I started my last Yelp review in 2016 of the famed Varsity in Atlanta by saying "What can you say…read moreabout an Atlanta institution that has been in business for more than nine decades?" The answer now, as then, is "What'll ya have?"? Of course you have to get a couple of hot dogs with chili and cole slaw, with a side of fresh chopped onions and some mustard to add to the heart burn. Some onion rings, and a Frosted Orange (ust get one, it's big enough to share with your spouse or sweetheart.) The Varsity claims to be the largest drive-in in the country, if not the world. Maybe it is. It covers two city blocks, seats 800 inside and has space for hundreds of cars. It now has eight locations around Georgia, some of them spic 'n span new, but my heart will always be on North Street in Atlanta, where the restaurant had its start in 1928. Some things have changed. Prices are up. The people that take your order seem a little more patient. And no longer are there special lines for women (and the Athens location, now closed} doesn't have to 'splain anymore why women aren't allowed inside.

You'll need to add some salt, but they're not bad. The rest of the food was awful. AWFUL. The frozen orange tastes like medicine. The chili dog was overcooked. And the chili hamburger is an abomination that should not exist. Think a combination of a crappy hamburger and the worst sloppy joe you've ever had. I just assume this place has to be trading off a nostalgia. The service was slow to the point of indifferent. Many of the tables are dirty. But, it's huge enough that you'll probably be able to find a clean table. What'll ya have? How about some syrup of ipecac.

What a great experience sitting at the bar for dinner…read more I was quickly greeted and got my drink order taken care of. I ordered a two piece white with slaw and greens. Awesome flavor! The staff let me sample the potato salad which was amazing. Was told the story about the lady that makes the pies and had a slice of pecan. Very good. I recommend you give them a try, because I will be back on my next visit to downtown. Enjoy!

The chicken was alright, but I wouldn't say it was the best I ever had, let alone consider it the world's best. This joint is located in the lower hub, but I believe there's also an outside street entrance. Upon entering, we were told to sit anywhere. The interior is rather dim, and it wasn't super clean as there were still some crumbs on our table from the last people who dined there. There is also a very casual feel to the place, exemplified by the fact that food is served on styrofoam plates and paper trays. FOOD: 2-Piece Dark (Thigh & Leg) (4/5) - Chicken was nice and crispy, but nothing crazy special to me. I was expecting it to be spicier. Liked it more with the Louisiana hot sauce on the table. The chicken rests on a slab of white bread and is served with average slaw and sweet baked beans. Fried Okra (3.5/5) - First time having fried okra. Not bad, and I guess frying it eliminates the slimy texture associated with okra. SERVICE: I am not usually one to complain about service. The person who served us was sweet when we did interact, but it was so hard to get their attention to order and get the bill. But beyond that, the kitchen was noticeably SLOW. My brother and I literally only ordered one plate/portion to share since we wanted to try more places, but it took over half an hour to receive our food. They do emphasize that food is cooked to order, but I still found the wait to be baffling. TLDR// Come here or don't, but if you do, make sure you are not on a time crunch. Maybe I am just being harsh because I was expecting more from a place claiming to have the world's best.

We went with a friend and none of us had ever been. I was convinced before we arrived that I was NOT going to get what I wanted. I WAS WRONG. We each ordered a small one patty smashed burger, all with cheese, one with Smiley's sauce one it, one with the sauce on the side and one no sauce. We then ordered an order of fries and requested no spice. No problem. Then the homemade chips and no special sauce. Again, no problem. The homemade potato chips and fries came with Smiley's special sauce. Other condiments were on a table for your taking. Then the food arrived. The three of us just looked at this amazing plating of food. It was beautiful and we hoped it would taste half as good as it looked. We were in awe. All agreed it was the best burger we had eaten in a very long time. Would put it above other burgers in the Atlanta area and we have tried most of them. Service was some of the best. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Highly recommend.

I ordered the chicken tender sandwich medium heat, with the comeback sauce as the dipping sauce, pickles on the side, fries, and a strawberry lemonade. The bar has a nice vibe to it. They have some board games which I liked. I was a little confused on where to go to pick up orders but it's in the back by the kitchen. So you would walk in and keep straight and order pickup is to your right. There is a button to press to alert someone, if no one is there. My food was ready when I got there. The chicken sandwich was HUGE and very tasty. I couldn't even eat all of it. I could have gone one level up because the medium wasn't very spicy. The fries were seasoned well and despite them being lukewarm by the time I was able to eat, they were good. The strawberry lemonade was fresh and not too sweet. If you want a chicken sandwich, this is definitely the place to be and you get more bang for your buck...as opposed to going to a fast food restaurant.
