We've been coming here for a couple years now since we moved to the peninsula and it's been a great experience. Like any tree farm, come early because all the good trees are gonna get taken right after Thanksgiving. Definitely wear good walking shoes because a lot of the best trees are uphill and require walking on a path of roots and tree branches. My toddler struggles a little bit with the paths to get up to the trees in the "best trees" part of the lot (I don't know if it's actually the best place to find trees or that's just what their sign says, but that that's always the area that we go to to grab a tree). Note that they only take cash and trees are around $80. Be prepared because there's no cell phone service and if you do forget cash you'll have to drive back about 20 minutes to get some (might be speaking from experience there...). read more

The most beautiful trees that last FOREVER. I put my tree up the day after Thanksgiving and, granted it guzzles 3 gallons of water in as many days, but they consistently last well into the new year. As long as you water these trees, they will last beautifully! The people are really nice and we make a tailgating event of tree finding ("treegating") with our neighbors. Another great year. Too bad 2023 trees were not that great imo, but still a fun time. It had rained the night before so it was super muddy! More people seem to know about this place, but it is so big that you can literally wonder off on your own. They provide a saw, but you can certainly bring your own chain saw to make things easier if it is hard for you. Don't forget the further you hike in to grab your tree, you need to hike your tree back out! They have twine and net for $5 to make things easier for the travel home. They also have freshly made wreaths when you pay! Love my yearly tradition here and I will continue to come here year after year! read more

Our neighbors raved about Skyline Ranch Tree farm. So the next weekend we drove up the winding hills of skyline on a lovely mild weathered day. The views and majestic redwood trees were a prelude to our adventure. When we arrived at the gate a person in a booth handed us a cutting saw and told us to park ahead and hike around and cut our own tree, One price for any tree . The tree farm asks customers to cut two branches up from the bottom so that a new tree can grow. It's a very good thing .. The cutting saw was easy to use and we brought home a beautiful tree we easily put in our back seat when we put the chairs down. This is a family tradition you should add to yours. You drive up, get handed a saw, you find your tree, cut it down and pay on the way out. This should take you from one to about 2 hours. I've seen people bring snacks and drinks and make a morning of it. I suggest you bring glove and patience. The people that work here are really nice and it's a great experience. It does not come with recognition, or appreciation for our business of buying trees from them but it does come with value. every years tree gets a slice off the bottom and placed in a Ziplock bag filled with the other 36 stumps! we typically write the year of that tree with a sharpie and call it a great year again! here's to another 37 years! If you haven't tried cutting your own Christmas trees, you know like in every Hallmark Christmas movie, this is a really fun place to start. The properly is a decent size and you won't need to deal with crowds, just friendly families on the hunt for the perfect tree. Some even bring their chairs and make a little picnic of the event. You'll get a reliable saw at entry and there's twine if you didn't bring your own rope/straps. For $80 this year (2023), I thought it was a fair price. Our tree has remained fresh right through New Years eve and could easily make it much longer for those like myself having a difficult time letting go of the season . My family and I have been going to cut down our Christmas trees at Skyline Ranch ever since I can remember. It has always been a tradition to get up early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, make some hot cocoa, get all bundled up, and drive out to Skyline Ranch on the twisty roads of Highway 35 listening to Christmas carols the whole way. When you arrive, you are greeted warmly (this is a family owned and operated business since 1958) and given a saw and directions about where to park and how many branches to leave on the stump when you saw down your tree. Then you can have at it!! There are many acres of trees, and it is up to you to pick your perfect jem for the year. The price this year (2009) was $55 for one tree. We came on a Thursday, when it wasn't busy and others were closed. The guy at the gate, was so sweet, fun and knowledgeable about the trees. We got what we wanted, he offered to take our picture on our way out the door. The tree price is the same as it has been for the last couple of years. As luck would have it, one of the family members lost a wallet. They sent their employees scouring over the tree farm, looking for the wallet. Turns out, the wallet was lost at home. Embarrassment. They still wished us a Merry Christmas. This sounds minor, but it reflects on who they are: they care about the trees, they're nicely trimmed. They care about the families who purchase the trees and we care about them: we hope that in this crazy Bay Area that a family farm who cares can be in business next year and the following years. We had a wonderful experience at the Skyline Ranch Christmas Tree Farm on  the afternoon of Nov 30.  While the selection of Monterey Pines was a little sparse we did find the perfect tree for our high ceiling house. However  we were having trouble trying to cut it down. The very nice attendant on duty noticed our plight and came to our assistance, finishing the cutting for us and helping load it into our car. so first off, a disclaimer: I didn't actually buy a tree here. I'm writing a review because I was curious about several things and none of the other reviews addressed them. I went hiking at the park nearby and stopped at this place on the way back. This year it's $60 for a tree, regardless of size, tax included. There are entrances on both side of the road. It's a little hut with a guy there, and they have a rack full of saws you can use (I wasn't sure if you had to bring your own or not). I believe they did have tree-netting things, and probably rope/twine to tie to the roof of your car as well, though I can't remember if it was at the entrance or exit. There were quite a few people here, probably over a hundred cars; it almost seemed like people were tailgating it like a football game. I saw a family with some chairs parked out and kids throwing a football around. That said, it's pretty spread out (almost a mile from the entrance to the exit) so it didn't feel crowded at all. The trees themselves were interesting - I'd never been to a tree farm before. It's basically a giant shrub/root ball low to the ground, then the actual "tree" you cut grows on a trunk sprouting from that. So you saw off the top part, leave the root cluster in tact, then presumably a new tree will just sprout from that in the same place. It looked like some of these had been growing for 50 years (the sign says it opened in 1958, so it's possible). I always assumed Christmas trees were just normal pine trees that you chop down, then it kills the tree and you need to plant a new one, so it was cool to see they essentially just regenerate themselves without having to start from scratch. Seemed like a nice place, I'll probably come here for future trees. Expensive if you're getting a small tree, but probably worth it in my opinion for the fun of going out there and cutting it down yourself. read more

Since it is a pretty long drive from SF, I called their number which had a recording cheerfully announcing their opening hours. When we went there, we were told that they had sold out--and not just today. The fellow suggested we visit one of their other farms, way south in the Santa Cruz mountains. I don't know whether it really was "bait and switch" or just laziness in not updating the voice mail, but either way, it stinks. read more

Nice people. It a tradition of ours to go with families and friends every year. So we have cut trees there for the past 10 years. Trees are getting thin--fewer and fewer choices of 8 and 9 foot trees. When they tell you 'go left for he best trees' ask them how far --3 hills to choose from. Bring tape measure and your own saw -- saws are dull. They'll need to become more competitive. Cost keeps rising every years. 10 years ago, it was $25. Home Depot for what it's worth is $25. We recently found this tree farm, due to our favorite tree farm being closed on a weekday. We found a beautiful 10' tree for $68. The experience though is what we always look for! Not only does Skyline Ranch have a great selection of cut your own renewable trees (multiple sizes and varieties), but the people that run it are good Samaritans, too. When our oil light came on in our vehicle after we had loaded on our tree and we discovered not a drop oil on the dipstick, the owner made a special trip to another location to see if he might have some oil for us. He not only filled our reservoir, but would take no money. Everyone we dealt with there was gracious and friendly. When you enter, if you ask, they will tell you where you will find the best trees. we have come here for over 20 years for our tree party with friends. we host lunch and coffee and cocoa. tables and chairs and lots of catching up. people who were 2 when we started are now returning with their own 2 yr olds. so fun tradition. we come from san jose. it is difficult for the new attendees to find it. i now see that there is an actual address they can google. 80 acres of 3 types of trees. if you have a big house, or a church to buy for, this is the place. if you are buying a short tree for grandma's table, then you'd pay less somewhere else. last year they were $55, any size. if we bought one at home depot they are maybe $10 less for the size we get. 2 spots for outhouses, could use more. you do not have to buy a tree to enter and exit. i find they direct you to an area they needs to be thinned.. so you can decide where is best..after coming for so many years we have wanted to work out a deal with the owners, like : 1/3 of our cost could go to a non profit. but it feels like they would not be interested. they do a big business. every year we hear that it is the last yr. popular rumor. this year we were rained out. read more

We've never had a problem with our tree, but we do know they are still in nature and not on some lot. Make sure you rinse it off before you bring it inside. The people are always friendly. As a long-time customer of Skyline Ranch (my family has been buying trees there since the 1960s), I would like to give them the highest recommendation. I, too,was there late in the season one year to find they are no longer selling "cut your own" trees because they do not want to overcut the ranch. They do offer precut trees, though, that you can purchase. I've always known them to be open at least the first three weekends after Thanksgiving, so go early. I have always been extremely satisfied with the Christmas trees I get here. I put the tree right into water when I get home and have often kept it up until March (!). read more
