Marcy is literally the only person I trust with my hair. When I had bangs she always trimmed them perfectly. She knows how to deal with my curls. And she's such a lovely soul. Whenever I show her a reference photo she always cuts it EXACTLY like it's shown. She doesn't make it more feminine or less alternative she's exact. As a gender fluid person that's very important when I need masculine affirming haircuts. If you are trans and you need gender affirming haircuts I would 100% recommend this place. read more

Agreed, if 0 stars were able to be given-I would give. I walked in because the prices looked decent but once inside it looked just a taaaad sketchy. I asked the woman who came up to me how much it would be for a wash and blow out. She pulled a piece of my hair out from under my hat and said, "The woman who does YOUR kind of hair isn't here today. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. I had never been to this place before, but after reading some decent reviews, I decided to give it a try. I'm also a student, so their cheaper prices definitely caught my attention. I decided to call ahead to make an appointment: my first call was at 10:53am. "Cathy" answered, and sounded genuinely pleased about the call. Later, at 12:38pm, I called them again to add another appointment for my friend, who also wanted to get her hair cut. This time a man answered, and after getting I got this information across, he told me: "Yeah, just come whenever you're free." This set me back a bit; does this salon not usually get very many customers? Is that why their hair stylists are always open?? A few minutes later, I realized that there was no point in waiting until 5:30pm to get our haircuts, when my friend and I were both free at that time for a couple of hours, and all we both wanted was just a simple trim. I called again, at 12:41pm, and this is how our conversation progressed ("Cathy" answered again): Her: "Salon G, how may I help you?" Me: "Hi, I have an appointment later today at 5:30, but--" Her: "Is this a joke?" Me: ".......Excuse me?" Her: "Is this a joke? You've called, like, five times already today." **Long pause** Me: "...No, this is not a joke. I was planning on getting my hair cut tonight, and was wondering if you would actually be able to see me now. But, never mind..." Her: **Hangs up the phone.** I legitimately stared at my phone in disbelief for five minutes after that conversation was abruptly ended. This is the same person some of you reviewers believe do a "wonderful job" or whatever on your hair. I would never trust these people with my hair, and neither should you... Although I realize I may have called an excessive amount (THREE TIMES), she provided extremely poor customer service, and unreasonably jumped to conclusions. I never did end up getting my hair cut here - that 27-second conversation deterred me from ever having anything to do with this place again. There are DEFINITELY better places in the area to get your haircuts at than this place. If you know what's good for you, and your hair, STAY AWAY. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. My friend and I went in for a wash and blow dry. Not only is the salon a mess, the blow dry was the worst we have ever experienced. The staff did not appear to have any styling experience. They refused to use a flat iron or any hair products. Hence this left us both with a half-done look. The staff were rude and refused to listen to what we both wanted. We both left and had to redo our hair at home. Steer clear!!! read more

Marcy is the best hair designer I have ever had in my life. She's quick, she's got a sure hand, and she knows exactly what she is trying to accomplish with my skull every time I am in her chair. She also listens to me and gives me a little pick-me up every time I see her, even if only because we're both commiserating about our lives. I've been her customer for years and I plan to remain so for years to come -- if I ever move to somewhere warmer and more beachy, I am going to buy her a house near me so that she can be around whenever I need her to do my hair. Kathy and Giovanni are warm, friendly, and always remember the exact look you are going for to make you leave with a smile. I honestly cannot say enough good things about Salon G! It was recommended to me by a friend when I first moved to the city and I am more than happy to give it my full stamp of approval as well. I have seen Maria each time I have visited. She is an absolute wizard with scissors. My hair is fairly thick and wavy (aka a disaster in the making with NY's humid summers). Maria used a few special techniques while cutting and explained what she was doing every step of the way. Suffice to say my hair has never laid better in my life! Yeah, if i could give a review without the stars I would. Got my hair cut by Marcy - the absolute WORST, ARROGANT and UNPROFESSIONAL hair dresser I have met. Why? Not once did she ever let me finish a sentence, to tell her exactly how I wanted my hair cut. Resulting in her cutting too short, and not doing the job I wanted. She didn't finish the job either! Why? "No no I think its good and I don't wanna cut if you gonna get panicked about it". First, its YOUR JOB to not make me feel panicked, and at this time I wasn't showing any panic at all, I even calmly tried to explain to her how I wanted the last part to be cut. Which she responds with walking in a circle with attitude and not listening. At this point I gave up and went to pay. I was just in chock and eager to leave that I couldn't think and just paid in full WITH TIP. When a couple days later I got my senses back and went back to confront Marcy, I am met with absolute arrogance and disrespect and NO APOLOGY. "I have cut hair before you were born, it was the best blow dry I have done..., You don't like it, don't come back" and once again she did not let me finish to tell her what went wrong. I don't CARE how long you have been in ANY business (your work sure didn't show for it), if a customer is unsatisfied, the correct response is an apology. When I talk to the owner (Joe?) about this behavior and asking for my money back - he responds with no apology as well and only gives me half because "... she did a lot of work, you should be lucky I am giving you anything". SHE DIDNT FINISH HER JOB!!!! This ends with him giving me half the money back, without listening to what I had to say (" I don't care" he says) and Marcy yelling in front of current customers "I do work, give her only half and I don't wanna se her face again!" Not once did I raise my voice, all i wanted was someone to listen to my complaints and a sincere apology. An owner that doesn't take responsibility for his employees was the limit for me. Marcy should be FIRED. HOW IS THIS BEHAVIOR TOLERATED??!! For some reason I couldn't find the salon on Yelp at first. I had a bad hair experience tonight which made me recall another bad experience, in September, that I had at this establishment. The woman who works there (Marcy) cannot do black hair. She will say she can. She can't. If you have hair like a biracial (black/white) person you may be okay...I don't really know. But there is such a lack of professionalism that it is not worth the risk. I was yanked and pulled every which way. When I said I wanted straight hair she said something to the effect of "Why? You're not Chinese." I found some of the experience funny, some of it offensive, and some of it uncomfortable. In the end, my hair definitely didn't look like I wanted. I took consolation in the fact that I only paid $40, which is cheap for this area, and in the fact that I never *ever* have to go again. read more

NASTY and RUDE. Let me preface by saying they were so intolerable that I didn't even make it into the salon! I first got scolded for spending too much time on the phone with them just for asking a few very simple questions like when their latest appt time was and do they except cards. Then, having lived in the city for four years, this snarky and rude woman named Marcy, proceeded to interrogate me because my area code was a NJ area code and my voice sounded young. I had to answer a series of questions about my age and what I do for a living and though so confused, I spoke calmly and rationally explaining my life story in order to get my hair blown out. Then our call broke up...and because of this, me the crazy youngster was playing DEFINITELY playing a prank on her and despite my efforts I was denied an appointment for the youthfulness of my voice. I have long hair that's layered. I am really fussy about how I want it cut and in the past, everyone has cut the front too short, claiming this is the only way they can angle it. I pass by Salon G often and decided to give it a try. I went to Cathy (there are two, I went to Italian Cathy). She did exactly what I wanted. I went back last week for a second cut and it came out perfect once again. She listens and has really incredible talent. I have never been so happy nor received so many compliments on my hair. As a small hair salon, Salon G sure is a hit as a "hole in the wall" in the TriBeCa neighborhood. The hair stylists there are very understanding of your needs and make sure you get exactly what you want from every visit. Whether is it a hair dye job, a hair cut or a blow out, the stylist at Salon G makes sure that every customer is happy as they leave the place. The price is also what makes this place great. Most affordable places don't do a very good job but Salon G is definitely an exception. The price and quality of the work they do here is incredible. Cathy has been cutting my hair for about 20 years. It started at Infinity Haircutters on Broadway near NYU. Recently, Cathy moved to Salon G. I like it much better. The atmosphere is relaxed, the Owner seems like a nice and welcoming guy, and Cathy still does a great job. Over the years, I have seen Cathy cut all sorts of hair, and she has lots of repeat customers, like me, who trust her. i enjoy checking in with Cathy every month or so. I've had people on the street ask me who cuts my hair. And my sister, who can spend $100 on a haircut doesn't get a better one than I do from Marcy for about $25. I truly don't get it. Plus, I find the people there friendly. Have you guys never been to a low-key "homey" place. Then go ahead, and spend your money on a more "upscale" place. Marci is fantastic. She has many customers that have been with her for over ten years and have followed her from two other salons. I am one of them. Her prices are ridiculously low for the quality of her work (granted that there are no frills and whistles). She is also funny and all heart once she gets to know you. She works Saturdays (though she can be pretty busy) which is perfect for me. My entire family goes to her because she is also great at cutting men's hair. She is a gem! read more
