We loved Skytop Lodge when my folks had a house here. There's lots to do. Fun activities for the family, hiking, swimming, ice skating, hayrides, etc. We are now back with our college age kids for a long weekend; we are staying at the Lodge. Rooms are spacious. Our bathroom is small, but every room seems to have a different bathroom layout. We were upgraded to a junior suite. It's very nice.
Brunch this morning was great! Lots of choices. Good food. Definitely worth the $15/person.
My only complaint: Last night we had dinner in the Tap Room. Nice atmosphere. (It's changed since the last time we were here. No more booths where we could carve our initials.) But the food and service were subpar. Part of the problem was our waiter.
I asked for an unsweetened iced tea, no lemon. It came with lemon.
The mac n cheese with kielbasa had no flavor...except for the kielbasa.
My nachos were cold. Lots of chips and pico, but I had a hard time finding the meat and cheese. What cheese I did have had hardened because the nachos got cold. I flagged down the waiter and told him to take it away. He offered to have another order of nachos made, but I declined. He made no other offer of food/entree.
My son is allergic to raw carrots. Therefore, he asked not to have them on his salad. The salad came with carrots. When we told the waiter he said he'd get another salad for my son. Then he offered me my son's salad with the carrots. I declined, but then realized it was going to be thrown away, so I took it. No offer of a dressing. I ate it dry. It was at this time that I asked for a cup of mushroom soup. I ate half of it. I didn't like the thyme in it. (My son, who has a bachelors degree in culinary, tasted the soup. He said it was good. I guess it just depends on if you like thyme in your soup. Never had it in mushroom soup. Oh well.)
Our waiter was friendly, but didn't seem to really care about us or our needs. He didn't ask if we liked our food, or needed refills. He seemed phony. (Sorry, Christian. That's how you came off.) We had to flag him down about the food and refills.
My breaking point was when I asked for a refill on my "unsweetened iced tea, no lemon." Christian asked if I wanted it to go. Yes! Great! What did I get? A to-go cup with unsweetened iced tea AND LEMON. I know I surprised him when I pushed the cup away and said something like, "Unbelievable. I asked for unsweetened iced tea, NO LEMON." He apologized and went to get me another. When he brought it back, I left it on the table. For all I know, he opened the lid and fished out the lemon with his finger. I know, sounds terrible that I am saying that, but it's the truth. I had no confidence in this waiter by this point.
Approximately $100 later (including tip) my family of 4 left the Tap Room. (We were not charged for the nachos.) What a waste...
Tonight is dinner in the Lodge dining room. Hope it's as good as the brunch this morning.
UPDATE: Dinner in the Lodge dining room was better than the night before. It was not crowded at all. The food was good. However, we were told we'd have two waitresses. We only had one. We saw the 2nd one only when she presented the bill. Service was ok, not great. My husband asked for a refill on his drink 2-3 times; he never got it. And our drink orders weren't taken until we placed our order - about 15 minutes after we were seated. Then the drinks weren't brought to the table until our first course was brought out. We found the waiter from the night before and the waitress this night to be indifferent to our needs. Very sad for all the money we spent.
Our breakfasts were great. Service those two morning was wonderful. Both waiters, Sergei and (I believe his name was ) Craig (thin, glasses), were attentive and friendly.
Back to our Tap Room waiter...I saw him a few times after our Tap Room experience. I tried to make brief conversation with him the first time and he just looked at me and walked by. (And yes, he saw me. Looked right at me.) The 2nd time we both looked at each other and didn't say a word. But then we checked out and needed a bell boy to take our luggage down. He was the bell boy. Talkative, friendly, wanting to know if we had excellent service...and clearly looking for a large tip. I had his number down and gave him the cold shoulder. To the manager who told my husband that this particular young man had worked over 100 hours since Christmas...I don't care. It does not excuse his behavior or the service we received.
Overall, we love Skytop. The accommodations in the Lodge were wonderful. (And the Christmas decorations were gorgeous!) Gift shop, flower shop and tea room employees were friendly and nice. So were the front desk employees. I recommend the breakfasts. But next time we'll eat out for dinner; those meals at the Lodge were not worth the money we spent. read more
