This is THE BEST hair salon I've ever been to- hands down. The guys were meticulous about making sure my bangs were even, they put Vaseline on my forehead and neck to make sure there was no staining, and they even combed the dye through my hair to make sure it was thoroughly incorporated. For the level of precision and care that they put into their work, I was shocked when it came out to under $200. I am so grateful that I finally found Charles, I really wish I found him a long time ago for my highlights. I've been to him three times now and he does an incredible job making sure I leave the salon looking nothing short of perfect. Unfortunately I don't remember the names of the hairdressers that serviced my hair. I can say however, it is very hard for someone like myself, to easily accept or take a risk on a big change. I've had my hair one length (its been down to my lower back my whole life) and usually my natural color. 6 months ago I got highlights and I went to this salon to cover them up and for a trim. It was hard to watch the gentleman cut my hair as he just kept trimming away and making ever end of my hair choppy. I've had quite a few nightmare salon experiences in the past, from unwanted bright pink to bright blue hair, and it was such a relief to see my hair come out perfectly this time. Charles is amazing. This was the first haircut I've ever gotten that felt like the hairdresser was perfecting their masterpiece on my head. Ambiance: Small, narrow place with a multiple stations and 2 hair washing stations. When I was there only 1 other woman was getting her hair done, so it was pretty quiet. They had a Taylor Swift radio (I'm talking from Picture to Burn, to Red, to Endgame) playing as background music. Hair washing: I would honestly go back purely for that head massage. Kinda strange that the assistant semi blow dried my hair after, before the haircut even began. Haircut: Going into my haircut, it knew I wanted a long bob. I had a few photos, but no real vision. Plus I was kinda scared of going short. Charles knew how to make me look good. He took about an hour and a half meticulously cutting and shaping my hair. It was better than I could have ever expected! I usually straighten my hair or request a blow out after I get it cut, but when Charles whipped out that curler I thought "yes senpai". 10/10 would go again. Plus- it was only $48! I had my balayage done here a while ago and finally have a chance to write this review. I scheduled an appointment with Rin. Rin was very professional. I also had a haircut. The haircut was $50 and the whole thing cost about $250. I had virgin black hair and I was in there for 4 hours. Rin patiently painted my hair. It didn't come out as blonde as I wanted so I had to come back. Which I didn't mind after all I have very dark hair. The second time I got the results I wanted. Rin also styled my hair into curls. Charles has destroyed my hair....I used to go to Charles, for over 3 years and left a great review here because my hair color looked good.....but I had badly damaged texture and breakage. I stupidly overlooked this for as long as I could manage the damage caused by him always applying too much bleach to already blond hair. I had some issues with hair breakage but generally he did a great job with highlight placement and color, always putting enough highlights in my thick hair. Unfortunately he would ALWAYS overlap my highlights, and get offended when I asked him not to! I should have left after one instance of breaking hair. The last time, he completely overlapped bleach onto already blond hair...I watched, but said nothing because he was unfriendly that day and running behind and I knew we'd have an unpleasant exchange. Why did I continue to go if I couldn't feel comfortable?? Cheap highlights in nyc!! I regret so much not telling him to wash my hair immediately and just walking out because i knew this was very bad....So this is ultimately my fault. Charles didn't bother to check my hair himself that day, and was busy and didn't care at all about my hair that day. My hair has been severely breaking for months now. I returned with a ball of broken hair and asked for a refund. After excuses, he refunded me. This is a serious problem and I would seek out another colorist. I have much experience w blond highlights in my hair, and he can be cranky and unfriendly if u dare to ask him to do something differently. I have had two haircuts which were not good and I stopped allowing him to cut my hair. Proceed with caution. read more

I was really excited to come here after reading all the reviews. Everything leading up to the appointment seemed great. They were very communicative with appointment times over text and even let me move my appointment up. When I came in, I had long hair that needed some reviving. It had grown out so much since I last got it cut 6-8 months ago and my hair looked pretty flat. I asked for something simple, just 3-4 inches cut off with some depth to my hair. Some layers. I can't remember who cut my hair, I'm blanking, but he spoke very quietly, and before washing my hair reiterates the length I wanted my hair and bangs to be cut at. I just said my hair seemed a little flat this long so maybe a little bit of layering would help with my long, thick hair. Little did I know he just started going in on the layers all over my head and for a LONG time. To the point that by the time I started to realize my hair was getting pretty thin on one side, it was probably too late to even fix. I'm satisfied with the length, but I walked out of there with probably half the thickness I had before. I didn't even really notice how thin it was until I got home that day. None of the layers really flow together and I don't even know how I'd even go about fixing it because I now have the half the amount of hair to work with. It seemed I had pretty simple instructions. He should've walked me through what he was going to do with my hair before proceeding to thin basically the entire thing in half. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Part 2- UPDATE: Charles the manager (I've known him at least 7 years) saved my head and hair and reworked the cut. I was so relieved. It took him some time, but he did it. He even blended the bald spot! I received compliments almost immediately after the recut. Much thaks to the owner for reaching out and being very accommodating to their client. Its about 2 weeks out since the recut and my hair still looks good! Part 1- WHOA! My friends said I really need to post the hot mess Ryan made of my hair. I showed him a detailed picture of what i wanted, the same picture i showed to Rin who cut it perfect every time. Oh and he cut my hair 2 weeks before today but acted as if he had never seen me before- whatevs, i was cool with that but not the botch job. Mind you, i dont have a bald spot, but i have one thanks to Ryan's nifty work. When he showed me the back of my head, i mentioned that it seemed uneven to which he said it was even. After asking Charles to fix something at the end because the front pieces were choppy (to be specific, it looks as if I have side bangs now), he was very rude to me and told me to leave. I'm not sure what happened here, given that Layers has a 4.5 star review. Maybe the folks at Layers had an off day? My experience at Layers was an utter disaster. I decided on Layers because of the rave reviews. I called ahead and confirmed my appointment with Charles for 12pm the next day and the price of a balayage - $180 with a 20% discount for first timers. Sweet. I show up at 12:05pm and am told that Charles is in the middle of cutting someone else's hair. Someone offers me a seat on the couch and a cup of water, which is a nice touch. Just a bit longer, I am assured. 45 MINUTES later, after a lot of shuffling back and forth, Charles finally seats me. I show him a picture of the balayage style I want. So far so good. He starts to apply cream on my hair. I notice the weird purple color and ask him about it. He tells me he's bleaching my hair. I would have expected him to inform me first, but I roll with it. He is the expert after all. In the middle of painting my hair, Charles starts to work on TWO OTHER customers. He glances sideways numerous times, clearly distracted. I am tossed back and forth between him and another stylist. I wait...and wait some more. Past the stated coloration times. The assistant tells me my time is not up yet, but I know because I set a timer on my own phone. Finally, after spending FOUR HOURS at Layers, my hair is "done". It looks nothing like what I showed Charles. I understand that it is not always possible to achieve the exact same look as a picture, but my balayage is so far from what I asked for it's laughable. The crown of my head is black and ashy looking. The highlights look stripey and unnatural. I am also left with a single blonde stripe at the front of my hair. I point it out and Charles says, don't worry, it will wash out. It has NOT washed out. By the end of my appointment I am utterly exasperated. They ring me up and tell me that the balayage is actually $200 because bleaching costs extra. This is irritating because I expect them to tell me the costs upfront. $20 more is not a huge difference. It just feels deceptive to be quoted one price and charged a different one. It's hard to believe that I had such a terrible experience at Layers after the positive reviews.
