work in downtown Nashville at a decent time. How silly of me. I checked in at 7:15 and didn't get called back until 8:03. I asked both the receptionist while waiting and the provider during the appointment how they could get THAT behind having only been open 15 minutes! I will say that got them moving and they did apologize, but this incident just showed their typical disorganization. 2) Recently, I had a 9:30 a.m. appointment. I waited the usual 35 minutes, and got up to ask the receptionist about the wait status. I was then told that someone with a 10:30 a.m. appointment had been called in before me, and not only would I have to wait for this person who had bumped me to be seen, but there also was another lady ahead of me. The wait times here are bad enough; bumping me for someone with an appointment later than me is unacceptable! What a contempt shown for patients who show up to their appointment on time! I don't know about other patients, but I didn't have the time to wait for what would've likely been an hour and a half (at least) or more. I walked out, with the promise that one of their office managers, Vanna, would call me once she got in for the day. Surprise, surprise, I never heard from her or anyone else trying to resolve or at least acknowledge today's situation. I've already called a Vanderbilt dermatologist, and will never step foot in Skin Solutions again. 3) The actual provider care I've received has been frustrating more often than not. The one I had mainly seen, JoEllyn, a physician's assistant, is a nice enough person, but has confused the purposes of my medications more than once, and I've had to explain to her why I take the ones that she has prescribed for me! She also once gave me a TB test, which results in a little blood blister forming. After administering that, she left the room, came in a few minutes later to draw blood, looked at the blood blister that had formed from the TB test she had given less than 5 minutes earlier and asked, "where did you get that blood blister from? I didn't see that before." I think even the nurse was in shock that JoEllyn could that quickly forget she had just given the TB test, and had to remind JoEllyn about the test she had given less than 5 minutes earlier. JoEllyn sort of laughed and passed it off, but yikes! That kind of forgetfulness or lack of focus or whatever you want to call it shot any confidence I had in her. When I had to discontinue use of a prescription and needed to start discussing a new course of treatment, I called and left her a message for further consultation. Three weeks later, after checking in with the nurses at the office a couple times who promised to get back to me with JoEllyn's next steps, I've still not heard back from her about that particular issue. To top it all off, my condition remains unsuccessfully treated after six months. There are a lot of dermatology offices around Cool Springs and Franklin. Skip this one! read more

She gives a diagnosis things that can be treated by her product line. Therefore she doesn't have to bill insurance and everything is cash in hand. With a history of skin cancer and multiple surgeries I expected her to discuss my history, not try to sell me rosacea treatments. She spent about 2 minutes with me and turfed me off to her assistant/nurse for a lecture about her product line. read more

Dr Pena is one of the worst experiences I have had with a doctor. I was a new patient and she came in with other doctors...did not ask or introduce. Quickly look at my problem areas with a lack of interest. One of them was a wart on my foot. Because I had to be on my feet the next day, I simply asked about the procedure and she snapped back...just use duct tape! I am not kidding. I was so mad when I left there .....Unbelievable. read more

I've been to both locations Franklin and Columbia. Both times I've had to have Mohs surgery. And on both visits I developed very bad infections. I really urge you not to visit these locations they are not clean or I would not have developed infections. I will never go back again and I will encourage others not to also. Since this time I have had all my surgery done at Vanderbilt and absolutely no problems at all. read more

Let me begin by saying I never had issues with acne in my teen years and only began experiencing worsening skin and more and more pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads in my early and mid 20s. I went to Skin Solutions in Columbia after having previously gone to two other dermatologists who could not help me. Kelsey Mauro was my physician and immediately put me on two topical treatments, one Clindamycin and one Adapalene. She told me to be patient and give it a couple of months and while I did see almost immediate improvements, after those first two months I was truly amazed at how quickly and easily my skin had cleared up. I would recommend them to anyone experiencing acne issues and while I have near perfectly clear skin now and haven't had a breakout in months I will absolutely be going back to them should I experience any more skin issues. read more

Appointment for a list of issues. Eczema on hand and feet. Scalp issues (wasn't sure wanted consult), a spot on my back, and a spot on my head. Came 30 minutes early and after paperwork was seen almost immediately. Nurse told me I couldn't be seen for more than one issue. Told them that is not was I was informed when scheduling. She proceeded to tell me it was due to the insurance company not accepting claims for more than one issue. I said that doesn't sound right, she proceeded to take my information and send the doctor in. Doctor looked at the spot on my back and as I told her about the spot on my head, she also proceeded to say let's focus on the spots today for biopsy and schedule another appointment for eczema. Doctor left and Nurse numbed me up. Doctor returned to do the biopsy. The one on my head bled profusely so they had trouble especially with stitching because they didn't pull my hair back and it was the same color as my hair. After finishing my head, she left again so the nurse could clean me up before she finished the back. They had such a hard time with my head, I had to get a head wrap. I'm very concerned the doctor was so rushed she didn't want to exam me fully as a new patient. She just agreed with me the spot on my head was an issue and needed to be biopsied with what seemed to be no examination. Simply because I said another doctor recommended I see a medical dermatologist for it. Even the nurse said I should come back for a full body examination. The other issue I have is the work they did on my head. I managed to pull all the strands of hair out but the stitch is not the best job. I'm afraid of infection and the scar after. I'm scheduling with another doctor to see about my eczema or other issues. They seem to want to collect on office visit fees by separating out the issues because my insurance confirmed they do not care about the amount of issues discussed per visit. read more

I had had recurring facial rash and bumps for about 3 years. On June 22, 2017, I saw Dr. Julie Pena for the first time for second opinions at the Franklin Clinic of the Skin Solutions Dermatology. After examining my face and briefly asking me about the history of my facial rash and bumps, Dr. Julie Pena said there were two different things on my face; one was acne, and the other was allergy and I should see an allergist to figure out what I was allergic to. Then suddenly, she asked me, "Did you do biopsy before?" I said, "No, I didn't do biopsy". She said, "We will do biopsy." I asked, "Will this leave a scar on my face?" She acted very inpatient and did not answer my question. Then she spoke very quickly and softly, "It is 3 millimeter..." I didn't hear the latter part of what she said. I was confused and did not understand what she said. She then asked me to lie down. I thought she was going to further examine my face. I was lying there and waiting for her to explain more about the biopsy to me. Then I felt a sting on my face (now I know it was the needle sticking into my face for local anesthesia), after that my face didn't feel anything and I just saw Dr. Julie Pena's hands were doing something on my face. It only took a few minutes, then Dr. Julie Pena asked me to sit up, then I looked at myself in the mirror and saw there were stitches and blood on my left front cheek (about 1.5 cm left to my nose). At that moment, I started realizing what had happened to me. On my way from the clinic to my office, I couldn't help but think "Was this biopsy really necessary?" "Why did Dr. Julie Pena not explain this biopsy to me and not ask me if I wanted to have this biopsy?" A couple of days later, I saw the Summary of Visit and the Pathology Report of the biopsy on the Patient Portal of the Skin Solutions Dermatology. Under the In House Procedures section, it says "Excised Diameter : 3mm" and "Consent : All risks, benefits, and potential complications were discussed including bleeding, infection, scarring and the need for further surgery to improve the resultant scar or to remove a cancerous process." But Dr. Julie Pena did NOT practice this on me on my biopsy day. So Dr. Julie Pena knew what should be done, but she did NOT do it! Under the Clinical Data of the Pathology Report, it says "R/O ALLERGIC DERMATITIS VS SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS AND LESS LIKELY LUPUS". I did some research on my own and learned these 3 conditions are not commonly diagnosed by excision biopsy. On July 5, 2017, I went to the Nashville Clinic for suture removal. After Dr. Julie Pena removed the sutures on my face, I took out the printout of the Summary of Visit and pointed to the Consent section and said "You did not explain all these to me before performing the biopsy on my face, and you did not seek consent from me. There was no informed consent!" Dr. Julie Pena did not say anything. The nurse Ms. CB said, "It's here, you signed the consent form." And she moved an iPad to me on which it was a written "SURGICAL INFORMED CONSENT" for the punch excision biopsy on my left median cheek, and my signature was on it and the date was June 22, 2017, the day the biopsy was done on my face. Ms. CB also handed a laminated consent to me and said it was for patients to read prior to procedures. I stared at the SURGICAL INFORMED CONSENT and the laminated consent and was shocked. On the day of my skin biopsy, I was NEVER given the laminated consent to read, I was NEVER given this SURGICAL INFORMED CONSENT form to sign. Obviously, my signature on this written SURGICAL INFORMED CONSENT was FORGED! I turned to Dr. Julie Pena, she said she had to see another patient and would come back to me afterwards. About 15 minutes later, Dr. Julie Pena came back. I challenged her with the forged written consent form. She lied and said I signed the consent form on iPad on June 22, 2017 before the biopsy was done. But the fact is, on my biopsy day, Dr. Julie Pena and another nurse (her initial on the forged consent form was RD) NEVER showed me the laminated consent and the SURGICAL INFORMED CONSENT form. Dr. Julie Pena also lied and said it was very common to diagnose lupus by performing excision biopsy on face. This unconsented and unnecessary invasive punch excision biopsy has brought damage to my left cheek, and suffering and losses to my life. During the first 2 weeks after the biopsy, my daily life was severely affected by this procedure. I couldn't laugh because the wound would hurt; I had to have a bandage on my face to cover my wound in order to prevent infection; I didn't feel comfortable going out and letting people see my face; I had to cancel my activities. It has been eight months so far, and this punch excision biopsy has left a permanent scar on my face because it damaged the dermis, and the scar is especially obvious when I smile or laugh. And for anyone complaining about wait times, I'm pretty sure when you see a Dr. You want them to spend time listening to you. I came to Skin Solutions because I was concerned about a mole on my leg. I scheduled an appointment for a body scan and was brought back for my exam on time. When it was discovered that I had a possible melanoma on my leg, I was scheduled for surgery that afternoon. JoEllyn Dyson even stayed after hours to see to my needs after surgery. She was thorough and professional and explained all I needed to know for after care and what to expect next. She even gave my husband her personal cell phone number in case we had any questions. My husband sent her a picture of the incision site to ask a question, and she responded immediately. I have been back several times to the office to see JoEllyn and know that I am good hands. I have been very pleased with the treatment and care that I received. She is personable and takes interest in her patients, not just as a patient, but also as a friend!!! read more

There's so much to write, but I will try to be brief. I was an hour early for my appointment to give myself time to fill out my new patient information. I gave the administrative assistants my identification and military insurance card. They kept my cards until I was escorted to the back. It was then that the MA notified me and said I wouldn't be meeting with Doctor Pena only her student. I had an appointment last year where I was referred by my primary care doctor, but canceled due to preparing my husband and our family for his deployment. I then asked the MA wasn't I scheduled for the actual doctor then and she stated no. I then asked well when do I meet the actual doctor she looked at me puzzled and said she's busy with clients. I said okay. I then told her I was there about dry patch rashes, and that I want to talk to the student doctor about a hematoma underneath my skin which was suppose to be the original appointment last year. The MA stated that the "student doctor will only see you for what you scheduled the appointment for".I told her that I've never heard of such. And stated so I have to make another appointment just to notify the doctor of other ailments that I am having.? That's sounds like you just want my money. Then the MA began asking me about the questions which were in fact the exact same questions on the questionnaire that I filled out an hour ago. I asked her why is she asking the same questions? And what's the point of the medical history forms if you are going to ask the same questions? This visit was an entire waste of time and money for me. The student doctor was wonderful. She actually answered my questions about the hematoma. She also prescribed a cream for my skin that I was familiar with using. By the time I had came in to see the student doctor my rashes had cleared up. The doctor left and the MA asked what pharmacy would I prefer the prescription sent too. I gave her the address and phone number. A week later no call from Walgreens. I contacted them and they stated that they had NO prescriptions for me. Hmmmmm. I called and emailed through he patients portal of Dr. Pena's office Skin Solutions and no one responded to my email. The administrative assistant had me in the system by my maiden name with an address that I didn't give them including an old number. And stated I will have he nurse contact u back and it maybe later because they are very busy. I was frustrated, but politely said I will not be RETURNING. So where did my paperwork go????? I am nervous that they didn't put my paperwork in a file and now someone may have my personal information. Also at the time I left that day the young lady at the desk stated that she couldn't verify my insurance, but I'm sure it works. What? I told her to contact Tricare South and she did and I didn't leave until it was verified. She kept trying to get me out of the door. To sum it up the office looks nice and modern and everyone is running around the office like they know what their doing. If you have time to waste and money then this office may be the right dermatology clinic for you. I was disgusted at the lack of training and how the young lady came into the examining room to get my insurance card again like I didn't have valid insurance, I felt that this was very unprofessional.
