I came by for my monthly bookclub meeting. I got a drip coffee and it was superb. There's a certain national coffee chain that I refuse to buy coffee from because it always tastes burnt. But here? Not at all. They actually ask me which drip coffee I'd like, and explain to me the difference between the two options. I like a lighter roast. They asked if I wasn't room for cream, and I got to add sugar and cream myself how I like it. They have a good ambience that reminds me of the dark, warm autumn colors of coffee shops from the early 2000's. It's moody, it's laid back and lively. read more

I went to this coffee shop based on the reputation of the Kaladi Brothers coffee shops and it did not disappoint. Here is the summary of my experience there: 1) Ambiance 5/5: The place has a great hipster vibe with colorful flags. You can spend time on your laptop while sipping coffee here. There is seating outside as well. 2) Service 5/5: The service was good and quick. They even changed our drink when they realized they made a mistake. The day we were there, however, their card machine was not working. 3) Food: 4/5: The food taste was a mixed bag. a) Kaladi coffee (mix of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla): This is a must and the reason it is a must-visit. The coffee was amazing and was our go-to throughout our journey in Alaska. b) Banana pecan bread: This was disappointing and I felt our homemade bread was better than this. On my recent trip to Anchorage, I looked up "coffee shops good for working" and Kaladi (a small local chain) was one of the first to pop up. This location wasn't too far from my hotel, so I drove over to check 'em out and get a little work done. Since I'd already exceeded my daily allotment of coffee, and was feeling quite the energy buzz, I instead opted for a strawberry Italian soda with almond milk (instead of cream). On this warm Alaska day, it was quite refreshing and just the sip I needed to enjoy some time on the ol' laptop and being productive. The staff here were incredibly friendly and the prices were good, too! They also have an impressive swag section and it appears they sell their beans to go. (They keep them refrigerated, though - is that an Alaska thing? Haven't seen that down here in the PNW.) read more

I went to Kaldi Brothers Coffee on Northern Lights Blvd. today, 11/16/2023 at about 7 am. I have been going there for several years. Sometimes I ask for a refill, and did so today (I have always been given a refill). I was told by the counterperson that they no longer give refills. The counterperson's co-worker said "you can go to any other coffee shop in town and they will give you a refill". In other words, do not come here any more. I do not understand this. I was nice and pleasant with both workers when I ordered my first cup, and when I asked for a refill. I even gave a tip. Yesterday (11/15/2023) I had no problem getting a refill. I would like to ask Kaldi Brothers management: 1. Do you allow your employees to discriminate against your customers on the basis of race? 2. Do you allow your employees to discriminate against your customers on the basis of gender? 3. Do you allow your employees to discriminate against your customers on the basis of age? I shared the kaladi 16oz hot with my husband. Thank god I shared it because the barista's recommendation didn't hit it off for me. I read the history of this coffee shop and was intrigued to try it out but unfortunately I was disappointed. Parking is not an issue as it's located in a complex so there's ample parking. Just don't leave belongings in the car as you will find a lot of homeless folks around not just outside but inside the coffee shop aswell and the staff does nothing about it. read more

I've had three visits to this location in the last two weeks. It's bare bones, efficient. There is no seating area. They are very pandemic conscious. - - - They have a payment table set up so you're about six feet away from the barista taking your order. - - - All the tables and chairs are put up or stored away, which makes it very easy to maintain the social distances. - - - All employees are wearing masks. They still have all the drinks, but food and snacks seems to be bare bones. Drinks have a superb attention to details. Pounds of coffee and mercy are still for sale. Fantastic coffee, filthy canteen. I love the coffee at Kaladi which makes writing this review a bummer. Both Kaladi locations are filthy. While sitting at the Evan's location enjoying a cup of Joe I looked around and noticed the window sills and floor were covered in years worth of dust and grime. The bathroom at the Broadway location looks like something from a 1970 gas station - the wall is tiled which should make cleaning easy but it looks as though it's never been cleaned (same with the toilet). It's disconcerting to think if the sitting areas and bathrooms are that dirty, what is the food/drink area like? Unfortunately, today was my last trip to Kaladi. read more

I love KBC! This particular location is great because there's a cozy fireplace with two chairs in front of it. Just be aware that yes, Anchorage has an issue: we have a large homeless population--just remember, it costs you nothing to be kind to them and offer a smile. I'll start by saying I love Kaladi's coffee. They've ALWAYS been my go-to. This particular location, however, has been inconsistent and I wonder why I keep returning. After my experience last month, I'm compelled to write as it's not the first time I've had a ho-hum customer service experience. The gal taking our order was friendly - refreshing! The barista, however, was not and rather rude. She appeared bored with her job while providing (what shouldn't be) a lukewarm latte. I also kindly tried pointing out to her someone had dumped garbage/spilled coffee cup in a clothing donation box and she acted like she could care less. The gal who took my order was one who finally acknowledged me - thank you - as I was only trying to help them out. I've since taken my almost daily coffee orders to a different business until Kaladi's could figure out some of their customer service issues. I tried contacting Kaladi's directly to provide feedback so I wouldn't have to post here... but they never acknowledged me. read more

This is more of a complaint about Kaladi in general. They keep jacking up their prices by at least 50 cents. I paid $3.75 for a 12 ounce cappuccino yesterday. Three dollars and seventy-five cents. I could have gotten more for my money at pretty much other place in town, and probably better quality too. I suppose that's what happens when you have brand recognition. Anyway, this location. The employee at the cash register was very polite. The barista who made my drink, on the other hand, didn't even say what my drink was. The only reason I knew is because I brought my own mug. They offer a 25 cent discount for bringing your own mug, or at least they used to, because I sure hope they think a 12 ounce cappuccino with two shots is worth $4. The cappuccino itself was nothing remarkable. Not bitter, but not particularly flavorful either. Do yourself a favor and go next store to Middle Way Café for coffee. They have a separate line if you are just purchasing beverages so you shouldn't have to wait any longer than you would at Kaladi. read more

I came down here to take a break from running errands and to grab their version of Cold Brew Coffee. This Kaladi's location is sandwiched between Title Wave Books and the Middleway Café. This is easily the most busiest and noisiest Kaladi's in town. I have never set foot in this place without a long line in front of the register and every chair or table filled to capacity. Luckily when I came in, I was able to snag a table next to an outlet from a couple who left after getting their coffee orders. The seating area is a stark contrast between the wide open areas of the Jewel Lake and Brayton Dr. locations. There is a lounge area with a fireplace close to the windows but it can be impossible to enjoy with the tables and cream and sugar counter in close proximity all around. However, when it's not crowded, this can be a good place to hang around for a couple of hours usually in mid-morning and mid-to-late afternoon. The employees here are super cool and always friendly when I come in which is one of the main reasons I return in spite of the limited space. That itself is good enough for me to give this place three stars rather than two. The seating area is full of outlets everywhere from the circular and rear counters to the tables against the wall which makes this a popular hangout place for students and people conducting work via remote access. The internet connection is WPA2 secure with a password unlike Starbucks which has an open connection that makes it possible for other users to connect to your laptop or portable device. I've had that happen to me a couple of times at the Starbucks off of Dimond and Old Seward. If your antivirus software detects something like that in a coffee shop, it's best to just disconnect and go somewhere else. You won't have that problem at the Kaladi's here or at their other locations. The coffee here is exceptional. The Cold Brew has a rich and smooth flavor to it and it is one of my favorite drinks to order during the summer time. Pastries are pretty much standard like croissants, cookies, cakes, and muffins. I tried one of their gluten-free blueberry muffins but it tasted flat and had a soggy texture to it. I usually skip these and focus on their coffee selections instead. The coffee beans they sell here are outstanding and always a treat to enjoy in-house or at home. Some of my favorite blends I recommend are the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe (a light roast from the Sidamo region of Southern Ethiopia), the Costa Rica Hacienda La Minita (a medium roast from the plantations of Costa Rica), the Sumatran (medium-to-dark roast with a strong flavor and a delicious aroma, I love when they brew the beans for this blend and the aroma stays on my shirt throughout the day), and of course their Red Goat Blend (easily the best drip coffee I've had compared to other coffee shops). If it weren't for the tight seating area and the loiterers constantly coming in from the street to take all the tables by the window and asking you for spare change, this could easily be a five-star spot for me. read more

I Local Trade! True to form, I like some things simple but executed with excellent! My drink of choice? Extra large cup of black coffee. Kaladi brothers has got my number. Red Goat Roast Is the benchmark that I measure all other coffees by. I also find it quite affordable. I buy a cup of coffee in the morning and they invite me to refill it at any Kaladi Brothers location for the rest of the day. The stores are usually adorned with some cool local art with a pretty regular rotation. I have never had any issue with the cleanliness at any of the stores and I am always under the impression that they give a little extra attention to the bathrooms. The staff is what I expect, happy laid-back hippie kids for the most part. I find them welcoming and pleasant no matter how busy they may be. There aren't a lot of places that I can say that I am happy to leave my money at. The nice thing about this local shop, I can go back and visit it anytime I want. read more

I gotta level with you, I like coffee, I'm what many people would consider an "addict". I don't think I am. Why? I only drink coffee when: 1) I'm having breakfast. 2) I have to really buck-up and "get stuff done" behind a computer and avoid the annoying distractions of my apartment (catchup on work emails, photo/video editing, PowerPoint preso's, etc.) Additionally: 1) I don't get headaches when I abstain from drinking coffee 2) I can quit anytime. 3) Most of the studies linking excessive caffeine consumption have largely been debunked. Anyway, moving right along. I come here when I have to work because: 1) They are open pretty late, at least for a coffee shop. (PROTIP: the many different Kaladi locations all close at different times! Do your research!) 2) They have unlimited drip coffee refills. You see, while I'm really into drinking coffee, I'm not really *into coffee*. What I mean is, I'm a humble drip coffee guy. The depth of my knowledge about espresso is that it's not spelled with an "x" and that an Americano is a way to make a "drip-style coffee" using an espresso machine. I there are honestly two tastes of coffee I can distinguish: 1) burnt diner/gas station/trucker coffee, and 2) "good coffee". Perhaps someday my palate will mature past this. For now, ignorance is bliss. That's where I'm at. I just want to drink coffee and get crap done. This place is perfect for that. I'm ambivalent about Kaladi coffee in general. I think their coffee is pretty bitter and pretty pricey. But I appreciate the concept of supporting local businesses. At work, I'm stuck drinking it because that's what they serve. While I'm out and about, I would NEVER go to Kaladi if I had to pay out of my own pocket. However, a friend gave me a gift card and so I toddled over to make use of her generous gift. The gal at the desk taking orders was helpful and pleasant and took time to explain the difference between different items to my boyfriend. He got a sludge, which he enjoyed, but didn't finish, so obviously it wasn't ecstacy. I got the latte, which was PERFECT and I enjoyed immensely. The blueberry scone was awful. The cornmeal and raspberry scone was dry and tasteless. I was surprised by how few bakery items they had to chose from and that what they had was so awful. I was also surprised by how packed this place was despite it's overall mediocrity. We had a hard time finding a seat. I also noticed they make you toast your own bagel, which is seriously LAME. Also lame, the Wifi didn't work for me. What a drag. I went back the next day and was waited on someone different. This time I just got a latte, and again it was PERFECT. 2 1/2 stars. It's large, clean and has tons of outlets! The Internet is fast enough to support things like Pandora Radio and uploading photos to Facebook. I can even make Skype calls to my colleagues around the world. Plus, I think that they make one of the better cappuccinos in Anchorage. It's great, I pay $4 for a tasty drink and they let me hang out all day. They also have some of the nicer public restrooms I have seen in coffee shops. read more

Today 6/19/19, after walking my 3 month old husky puppy to kaladi bros. I was told by the older lady with brown hair blue eyes at kaladi that i could not bring my puppy inside to order I get my order and sit out on the sidewalk and read the paper and drink my coffee. If the puppy were bigger i would chain him to the bike rack outside, but being only 3 months old a person could walk off with my dog. This puppy has many people stopping to pet him at kaladi front doors This Kaladi employee is a dog hater and as such i shall never do business again with kaladi bros. It was cold in Anchorage, so I needed a hot beverage to warm me up! Preferably something caffeinated too. I found this coffee place in town and stopped in. There were a bunch of people in the morning already situated at a table with their laptops working away with a cup of coffee in hand. The place is pretty big and there's a fireplace and lots of tables and even a bar along the wall opposite of the counter with a long strip of outlets - perfect for plugging and working and studying away for hours! And there is artwork by local artists hanging on the wall. Really colorful stuff! On the menu, they offered a Kaladi latte, which I was curious about. I asked the barista when it was my turn at the register what it was and she described it as a latte with vanilla and chocolate flavors. I needed no other info - that was what I decided to get. It was a pretty sweet coffee drink and I liked it! I like visiting local coffee establishments (although I just learned that they have a location in Seattle!). This is bittersweet, my love. I love Kaladi Brothers Coffee. Love them, have loved them since the forever-ago 90's when I was weaned on their one-dollar-endless-refill-drip-coffee (refilled endlessly!) and long days spent doing nothing in the Brayton parking lot. It's a new century now and KBC is a local institution. They have the coolest baristas, the kickingest cafes, the most enviable brand recognition, and (most importantly) the best damn bean roasting from here to Seattle (except for the guy in Homer, of course). So what's the crunch? It's this: their appalling lack of quality control! Shots are inconsistent, weak, burnt , boring, unloved, you name it. Aside from a few legacy baristas (whom we adore), their typical crew barely knows the difference between a doppio and Diet Coke, much less appreciates the finesse required for creating heavenly espresso! Lungo? Ristretto? Whatever, let's just crank a shot. Macchitao? Con Pana? Whatever, let's just add some milk. Your shot is bitter? Okay, I am going to solve that by staring at you blankly. The most disheartening realization came sitting around a KBC cafe recently, surrounded by laptop users who were obviously not leaving. Every single person had a to-go cup. Maybe they asked explicitly for the to-go cup, but the fact is, KBC has fostered a tribe of purported espresso wizards who have acclimated to a lame coffee consuming public and it has made them lame, too. I ordered a "doppio for here" - it came in a mug rather than a demitasse and the mug was offered with no saucer. Minor details, perhaps, but the life I love to live is all about the details. Greatness is all about the details, too. KBC cafe? Apparently all about the lowest common denominator: skinny half-caf latte moms... and don't forget "to go"! Coffee Academy, indeed. Get back to the beverage. It's the coffee we care about, people, the juice is what we're here for! Gripey grievance the second: Stop raising Americano prices to subsidize milk drinkers! Basic Shot + Hot Water = $1 Beverage. I don't care what the Green Dragon Princess does, I care what Kaladi does. Namely, smiling in my face about taxing my drink and charging extra quarters for tap water. Boo. read more

I remember the very first drink I had at Kaladi was in January 2006, and it was a blended mocha from the Tudor location. I was taken aback at the bitchy barista, who gave me the worst attitude, and even more horrified at the awful drink I had. I was panicked; I just moved up to Alaska and thought, "Is this what good coffee is like here?! This sucks! What am I gonna do?!" However, this is a general review that is applicable to every and any Kaladi Brothers. The "too long; didn't read" is at the bottom. Firstly, you don't freeze coffee beans. The National Coffee Association discourages this practice (http://www.ncausa.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=70) and Kaladi proudly advertises it like it's a good thing. Utterly baffling. The whole purpose of Kaladi doing that, I presume, is to encourage their contracts (restaurants and what not) to force a longer shelf life on what is a very quick-to-spoil product. Secondly, whatever method they use to roast is atrocious. I presume they are a mass roaster, instead of roast-to-order, which supposedly permits them to freeze large quantities of beans (quantity over quality, it seems!) Their coffee is horribly acidic and leaves an unpleasantly sour aftertaste on the tongue. I've had a few doppios in my day there, and it's absolute torture to swig down the last drops. Pure, good espresso should not be painful to consume, but I guess Kaladi is pulling the Starbucks method, and covering up sub-par espresso with sugars and flavors. However, one cannot be surprised that the espresso turns out that way. Since you can't calibrate the temperature of every freezer in every Kaladi store, their stale, freezer-burned coffee will pull too many terrible shots. Thirdly, cheap syrups, cheap milks, cheap product. They opt for the boxed soy milks, which don't carry as much flavor as Silk. They use Da Vinci syrups, which are cheap quality, cheaply-priced, bottom-of-the-barrel coffee shop standards (I tend to avoid any place that uses this swill). The reason they can offer so many flavors is because the bottles-per-case are so cheaply priced compared to better, more natural syrups (like Monin). Finally, the attitude. With the exception of one nice gentleman at the Tudor location, every single time I've gone to a Kaladi over the years, from Anchorage to Soldotna, I've encountered the snarkiest, most disinterested, apathetic employees. I'm talking about people who won't even acknowledge you at the register, because they're too busy talking some mad shit to the barista at the machine about some customer that gave them trouble (or maybe too busy talking about the latest indie band that we're all too cool to know about). But I think you may know the type -- the service folk who are too good for the customer, who think that they're doing you a favor by selling you a $5 latte. Honestly, I know this is the whole "Alaskan coffee" but if this is really the best we have to offer, we know why Alaska isn't known for our coffee. I think people wax poetic too much for our local, indie shops, and neglect the ones that are actually good, but not as prolific (like Heritage in Juneau, or Cafe Del Mundo before Kaladi bought them). Kaladi is as ubiquitous and Alaskan as Subarus, REI and North Face: a superfecta that unfortunately includes what amounts to be Folgers-in-a-latte. TL:DR; Hipster cafe that caters to desperate Alaskans who think they know what coffee should be like, but are wrong. Bad service, bad ingredients, and improper bean roasting/storage. Go to a Starbucks instead. And trust me, I'm not blowin' smoke. I've been to plenty of Kaladis over the years, usually in acts of desperation for some caffeine. I really don't understand why people prefer this coffee. Hell, I go to Starbucks over Kaladis, and I'm all about supporting local businesses. read more

Customer service is soooo poor at this location on both of my last 2 visits. I was the only one in line and my drink had to be remade twice because everyone working there were chatting away about who was being set up with who. The only thing said to me the entire time I was there was " here's your change". Just reinforces my belief of when you fine your "perfect coffee spot" the out of the way drive is worth it!!! Kaladi has been my coffee of choice for a long time. My favorite has to be the Red Goat blend. They also have what's called First Brew every month where they preview their blend for the month. They also discount this particular blend throughout the month. Most of the branches participate in First Friday, which is a definite plus in my book. Recently, Kaladi has acquired an elitist following in Anchorage, which I could definitely live without. Could I get my coffee without the side of attitude, please? Here's a breakdown of the different locations: TITLE WAVE This used to be one of my favorite spots because it's close to where I live and close Title Wave. Perusing bookshelves is always more enjoyable with a cup of coffee in hand. However, since the remodel, this location has lost points. It's poorly designed (awkward seating and a bar that takes up half of the space) and the baristas range from indifferent to rude. The quality of drink has also declined. So much so that I usually just stick to drip coffee. This decline in service and venue has caused me to start a hunt for the perfect coffee shop in Anchorage. DOWNTOWN This location is also strangely set up, but they always have enjoyable art, and the baristas range from pleasant to chipper. They also seem to know what's up, so feel free to order a complicated drink. BRAYTON This is the original Kaladi Brothers, and it shows. It's the perfect place to study, work or just hang out. The baristas are nice and the drinks are always good. This is definitely my favorite location. The only downside is that it's difficult to get to because it's off a frontage road. ALSO: If you buy Kaladi coffee to have at home, buy it directly from the source as opposed to getting it at Carrs...they give you a free americano with every bag you buy!!! read more

Kaladi Coffee is one of Alaska's local franchised coffee shops. We picked up one of their Kaladi blends - which has lots of chocolate and vanilla flavor. I liked it only because I thought I was having hot chocolate with a dash of coffee and not the other way around. =P For coffee lovers, that's not so good. For non coffee lovers(moi) - excellent! haha Interestingly, they freeze their for sale coffee beans to lock in the freshness. It's the first time I've seen that, and I've seen a lot of coffee shops around the world. Interestingly, it didn't seem to carry any single source coffee (though, I'm sure what they have is fair trade). I loved the free wi-fi, tons and tons of space, artful & relaxed ambiance. Well, Kaladi Brothers is many things in many places. So here's the summary: Worth a mediocre drink if you want a place to study/hang out. Brayton location - ****, Title Wave location - ** And the breakdown: Coffee - * It won't actually hurt you, but I've never had coffee that would, so that's not really harsh. Hot Chocolate - * They don't seem to sweeten this? Tea - ** Not bad for tea in a baggie. Pastries - ** Better than Safeway/Carrs. Not lots better. I appreciate the 8 oz, 12 oz, etc., as I hate being forced to order stupidly named sizes (Cold Stone, anyone?). You have to ask "for here" to get a mug. TITLE WAVE/N. LIGHTS LOCATION ** Kind of a Seattle meets Starbucks with wireless. Baristas - **** They're a mixed bag but overall pretty friendly. -1 star for the short lady who scowls at me 5 stars for the girl with the awesome dreads Music - * I actually love the stuff they play -- Belle & Sebastian's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, Iron & Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days, Decemberists' Crane Wife, the Garden State soundtrack. However, they don't seem to play anything else? I guess they are too cool for all but the most shoegazing West Coast hipster shiznit. Grating. Ambience ** + Seating * + Internets *** = Workiness - ** Fast wireless makes this KB a reasonable place to study/work, although wireless has gone down several times that I've been there. Half the time you may not be able to find a table, particularly if you need to plug in. With a table and working internet *** BRAYTON/FRONTAGE RD LOCATION **** Baristas - **1/2 Right down the middle, don't seem quite as chill as the N. Lights people. Music - ** Actual variety and rotation. Ambience **** + Seating **** + Internets **** = Workiness - **** This place has a back room with tables and couches away from most of the noise. Occasionally the back room is full, and the whole place is packed on weekends, but you can still share one of the big tables. Internet has always worked. This place has good coffee, don't get me wrong. BUT the cost is crazy! $4 for a 12 ounce latte, SEVEN dollars for a ham pastry. I appreciate good food and don't mind paying for it but this is just wrong. Take your money elsewhere. read more

A lot of good memories here. Their coffee is one of the best locally in Anchorage. I really like the atmosphere, and the barista's are always attentive and friendly whenever I come in here. Just artistic and friendly all around. read more

My relationship with this particular kaladi goes way back and they have been very consistent in their services and the taste of their coffee. I saw that in stone previous reviews people were complaining about prices but I think 4 bucks for 16oz. Latte is pretty reasonable... plus I like to support the local businesses. 4 stars, because their pastries really need some improvement. Coffee however is delicious! :) read more

Kaladi Brothers has very good coffee. However, the service and the food is terrible. I had a small breakfast burrito, that was really not very good. It cost seven bucks, should be 2 or 3 dollars, maybe four because it is Alaska. They did not heat it up - and when asked about it - the cashier rudely pointed at the microwave. Bad food and bad service equals a one star from me. I would go next door to Middle way or even better to Marty's Bagels. Never again will I go to a Kaladi Bros. read more
