After touring the gyms I came away with the impression that Stafford was by far the best gym in the area. The staff is superb and the gym and equipment are clean. None of that terrible "gym" smell that you often get at the gyms as they age. They also do an excellent job at making sure there aren't so many members in the gym that there are long wait times to use the equipment.

Beginning during the end stages of COVID restrictions, it was so nice to experience outdoor swimming, the hot tub, and social time with other members. Swimming is my main experience at the club so here is what you should know: * Six lane outdoor salt water pool that is open year round (I've done laps in the snow, sleet, and hail). * You can reserve four of the six lanes and it is very competitive to get times, especially during the warm weather months when you are competing for space with the swim team, swim lessons, and aqua aerobics classes. * The other two lanes are left open for first come first serve usage and swimmers are encouraged to share. * The outdoor hot tub is for 14+ over. I have only taken one yoga class at the club and all classes have you reserve your spot. If you cancel less than 12 hours in advance or are a no show, you are charged a $10 fee. Personally, I don't mind since the reservation system makes me accountable and if I don't have a reservation, I'm less likely to go workout. The club is a nice mix of serious athletes (I'm surrounded by masters swimmers and triathletes), retirees, and families. Prior to my membership, my teenage son was a member for two years and loved the weight room, sauna, and steam room. The club as been open for awhile and is definitely showing its age and is need of some maintenance upgrades in the pool area. That being said, I have been very happy with my membership here and the personal feel, literally being greet by name when entering and exiting, and the wonderful customer service. This club is very different from the large national chains, so to each their own. Definitely recommend a trial membership at this club as well as others in the area to see which is the best fit for you. I finally had enough, and went on a search for a new facility. I had worked out at Golds years ago and liked them, so I googled and found this place. Wow, what a great facility! They have every machine you could want, and more. The place is spotless, smells good and isn't overly crowded. It's also a new concept Gold's Gym. So it seems very modern and up to date. The staff are really friendly and helpful. And the members seems to respect the quality and cleanliness of the gym. Parking is also easy and plentiful. And its in a nice new business park. Ive spent most of my adult life in gyms, and id say this is probably the best gym Ive ever worked out at.

The good: The gym staff here is absolutely wonderful; they greet everyone by name and are always…read moreready to help if the need arises. There's a nice selection of machines and a sauna that is open to all membership levels, with the higher tiers of membership also having access to red light therapy as well as tanning. The bad: The owner cuts corners to save money, a lot. This location has no classes and the membership is still as expensive as other Gold's locations that do offer classes. The women's lockers have a mix of old and new locks since they only replace them when fully broken, with all of the older locks being very finicky and often locking you out even when you use the code you set it with. This is especially frustrating since there is only 5 of the new locks to go around and you can only have the locker unlocked by staff if a manager is working. There's also an issue with upkeep on the machines with some showing their age/use via holes worn in the bench and others just not being cleaned properly. In particular cleanliness wise, I have found gum in cupholders that stayed there for two weeks before being cleaned and there is thick dust on both the white treadmill rails and inside of the fan vents on the same treadmills. This cleaning issue extends to the sauna where under the benches is rarely cleaned and around the vents are visibility dirty. If you are sensitive to dust or have a dust allergy, it is important to note they also do not regularly clean the pipes and vents on the ceiling, I have been going over a year and never seen it cleaned, so there is quite a bit of dust built up in the facility. I think a lot of the issues with cleanliness could be easily solved with more frequent deep cleanings and more cleaning staff in general. Right now they only have two {extremely kind and hard working} cleaners to my knowledge and it's just too much to expect them to be able to handle all of the machines, amenities, and deep cleaning tasks on their own. This all comes back to the owners looking to save vs investing in the gym. Unfortunately, it's a choice that shows with all of the above mentioned as well as in week long waits when the sauna breaks and lights that will blink and take weeks to fix. I continue to go because the staff is great and the sauna is enough to keep my patronage, but they could really benefit from a renovation that focuses on replacing and upgrading the equipment and amenities. I've seen a good chunk of people who I met here leave for Murray's because every one of them has said how much worse the gym is from when they signed up, and a year in I do have to agree that the basic care and maintenance isn't keeping up with what this location needs.

The classes are small, it's not a "gym" with tv, lockers and roid heads or dudes trying to look at your butt (not mine). It's a group of folks dedicated to their health, the longevity, the long game is the heart of it. Exercise is not a fad, you do it and then you are done. This is what The House is great at. They are looking for you to learn the reasons you do it, how to pace it, how to develop, track and grow. Concrete example, in March, they had us test 1 perfect rep at the heaviest weight. If I can do a deadlift with 50lbs, that becomes my max. Now when I am working out and the rep 4-6x at 50% of max, I know I am working out with 25lbs. Now I have a goal to increase, and keep building. Education is an important component, not just lifting. As a woman, I never feel uncomfortable in this environment. 3 classes per week = 12x per month at $155? You cannot find a better deal in the Portland area.

The downsides to this gym, in my opinion, are the lack of certain equipment including the smith machines, the chest fly machine, and the benches in the free weights area. Depending on the time of day, this gym can become quite busy and it can be tough to fit in all of the exercises I would like due to the volume. Nonetheless, I would still recommend this gym if you are looking for a basic gym at a cheaper rate. It is still one of the better options for the price point it currently sits at with membership prices.
