Okay price very good mac and cheese same with the potato salad. The chicken itself was very juicy and good. Clean and enough seating. Quick service too

Fried chicken (white meat) with potato salad and mac & cheese at Slappy's Chicken, Winston-Salem

Opened in 2016, Slappy's is "Carolina Dipped Chicken" which is something I've not encountered before. Different than "Nashville Hot Chicken" where a hot paste is added after cooking, this is dunked in a tangy, spicy sauce after cooking. Carolina's version leans into a vinegar-pepper flavor that's typical of Eastern NC barbecue. I arrived just before the lunch rush so I was able to get a table near the door where I could enjoy my lunch while watching the queue grow a bit. The chicken was moist and flavorful, still very hot from the fryer. Hot enough that I had to start with a knife and fork to tear it up before I could dig in. My sides were okay. The potato salad was a mush. Pleasant flavor but no texture that leaned into mashed territory. The mac and cheese was good but overdone noodles and no "tang" from the cheese. I'd try other sides next time. Slappy's is consistently rated as a top fried chicken place in a state of great fried chicken places. The concept is top-notch and the chicken was great. The sides let it down for me. [Round number 24500 overall - 945 of 2025 - 4348 in North Carolina]

Mac & Cheese, needs a touch of salt - but at my age everything does

Much here is simple - simple menu, simple ordering process, simply outstanding food - making something complex rarely makes it better, and I have especially found this to be true with food and relationships - it's preparation, it's presentation, it's promise! I get to this little place about once every six weeks. My order is rather boring on the surface, but as I said this place is about keeping it simple, and I do. I get 1/2 chicken (both uppers), I get the superb sauce on the side, along with 2 additional servings of sauce! My sides are M & C and Collards, and I get a small container of vinegar for the collards - the vinegar, other condiments, and other helpful items are up front to the far left of the counter. Once in a while l will get a scoop of their Chicken Salad. There is very little salad here - this made up of 99% diced chicken with a little mayo - the chicken is full of flavor. When home I add a bit of diced celery, a touch of chopped onion, a bit of dill relish, some parsley, a some of my home made curry powder - damn, that rocks! This is good food, good people, and I hope folks will continue to support their efforts.

It doesn't get much better than this. Best collards I've ever had, best fried chicken I've ever had, best chicken salad I've ever had - and it goes on. If you're visiting Winston Salem and looking for our food scene - the real one - look no further than here.

Slappy's is one of a kind! Definitely unique inside with a different kind of feel. Walk up to order and they bring the meal to you. I love the small limited menu, makes it easy to decide and order. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection with a great, crunchy skin! I did my sauce on the side, making it less messy to eat, and I could control the amount of sauce with each bite. Collard greens were great and the Mac and cheese is unique! They had bits of Cheezits mixed in! Great overall taste for the entire meal. Definitely will return!

I mean - this is my lunch chicken place. Steaming hot chicken deliciousness in a styrofoam container with 2 sides and a roll is all you need. I get mine with the sauce on the side and dip my bites. I tear into the chicken with my bare hands - no fork required. They have cheerwine and the ice I like. This is just a chicken place doing chicken where you can come for delicious chicken that doesn't break the bank.

I was really excited to try Slappy's because I've heard so many great things and I think overall, it's decent, but I would say the flavor just did not live up to the hype. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars! I came on Friday at 3pm so it was not busy at all. This is a no frills, small shop with two seating areas and basic decor/design. It's next to Monstercade and Easy Tiger which I still hope to try soon! It's nice to visit someplace that's known for one thing and has a limited menu - no choice overload/paralysis here. I went with the quarter chicken with mac and cheese and collard greens. Service was very fast/standard, I had barely sat down at the table and my tray had come out. I opted for the sauce on the side, and I think that might have been my mistake because the fried chicken itself was not super flavorful. It was honestly a little dry too, but the sauce was really tasty so I just dipped every bite into it. I did enjoy the collard greens- I wouldn't normally order those but read great things about them so decided to give them a try. The mac and cheese was okay, definitely thick and cheesy but a little lacking in flavor and could have been a bit warmer too. Value wise, it's pretty good. About $15 after tax/tip for a filling meal. I think I'd give it another chance, would definitely get the chicken dipped and would try a side other than mac!

If you're looking for delicious fried chicken with the best sauce, this is the place! We used to frequent here before Covid and then they had to close for awhile. This was our first time back since, and it was as good as I remember. My husband and I both got the half chicken with two sides, collards and cheez it Mac and cheese. The chicken is perfectly fried and then you have the option to have it dipped or not, which we also opt for the dipped chicken. The sides are amazing and then it comes with rolls too. I mean, the Mac and cheese has cheez its in it!? And the collards have bacon!? What's not to love!? Service is always super friendly and quick! Ambiance is laid back, checkered tables and paper napkins. Another plus is this restaurant is surrounded by two bars, so you can visit those after supper. Highly recommend this place if you haven't been. We love it so much that we opted for it over a fancy meal for our ninth wedding anniversary meal last night!

From the Raliegh New & Observer: "Slappy's Chicken in Winston-Salem topped the list from the review website Yelp." I can see why, I got the half chicken order that came with two sides. I had gotten my hair cut in the barber that is next door and the guy who cut my hair said they had the best greens he had tasted...again...if it wasn't the best it was really, really close to being the best I've had. This place is not going to be for everyone, there are no linen tablecloths and a very simple menu. However if you enjoy excellent fried chicken then this is a great place to go to in WS. There is a small lot to park in along with some street parking, there are tables inside and out. I think the only thing I would do different is not have the chicken dipped in sauce, but to have it served on the side so I can enjoy the chicken firstly and then the sauce along with it. An great place to get some good food for sure.

Yes, I had to get a slice of the refrigerator pie for dessert. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't do it also

So there I was in Winston-Salem North Carolina talking to a friend and commenting about how I was kind of hankering for some amazing chicken. He said. "Have you ever heard of Slappy's? I said,"No, it sounds painful". He said, "I'm going to hook you up!" And hook me up he did. First of all, I am definitely a sucker for little hole in the wall food joints. It's been my experience that they are always your best bet when exploring a new city. I have to say Slappy's Chicken is now at the top of my list of chicken places to go. When we pulled up and I saw their logo was a skeleton chicken riding a skateboard, I knew that this was going to be a lifelong love affair. Going into the quaint little storefront, it's basically white with some skateboard decks screwed into the walls, but that does not deter from the amazing aromas that come out of that place! I ordered the quarter chicken with collard greens, and Cheez-It macaroni and cheese. When you order the chicken you get two choices; either dry or wet. You are a fool. If you do not get the chicken wet. Whatever that magic sauce is that they make is one of the most phenomenal tasting things I have ever had. It's got a smoky sweet flavor that isn't too intense. And much like that other chicken place, this place really is finger looking good! One of the cooler aspects when you go there is if you start fighting about who's going to pay the bill, they hand you two dice to roll and whoever gets the highest count pays. Pretty slick. All in all. I would absolutely 100% recommend this place to anyone who likes really good chicken. And make sure you buy a t-shirt cuz they are pretty damn cool!

Just driving by and I was curious of this place because it would always be packed. I walked in and the service was great. He knew I had never been there so he explained the menu perfect and I was able to order some hot chicken with Mac and cheese and collard greens. This food was so good I enjoyed every bite! There were places for us to sit and the decorations was nice.

    Breast and wing combo!!!

Damn, I was in town for work and a customer suggested we go here. I've all ordered the breast and wing combo( sauce on the side), it comes with 2 sides I choose Cole slaw and Mac and cheese. We ordered and the countered and by the time I got back from washing my hands the food was in the table, can't beat that. Getting there you would have no idea that it's even a restaurant let alone that the food is that good. I'm very thankful for the locals for sharing their spot.

Slappys is quickly becoming my favorite place to go for fried chicken. It's quick to order and receive your food. The sides taste like comfort food. There's a good amount of seating inside and outside after the remodel. My go to sides are the potato salad, collard greens and cheez it mac and cheese. They are all delicious and have a lot of flavor. The breading is crunchy and the meat is super juicy and tender. I haven't been disappointed so I keep going back!

Is anything on the menu gluten free!?

The collards, cole slaw, and baked beans are certainly gluten free, in addition to being excellent. Sometimes we just have these for lunch, they are that good.…

    Is it good?

Absolutely! Delish. Tangy and touch spicy. Great flavor.

Do they do they take cards?

    yes, they take cards
