I was craving BBQ on my trip through the NC. This just happened to be the closest one on my way to Winston Salem. It's a real hole in the wall dive restaurant. Walls are floor to ceiling decorated in whatever random things you can find at a thrift store. The food. Incredible. I think I gained 10lbs from this stop and make no joke on that one. If you wanna talk about GOOD FOOD.... This place is IT!!! I ordered delivery on the 4th July and was NOT disappointed. In fact, I was BLOWN away! The hotdog was so perfect. Topped with chili that tasted homemade. The mac n cheese bites were crispy and hot even after being delivered. The baked beans were KNOCK OUT!!!! I also ordered a Lexington BBQ sandwich which was AMAZING! We tried Prissy Polly's for the first time today and it was pretty good! We got a huge amount of food to try everything that seemed appealing and really enjoyed most of it. I had the chicken fried chicken with sawmill gravy over mashed (the mashed taste boxed) but the gravy is very good. My daughter got the N.C. pulled pork and it was nice- very tender, good flavor. My husband got the burger- the chili was nice on it, but I found the burger itself to be small and nothing special. For the sides we had a ton of hush puppies, Mac and cheese AND Mac and cheese bites, the mashed (meh), Brunswick stew, baked beans and fries. The fries were a cut above the usual offering, really crisp and well seasoned. The stew was nice and the Mac and cheese was good both in the traditional way and the fried bites. I LOVE hush puppies and theirs are done in little rings which was different and good. We also tried three desserts- the pecan cheesecake, chocolate cobbler and banana pudding. The chocolate cobbler was the star to me, really rich and delicious like a half cooked brownie, topped with ice cream it was very delicious. The cheesecake tasted real and was nice but the praline topping was too sweet for me. The banana pudding was a nice version, very classic. The dessert prices are good for the portions you get too. Ordered online did have to wait an extra 10 minutes from the time I selected. There is a drive thru if you don't feel like going inside. The food was ok over all. I had the NC BBQ sandwich tray which is 9.49 before tax. You can pick which type of BBQ you want. There is Lexington, Eastern or half and half ( mix of both). I decided to go with the half and half. The sandwich did get kinda soggy at the bottom due to my collard green juice went all over the place as you see the box. The collard greens had no flavor at all I had to put salt and pepper. And honestly didn't do much to it. The Mac and cheese bites was crispy and you get 4. The best thing was the hush puppies also get about 4 in the bag. read more

You won't find many barbecue restaurants in the Piedmont Triad that offer patrons the option of pork barbecue in either Lexington or Eastern style. But Prissy Polly's does just that, and either option turns out pretty well. I won't suggest the restaurant is a top performer in either version of North Carolina's favorite food, but the offerings are solid. This is a counter order arrangement; stroll up and pick your plate, then fill your cup, find a table and wait for your number to be called. I also appreciate that they offer Brunswick stew as a side dish; again, not the best I've ever had, but not bad either. I also enjoy their fried okra. Every now and then you'll also find they're welcoming live music at the restaurant, another nice touch. read more

Prissy Polly never disappoints! Carolyn and I stopped by for an early lunch after a doctor's appointment at the VA nearby. We each had the Eastern Style BBQ plate with sweet slaw, French fries, and hushpuppies. As usual, it was delicious! For those who don't know about North Carolina Pork BBQ, there are two very different styles - Eastern and Lexington. Eastern is whole hog - more pig picking style where they cook the whole pig and use everything to make the Q. Lexington style uses port shoulders. Both are slow cooked, preferably over a hard wood fire. The sauces are also different. Eastern style is more of a vinegar based sauce, while the Lexington sauce has more of a tomato base. Both are quite tasty, and quite different. Three are also differences in the sides: two different slaws. Eastern is sweet and yellow (has some mustard in it) while the Lexington style is called BBQ Slaw and uses the tomato based Lexington BBQ sauce. Eastern sides include boiled potatoes with a bit of a kick. Their Hush Puppies are to die for! Truth is, it is all delicious, and Prissy Polly serves BOTH styles. You can mix and match the sides, and build your BBQ plate just the way you want it. You order and pay at the counter and they bring it to your table. You can also get it to go, or even use the drive-thru. Everyone is so friendly, and the BBQ (whichever you choose) is among the best in the area. Lots to choose from on the menu and when I had already planned to get the chicken fingers to try all the different flavors, I made a U-turn after seeing the posters on the wall about the Grilled Meatloaf. One of my family's favorite places in the Triad. It's kid friendly with a variety of southern fare. I don't often eat the bbq, but it is certainly tasty! My go-to is the catfish, the veggie plates and the bbq chicken, but really I don't think you can go wrong. This past Friday night, my family and I enjoyed a delicious meal and ended it all with their new banana pudding crunch. It's just a big bowl of their already incredible banana pudding but topped with a crunchy pecan crumble. I highly recommend it!! As you can see in my picture, my youngest was obsessed with it too. The staff here often consists of a lot of young people, so they aren't always the most friendly, however they rarely make mistakes and the service is always very fast! Owned by Polly Shore and Polly Wantsacracker, this is one of my fave BBQ spots near the Triad, and pretty cheap and popular too. Some of the girls working here have a major attitude problem and actually snapped at me and got extremely ugly in their behaviour, but a couple of others were angels to make up for it, and even though it was close to closing time and they had decided to shut up shop early (nearly one hour early), their kindness was still able to get me a sandwich to go, and I was able to enjoy it. I think management, or the nice employees, should work with the girls that have issues to not be so hostile and confrontational to customers, because they could easily end up with a 1-star rating for that. In the end I have to give them a 5 because I love their pulled pork, and they did manage to rustle me up a sandwich an hour before closing, even after the open light was off and the front door was locked. We lived in Kernersville for about 6 months and drove past prissy Polly's regularly but never stopped. I'm quite angry at myself from that time because we missed out on some most excellent food! I got a sandwich, Lexington style, with a side and drink. Great combo! Super filling. The okra was some of the best around. The meat was tender and the slaw provided a good crunch on the sandwich. The sandwich was loaded down so if you leave hungry, it's your own fault! I will be back again next time I'm through town. read more

They are taking precautions with COVID - all the tables are spaced out and staff wears masks and gloves. We both had the combo with Eastern and Lexington on the plate - slaw and Brunswick stew. Prissy Polly's is cute and homey with a lot of wood interior, and is heavily decorated with southern sentimentality (please see additional note at the end of this review). You order at the counter. They had a couple of sample plates on display, and the food looked delicious! The young lady at the counter was patient, kind, and helpful. I ordered a large array of things. The price was very reasonable. So much potential here! Will the food live up to my expectations? No. Let's break it down: BBQ (Lexington style): I liked it ok. No smoke. Had more sauce in it than any Lexington style I've had heretofore. One recent reviewer said this is because "they don't know what Lexington style BBQ is". I don't know WHAT to make of it. BBQ (eastern style): tasted like unseasoned broiled pork doused with vinegar Collards: the most bitter I ever et. Devoid of seasoning. Good collards need to be cooked in a smoked meat for fat and flavor. There was none. Baked beans: not bad. About average. Sweet slaw: bland and uninspired. BBQ slaw: the most tame I've ever had. Hushpuppies: competent. They were in rings and were good. Potato salad: taste was actually good, but the gloppy, sticky, tacky texture nearly induced a gag reflex. No food should have this texture. Certainly I can't think of one. The only thing I ever ate that comes close to that texture is that time in kindergarten when Kenny Alexandrow and I dared each other to eat paste. We did. Another time was when my orthodontist, Dr. Marks, smeared plaster on the roof of my mouth to get a mold of my orthodontic anomalies. It, too, had a similar texture to whatever was going on with that potato salad. I didn't eat the plaster, by the way. The coup de grâce that makes PP's a two star rating is the filthy knife I was given. See photo. This is inexcusable. One additional note: PP's is heavily adorned with decorative signs that are unabashedly southern and noticeably conservative. While not overtly political in any way, the signs make it clear that this establishment has some opinions typically associated with right wing ideology. If you are an uber-liberal, you may be put out by some of the signage. Just letting you know. read more

Happened to pull off at this exit on a road trip and decided to give it a try despite seeing some negative reviews on here. So glad I did!! I will preface this by saying I have lived all over, I'm not a picky eater but I AM picky about good flavor. I've had plenty of good country cooking and plenty of bad country cooking and this is some of the best I've had. I ordered a combo plate with catfish, Lexington bbq, fried okra, and sweet slaw. It also came with their ring hush puppies. Everything was excellent. The bbq was just the right amount of saucy, the slaw was a great balance of sour and sweet (I was a little worried because it was yellow which I'd never seen before but, delicious), fried okra was perfect, catfish was crisp and tasty. Bonus points for a spacious and charming interior and very friendly staff and fast service. If I'm ever passing this way again, I'll be excited to stop in for a bite! read more

This is another local place we'd not been to in awhile, so we took the opportunity recently to pickup some of their BBQ. The interesting aspect of this restaurant, for some folks anyway, is that it offers both Eastern and Lexington style barbecue. This is really not all that rare, as there are probably 100 or more restaurants in the state that do basically the same thing, adding one sauce or the other once the pork is chopped (or give you the sauces and you make the choices), or in this case, pulled - so for the barbecue purist, the restaurants that do that are really offering a hybrid form of barbecue rather than a true Eastern or Lexington style. The pork here is not cooked over hardwood coals, so there is only a hint of smokiness, another difference between the barbecue here and that served down the street at Clark's, for example. The final difference, and no small one, imo anyway, is that the meat is pulled, not chopped, which completely changes the texture of the finished product. When the meat is in long, stringy pieces it is rather difficult to eat, and it doesn't hold the sauce as well - there is no "pull" in traditional NC barbecue, whatever the style. Having said all of that, the barbecue here is solid, but is a ways behind the better barbecue in the area, whichever style. They are a little pricey, as well - a pound of the barbecue here is just short of $12, tax included, better than $1 a pound more than just down the road. read more

First of all the counter staff could not get the order right and place had one other customer that was leaving. Then she brought me a to go box when I clearly stated eat in the second time she asked me. Now the the bbq salad I bought for $8.00 was a handful, and I do mean just a handful of lettuce stalks(where were the leaves), would have only filled half the box had it not been piled in the middle, an ok amount of bbq although Little Richards salad has twice as much, 2 slices of cucumber cut in half, 2 grape tomatoes cut in half. Do not get the salad definitely not worth the money. Went home and completely remade my salad with some iceberg, added a few green peppers, tomatoes & onions (the purple ones in the middle were their excuse for onions on a $8.00 salad and the cheese they put on it you could count the strands. read more

Great tasting bbq but there are definitely improvements to be made. We went through the drive-thru for dinner, and it was very slow. I'm not too bothered about it, because it's not exactly fast food, but I thought that the drive-thru would mean some speed. I wish they had their menu posted on something larger than standard letter-sized papers with ~12 pt font because it's really difficult to read when you're anywhere but the seats directly next to the menu. I ended up looking up their menu online, but they don't have their daily specials + other parts of their menu listed online. A suggestion would be to add a PDF of the menu they printed. They only have one window, so you just sit in your car until someone comes out and walks up to you with an iPad and takes your order. Then you wait for the previous car to receive their food. Then you drive up ~15 ft and wait to receive your food. It's less of a drive-thru and more of a convenience of you just sitting in your car instead of standing around in the restaurant waiting for food, which I appreciate! We ordered the 3 piece rib plate, NC BBQ plate (half lexington and half eastern NC), and the shrimp basket, which was the daily special. It came out to be around $40. Between the three of us, we were all overstuffed and couldn't finish everything. I'd say there's a solid 2 meals sitting as our leftovers. Like everyone says, the hush puppies are great. I'm glad it came with every menu item we ordered. The ribs were super tender, a little fatty, a bit charred, and very delicious. They gave us an extra half rib type situation, which I am very thankful for. If complaining about burnt foods is your thing, I would avoid this. I've seen people complain about less char before, but I enjoy it. The pulled pork was good as well! Despite living 10 minutes away, I rarely eat bbq, and my only point of reference for this is my school's meals that occasionally served pulled pork. My school's wasn't bad at all- but it wasn't great. I think I enjoyed this more, but if you don't know what to expect, it's pretty much just what it looks like. The vinegary side isn't super strong or mind blowing and I don't think it needs to be either. It's a solid, simple, plate of pulled pork that's juicy and pairs great with some slaw. I liked the ketchup based sauce a bit more because it incorporated more sweetness, but both were solid choices. The shrimp were surprisingly good! It said a basket of 16 fried shrimp, which looks like a lot less than what you'd imagine. Nonetheless, the shrimp were tender, juicy, and seasoned well. Adding the shrimp, or any of the meats, to top off a salad tomorrow would be great. I think their sides could use some improvement, but they're solid accompaniments nonetheless. In total, the dishes came with five sides and I ordered: green beans, fried okra, baked beans, sweet slaw, and bbq slaw. While the receipt showed the right thing, we unfortunately never received our baked beans and got two orders of green beans instead. Both slaws are almost minced- I was a bit confused about it, but it didn't bother me too much. I didn't particularly love any of our sides, but they're good bites to break up the onslaught of rich meat. I'd love to try other bbq places in the area to compare! Stopped for lunch on my way from Winston-Salem to Greensboro airport. Conveniently located just off the interstate between the two cities. I'm not a BBQ expert but I enjoy good ribs and when in the south I make it a point to partake. I'm not a big fan of the vinegary sauce that this region is known for so I ordered the baby back ribs which was delicious and just what I imagined. Good Ribs are not cheap and this lunch of half slab, two vegetables and hush puppies with iced tea set me back $18.50. And the ribs weren't particularly large so I felt I could have eaten another few ribs. The restaurant is clean and well run with a spacious seating area. Buy at the counter, wait for your number and grab a seat. There was an elderly gentleman bussing tables and passing out extra hush puppies (which were very tasty), a nice touch.
