TLDR; Came back here to have a ring that I bought elsewhere resized (made smaller), and had the same fantastic experience I had 7 years ago. The gentleman at the front who helped me was extremely understanding, professional and knowledgeable, and he was able to quickly and confidently resize me and help me understand some next steps (1 week for their jeweler to resize the ring, which resizing process I wanted and how that might change the finish). He was also very clear about explaining how we would select the right size for me (considering how my hands might change in different temperatures, that it would not slip past the knuckle, etc). Still, I realized as I was a block away after leaving the store that I wanted to take one more look at another size and I really wanted to be 100% sure before I committed. I came back 5 min later and he was completely understanding about my trying some different sizes again and making sure I had all the information to make the right choice, letting me make the decision I felt most comfortable with. After getting to re-try the fit, I ended up feeling confident that the size he had originally selected was the right fit for me. I came back a week later and everything went smoothly when I picked up the resized ring (again, a pleasant experience). It's been a month now, and I've been so happy with the new fit! Tiny, easy to miss but lovely shop on Newbury selling gorgeous antique jewelry. If there are more than 3 or 4 people in here things get tight but it's well worth stopping in if you're like me and go gaga over estate pieces. You'll find luscious rings, brooches, necklaces and the like harking back to a variety of glorious eras. My engagement ring belonged to my husband's great-grandmother. I learned more about it here finding out that it's what's called an Old Mine cut diamond favored in 18th and early 19th century Georgian and Victorian styled rings. Indeed if someone coveted an antique engagement ring this would be a place to look. But there is plenty for anyone searching for something antique, beautiful and with a gravitas not obtained in lots of newer pieces. The man and the woman at this small shop were gracious, intelligent, and very kind, considering that I was asking them for information about objects that were insignificant in value compared to what they usually must deal with. They provided me with lots of information--here's how we determine the quality of the gold, here's what we do with these stones to check for X or Y--and they EVEN gave me suggestions for words and phrases to use when I listed some of the items on eBay. These kind and witty people gained nothing by helping me. They bought nothing and sold nothing. I came here on a Saturday in my attempt to get an atypical piece of costume jewelry repaired for my girlfriend for her birthday. The birthday was on Thursday, so I needed it pretty quickly. When I brought it in, the man I spoke with said that they could send it off-site to someone who could probably repair it, but that I wouldn't have it back in time. I told him I was going to have to check some other places first, because it was important I have it on time. Rather than just wish me luck and send me on my way, he wrote down the name of another jewelry store that does repairs in-house, saying that if they couldn't do it, he'd still be glad to take it in and get it done as quickly as possible. Wow! I could not have been more pleased with the quality of service I received here. I inherited an old diamond engagement ring and matching wedding band and took them here to have them cleaned, sized, soldered etc. The set looked like a completely different pair of rings when I got them back. They were even able to remove stains from harsh chemical cleaners (the last person to wear the rings worked in a hospital) that I had been informed were not going to come out. I ended up paying $90 for everything which doesn't seem cheap, but I doubt I would have paid less elsewhere and the quality, speed friendliness, informative nature of my interaction with Small Pleasures makes me feel like it was worth every penny. They had a matching necklace too with it but at the time I didn't have the money to afford the necklace. A few months later I came looking for a new gift for my girlfriend and the necklace was still for sale there. We wanted to get a vintage ring for ethical reasons, and we didn't want to deal with the snobby attitude and high altitude prices at Shreve, Crump & Low type establishments. As soon as we walked in about half an hour before closing time on a weeknight, we were greeted by two super nice yet fashionably dressed employees, a practical paradox on Newbury Street. I asked if they had any emerald cut diamond rings within our fairly modest budget, and they had the exact ring I'd been dreaming of RIGHT in the front display case! We put it on hold, obsessed over it for a couple days, then went back in to buy it and get my finger measured for resizing (which was included in the price of purchase, just a nice side note!). We called back a few times with questions and always had really pleasant phone interactions with people at the shop. They always remembered who we were, and at no point did we ever feel pressured, rushed, or belittled during our in-person visits. Everyone there (including one of the chatty and obviously longtime customers!) was very knowledgable about the beautiful wares, and it was overall just a lovely, anxiety-free experience. And in the end, that's pretty much all you want when you and your partner are about to take a big life-changing step by buying one piece of jewelry. I'll definitely be back to see if they have any wedding bands to match my vintage beauty when the time comes! And maybe to browse the other treasure trove cases just because. :) read more

First of all, this business shut down for a few weeks and failed to call about my jewelry repair. *I* had to call after three weeks (I couldn't get them on the phone, and my ring was promised to me after ten days, max.). Should you select Small Pleasures for your jewelry repairs, you, too, could experience this same ineptitude. Second of all, I have had two rings resized/repaired at this shop. Both rings are sterling silver with a brushed matte finish. I have instructed them both times not to polish out the matte finish; they failed to listen both times. This last time, after I expressly told them NOT TO POLISH IT OFF, I told them that it was not acceptable that they disregarded my instructions. Instead of apologizing, I was told that "the ring will scratch and you'll have basically the same brushed finished in a few months." When I asked how long it would take to have the brushed finish restored to the ring, the sales associate glibly said "That would be ten days." So fed up with this place. Go somewhere else for repairs - this place isn't worth your time or money. read more

Great little shop. Was helped by a friendly salesman when the diamond in my engagement ring started spinning in its setting. He sent it out to have it tightened and the stone and band polished and I had it back within 3 days for only about $35. And the ring looked amazing as the day I got it. They had some nice estate jewelry, new stuff too, and a bunch of cameos that I had my eye on. Definitely a nice place to find some unique jewelry that you won't find at a mall or chain jeweler. I got a ring resized and it was super speedy and the same price as in the Jewelers Building in Downtown Crossing, even though Small Pleasures sent it out (so I would've thought the resizing would be slower and pricier - nope). If you enjoy being fleeced then this is the place for you! I brought in two necklaces (both costume jewelry) and one pair of sterling silver hoop earrings for repair. One necklace (value: $10) required soldering. The second (value: $30) required reconnecting one section of the cable chain. And one of the earrings (pair value: $50) needed a post. That's it. The total? $165. Absolutely outrageous. Now I understand how they afford their Newbury Street rent. First and last time doing business with this merchant. You'd think that an antique jewelry shop on Newbury Street would be pretty stuffy, but that was NOT the case for this girl. My only disappointment was that I actually didn't find the right ring. I would have loved to give this shop my business. I don't know about all of the staff, but Jared and his female co-worker (forgot her name, sadly) were a delight to work with. I went in last week to look for antique engagement rings; not replicas, but estate jewelry. They had a lot of nice things on hand. When I showed interest in one sapphire ring, Jared said that it probably was too delicate for an engagement ring, but that he knew of another ring in another shop that would be more durable. So, he sent me a picture of that ring and then said he'd have it shipped to Boston with no obligation so I could look at it and try it on. I really wanted the ring to work, but alas, it just wasn't the one. The lady at the shop was totally understanding and took all of the pressure off. She then directed me to another couple of shops she knew of in DTXing that had estate jewelry. This was MOST helpful, because I thought I'd exhausted my search in the diamond district. Overpriced, and the repair job didn't last very long. They don't know how to deal with clip-on earrings, which are rare-ish but are not rocket science either. I've never paid so much to have the clips on clip-on earrings fixed. AND it took long, and longer than the store promised. (I had left three pairs to be repaired or tightened.) A friend recommended this place, and she said she had good service, but I doubt I'll ever go back there again. I have a little more time to search and I am going to see if any of the places in the Jewelers Exchange Building can help. Very disappointing. read more

Based on the recommendation of a friend whose engagement ring I adore, my now-fiancé and I hit up Small Pleasures when we started ring shopping last fall. Be forewarned the shop is tiny, but it is full of delightful little treasures. I had a feeling I would want to go vintage for an engagement ring, and I found a few here that I really did like. The people behind the counter were friendly and knowledgeable, and were happy to spend plenty of time while I tried things on and debated. I had my eye on a repro ring they had in stock, but we ended up buying an actual vintage version (and being able to choose our own stone) elsewhere (see my other reviews -- they also had a much wider selection), and for less money. Great vintage pieces and service, but definitely Newbury Street prices. Five for having cool and unique stuff, but three for high prices. read more

We were visiting from Austin, TX and needed to have a ring sized. They sized it for me, then mailed it to me in a few short days. Then, my mom saw my ring and wanted the same one. I was worried that Small Pleasures wouldn't have another one because their inventory is so unique, and I was right. But long story short, Kelly has been so great to track down the same ring, have it shipped to them, sized to fit my mom's finger, and mailed to me all within a couple of weeks. My partner and I came here looking for a vintage sapphire engagement ring. They had a small but nice collection of sapphire rings, but the ones I liked were way over our budget (which was to be expected with a 2 karat sapphire and a $3,000 budget). He found a gorgeous 1940s ring that was set with an aquamarine and a few sizes too small. The staff (who were wonderful by the way) had us come back to pick out a sapphire, had the ring re-set and sizes, and about a week later let us know it was ready. When I put it on, it was too tight andI was a little bummed it didn't fit, especially since they had measured me, but they measured me again, expedited the resizing order, and got it back to me in a few days, perfectly sized. And on top of all of that, they were willing to negotiate with me to keep the price under budget, and I love my ring. read more

Mean from the first minute I walked in! The owner rudely and reluctantly came over to help me when I brought in a diamond ring to see if she would want to buy from me for her inventory. She wanted to clean the diamond and when I asked if I could go with her while she cleaned because I knew someone who once had a diamond stolen while it was being cleaned, she exclaimed that she would never steal and then kicked me out of the store. I was shocked and felt awful that I had offended her but she wouldn't even look at me while I tried to say I just wanted to keep the over 3 carat family heirloom stone visible to me while she cleaned. What a horrible woman and horrible owner. Her over reaction makes me think maybe she isn't that honest. What an awful experience. read more

I've never bought anything here, but I've come in several times to browse. Their antique jewelry is GORGEOUS and is priced fairly for its quality. The staff is very helpful, friendly, knowledgeable. I also appreciate that they don't always steer you to the most expensive thing unnecessarily. Today I was in looking for a band to match my antique ruby engagement ring, and the man at the counter suggested something with yellow sapphires to coordinate (even though diamonds obviously would be more expensive...). Their price for a new micro-pave diamond eternity band--which I may be back for--was competitive. And even though today I was looking for a reasonably inexpensive (well, relatively speaking) wedding ring, the guy at the counter pulled out the cocktail ring with a five-carat diamond center stone that I had been admiring (without me asking), just for me to try it on. Obviously I wasn't about to buy it, but if I ever become filthy rich, I'll be back for all their awesome baubles! read more

Our wedding ring search took us to Fancy That, where both my fiance and I were really impressed with the beauty of the pieces available, at a wide range of prices. Without a doubt this store had more "estate-looking" new rings than we saw anywhere else, and lots of nice actual estate rings too. If you prefer your jewelry to have a bit of vintage flair, this could be the store for you! It's also the type of place in which you could wind up spending much more time than you anticipated, as there are so many interesting and beautiful little things to admire, and sales people who are knowledgeable and friendly and more than happy to be of help. I gave them a watch I was gifting my husband for our 1st year wedding anniversary (they confirmed they could give it back by the date needed) - they miscommunicated with their engraver who locked it in his safe and left for vacation (returning after my anniversary) so I was unable to give the watch to my husband on our anniversary.
