Yesterday was a looooonnnnnggggg day. I get home from work around 9:30 PM, exhausted, hungry and cold, with a very hungry dog and my door knob won't turn, I'm unable to get in the house. I get on yelp, find the closest 24 hour locksmith, slimjims which is 2 miles away and call. Get voicemail, I leave a message and I'm still waiting for a response. I've used this company's services twice in the last month and both times, the service has been excellent. My first experience: I had a former roommate put a VERY sturdy lock on the storage unit outside of my condo. I tried removing it myself with bolt cutters, but barely made a dent. Called around for estimates on having someone remove the lock and some gave me $150-$250 estimates! Unbelievable. I called Slim Jim's and not only was their estimate under $100, but they would be able to send someone over pretty quickly so I went with them. The gentleman that helped me was polite and so helpful. With some effort and strength, he was able to remove the lock. Was so grateful that there was nothing embarrassing or illegal to be found in the storage area. I paid in cash and then he gave me his business card for any future needs. I'm glad he did because... My second experience: I was on my way to work this morning and my key got stuck in the lock. Just STUCK. My boyfriend couldn't get it out and he needed to get to work, so I stayed behind to figure out what the heck to do. I remembered the good experience I had the last time and found the business card in my wallet. Called over for an estimate and again, it was under $100. I was told that if I bought my own deadbolt/doorknob replacement from the hardware store, I would only be charged labor. He said that it would be a better deal to go to take a picture of my locks, go to the store myself, and purchase the replacement. He also mentioned that they'd happily bring the materials themselves, but would charge more than the cost. He also suggested what brands to buy and to make sure that I take note of the doorknobs and locks around my condo complex so that I don't violate any HOA rules by buying the wrong color. So helpful! Called to set an appointment after I bought the lock I needed from my local Ace Hardware at 11:20am, and the job was done by 12:30pm. WOW. Not only that, but the person that came over was very polite, clean, made sure he explained why he did what he did, and offered to take the old parts so I didn't have to worry about it. I paid with a debit card, and here's the best part: HE ASKED FOR MY ID TO CONFIRM MY IDENTITY. That made me so happy since I'm dealing with identity theft. That little gesture goes a LONG way. 6:45 on a Saturday morning, take my chihuahua for our usual walk. Came back to my unit with my house keys, only to realize the door key worked itself off the ring and in my work pants. What a horrible feeling, especially with my 15+year old chihuahua shaking and cold. Called a friend who couldn't find any locksmith open in the phone book or didn't return her messages. She came by 30 minutes later and I said let's Yelp it. Even on YELP, no other locksmith was open until 9am at the earliest. Not Joe with Slim Jim! He knew where I was at in North Concord, and said he'd be there in about 30 minutes. He was already coming back from a call. Great, fair price, and he had me in the warmth of my home in less than 5 minutes. While other locksmiths view there business as a hobby and work when they feel like it, Slim Jim was actually working it and with true professionalism! They were fast and reliable. Okay, this could be an incredibly long review but, instead, I'll just give you guys the abridged version: Kyle from Slim Jim's Locksmiths is one of the nicest, most sincere people I have ever employed! I had a lost ignition key in my Buick and it required a VAT Security chip. I learned from watching Kyle (and the fact that he had to go back to Pleasant Hill to get more tools for the job, which he did graciously) that these are very tedious jobs to do but away he went! Halfway through the testing of my cars VAT system.. my battery died! Even still, with a smile and a chuckle, Kyle told me we could either jump the car or I could charge the battery and we'd reschedule. Since he had already been there about four hours (and off the clock for 30 minutes) I decided to reschedule after a day on the battery charger. Kyle came back and went through the VAT testing TWICE before we finally figured everything out. He put in over 7 hours of work on this one job and, when all was said and done, it was still over $100 cheaper than if I had my car towed to the dealer! The job was stressful (& it was my birthday, which sucked) but having Slim Jim's in my corner made things a lot easier to handle, they were very professional and accommodating and it was easy to just hang out with Kyle while he did the work - none of that strange or awkward small talk that you find happening with some of the laborers or repair men working on things around the house. I called regarding the hardware on our front door, which we installed ourselves and never worked properly even when we replaced it twice. After calling and talking to Joe it was clear that the problem was not the hardware as it was a good Schlage set but a problem with our installation. I can't believe we have been replacing the whole set at a hefty price when we could have paid a small amount at the start to get it installed right. Joe. was very nice and knowledgeable and he even fixed our lock on the door to our garage at no cost. One Friday night, my car key broke inside the door. Luckily, I had my spare on me, so it was not as big of a deal as it could have been. The problem is that my spare is not a great copy and, chances are, it'd break with regular use. So, the next day, I tried a few different locksmith places (most are closed on the weekend, I found out), and none could help me: didn't have the type of key necessary, couldn't do anything about the broken key. I found these guys on Google and drove over, only to find out that they, too, are closed on weekends (thanks, Google), but have someone on for emergencies. As a last ditch effort, I called their number, and out of some amazing unforeseen circumstances, he was nearby. I managed to catch him and within a couple minutes he cut a perfect replica of my broken original key. I've had to use their services like 3-4 times. Keys locked in the car, locked out of the apartment, I've done it all! Lucky me, I lived next door to the owner (Lou) so delivery times were a breeze. Even when I was out and about and he had to dispatch another tech, I waited a grand total of 15-20 minutes and was back in the saddle with no problems. Just moved into Pleasant Hill and first order of business was to change the locks. Called them a month before the move just to get a feel and all went well. They said call back a week before the move and I'd get 10% off. They came on day agreed and on time. They were were very courteous and professional. Was locked out of my apartment. Called to find out how much a lockout would be. The first thing I asked was what city I was in. The moment I said "Walnut Creek", I was quoted $120.00. I gave these guys a tip for opening car door using air bladder and wire, I realized next day they broke door opener, linkage, I asked nicely for a fix. They will not fix their blunder. Oh man, what can I say, after my key broke off in my front door at 1am I called a bunch of other places and none of them were available except these guys. My locksmith was here within 25 mins and drove all the way out to San Ramon, the lock was a struggle but he eventually got it to open and made me a new key on the spot as well!
