After a prolonged period of exercise hibernation due to surgery and work, this fattie decided to throw herself head first into a new class to get her body together... and that new class happened to be SLT! (yeah at first glance I thought it was spelling something else too... whoops) SLT stands for "Strengthen Lengthen Tone" and focuses on making your body do those tiny quiver and shakes that really activate your slow twitch fibers. This class is great for those of us that need that harder something extra to get our tummy muscles (as well as every last effing muscle strand in our body) stronger and tighter. The teachers know what they're doing and I love that they come around to make sure we are doing proper form to help prevent injury. I am five classes in at this point in time and even though I still suck, I'm starting to notice I suck just a tiny bit little less each time. One of my favorite things about this class is that you can buy packages of classes and you just need to use them up within a certain amount of time. You can make your own schedule (depending on availability) online and their website makes it so easy to book or cancel. With classes maxing out at 11 people in most cases, you will need to plan ahead but it's not that hard at all. All classes for the following month will open up for reservations on the 15th of the month before. For example, for June classes I will have to really be on top of my schedule on May 15th to get the classes I want since they have high traffic. Now I admit, I've never done any kind of specialized Pilates-reformer-thingamajiggy type class before so when I first walked into the studio, I thought I was entering Christian Grey's fun room. I mean, come on... crazy bed-like devices with springs attached and straps for your wrists and ankles?? Whose mind wouldn't go there? Oh... wait... I'm the only one? Alright then, good to know. Def recommend trying this class if you haven't!! They have a first time special for $20. I booked the intro to SLT class because I have no idea what I am doing. The instructor, Emily, was super nice and helpful. She gave us a mini tour of how to use the megaformer machine. The movement is all about muscle control - totally harder than it looks. I think the workout is super effective! I will be back, one of more challenging classes I've taken in NYC. I'm a beginner when it comes to pilates and I think this was a good start. There are cubbies to put your stuff in, don't need to wear grippy socks. Also I didn't realize I would be sweating by doing little controlled movements- struggle was real but the instructor said that the more times you come the stronger you'll get. read more

This is one of my favorite workout classes in the city. I'm always shaking during the workout and super sore the next day. It's great for all levels, especially because it's low-impact and the instructors are often attentive to form. The flatiron location is pretty big, and I've like all of the instructors I've gone to there. No showers, but nice changing rooms and bathrooms with amenities. I highly recommend Pamela's classes. Her moves are super challenging, but she's so encouraging! My only complaint is the price. $40/class is steep, but if you go through Classpass you save a little. I usually only go once or twice a week, but I'm definitely seeing results! read more

This is the hardest workout I've ever done in my life. SLT is seriously painful and it takes a lot of practice to be just close to ok with the poses they teach you. Pilates is definitely great for working muscles you never thought you had- ummm what is core strength? Definitely very very challenging and you will be sweating and cursing in your mind the entire class. Then you will be sore the next 3 days and come back for more... what a masochist lol the studio is nice and clean. There are wipes and deodorant/ dry shampoo but there're no showers at any slt's. Each class is 45 dollars but they are cheaper if you buy the package deals. read more

"This makes Soulcycle seem like rugby" I'm pretty open about trying new and different exercise classes in the city. Bikram, Barry's, CityRow, etc. It's pretty intimidating though to walk into a room where you are the only guy. The basics: SLT means using a machine called a Megaformer. Like Transformers, during the workout you must continually adjust the machine, changing pulleys, cords, wheels, and mechanized weapons (ok maybe not weapons). While doing this you are also performing Pilate Yoga like moves. Net result is a good workout for your abs, core and legs. I didn't feel the chest or arms work was so challenging because dough weights at the gym I think is more challenging. I didn't hate it, but the machina is more distracting that empowering. Caution for guys: it's kinda of a feminine workout. read more

I've been a long time devotee of SLT (aka strengthen lengthen tone) and its truly the most transformative workout i've ever done. The class is 50 minutes, on the "megaformer", set to awesome playlists in a small group setting. OK... so why is this workout so special? Simply because it works your whole body and focuses on the core, that part of the body that keeps you up straight. Since I started SLT a couple years ago, I never get injured anymore, and despite never doing a cardio workout... I never have problems doing stuff like elliptical at the gym. Get ready to be sore. The combination of planks, leg exercises, and other moves on the machine are not for the faint at heart but it works. The con of the workout is that its expensive. A single class is $40, but hey its a lot cheaper than a personal trainer. Book early as the classes fill up quickly. read more

I wanted to try SLT while visiting from LA after hearing it was one of the toughest mega-reformer classes in NY. I used the the $40 for 2 classes new client special to take two classes at the Flatiron location during my trip. I took BB and Allyson's class. BB was very friendly and encouraging during class, the class was challenging and I loved working up the sweat. Allyson's class was the complete opposite, she didn't greet anyone when we walked in and she was very aggressive and seemed annoyed when anyone didn't do things exactly how she wanted them. For the normal prices of $40/class the amenities were minimal, there are two bathrooms and a changing area but no showers (it's a sweaty workout). I did like that they allow you to rent grip socks (sometimes you forget them), the black towels (random but a nice change), and the cut pieces of grippy material you could use if your hands were sweaty. read more

5 stars for the workout, 1-2 for the facilities. The workout is similar to Flexformer Pilates if you've tried that - lots of planks, standing on the machine for squats, some light dumbells incorporated - but the machine is a megaformer which basically means there ends up being higher resistance. It's an excellent workout! But they don't have showers and this is a very sweaty workout. It's not like barre or like a typical pilates class where you legitimately can get a good workout without being sweaty. And, there are not enough changing rooms/bathrooms at least at the Flatiron location. The ones they do have open into the workout room so if there's a class right after yours you feel like you're interrupting the next class when you're trying to get your things and leave. So, I'm recommending it with reservation. If you can just do the workout here and then go to change and shower at work/home/another gym you have a membership to, it's great. As for me, I think I may give it another chance, bring some baby wipes and change at work, or try going to a location near my apt on the weekend because the workout really is good enough that it might be worth putting in that extra effort. But, for their prices I really do think actual locker rooms and showers are warranted and they are just being cheap by not having them. read more

I love SLT, and have been a regular for many yrs. This is my favorite location for a few reasons. In addition to having a consistently terrific rotation of instructors and one of the nicer physical spaces, the staff here is top notch. This was proven yet again today, when I accidentally left my purse at the studio for the entire day. When I returned many hours later, it was returned to me by Claudier with my name neatly tagged to it--it had been safeguarded at the front desk. Inside was a priceless family heirloom as well as $200 cash. Claudier could not have been kinder. High integrity, high quality people work here....I go out of my way to go to this location whenever possible. read more

I tried the class last week, and it seemed like a good class, I was feeling that there is not enough supervision, but I assumed it would be better after a few classes as I will start understanding what to do. I have been training all my life, yesterday's class was the worst training experience of my life, there was zero coaching or supervision. Half of the time I didn't know what to do and the other half I know I was doing it wrong as I have back pain now and no one corrected me. When I go to a class I expect someone showing me what to do, If there are easier variation, I expect the instructor to say it, not hope some buy some chance some one knows it and will do it. At one point I stopped as I have a knee issue and I can only do stable lunges, the instructor gave the red handle.... I have no idea how to use it or what to do with it. She looked at me after a minute and told me again "use it, it will help you stabilize". Thank you, but it would be actually nice to know how I am supposed to use it.... After 18 minutes of doing nothing or doing something but wrong I just gave up, it felt I am actually doing damage to my body. I am not paying to look at other people do what they do and repeating that, I can stay in my building gym for that, if the instructor's job is only to walk around and through in the air random names of exercises that SLT invented I will pass.... I asked SLT for a refund and got a response that all sales are final and they added credit for the class I walked out of, the fact that all sales are final and they don't refund shows that they know they will have to give a lot of refund. Today, I took my second class and I was VERY disappointed with the instructor. I told her "it's my second class" and she called me and degraded me numerous times through the duration of the WHOLE class which is unacceptable. I am not a person to write "yelp reviews" but I feel like people that want to try out an SLT should know this. I am completely new to this whole fitness thing - looking back SLT probably wasn't the best class to start with. Given everything I've heard and read about the Megaformer I knew it would be challenging but whatever I was ambitious. As someone who's never really worked out I can't comment on how effective/good of a workout this was. I did sweat a lot and I'm sore so I'm sure it did something. My class was mostly newbies like myself and everyone seemed confused. The instructor was energetic but not very helpful - she kept chanting on even though it was obvious we weren't following (everyone was doing something different!). The torture machine kept slipping away and I spent most of the class trying not to fall off. read more

Used the second of my 2-class intro deal. Glad to have checked bios of instructors before signing up for class; some but not all instructors were noted to be certified trainers. Attended a class with someone whose bio suggested that she would be competent at leading a group fitness class. The second class was with Jill DeMarco. She was really good! Directions were clear, adapted based on how people reacted, and she corrected forms on multiple people. She didn't make beginners feel bad, and was very encouraging. Thanks to Jill, I think I got a good sense of the SLT workout. SLT is great for people who want to do endless squats, lunges, and planks. Awesome class! If you're looking for some pure muscle control and don't mind being quite sore for a couple days this is your spot. Bethany, our instructor, was so good. Not only is she smiling and positive (and beautiful!), she really was able to demonstrate impressive form and help us focus on things like making each movement controlled and thoughtful. It made the class that much harder. (And this may sound trivial, but she also was really accurate when it came to counting down the poses. When you're holding some sort of difficult pose it's really helpful to know exactly how much longer you have to hang out there.) As a newbie, she gave me just the right amount of attention and was never negative or critical. Fully encouraging. The megaformer machine was also something else...difficult but in the best way. It's what I imagine ballet to be like - controlled movements that are deceptively difficult. I'd highly recommend taking this class. read more

Disappointed!!! I was very excited about the megaformer class offered by SLT; however, it was a horrible experience.The Megaformer workout is great, but the teacher and the facility is bad. SLT doesn't clean/ wipe their equipment after each class, which the whole classroom smells like stinky feet and sweat. The handles are soaked in sweat and you can even see sweat on the megaformer from the previous class (I had to dry it with towel before I get on the megaformer... gross!!!) Also, there is only one instructor for around 15 people, so the instructor won't really pay attention on your posture and whether you are using the megaformer correctly, which can cause injury. I have been to several workout places in the city, and never had such a bad experience. There are too many people in one class, especially when you need to use the reformer. And the space smells really bad. Definitely not going back there!!! read more

Amazing class with Jill DeMarco!!! Me and my boyfriend were visiting from LA (where we regularly take classes at Pilates Platinum) and of course couldn't resist going here too. Class was really fun, challenging, gave great workout (and sweat), music was awesome and studio is very clean, spacious and I really liked that machines are not stacked in two rows. I visited this studio first time on 12/22. I read the reviews online that the Pilates class here are intense and would make you sweat. The overall class is pretty good, and I would consider to take another class to decide if I want to invest more money in this studio. Pros of this class: - Class is intense compare to some Pilates classes which are super slow. I had a nice sweat after the class. - Good energy - Studio seems clean, the reformer machines are clean and so is the floor Cons of this class: - Instructors checked on my body postures twice during the entire class. I would like to preface that I truly LOVE this place and workout but this review is for an instructor in particular! So SLT Flatiron gets 5 stars from me, but this instructor definitely not... I decided to change it up and go to a new instructor here Brittany Ignas but honestly wished I had saved the class. She didn't seem like she wanted to be there AT ALL. She barely knew what steps we were going to do, she didn't help anyone with form, she just kind of sauntered around barely realizing there's a class full of people who paid $40 or close to that to attend and get a great workout. The workout was subpar definitely because of her attitude. She couldn't care less if you paid her, lol. I mean I understand it was a holiday and I'm sure she didn't want to be working but still. I paid good money to attend and I'd like to know that I'm getting my money's worth. I will definitely be continuing to attend the classes at SLT Flatiron but will be skipping her classes indefinitely. I highly HIGHLY recommend Emily Calhoun, Patrick McGrath and Arlene Ferrer. They are by far my favorite instructors. They're engaged and helpful and really get you pumped! Also, megaformer is death but will definitely change your body and you will feel stronger, best workout I've ever done and I've done plenty. I am addicted to SLT! The first time I ever went to an intro class, I couldn't walk for a week and although in pain, I was very intrigued. By the third class, I could faintly see the outlines of a two pack emerging and I asked myself "what IS this sorcery?" Eight months later, I am now ready to walk down the aisle in the best shape of my life, thanks to SLT and its awesome instructors. Btw, I am NOT a fitness junkie (in fact, the polar opposite) and my friends are shocked at how often this former couch potato goes to SLT (up to 4-5x a week). The facility does not have any lockers, but only cubbies which are by the door as you enter the class. The bathrooms are located inside the classroom so people waiting in the lobby enter throughout class. My credit card was stolen out of my purse which was in one of the cubbies. It was used within hours of taking the class at Macy's for hundreds of dollars of merchandise which was flagged as fraudulent. Despite the notice in the lobby that "SLT is not responsible for any lost or stolen goods", the studio should highly consider installing lockers. The participants are asked to stare at different areas of the room during class so they cannot keep a constant watch over their personal items in the cubby. Lockers are customary at most boutique fitness centers which considering the $40 per class cost, SLT clearly qualifies. read more

I've decided to go try SLT after a friend recommend and said it got her ripped in 3 months! I was recovering from a major knee injury and was desperate to get in shape and work out but couldn't do any high intensity cardio (aka running, jumping). SLT was just right up my ally! It is really hard and now that I'm almost done with my 20 classes package, I am sure I want to continue. The results are real. I can clearly see definition on my abs, arms and my legs are much stronger. I have yet to complete an entire class without collapsing out of breath on the megaformer (best torture device ever!!!!!). It's nothing like its predecessor, the reformer so do not get confused. The megaformer works you (you work it?) much harder and targets and reaches literally every single muscle group in your body. There's a reason all the instructors are shredded to perfection. My favorite instructor is Yoo Soon Park. She's very much into proper form and her warm up alone will leave you gasping for air. She will also come by and correct you and make sure you're sucking in your stomach!! I've done a ton of other classes in different gyms and NOTHING compares to SLT. Also worth noting, I truly enjoy the after burn and imho if it doesn't hurt, it doesn't work and I've been getting sore muscles after every single class without fail. The cancelation policy is 12 hours, pretty standard across the board in most NYC studios and gyms so I don't know why people get so cranky over it. Some instructors get booked faster than others and also certain time slots are trickier to get but check every few hours and you might get lucky. I've gotten to every single class. It's really not that complicated once you familiarize yourself with the website. I highly recommend SLT to anyone who wants to get in shape and listen to great music while doing so. Trust me, there is nothing out there that beats it!! read more

These classes are small (less than 15 people), but I get more feedback in a 45 person bar class than I get here. Heard SLT was awesome workout, I decided to try it for myself. I do barre/ private reformers regularly and want a more challenging workout that got your heart rate up. I arrived about 10 mins early and walked up to second floor to studio. ( I think a street sign would help you find it easier) The space seemed a little cramped but modern and clean. The girl at front desk was all around nasty. No other way to say it, I asked where the bathroom and towels were and see just pointed and glared at me. Not cool for a new client to be treated with a bad attitude. There was a brief instruction before class but overall the whole thing felt rushed. During class there was very little actual corrections/ instruction for new clients. The music was also muffled and being turned up/down throughout class which was distracting/tacky for $40 class. I enjoyed that this was a new more intense leg workout but felt your arms/back were left out of focus and not enough stretching at end/start of class. Overall I would give SLT another try with different instructor but think its a bit overpriced for the service /amenities at studio. read more

I took a late morning class while on vacation using the first time $20 credit. The front desk girl was quietly friendly and not too pushy. The sound system is a little muffly, but I could hear the instructor for the most part. The equipment could use a refresh. Some M2s are getting worn to the point you can't read the lines or numbers on the carriage. The studio is modern, roomy and nice. Layout is one room with 12 megaformers all in a row. It makes it kind of hard to see the instructor or the proper form if you're not next to someone who knows what they're doing. There's two changing rooms and bathrooms and towels are provided which was great because I sweat a lot and this workout will make you sweat. The instructor was peppy, nice, and hands on in adjusting people. She gave a run down of the machine and was attentive to the newbies in class. However, the routine incorporated some non-Lagree fitness exercises which I did not find as effective. Mixing it up is fine as long as its in the spirit of the exercise. For example I enjoyed: 1) squeezing the pilates ring in a lunge for the added arms and lats work 2) and doing inner thigh work with the ring stopping the carriage from fully closing on the contraction phase and letting the muscles relax and lose tension. Those variations were great. However in one move, we were balancing on one foot on the front platform, extending our arms and out and freestanding leg back then crunching in by bringing our freestanding knee and Pilates ring to chest. These sorts of moves can be done without the machine, and with only 45 mins I want to utilize the Megaformer to its full potential. The workout part was only about 40-some minutes with a few minutes left at the end to stretch which I enjoyed, rather than feeling rushed to get out for the next class. Overall, I got a good workout but it wouldn't be worth $40 a pop for a regular drop-in class to me. That being said I would come again to get my Lagree fix if I were in Manhattan and couldn't make it to that other borough studio for an intense class, and I can't bring myself to rate another Lagree studio less than 4. read more

I am totally obsessed with SLT and their trainer Yoo-Sun!! I live in Marina Del Rey and take class at The Studio MDR. I came to NYC for work for two weeks and was so worried about finding a good class. I found SLT and I could not be more thrilled! The reformers are in great shape and the studio is clean and inviting! And what can I say about Yoo-Sun other then she is pure magic! She is so attentive in class and helped correct my form which totally improved my workout. She also makes class fly by which is a feat in itself! I'd like to preface this review by saying I have actually never written a review of a fitness class before, but I felt like my recent experience at SLT warranted one. Unfortunately, my first review has to be a negative one. First, I was very much looking forward to taking a class as I've been interested in it for a long time. It took a long time for me to build up the courage to finally get there because I was intimidated by the machine and worried that I would never be able to keep up. There are so few Essentials classes (slower paced that offer more in depth assistance) in any of the studios despite how the site claims there are many, that I thought perhaps I could just take an All Levels class since the SLT boasts about how instructors welcome all levels. Before I even signed up, I both called and emailed the studio just to make sure this was true. I was assured that it was and that the instructor would take the time to introduce me to the how the machine works. So, I attended the 4:30 class at Flatiron last Friday. I'm still upset about my experience. When I arrived, I was checked in by a lovely woman at the front desk who confirmed for me once more that all would be well, that I would be thoroughly prepped before class and I could just follow the person next to me should I find myself lost. Okay, that made me feel better. In terms of taking the time to go over the extremely complicated mechanics of the machine, the instructor took less that one minute to do that. I was overwhelmed by how many things - straps, bungies, weights - were attached and how much I needed to remember. Once more, I was told that I could just follow along with the person next to me who I noticed even before class started was very experienced. I asked her if she minded if I followed her, and she was kind about it. I 100% realize that instructors barely have any time to get into too much detail before a class starts, but this intro was not only brief, but it was curtly delivered. She was clearly impatient and miffed that a new person was in her class. I also need to mention that this instructor gave me an all too obvious once over in the process of her explanation. Listen, I have no problem sharing that I was the oldest and by far the heaviest in the class. That said, I do not deserve to be underestimated. Despite my age and weight, I am actually very strong. Once class began, I completely drowned. Not only did I have no clue what I was doing, but I could not understand what she was saying, though that might just have been a fault in her headset. I desperately tried to follow the woman next to me, but that was impossible since we needed to face forward. I lasted all of eight minutes before I walked out. I have NEVER walked out of a class before in my life. I was mortified that I was doing it, but there was no way I would be able to keep up. I got off the machine looked at the instructor, mouthed a thank you and an apology because I am not a rude person and then left. What upsets me the most about this is that she probably thought I was not capable of such a workout which is not true at all. I didn't even get that far to find out! Before I left, I asked the woman at the front desk to apologize for me as I was so embarrassed. I decided to write this review not to trash the studio but just to inform them and anyone considering taking a class to really think twice before taking an All Levels if you are like me and have no concept of what this type of workout entails. I also want to let SLT know that they should add way more Essentials classes to the schedule if they expect clients to feel even remotely confident that they know how to use the machine. I'm very disappointed because I KNOW I would have loved this workout, but I'm too distressed about the way I was treated to even try again. I'm not sure if this will help anyone, but I encourage SLT to think really hard about how to train people who have 0 experience before they say that an All Levels class will be fine for them.It's misrepresentation to make that claim. And, as a note to fitness instructors everywhere, never ever underestimate a person's strength or endurance based on what he or she looks like. If you do, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Finally, I did not pay $40 to sit on the machine and just watch the person next to me in order to learn how to work it. I'll take my hard-earned money elsewhere. read more

I took my first class last night with Jessica Lynn. I was really, really looking forward to this class since I'd never done something like this, and my job sponsors a weekly fitness outing and pays for it. My co-worker organized it and 9 of us went. All of us work out regularly and do classes like Swerve, Shadow Boxing, Fly Barre, etc. so no one was breaking a sweat for the first time. We showed up 15 minutes early, as required for new people to sign waivers and get a quick tutorial on how the reformer machine works before class started. The other class continued until a few minutes before ours was scheduled to start so we didn't get any personal walk through. My co-worker let the instructor know that 8 of us had never done this and she rudely retorted, "I'm not going to make this a beginner's class just because you've never been" which wasn't at all what she was asking or why she was telling her. Instructors for the other classes we attend always thank her for telling them and then make sure the newbie is set up properly and ready to go. Not the case with this one. This was an All-Levels class, not advanced, but she was not interested in teaching us. For the entire class, we all tried to follow along her poor instruction which was coupled with belittling comments about how our group must have been drinking before class because we couldn't follow her unclear instructions. I was on the end and couldn't see what I was supposed to be doing - which got her yelling at us that we shouldn't be concerned with other people and to focus on ourselves - pretty hard to do when there's no instruction and I have no idea what her shouting "scrambled eggs" even means. She continued to make fun of us, added that she hoped we'd brought what we were drinking because she wanted some, and was basically an all around #*$#*%. The only thing she did make clear was that "we wipe down our own machines here" when class was over. Thanks. Super helpful. I've been to a lot of studios in NYC and have never had someone act so unprofessionally both with her instruction on movement and her words as this woman. My company paid $400 for us to attend and had it gone well, it would have been added to our regular class schedule since it's literally around the corner from the office. After such a horrible experience with Jessica Lynn, I doubt we'll return to give them more money since there's no guarantee that we won't have a similar experience. I've been working on building my core strength and decided to give SLT a try. The workout is intense and fun. This is not the usual kind of workout I'm used to. I'm used to cardio and endurance driven workouts. SLT is about building strength, building lean muscles the slow and steady way. SLT has taught me patience and that not all workouts have to be fast and furious. The instructors keep you engaged and the 50 minutes fly by! You walk out feeling energized and refreshed. Instructors are kind, genuine and professional! The classes are a bit pricey but you will see and feel the results. You will get a quality workout. Have fun! read more
