Used to be good. Not so much anymore. I've been going to and taking people to this restaurant since it's inception as a little hole in the wall in Riverside. Charming place, great food, prices reasonable. Have been many times, used them for staff Christmas parties and taken many out of town guests. Always good experiences, until maybe a year or so ago. Don't know if ownership has changed, but things feel different. First, about a year ago, took guests there for a meal as they were driving through town just before Christmas. We talked the place up, and these folks were from southern US, so they know bbq. They were polite, but clearly underwhelmed. I had never had such a bad meal there, from brisket over half fat, to rubber band chewy ribs, to some wings that were so cold, dried out as to be undercooked. When the server saw about three quarters of our meal uneaten at checkout, she asked if everything was ok, we said not really, listed some deficiencies, to which she replied "no one else is complaining, maybe you don't know what good bbq is." Paid our $250 tab, and thought, must be a one-off, or hoped it was. Several visits since then, each worse than before, all with similar problems, though sevice usually was very good. Seemed like prices were increasing quickly, but lots of factors affecting that. Then, recently we placed a takeout order worth several hundred dollars. Food was better, but when my assistant gave me the receipt, I noticed the 15% service charge. Hadn't been mentioned when ordering. Called, and was told it's automatic on pickup orders. I'm familiar with these charges, and know they do not equate to a gratuity, so staff don't get a piece; our usual gratuity was still given. I take issue with the automatic charge, sneaking it in, and not being able to negotiate, or at least anticipate it. Seems to be a common cycle when some businesses grow, that greed grows too, attention to detail and quality decline, and we end up here. Sad. The staff will suffer for the management's misdeeds. read more

The flavours were wonderful and the meats were delicious. There is a good variety of tasty sauces to check out! However I have been disappointed with their ribs from time to time as the bone to meat ratio can swing drastically. The sides are all yummy and worth tasting. The restaurant has been clean and tidy at every visit and the staff are friendly and cheerful. I would recommend this as a place to try while in Medicine Hat. read more

Very nice servers - super friendly and helpful! Unfortunately the food wasn't very good. Everything came out cold. The St. Louis style ribs needed a chainsaw to get through them (my husband bent his fork trying to cut through them) - very sinewy and super tough. Probably the worst we've tried. We've had a lot of good smokehouse and BBQ throughout North America but this just didn't cut it (pardon the pun). We won't be back. read more

Cool little smokehouse place in the Hat. Right across the street was residential homes- they must get hungry for BBQ all day long! It had real wood picnic table like seating, a plethora of special sauces, and thank goodness full rolls of paper towel. Their original sauce is amazing! Our family was instantly interested in the sandwiches and that is primarily what we ordered including the manwich, and the porkzilla. Both were very well liked and we recommend them for sure. Otherwise we did order the 3 meats and 3 sides tray option and were able to try the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. Delightful! But the sides stood out the most to us- we loved the Mac n cheese, the potato salad with its curry bite, the really tasty simple coleslaw, and the baked beans of tasty goodness. Each meal came with this cool almost pickled cucumber salad which some of our family wasn't that fond of but it a nice bit of green next to all the protein. Side note: no coffee is served here. But they did have fridge of soda drinks and bottled water. Serving our meals in styrofoam definitely gives the air that this place is a to-go kind of place we kind of wished they had more environmentally friendly containers to send us home with as once we finished eating they went straight into the garbage. All in all fun decor, tasty food, and really good side dishes it was worth the stop. read more

The food was amazing!!! Our waitress was amazing but the management was awful! He kicked us out after we spent money on food and drinks and a bottle of wine because a hockey team was coming in. The place is NOT packed and the team wouldn't have even noticed our presence yet we got booted to the lounge area. My friend talked to the manager and all he could do was look at the waitress and blame her. I was disappointed by his behavior and lack of ownership. Once again the food and the waitress was amazing! Also the hockey team was only here for 20min-30min. If you have paying patrons who are spending money on the experience and enjoyment of being out don't give them the boot immediately. read more

This place does not disappoint!! I'm eating with a couple buddies and this food is great. How should we describe this food? Well, how about fantastic, excellent, delicious and meaty! The sides are super also! I've had my fare share of baked beans but these truly are the greatest beans I've had in a long time. You pick 2 or 3 meats and then 2 or 3 sides depending on how many meats you choose. The meats of choice are beef brisket, chicken, pulled pork, ribs or pork sausages. The sides were potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, mushed potatoes or Caesar salad. They were already out of mashed and Cesar salad when we got there. There's a "Skinny's coffee Sauce" that is really good, dip your meats and bun and your fingers in this stuff! It's good!! NOM NOM - TIME PASSES - NOM We all got through the mountain of meats. Unbelievably delicious! I ordered the Taco Salad thinking it would be smaller than some of the other meals. Was I ever surprised when it arrived on a tray. It was almost the same size as the tray! Hands down best BBQ food I have had ever. Ive been to over 30+ BBQ restaurants over Canada and the USA and this one has beat them all. I got the 3 meat diner. The brisket was phenomenal, such a great cut of meat with a nice cap of fat on it. Tasted just like candy and the meat was super tender. The ribs were excellent with a very good rub. Pulled pork was awesome as well, great seasoning and cooked to perfection. The brisket and pulled pork were so good i had to order another pound of each to go so I could have it again over the next couple days. Even the sides were unreal. Large open style restaurant. They have large booths. It is a ribs place. Casual ambience. Portions are quite large and an assortment of side dishes. They have TV screens. They have an excellent selection of beers that are available during happy hour. It could have just been the Monday we were in, but the pulled pork and brisket were very dry. this is a tremendous local BBQ smokehouse in Medicine Hat and I highly recommend dining here. Great BBQ - the baked beans are out of this world! I'm a brisket fan and Skinny' s did not disappoint. The staff and food are amazing. The beef brisket was one of the best I've had. The ribs and corn bread are A+ as well.

Excellent. Best ribs I have ever had. You get lots of food and they have an excellent selection of sides. There is also a nice selection of local craft beers. Our waitress provided excellent service and had great knowledge of the city. Only disappointment was they no longer have the pig symbol. They should bring that back. I'm in Medicine Hat for business and Skinny's was recommended to me by a coworker. I didn't feel like going out so I ordered in. I got the ranchy bird sandwich and it was really tasty! The bun was soft, the bbq sauce was zippy and the chicken was very smokey and flavourful. I don't know what any of the other food is like on the menu, but I will most likely order this sandwich from them the next time I come here. read more

We came into your restaurant on Saturday night . Your hostess was not honest on the wait time , if it was going to be an hour then a customer should be informed instead of 15 mins . I would have taken my children elsewhere . As my family was a person of colour we were not treated properly even poorly by your staff . First off we had been waiting for nearly 45 mins in your restaurant . A family of 5 came in with no reservations as I was listening and got seated right away unlike us who also did not have reservations but still were waiting. We were not told when we sat down that you were out of the Mac and cheese my child wanted. We placed our order and after waiting for 30 plus mins for our food to arrive I was told you were out of coleslaw also. Portion size was very small not sure if you were running out of food or what . Here is a hidden gem of Medicine Hat for sure! I was visiting family in the Brooks area and decided to drive into the hat to go for dinner and an escape room, found this place and decided to check it out. If you have ever been to Capitol X/K-days/ what ever it's called now lol this reminded me of the rib fest that happens at the exhibition. The quality and flavor was pretty on par as well. The prices were very reasonable my wife and I shared a 3 meat selection and ended up eating it for lunch the next day as well , so you can expect large portions. It seemed like majority of people were picking up large orders of assorted meats that were pre ordered. I also over heard they cater large events (400people) They did a great job with the vibe of the space being very vintage holding old school license plates, pictures , and quirky sayings. **DON'T MISS THIS TREAT FROM THE HAT!** We managed to get literally the last serving of the weekend, the place being sold out due to the Alberta Winter Games and Valentines Day on the same weekend. Every mouthful was worth it and the sides were every bit as good as the main dishes - corn bread, baked beans and potato salad - WOW! BBQ sauce made in house as is all of their smoked meat. Appalling service straight from "owner". Confusing menu options for Team platter options. Confused staff. Seem to be cherry picking what food is served different from what was communicated or advertised. Took an hour for any food with zero communication. Instead of apologizing the owner came and blasted us about "fighting over whether to get the team platter or not" as the reason why we had no food. Not the case whatsoever. Honestly he was so rude it made me lose my appetite and I didnt even try the food. Food presentation was not appealing whatsoever. We want to root for restaurants and small business but this is not one that is going to survive. Stay away. read more

Good place in an out of the way area of the Hat smoke chicken wings were awesome and the three option meal had huge amounts of food, beef brisket was tender and tasted really well maybe not the best I have had but right up there. The chicken was too dry for my liking but the rib let's made up for the chicken. The slaw and tater totes were really good and the backed beans had a nice taste to them.
