I recently had an appointment with Dr. Bloom (formerly I saw Dr. Allen ) and really appreciated his approach. Prior to Sloop, I went to a private equity-owned dental practice in the South Loop, where my treatment plan was nearly double what Dr Allen now Bloom suggested. Although my dental insurance is out of network with Sloop Dental, I can still submit for reimbursement and receive a discount. Having read extensively about dental care and the pressures some practices face to upsell unnecessary treatments, I feel confident that Dr. Bloom only recommends only what is truly needed. He is kind, personable, and knowledgeable. I required some very complex dental work (implant), but he made the experience as painless as possible by explaining every step along the way with my x rays. One thing I really admire about Dr. Bloom is how well he treats his staff, especially the hygienist. I liked Dr Allen but one critique I had was I could feel the tension when he communicated to staff. Dr. Bloom has a high social IQ, which enhances the overall experience. I am happy to find a dental home at Sloop. It's rarer to find practices owned by solo practitioners and it's refreshing! Tried Sloop because of all of the great recommendations on the Southloop fb page. I had my first check up and a dental cleaning. Im very impressed with Dr Bloom and his staff. Im a ptsd traumatized dental patient with full on crying and screaming - but here they really took care of handling my psych issues and it was pain free. Im actually excited about my next cleaning. :). The receptionists were kind, efficient and joked around with me which eased my mind. I've moved a lot the last few years and because of that, have been to a lot of dentists. I can't say enough about what an exceptional experience I've had here. My first appointment was for a cleaning, the second for my 6 month check-up and cleaning, and my most recent for a filling. The things that make this practice unusually good are the hi-tech tools (faster, easier, more comfortable), the communication from reception to the hygienist to the dentist, and most importantly not feeling like I'm getting high pressure sales or unnecessary procedures. I have experienced the opposite at every place I've been up until now. The hygienist, dental assistant and dentist were all thorough, but extremely gentle and speedy! It has been 2 years since I received composite fillings at this dentist. This year, I needed to get them redone. You want to know why? The dentist filled my teeth in such a way that the sides (facing other teeth) were not fully smooth. So over the years, floss would get caught on them. And finally this year, one fell out. Another was cracking. Luckily, I found a dentist near me to quickly replace the two. And while the new dentist fixed the fillings, they noted issues with the previous ones in terms of craftsmanship. OVERALL I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS DENTIST HIS RUDE BEHAVIOR MATCHED THE FILLINGS: INADEQUATE!!! Composite fillings should last for almost 10 years. NOT 2!!! I have to echo another reviewer: "Dr. Allen is a bad dentist, but maybe even a worse person" Looking back, I don't even think these original fillings were needed. Worst experience ever! Dr. Ken Allen was extremely rude and condescending, and seemed to lack empathy. I went to him because I had recently moved to the South Loop and this place was convenient. Big mistake on my part! I needed a crown and root canal. During the root canal, he was extremely rough and heavy handed. I kept raising my hand and groaning that it hurt, which seemed to piss him off. I had tears streaming down my face but he didn't stop to make sure I was ok. It was a nightmare! After the procedure he recommended I take Ibuprofen for any discomfort. I told him I can't take NSAIDs and asked if Tylenol would be ok. He gave me the most disgusted look and said to me, in a condescending way, Tylenol IS an NSAID. Um...actually, no it isn't, it is acetaminophen, and why did that question warrent such a disrespectful response? Anyhoo...after the numbing wore off later that day, I was in EXCRUCIATING pain that got worse into the following day. I just knew something was wrong. The next day I went to see an endodontist for a second opinion. Turns out everything Dr. Allen did had to be completely re-done correctly. read more

We took our daughter who's 4 for the first time and she did great! Dr. Kenny and everyone in the office made her feel very comfortable in the dentist chair with their tv screen that she got to pick her favorite show which was a great distraction ! When she was finished she was taken to the treasure chest behind the front desk too and she also picked out toothpaste and a new tooth brush ! The office is very clean and well kept up. I love Sloop Dental. I was one of those "avoid the dentist for as long as possible" kind of people... to the tune of like 8+ years. I knew I needed a cleaning and wellness check badly. And I knew that some dental work done years ago was in need of repair. Dr. Allen was great. There was no judgement -- just straightforward, no-nonsense explanation with photos about what needed to be done. He provided a recommendation for treatment, phased out over multiple appointments, but left the decision up to me. I just had my final appointment and feel like I have a whole new mouth. It was expensive... but that was on me. If I had kept up with my oral care, issues could have been resolved a long time ago. The whole team is awesome and I think Dr. Allen does great work. They are open Saturdays, have extended weekday hours and are super responsive. As much as I hate going to the dentist, I am really happy with the care I received. read more

My experience, while technologically advanced with an amazing Dental Hygienist (Amanda!) and assistants, as well as front desk staff is NOT enough to get me to ever go back. Dr. Ken Allen is rude to his staff and treats them as if they are nothing. He is condescending to patients, when I tried to ask a question his responses were short and in a tone that one uses on people they feel are inferior. After they emailed me MANY times to reschedule an appointment I canceled, I had no choice but to answer honestly... Please cancel any appointments for myself that have been scheduled. I will no longer be using this dentistry and I have been unsatisfied with the services and manner of the Dentist, Dr Ken. I feel uncomfortable with the way he treats his staff by degrading them around patients, with no regard for appropriate workplace conduct. Dentologie will be getting my business from now on. Let me just say: I love my dentist! How many people can actually say that? *points at self* This chica here. I have been going to Sloop Dental for over a year and just came from yet another appointment today. Everything in this place is technologically advanced, the front desk staff members are always friendly, and the space itself is modern and clean. I have been here either 4 or 5 times now and each visit has always been pleasant. My dental hygienist (I believe her name is Amanda) always explains what she is doing and checks to make sure I am comfortable at all times. She performs my cleanings and is very thorough throughout the entire process while answering any questions I may have. I am actually quite shocked at what other yelpers are saying about Dr Allen. His bedside manner is great, he's always so cheerful, and he always asks if I have any questions or concerns and has addressed them whenever I did have them without being condescending. Additionally, in one of previous visits, he had taken me for an emergency appointment when I was experiencing pain and took the time to listen to my issues instead of diagnosing me with any ol' thing. He was even there to calm me down when I flipped out about seeing the needle that would be going in my mouth and made sure I was fine before proceeding. To address insurance issues: I've never had them. I have MetLife, they take MetLife, The End. I'm only giving this place two stars because I thought my dental experience with the dentist was great ! Dr.Allen was super nice and understanding . The thing that will not have me coming back is that before my visit I found a coupon on their website for a free exam and X-rays . After it was all said and done the receptionist or front of the house lady said I was not able to use the coupon because I had insurance. She said my insurance covered it . Yeah I understood that but it ate up my 1000 insurance limit so in reality I ended up paying for them . She also said she understood my point and that the coupons should prolly state that on them ! I was very excited to try this dental office, since it's very convenient to my new condo; however my experience here wasn't great at all. I'm actually very confused how some others stated that this was the best dentist they've ever been to. I left with my teeth not feeling clean, outstanding fees that were not mentioned during my visit for exams (they claimed it wasn't covered by my dental insurance), and having to follow-up myself for a referral to a specialist since the front staff forgot. I came into SLOOP about 20 minutes before they were closing as I was in a lot of pain and needed my tooth looking at. Dr. Allen was happy to take the time to investigate. He diagnosed a root canal and extraction there and then and had me in for the procedure 48 hours later. Now, having a root canal and a tooth out in one sitting isn't anyone's idea of fun, but Dr. Allen was efficient, professional and had me out of the door in two hours. My crown fits perfectly and the whole procedure was very painless. The front desk staff were excellent too. It feels great to support a local south loop establishment and I'd encourage anyone looking for a great dentist in this neighborhood to pay them a visit. read more

My experience with Dr. Allen started over a year ago when we moved to Chicago and needed a local dentist. I came from a dentist I'd known for many years, having a lot of respect for, and giving a lot of deference to him in decision making for my mouth. I carried this respect and deference to Sloop, which turned out to be a mistake. After my first cleaning, Dr. Allen was adamant that I had a major cavity to one of my teeth, claiming it needed to be filled right away. I found this odd, as I experienced no pain, but since I'd had cavities filled in the past and I come from bad teeth genetically I obliged. A few weeks later, I was under the drill and in severe amounts of pain. Dr Allen claimed the cavity was deeper than he expected, and I was now hitting the nerve, and would need a root canal. I remember being in incredible pain, all the while Dr. Allen has little empathy or compassion during this ordeal. Moreover, he was rude to me and his hygienists the entire time (more on this later). The appointment ended with a temporary cap, an appointment to have a crown fitted, and pain killers. The crown was fitted later that week, and I avoided sloop dental for as long as I could. The following year, I came in again despite the previous experience, which in some respects becomes my own fault. I thought the experience I had was a one-off and was due to my genetics or own issues (despite consistent brushing/flossing). First, I had noticed some extra space near my new crown - Dr. Allen looked at it and agreed something had shifted the crown and that he'd never seen this happen before. He immediately recommended I get Invisalign for $2k (which I laughed at) and had no other recommendations. He was supposed to have other ideas how to fix it, which I never received. Moreover, he said there was one more major cavity I needed fixed - he'd actually brought it up the previous year. In fact, Dr. Allen claimed there were three in a row on my bottom side we needed to fix. Again, despite no immediate pain in that area I obliged. After a standard amount of drilling and flilling I walked away from sloop relatively painless. This did not last long, however. While on vacation the next week, I was in severe pain - enough to wake me up in the middle of the night. I went back to Dr. Allen two separate times to try to relieve the pain (for reference I needed to take 3 Advil multiple times per day to function) to no avail. The first time he said he'd left too much filling on top and sanded it down. That didn't cure my pain. I came back once again, but no better result. During these follow-ups the office charged my insurance, which I think is wrong, too. Worst of all in this second experience is the bedside manner. Still in pain 3-weeks later I agreed to come in on a Tuesday morning at 7AM to try anything to help. Dr. Allen didn't believe my pain was real. He said, "I can't help you". I think Dr. Allen thought I was lying to obtain pain killers (I had asked for something more than Advil so I didn't have to take 12-15/day). It was sickening to have the man that caused my pain question my motives and pain tolerance. Fast forward - It has now been 6-weeks and I'm still in MAJOR pain each day. I've received no information from him or even a check in to see how I'm feeling. As you can imagine I'm feverishly asking friends and family for a new dentist recommendation. To sum up Sloop Dental, Dr. Allen is a bad dentist, but maybe even a worse person. He treats his employees terribly throughout every experience, which is probably why the turnover is quick. He's also clearly monetarily driven and will try to upsell whenever possible. Don't be fooled by the incredible receptionist or the flashy new machines and TVs in each room (I will say watching Hulu is nice while getting cleanings), stay as far away as possible. read more

The service I received during my cleaning and subsequent fillings were top notch. Dr. Allen fixed a damaged filling from years ago and made quick work of a new cavity. During my cleaning, he showed me exactly where I needed repairs and listened to 100% of my concerns and questions. During the procedure he worked quickly and efficiently. The end result looked beautiful, which was extremely important because one if the repairs he did was on my front tooth. I do not often write reviews on Yelp but every once in a while, when I do something where the stakes are high and I have a great experience, I go out of my way to write one. I had my first visit at Sloop today. It was a great experience. The first noteworthy point about their clinic is they start appointments at 7AM- something great for a city dweller and worker. They were able to fit me in within a few days of calling to schedule. The receptionist was bright and cheery. The dentist is not always the most fun doctor visit so we were off to a great start. In regards to the cleaning, the hygienist was very gentle and checked in several times to see how I was feeling. She also used an ultrasonic scaler rather than a manual instrument. Although it made my teeth a little sensitive at times, it sped up the cleaning process considerably. It cut back on endless minutes of manually scraping at my teeth- I would definitely opt for this cleaning method again. Thanks, Sloop! We're new in the area and found this place on yelp. So we decided to try it out based on the good ratings on yelp. This place is convenient and can seem to accommodate you even at a short notice. (That's actually a red flag, I've realized-they're not as busy). I've had a few visits and the rest of my family started coming here. Fortunately my family s teeth has had no issues so we've never really had Dr. Allen work on any of us. We're usually with the dental assistants and the short encounter with the receptionist who were beyond excellent. Until reality bites where my daughter had a tiny cavity. She told me how rough the dentist was. Kids don't lie but I told myself, maybe it's just one of those days. Then it was my turn to go sit in the chair where Dr. Allen had to work on me. He was rough and at the same time impatient with the poor dental assistant. I realized I wasn't alone in this journey when I carefully scrolled down here. This is not to undermine anybody but merely an honest and objective review based on our experience. You can take this place on or you can simply move along. This is Chicago, there s a large pool of good dentists out there- MINUS that ATTITUDE I won't be surprised if "somebody" replies to this to JUSTIFY all the bad behavior that we've seen. I think this person doesn't see that his work should go beyond drilling into somebody's tooth, he needs to value the words patience, compassion & teamwork.
