Sleepy Dog Coffee is the best tasting coffee in Eagle River. They roast their own beans still - Every Sunday. I can still remember locals who would go there in the morning with their pups for their newspaper and to talk about the happenings of the town. I used to study there when I was in high school as the alternative to the hipster other place in town. I find the coffee at Sleepy Dog to always taste much better, the espresso is not burnt, and it just has the right amount of flavor to remind me that I am in small town Alaska. Sleepy Dog Coffee is forever a staple in Eagle River Alaska that will never forget its humble roots. An old rustic building that's most inviting, it looks a bit small upon entering, but there are cool little nooks hidden throughout. Especially the secret dining area in the back. It may be small, but it's intimate. A great place to meet up or hide from the outside world. They have a decent selection of favorites and the baristas can create your personal favourite concoction, for a price. Add a shot for fifty cents. Fair warning, they make their Exxon Valdez latte WITHOUT chocolate. You have to request it for a charge (the drink consists of Hazelnut-the Captain, butter rum-his drink and chocolate-the oil spill). Such a cozy coffee shop. There's a sitting area with four or five tables in the front and then an expanded area called the "Doghouse" that was much larger than I expected. The doghouse had lots of cool places to sit. The back area had some couches with a coffee table. There were little raised nooks and crannies for studying, conversing, and enjoying a delightful cup of coffee. No windows, but the coffee roaster is fun to look at. Additionally, there was a large, kind, fluffy canine who was very content with head and back rubs. It wondered between the water bowl at the front door and around to the back of the counter. Very chill. The hot americano I had was smooth and nutty. I'll admit that I tend to like a pretty robust cup of coffee, and this didn't quite meet that hankering. Great selection of muffins. They had a lavender, chocolate, cinnamon coffee cake, and zucchini, among others. Parking can be limited. When turning in the left side of the building appears to have a greater selection. read more

Sleepy dog is a nice little place to grab a coffee and sit down to enjoy a nice book or the company of a friend, etc. The inside is cozy and reminds me of being in a log cabin somewhere on a rainy day (maybe it'd because it's always cloudy when I've visited this little place). The baristas are often young, upbeat, and friendly. The service here is just wonderful and they truly make you feel right at home. Everyone there seems pretty easy going and just going with the flow. It's definitely a breath of fresh air to go somewhere and not feel the stress of others. They really keep it together even on their busiest mornings. Many people are mind-blown by the coffee but honestly I must be one of the weirdos that is not impressed. Their coffees are great but they arent amazing. I honestly would only visit this place if someone suggests it. Maybe my tastes buds are just not sophisticated? Maybe I've just had too much Starbucks and Hispanic coffee back home that I can't taste the caffeine here. Still worth checking out! Maybe your taste buds will beg to differ from mine and I hope that's the case :-) because Sleepy Dog seems like a nice little gem. Sleepy Dog by far has the best tasting coffee in town. And it's really fun to come in when they're roasting the fresh beans inside the cafe. It makes the whole place smell lovely, and you can see the care they put into the quality of their coffee. However, the service is not good. One staff member in particular comes across as aggressive. Every time I come here and she's on duty, I feel nervous. Today she loudly complained to me about other customers and it was extremely off-putting and uncomfortable. To cut her slack, this shop is chronically understaffed and she seems super stressed. My advice to Sleepy Dog would be to choose to have drive-thru OR inside open when you only have one barista on duty. Not both. It's not possible for one barista to manage both the drive-thru and front counter. Not without becoming too stressed and biting off customers' heads, at least. read more

This was my first time at sleepy dog and came to meet my wedding photographer to chat and to go over some details in person. They aren't allowing "dine in" but did have a small outdoor seating area with two tables. We came in on a Saturday afternoon and I was surprised to see that they only had one barista working both the inside customers as well as the drive through customers that was backed up to the main road. We had waited a pretty lengthy amount of time to even get inside and place our order when another barista showed up to help. The coffee turned out great and we had a great meeting. read more

This is my favorite coffee place in Eagle River. The baristas are amazing and the drinks and food are delicious. My favorite thing to get is their black bean breakfast burrito. They have a back area away from the hustle of the front that is great for studying. I meet there with my coworkers once a week for a meeting, and it's just the perfect place. I love that the quality of the coffee, food, and service hasn't changed since I started going here ten years ago. I feel like I can't trust many coffee huts because the quality depends on the barista, and usually they are brand new and very young. But Sleepy Dog has never disappointed me. Absolutely the BEST Coffee Roasters, and coffee makers in Eagle River. When I want a true robust smooth flavorful coffee without any bitterness, this is the place to go for coffee. They also sell their fresh roasted beans by the pound. I always choose Sleepy Dog over Kaladi (Jitters) or Starbucks. Their spot is a quaint little shop nestled between the 2 locations aforementioned. They have open and private seating, along with soup and sandwiches to boot. I've never tried their food, but have never been disappointed with their coffee ever! I'm sure their food options dont disappoint either. If you've never tried them, I highly recommend that you give them a try; but a warning to you as you nay decide to convert from your proclaimed favorite coffee spot over to Sleep Dog. read more

I just discovered this little gem today. I needed to get out of the house and get some school work done, and I usually go to Jitters but It can get pretty loud even through my head phones and very busy most days so I decided to try Sleepy Dog for a change. I'm glad I went in! It wasn't very busy at all. The barista was super nice. Everyone in there was doing school work. Not loud at all. Free wifi. I always get chai tea everywhere I go and I found I paid $1 less here! I will definitely be back! Jitters is definitely way more social but if you're trying to buckle down and get some work done I recommend this place. PLUS if you bring your own cup/mug u can save 25 cents! :) read more

My roomie always goes here so I decided to check it out. I've ordered a few drinks (different times) hazelnut latte, mocha frappucino, Hawaiian macadamia nut latte. They've all tasted well. I especially like the baristas they are very sweet and easy to talk to. Good people skills. The inside is a little bit dated looking, but it is clean and have art hanging up the walls. They have other food items for sale but I haven't tried it. It seems like a good quiet place to relax, meet up with friends and even study. read more

I would love to give this place 5 stars but when I went I did not have a pleasant experience. Within the time of me walking in and sitting down to eat not one greeting or even word was said to me. At first I didn't even know if the worker was listening to my order. It's disappointing how one crappy worker can have such a negative influence on a place that actually has nice coffee and food. This coffee house has been my favorite place to drink my gourmet coffee, cocoa and pastries. I've visited this establishment since June 1995. They have an awesome staff as well. The drive thru is also a great part of this coffee house. You'll always be brought thru the drive thru with 100% efficiency with hot beverages and eats. It's a great place to meet with business associates or meet someone with the same common personalities. This is why I've given this place (five) 5 STARS! One Star only because of the regular, Monday through Thursday morning barista. I've been a regular, long time customer, but as of today, March 14, 2013, no more. And it is solely because of this barista and her attitude. She is know to be openly vocal about 'certain customers'. She has had complaints filed against her, and the owners husband Lee has had to deal with her over them in the past. I am filing my own complaint becuase of an incident that happened March 12, 2013. I was present when it happened, as were others. I hope that my complaint will be the last the owners have to deal with over this barista. Another long time customer had to use the toilet. But according the the barista, he "took to long" and told him so openly and publically. How is commenting on a customers bathroom needs in any way appropriate by any employee of any business? It isn't. It was rude, insensative, and uncalled for. Period. I have maintained a pre-paid coffee account with Sleepydog, but I am closing it and demanding an immediate refund of the account balance. I will be insisting on a full audit of that account. If any irregularities are found, I will be demanding action against those responsible. Paul read more

I like mine black with no nonsense added, which is something of a gamble; I just finished what has to be the best cup of coffee that I've had in a year!
