I had a wonderful experience at Slate Salon today with the owner Mark. He completely understood what I was going for with highlights and nailed it. From start to finish the whole experience was a joy including a super fast and silky smooth blowout to finish. Whole head and blowout, 1.75 hours. Killer. I'll only see him for my color from now on. What I said in my previous review was true - Mark is incredibly talented and he's always been great at color. However, I can't let my positive review from years ago stand when I've stopped going to him. The last time he did my color, I asked him if I should have something more substantial under my gown as to not damage my clothes. He told me it should be fine. My sweater was then dyed a deep purple/blue. I expressed how upset I was about this, and he started screaming at me that I shouldn't have worn that sweater, and how little he already makes off of each client. I told him that he should be replacing my sweater, but he just kept screaming about how terrible his personal life is. Despite this, I paid him his full plus a 20% tip and left. He later texted me with the Beatles "let it be" apologizing for his behavior. I told him it's okay and to hang in there, since I was being sympathetic to everything going on in his personal life, but I vowed to never go back. A few days later, he randomly texted me two random photos of ugly sweaters as a "joke" (presumably trying to clear the air / break the ice), but the damage was done. For those of you thinking, it was a one time thing and it happens to the best of us, this incident only brought out some of the things that had continued to bother me about his behavior since my original review. These things bothered me and kept chipping away, until this incident: 1. There were multiple instances where he would complain about a client not leaving "enough tip" -- I would be annoyed too, but it's not professional to say that to another client 2. Basically solicits tip (which I would give anyway) by saying how much he's spent on these color materials and that the amount he's charging and tip is "barely enough" to cover cost of materials 3. Constantly complaining about money in general 4. Would give attitude if I didn't feel fully satisfied with something and expressed it -- to his credit, he did make it right eventually each time, but would give me a really hard time about it I think with this particular incident and everything in between, he just made me so uncomfortable that as much as I loved his color job, it wasn't worth it anymore. I thought I would give this salon a chance since my colorist moved back to Europe during Covid...Best of Westchester recommendation, what could go wrong? I wanted my blonde highlights back, that's all. It's not rocket science...right off the bat my stylist Juliana decided I should get balayage instead because of my grey roots. She applied an overly dark brown color on the roots and a nice blonde on the rest. $300 later I basically ended up looking like I am in need of new highlights, lol. She also "forgot" to remove the dark brown stain from my forehead that took me two days to get rid of. This never happened before, in 20 years of many salons in NYC and Westchester. I had to go straight to Demirjian to correct the color and get highlights. Ladies, don't take your chances! read more

Makes me nervous when I can get into a salon in a weeks time let alone a moments notice but my regular stylist was on vacation and I couldn't wait. Was nervous going in but kept hopes high as Yelp has such great reviews! What a disaster. Disliked the products used and after far too many hours asking to change and re-do I left unsatisfied with the result. My roots didn't match the rest of the hair dyed and the cut was just awful, awful. Go here if you'd like a haircut that was fabulous circa 1996. Well, I heard good things about this salon which is why I went in. I was recommended to get an appt with Nick, however when I called to confirm my own appt - no one called me to confirm - I was informed that I would be seeing mark instead. I'm having a hard time rating this salon for a multitude of reasons. First off I loved the shampooer/receptionist Lance, he was such a pleasure and super sweet. But when I walked in Mark, who i found out later was the owner and my stylist, was laying on the couch and acted as though it was troublesome for him to get up. He looked over my hair very quickly, and i told him what i wanted he asked nothing less nothing more. When I came back from my shampoo I started by standing while my hair was cut - a new phenomena to me but it was refreshing to see something different. Then he did the initial cut and asked me if i liked the length, i said "Yes :)" then he continued to cut, cut, cut, and ended up cutting 1-2" additional off after i said i was happy with the length. :( My hair cut looks great, however its not exactly what i had wanted, which is why i'm having a hard time rating this Salon. Another strange thing was that Mark didn't talk much, which i didn't mind it was just different from what i've experienced in the past... BUT he did talk to the receptionist the entire time about his credit card statements and that part was strange. I was constantly concerned that something might happen with my hair since he wasn't paying attention. However, i've been looking for a new salon since i moved to NYC almost 2 years ago, and this salon has by far been the best i've seen yet. Long story short... I came to Mark to give him a shot. A few weeks ago Mark solicited me off the street and gave me a quote of $145 for a keratin treatment. He then gave me a coupon which was another 30% off. Tho I have a stylist that has been doing my hair for a while, I thought why not give him a try. I called at 5:30 and he told me he could take me at 7, and I was in and out in 40 minutes. That seemed way too quick to be finished, it usually takes well over an hour. It felt like he was just trying to get the job done. He charged me $250+ and said it was for the treatment and a haircut. By haircut, he buzzed my entire sides and back of my head, didn't touch up the top of my beard at all and left it uneven... I look like a hipster version of Zorg from 5th Element. His unprofessional manner when I tried to talk to him about it was disgusting. He was defensive, instead of listening to a new clients concerns of me being unhappy. Also, he continuously was talking smack on my hair stylist I usually go to (and I feel terrible i didn't this time and will definitely be going back to him). Apparently Mark knows him for the last 25 years through what he called "the scene", and divulged private information that should not have been shared, whether true or not. I called Mark 45 minutes after I left rather than saying something while I was there. Out of respect for a business owner, I thought more of him than to engage in front of other clients. The first thing he said to me on the phone was "I was wondering why you didn't tip me on $263". Is this guy kidding!? I couldn't believe what I heard. A gratuity is given on a service when you're happy with a service. How appalling and unprofessional to even ask for a tip. He then continued by telling me how the other people in the salon told him that I looked great after I left. Both things that are terrible etiquette for a business owner. Not to mention, my roots are still a bit wavy, so the treatment I got didn't even work completely. I'm left with a 'wtf happened to you' hair cut, and now have to go spend more money if I want to get the treatment done right... Fail. Coming from a family that was in the business for 25+ years, I'm at awe to see that he's lasted this long. Today, I took time out of my work day, by going there to try and straighten out this matter, but Mark was more concerned that it was his birthday and that I was being 'unreasonable'. You would think this man was turning sweet 16, not 48... I went in there trying to be truly amicable, and I've never felt this way about any hair treatment or cut that I've ever received in my life. read more

I never gave anyone a bad review however this time I feel like I have to. If -0 stars was available that's what I would've given Mark( the business owner). I thought I would give him a shot since my hair stylist was on vacation for a week and I was desperate to get my roots touched up before my vacation. After a phone consultation Mark told me he will charge me $250 for partial highlights. The next day I was in his salon, he was running late with a client so I patiently waited about 45 minutes. Once I was in his chair we talked about what he thought I should have done. He told me that for $350 he will also trim my hair. I agreed and went on with the process. The color was good, although he didn't even touch the hair line behind my head but the cut was what really did it. It was the worst cut I've ever got in my life and I will also post the pictures to prove it. I didn't realize what a bad job he did until a few days later after I washed my hair and blow dried it straight. When I contacted him with my concern he told me that every artist has bad days. Wow, was I happy to find Slate and Mark through other honest yelpers! I went to see him for the first time with extremely damaged, dry highlights. Beforehand, I tried everything from hot oil treatments to Moroccan oil to help decrease the damage and dryness. As other customers commented, Mark was extremely attentive and an expert at highlight and color. Furthermore, he make you feel very comfortable, listens to you and gives you what you ask for while subtly making extremely well thought out, helpful suggestions along the way. The salon was a very welcoming, cozy ambience. It has been over two months since I made my appointment and my highlights grew out in a very natural manner. My hair also looks and feels so much healthier. I can't wait to see what he does for summer highlights .I highly recommend him without the slightest hesitation. read more

Awesome place! I walked by this place a few times in my neighborhood and decided to go here on impulse yesterday, and I'm so glad I did! The shop looked like a nice edgy place where I could get a razor haircut and fix up my platinum blonde hair, and it was exactly that. After 3 years of being a platinum blonde with long hair, my hair had seen better days. I was worried that it wouldn't be able to handle any more treatment, so I had been growing out the roots for a few months and it was turning yellow. I thought I might have to go completely brown, but Mark jumped in and saved the day. He treated my hair with Oloplex and added low lights to give my hair time to heal. It looked totally natural and healthy after! The hair cut was also great. I wanted something cool with a bit of a punk edge, but still professional for work, and I totally left feeling like a rock star! I never thought I would write a bad review on Yelp - I work in the service industry and someone trashing your place of business or personal service on Yelp is damaging and usually unwarranted. That being said, I got literally the worst haircut I have ever gotten in NYC, and I have lived here for 10 years. It was on a whim I decided to stop in here on my way to pick up some photography prints at the printshop next door. I needed a trim badly and I assumed, how can that go wrong? The regular stylist, Mark, who evidently owns the place, was off for the day and there was a junior stylist there. I am not exaggerating when I say this was the worst haircut I have ever gotten in NYC. I honestly don't care that much about my hair - it grows back, and in the creative industry, weird awkward bangs are sort of in. But the more I think about it, the more I am angry. I honestly feel he has never cut hair before. He was even on the phone with the owner while I was in the chair and he didn't mention he was with a customer - leading me to believe he shouldn't have been with one. He was nervous, like "omg my dad is going to kill me when he finds out about this" hands-shaking nervous. I won't say this is a bad salon, because I have heard great things about Mark, but please please please don't go if Mark isn't there. Like seriously. This is literally the best place for a men's haircut in all of New York City. Joey is the most friendly stylist you'll ever meet, he plays awesome music, and you're usually the only person in the salon. Just as the other reviewers I agree that Mark is a pro with color. He takes his time with the foils and really is thorough. He is an ultra expert on blonds, he made the color look so much better then the monotone blond I was getting at cheap salons. Mark is such an angel when it comes to hair I felt it was necessary to draft this review while he patiently works his way through my two inch long disgusting roots. Mark has hands-down been the best stylist I've found in NYC. He is an expert on blondes and gives a fabulous cut and blowout. He's also extremely nice, warm and accommodating. It's 7pm on a Friday night and he is still here with me. I think his prices are extremely fair given the time and his expertise. I've been to other salons who charge much more and do not do nearly as good as a job. It isn't recession special pricing but it also isn't going to make you leave and spend the next week on a Ramen and cat food diet either. His assistants are always extremely nice and helpful as well. Love Love Love. I stopped in without an appointment since I was in desperate need and luckily Mark was able to fit me in if I came back in an hour. What a great find. I had just wanted a cut to reshape a short cut but Mark told me honestly that the cut would do nothing if I didnt fix my color. Some color to my base, highlights, a fresh cut and some keratin on my front unruly wisps later i looked fabulous. Mark is also so great to talk to and pretty hot too. This man is a genius. I've had many a blonde attempts made at my hair and Mark is the only one who's nailed it. I get compliments all the time. I haven't gotten a cut here, but he is certainly the only person I will ever trust with my color. He's also ridiculously nice and always remembers you and your hair preferences when you walk in. I found Slate in a panic before a major holiday and Mark was kind enough to take me as a walk in, evaluate my hair and talk candidly about where I wanted things to go, then accomplish a beautiful color and cut which lasted and grew out beautifully. Okay, so this is a few months overdue, but better late than never. I would say this place is a game changer, but it's more of a life changer to me. My husband needed a professional cut- something to change his usual outdoorsy/grunge/indie rock to something presentable and adult appropriate, but he's always been VERY self conscious about his hair, so finding somewhere that wouldn't butcher it was very important. Mark was AMAZING. The cut suits my hub perfectly, suits his job perfectly, and the entire experience was great. We had a lot of fun during the process, and Mark put him at ease for something he found pretty stressful. It might seem a bit pricey because there aren't 15 stylists to choose from, but you're paying for a cut by someone who enjoys what they do, is great at it, takes their time, helps you enjoy the day, and really cares about the finished look, so it's worth it 100%. I have been getting my hair cut colored and straightened uptown at a famous salon for years. I complemented a friends hair recently and she encouraged me to try Slate. I started with a Keratin treatment - flawless. Now I get cut colored and styled here exclusively. Mark and his staff know how to ombré better than anyone I've ever been to. The salon is comfortable and not stuffy, plus you get the staffs full attention. You leave with a $1,000 service without a $1,000 price tag. I officially never have to go above 14th street again. I had been trying to save some money and went to a cheaper salon in the east village. The result was orange hair...I "fixed" it myself and ended up with two tones of color and my hair was frizzy and looked awful as a result. I went into the salon for a just a haircut and came out with a beautiful, shiny shade of natural brown and a fabulous cut. He really knows how to make hair color look natural according to the person's style, age and preferences. I have been in NYC for 4 years and have had my hair done by a lot of different salons. Mark is a hair GENIUS! I had been going to him for several years when I lived in NYC and I got compliments on my hair wherever I went. After I moved I still haven't found anyone with the knack for making your hair and color look as fabulous as Mark can. I'd never had a keratin treatment before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but Mark is a great guy to talk to, and the time just flew by as he worked on my hair.
