Stopped in for the restaurant. Brunch sounded really good. Not busy at all this Sunday morning. Got a really nice table by the front windows. Grabbed the mushrooms and polenta to start. Lightly breaded and fried. Yummy. Did need salt but otherwise well made. Main was their burger. So good! Juicy and flavorful. The onion jam was delicious. Their wine selection is very good. Get the flight. It's a really good deal and you can try 3 different wines. Service was quick and food came out fast and hot. Exactly the quirky, upscale hotel we enjoy. Squeaky floors (not noticeable while sleeping), early to mid-2000s architecture and decor, and wonderful service. The grounds were exceptional (lovely riverfront hikes) and they and the hotel were very dog-friendly, with bowls, a toy, and dog biscuits in our room when we arrived. Kevin at the front desk couldn't have been more helpful or kind and the lady at the desk in the morning--unfortunately we never got her name--was equally gracious. I'd mistakenly booked a week before we were actually visiting and Kevin called me about 9 to see when we were arriving and helped me rebook for the correct nights. The on-site restaurant was five stars, too, both for breakfast and dinner. Well worth the trip off our direct route. If we're ever in the area again, we'll definitely return. One warning--upstairs rooms appeared to be accessible only by steep stairs, so if you have disabilities, be forewarned. read more

Overpriced, very small room. Very very small TV. Actually, had to wear my glasses. Dirty shower. Very noisy parking lot. No carpets to muffle shoes in hallway. We arrived 5pm Fri left 9am Sun. $600. Many added fees including a $70. Resort fee. We did get a $150 credit at Glass. But still paid add'l $125 and we had no alcohol. The steak was underwhelming. The small plates (for sharing) just kept adding up since we don't have the same tastes. There were so many leaks in the ceiling when it poured and all thru dinner people had to either move tables or be transferred inside. No apologies from staff who acted like this was normal. It was our anniversary and we made the best of it but will not return. read more

The Settlers Inn is a historic Arts & Craft Lodge that was built in Hawley, Pennsylvania in 1927. It was founded by local citizens in Hawley. Shortly after the completion of Lake Wallenpaupack (a man-made lake), local businessmen believed that tourists would come to see it and they raised funds to build a grand hotel known as the 'Hawley Community Hotel'. When the building was nearly finished, the stock market crashed and it sat empty for 20 years. It officially opened to the public in 1947 and went through several owners. It served as a nursing home, an inn, and even a private school. Since 1980, the inn has been owned and operated by hospitality experts Jeanne and Grant Genzlinger who dubbed it 'The Settlers Inn'. The on-site restaurant and Chestnut Tavern offer farm-to-table menus highlighting quality products of local farms and purveyors. Kate Woehrle is the current executive chef. The inn has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2010. My family and I recently visited The Settlers Inn while we were spending Memorial Day weekend in the Poconos. The timing of our visit coincided with their Memorial Day Brunch. The beautiful hotel had a spacious dining room that even featured live music from a piano player. To drink, I ordered the "Settlers Inn Bloody Mary" (blue cheese olives, alpine beef stick, aged cheddar, dilly beans, pepperoncini, celery). This was a great brunch cocktail! Our server brought us some delicious complimentary Brewer's Bread for the table. For the appetizer course, I had the "Smoked Trout Dip" and my wife had the "Black Pepper Ricotta Toast" (asparagus, cured egg yolk). We were both happy with our choices. For the entree course, I had the "Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict" (potato pancakes), my wife had the "Crispy Chicken Sammy" (coleslaw, brioche, roasted jalapeño aioli), and our son had the "Birthday Cake French Toast". Everything was excellent and tasted so fresh! For dessert, our server told us to help ourselves to the dessert table which featured fresh baked goods like cookies and cannoli. This inn is so cozy and cute! Love the small bar and comfy seating around the huge fireplace. The rooms are a little dated (carpets and chairs could use an update), but spacious and meets basic needs. Our room #206 had a gas fireplace, king size bed, and jacuzzi tub for two. Breakfast was included in our stay. Total cost was about $300 a night for a Saturday night in early April. Wish they had the option for tea in the room instead of just coffee, but that's my only complaint. We didn't get a chance to have dinner at the inn's restaurant, but we enjoyed excellent cocktails at the bar later that evening while listening to live piano music. There are also cocktail and wine tastings nearly every evening, though we didn't have a chance to try (we were visiting family). Highly recommend staying for a few days and enjoying all the lovely amenities. read more

The Settlers Inn was a disappointment for our December family birthday brunch. We made reservations in advance and chose the 11:30am time slot for brunch. When we arrived, at 11:24am the staff was still breaking down from breakfast ( totally understandable). We were not greeted by any staff member, even as I stood at the hostess stand. The gentleman behind the front desk did approach and was very friendly and welcoming. He informed us that breakfast was "very" busy and it would be a few minutes until our table was ready, once again no problem. Our family sat at the fireplace for 10 minutes and I once again went over to the hostess stand where no one was available, again the gentleman at the front counter was the only one around and said it should be soon. At that time a woman ( hostess) walked out and began to speak with the gentleman at the front desk. Finally, he said your table is here and ready, she responded "I know they saw me". She then proceeded to come over and say " Are you ready yet?", now mind you we had been waiting for 20minutes. She was not personable and was very crude, at that point she sat us in the dining room and commented to my younger daughter, " what you keep looking at the menu, you must want your food ." Her tone and approach was extremely rude and ignorant, still we did not say a thing wanting to have a pleasant experience and birthday brunch. Our server was good, no issues with her at all. The drinks were good but the food was not. My daughters pancakes came out last, one set of pancakes were almost raw and the others were burnt, once again not wanting to cause a scene they ate what was edible. During this time not one thing was mentioned about the birthday(s) we were celebrating, mind you when the reservations were made and at the hostess stand it was stated oh this is for birthday(s). I have never written a review in my life. My husband and I have 40 years plus experience in the restaurant and hospitality business and we are very understanding. I called The Settlers Inn on December 7th at 8:38pm and left a message for a manager to please call me back at their convenience, it is now December 12th and I received no call back, so I wrote this review. Unfortunately, we can no longer recommend The Settlers Inn to anyone within our business(s) or community. read more

Went for anniversary dinner. Wait staff could not have been nicer nor more helpful with menu selections. First a few chef offerings which set an anticipation. They Appetizers were chef specials with farm to table selections and good. Skate was nice, filet mignon a bit pricey but very good and lastly the server suggested plum cake with caramel and whip cream. Really great ending to the meal. Will be going again. Overall stay was good. Kinda wish I didn't get the room I got. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean. The staff was very pleasant and nice. It's the only reason I give it a 4 star review. The dinner just failed I don't know if I'm judging on a finer dining scale or just casual. The food lacked seasoning salt and black pepper. The amuse Bouche was ok lacked acid. The poutine was the best dish I had but also lacked salt and black pepper. I ordered the meat loaf the whole dish in itself was just blah In the flavor department. The mushroom Demi glaze had no umami flavor. The veg was so uninspired they didn't even peel the carrot. I attended a wedding at Settler's Inn and was blown away by the gardens. Such a beautiful setting outside. The food was amazing. The only downfall was that I asked for change at the open bar downstairs and it seemed like they thought I'd "forgotten" about it. Classy, quaint, and country feel!!! Love that I found this place when I decided to visit the Poconos and found Hawley! Room 301 was so spacious! The bathroom shower was so large and new. The garden is beautiful. The breakfast was delicious and I included with the room. The hotel has the free bikes for use. Great way to explore the town and surrounding trails. one negative about room 301: it is facing Main Avenue, the main road through Hawley, to and from other towns. So if you are a light sleeper, you might hear the cars and trucks coming and going. I didn't have a problem until I was getting up, hard to fall back to sleep. Room 301 is the only room with 2 Queens size beds (it is one of the few family rooms). The other family room is 2 suites connected by a bathroom. Visited again Need I say more. Well developed and professional hotel. Went for cocktails and sat in great garden in full flower. A real treat and they added some cabins which I guess are fir weddings. Also have bee hives nearby. Decided to eat ( again) not disappointed as we sat on the deck and enjoyed air. Nothing exceptional to say about food this time but sometimes that's good as well. Service prompt and polite if we did get offered someone else's meal after we ate. Although we have stayed here in the past, we stopped in to dine on this occasion. They had just launched their fall menu, and everything we ate was absolutely delicious! The atmosphere is wonderful, and we all enjoyed the small seasonal menu that emphasized the local farm to to table fare. Simply put, this is a lovely hotel. From the beautiful gardens to the softest sheets ever, you will not find a better hotel than Settlers Inn in this area. The lobby was filled with fresh cut flowers and comfortable sitting areas. Equipped with a bar, restaurant and patio area, you cannot go hungry and certainly not thirsty staying here. I felt safe here and would return for sure. Each hotel room is unique and different. Mine had a view of the garden, a small couch and an armoire to hang my clothes in. This is not a "trendy" place to stay, but rather a classic bed and breakfast that you would see in a magazine. There is a coffee bar in the morning for guests to enjoy and breakfast that is included. You'd be mad not to have breakfast here- it is wonderful. read more

Cute little hotel. I suggest coming here if you want to relax and get away from it all. If you can wake up early enough, you get free breakfast with you stay. The breakfast was actually very appetizing. I say that only because the dinner menu (to my boyfriend and I) was not appetizing at all and we had to find somewhere else to eat. We're don't have very adventurous pallets and there wasn't anything simple to eat on the dinner menu. The room key doubles as the key for the front door of the hotel if you come in after hours. The room was very clean and small but it was fine for the weekend. The TV could be a bit bigger though. I love the guest book in each room. Reading everyone's nice memories of their stay was very reassuring. read more

Anniversary Dinner 10/26 We stayed at their sister property (The Ledges) and had always wanted to dine at The Settlers Inn. Other than the room itself being slightly noisy (the acoustics, not the guests) EVERYTHING was perfect. Firstly, they decorated their lobby with several pumpkins that were all lit up to bring that Harvest vibe. We loved the craftsmen style decor and place settings. It seemed strange to us that there appeared to be just one waiter. We shared the French Onion soup and the Pork Belly appetizers. Entrees were the Petite Filet and Scallops, too full for dessert but would not change a thing. Great restaurant and place to stay. We even enjoyed post dinner cocktails with Bart the bartender which helped to top off our evening in style. Can't wait to return to Hawley. read more

From the hostess to the waiter and the other staff who served us, they were all the most incredibly sweet and polite people who all did their jobs impeccably. We had a very good experience here for a wedding we just attended. The place is beautiful, with the only downfall of being at a very busy intersection. The town of Hawley is quite small. There isnt a whole lot to do in the immediate area, more of a relaxing location in the Poconos than a touristy location. Check in was a breeze. We were informed that there are no staff on at night with the exception of a live in housekeeper. The room was very nice with a HUGE bathroom, about half the size of the bedroom. Not all bathrooms were the same. A very large whirlpool tub but a very all stand up shower, still very nice. The rooms are cooled with ductless minisplits, although there was cool air coming out of the unit, the room never got as cool as I would like, not the end of the world. Breakfast was included in our stay and I highly recommend the Bear Claw Waffles, fantastic. The bar only opens in the time of late lunch and dinner, it was a little pricey, but there werent a lot of options in the area. Very friendly bartenders. We had little interaction with the rest of the staff due to the circumstances of the wedding etc. Cocktail hour was outside on the grounds which were very nice. I did have to advise the staff of a pipe sticking out of the ground creating a tripping hazard in front of the steps; although they did nothing a out it, luckily no one got hurt. The horderves were very good and they kept bringing out more till everyone was stuffed. The wedding reception was in the basement of the inn which is set up as a function room. Food was good, not great but it was plentiful. It was buffet style and they table served bacon wrapped scallops and crab cakes although they never made it to my part of the table. All in all they have a very nice place there, and if Im looking for a relaxing weekend I would return. read more

From phoning the order in through pickup the staff was delightful.ot was wonderfully packaged, and all we had to do was reheat. All I can say was it was fantastic, quite delicious and the price was great! we actually had enough for leftovers. We are going to make it an every year tradition now! We enjoy going to their restaurant so much and this was every bit as high quality we have come go expect. Kudos! My (now) fiance and I came to Settlers Inn on our first anniversary of us dating and fell in love with the ambiance, food, and service at Settlers Inn. 9 years later, we decided to take the leap, get engaged, and of course check out Settlers Inn as a potential wedding venue. We made the reservation in May, and confirmed early this past week for our Thursday tour. My fiance flew in from Colorado excited to see all the venues, specifically Settlers. When we arrived, a confused front desk employee said the employee who made the reservation for us "is no longer with us." He said he would call David, who is now the events coordinator. David had no idea of our appointment, was in New Jersey and unable to meet with us, and never got the confirmation email from us last week. We were asked to "take down our number." My frustration was the lack of professionalism (we heard David shoot expletives to the front desk worker), the lack of accommodation (is David really the only person who could give a wedding tour?), and lack of organization/coordination (why wasn't the email of the employee who left forwarded to the current events coordinator?). Based on these factors, we decided to not pursue choosing Settlers Inn as a potential wedding venue and will not go back for dinner again. read more

Party of 4, in 2 rooms on Labor Day weekend, 2020. Hotel is musty and old, with no cleaning service in the room for the 2 nights we stayed. Rude and unfriendly shorted blond hair old lady, who refused accomodating or breakfast on the veranda claiming it was all booked. That was a lie because nobody was having meals on it, all morning. She let us wait 15 minutes before we were seated and another 45 minutes before we were served. Poor restaurant service and poor quality food. Salad was old and mushy and we had to refuse it. We waited for bread for more than 30 minutes, only to come with burned bread. Overall, way overpriced with poor quality and service. read more

This is definitely in my top 10 places I've ever been. Some good friends of ours in California held their wedding here this past fall and we flew out from Texas. It's a perfect setting for a fall wedding but it is also just a perfect setting in the fall. The river in the back with all of the trees lining the hill is worthy of being on a postcard. The rooms were great. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. Complete with a feather tic. The lobby/bar area with the massive fireplace was very comfortable and the entire hotel staff was some of the most accommodating and friendly I have ever encountered. Now the restaurant! AMAZING. I was more than happy to see that the breakfast menu gave me the option of adding grilled fresh trout to my place. Along with scrambled eggs it was perfect. Then I went down for lunch. If you go, make sure you have a bowl of the butternut squash cinnamon soup. Best soup ever. The weekend we were there the lunch special was a venison burger. I cannot say enough about it. A cup of the squash soup and a medium rare venison burger with sweet potato fries. I'd eat lunch there everyday if it wasn't 2000 miles away! read more

We ended up staying a weekend here when our flight to Savannah was cancelled, and we still wanted to escape the city. Getting here was a bit of a challenge from NYC - it's not a straight shot, but involves several different highways and a few two lane winding country roads. Going home was a breeze, and we made it to the UES in just under two hours. The building itself is a beautiful historic structure. It has an Arts & Crafts theme throughout, which creates a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. All of the furniture is replicated, and for the most part, it's well done. Only a few things made me laugh (i.e. the design on my "wooden" electric fireplace). Overall, it was clean and comfortable. Our room had a sitting area near the fireplace that was great for reading or napping. The farm-to-table restaurant was the highlight of our stay. We didn't have reservations, but due to it being a cold, snowy night, we had no problem getting a table. The servers and sommelier were tremendously friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing. We ordered: Goat cheese appetizer - baked in phyllo dough with an apple jam. This was amazing. I could have made a meal out of this. Salmon: Huge portion. Could have easily been split between two people. It came with rice and tons of fresh vegetables. Mushroom bourguignon. This was served with a kale, carrot and potato ragout. For dessert, we opted for the english toffee pudding, which was their signature dessert. It was delicious. Too rich for me, so I only had a bite, but it was definitely a hit! Their wine and beer list was lengthy and impressive. The customer service here was amazing. On the morning after a snow, we came out to a cleaned off car, which was so appreciated! Just returned from a lovely short break in the Poconos and had the pleasure of staying at the Inn for two nights. Booking was easy and pleasant - we had a living social voucher but at no time were treated like second class guests as is often the case. The inn itself is really lovely - built in 1920 it does have a traditional feel but on a snowy weekend in January who wouldn't enjoy the muted Tiffany lamps, roaring fire and cozy couches? Our room was well appointed with a spotless bathroom with quality towels and provisions. The bed was super comfy and the linen had a great high thread count - made lying in bed watching the snow fall onto the garden a nice memory. Staff were all extremely pleasant, well organised and helpful - one of those places where it felt like people actually cared if you were happy and wanted you to have a good time. We dined in one night for dinner and twice for breakfast and on each occasion we were impressed with the quality of the seasonal and locally sourced food, the selection, the presentation and the service. Dinner of french onion soup followed by chicken with risotto for me and fillet with sweet potato hash for the bf was rustic, traditional with comforting flavours. Breakfast put fun twists on your traditional items and set us up for each day. Had a family dinner here on Saturday evening at 7:30. We were a party of eight people, One of the members of our group had selected this venue, as it is a proxy for "fine dining" in this part of the world. Upon entering the restaurant, our group was seated after a short wait in a center table. The restaurant was relatively full with a number of large parties scattered around the restaurant. There was a live piano player, which sadly did not really add to the ambiance of a rather drab space. Again, after a short wait, we had a server introduce herself. She was pleasant enough, but seemed a bit scattered and overwhelmed throughout the meal. We were told the specials of which the Duck was down to the last available dish, and the Flank Steak had only a couple of dishes left. It was only 7:30, and it appeared that we were at the end of the Saturday evening "dinner rush". We were also told at this point that the restaurant had run out of the duck ravioli, of which four of my party had planned on having this dish for dinner. Given the very limited menu, this was not a great way to begin the evening. Our server took our drink orders after making a disturbingly, mad dash to the kitchen to secure one of the last duck dish. When our drink order arrived, my father had ordered a Kettle One on the rocks, slightly dirty with three olives, but he received a vodka on the rocks without any olives. As my party would soon learn, there was absolutely no attention to detail here. Prior to the appetizer course, there was relatively bland amuse bouche, which consisted of a small slice of cucumber with a salmon mouse. Yawn. From this lackluster start, we moved onto the appetizers. Three of our party ordered the Risotto with Lobster as an appetizer. The dish was actually Fried Risotto Balls, which is very different from what was described on the menu. It was a total swing and a miss for everyone. Another three people in our group had the Phylo Shrimp and Beets special, which was just ok; nothing special. This is the point where the entire meal ground to a halt. There was an exceptionally long wait between the appetizer and the entree. A table of four who came approximately 30 minutes after we had been seated finished their entire meal with apps and entree before we had even begun our entree. Enough said. For the entrees, I had ordered my Duck medium rare, and it was served well done. The dish was very dry and covered in a red ketchup like sauce that was absolutely vile in my opinion. My mother and my aunt had ordered the salmon, which was served cold, not room temperature, but ice cold. They both sent it back, and by the time the replacement order arrived, everyone had finished with their meals. In addition, two people at my table had a very disappointing eggplant dish, which was just plain sad. Remember, a 20% tip is automatically added to the bill given our party size, which is just plain wrong when on the receiving end of sloppy service, an overpriced menu (relative to the quality of the food), and overall issues with the menu and food. I would have made a major fuss about this if I had not been with such a large family group. This evening was a total FAIL in my opinion. If you are going to charge NYC prices in the mountains of Pennsylvania, then you have to offer a first rate experience from food to service, and this simply was not the case; not by a long shot.
