I brought my father's Swiss watch in to be repaired. There was a Calendar dial missing. Yurt said he would replace it for 200 (!). I said yes as long as he could get it going. It's of sentimental value. He called me telling me he found another calendar dial and had glued it into the window. It was too small and crooked. For $80!! It didn't cover the hole and it obviously can't move. He also broke my fathers watch band. I understand if it's not the kind of watch that he normally works on and he might've been trying to help but to charge as much money as he was charging and do a poor job isn't good business. read more

Needed a watch batter place now that the Watch Hospital is no more. Yuir's is a small shop (within a shop). He does his work right there. Was able to do battery replacement while I waited. The best place I've ever gone for watch repair. Honest, efficient and affordable, the three traits one can't always find at a watch repair shop. They are either too expensive or crooked. I walked in with my MK watch to get the batteries replaced. They fixed it within 10 minutes and charged me half the price the other repair shops (esp the ones in the malls) were charging me. The place is right on newburrey street so convenience is great. You can shop around if they are busy. The shop is cute and small. Yuri is the only watchmaker in Boston I'll take my 1920s-50s vintage watches to. I'm in his shop a few times each month for something. Speed? He's unbelievably fast, having several-times diagnosed strange issues with a timepiece in less time than it's taken me to describe the problem (not an exaggeration). I drop watches off at lunch and pick them up on my way home from work--usually he's already called me to tell me it's done before I get back to my office! I've only left a watch overnight twice and that's simply because parts needed to be ordered. Based on his clientele, and the watches I see on his bench, he's well-equipped to service all flavors of high end modern watches too, but for my obscure vintage collection, I haven't found anyone else in the Boston area I'd go to first. He cares about his craft, quality--and clearly has a rare passion for vintage pieces. For those in the area looking for a trustworthy source, he sells an enviable collection of vintage watches in his shop as well. I haven't purchased from him yet, but if he stands by his watches like he stands by his service, I wouldn't hesitate. Prices seem more than reasonable on his watches as well--certainly less than you'll find online. Speaking of price, I'm not sure what the folks complaining are talking about. I had a battery changed in my daughter's toy watch at a mall kiosk at the Pru that cost the same amount as he's charged me to custom make a part for an 80 year old movement. He's quite literally the best value you'll find for anything on Newbury Street. I've had to ask him to charge me SOMETHING for quick repairs before (he didn't). Full endorsement. read more

Probably fine if you have a quartz watch that needs the battery swapped. I took an automatic watch in to have the bracelet put back on the watch. I received my new watch back with several deep scratches to the end links of the bracelet. My fault in not stopping the man when he pulled what appeared to be a knife instead of a spring bar tool. I rolled in at 5:50pm as they were getting ready to close up (sorry to be that guy) and asked Yuri if he could take a quick look at it. 60 seconds later he handed it back to me and waived me off with a smirk in that eastern Europan endearing sort of way. Too expensive for bad service and an old battery. I had to give one star. I went to this place while ago and got my battery replaced. The old guy wasn't friendly. And few weeks later the watch died. He apparently put old battery! And it was also expensive. I had bad feeling when he was looking at my watch and told me this one cost more.... Rapid, quality work. Busted the band off of my old Seiko in a traumatic street soccer accident and decided that it was the perfect time to get the motion errors from a botched repair remedied as well. Previously had the watch assessed by the Swiss Watchmaker in Cambridge, and after a week, was informed that the repair would be more than the watch was worth. Imagine my surprise when Yuri offered to do the repair at $60 less, and would turn it over in a day. Sure enough, I got a call the next afternoon and was handed a sparklingly renovated watch, with links removed and adjusted for free on the spot. Of note, Yuri also sells beautiful vintage watches, painstakingly renovated. Worth a re-visit around Christmas. read more

This man is the best. I strolled in with a necklace that has a functioning timepiece at 12:45pm on a Saturday. He was bent over, working on someone's watch. Our entire conversation consisted of: Me: "I think this needs a new battery..." Him: "Hmmm...." (studies it with a magnifying scope) Him: "$10." Me: "Great." I was in Simple Pleasures for jewelry shopping when I discovered Yuri's little corner of the store dedicated to vintage watch sales and repair. GREAT I thought seeing that I had a beautiful heirloom Longines that had stopped working. I explained the situation to Yuri and asked if the watch would be worth repairing and he politely told me to bring it in. I did and he provided me with a $100 estimate for a complete cleaning and calibration. He kept to his estimate and his timeline and I recieved my beloved Longines in perfect working order! I was very pleased. He runs a very professional business and respects his craft. You can trust your most precious watch piece or clock with him in my view. I owe him another visit for needed repair of two unique vintage clocks. I know he is the one who can tackle them! Look out Yuri here I come. read more

Even after having moved to NYC I haven't found a jeweler I like quite as much as I do Yuri's. Heck, I even brought my watches all the way from NYC to Boston to get them fixed by Yuri when I was visiting for a weekend. The staff are always so polite, and greet you with a kind smile and a sweet, "Hello, how are you?" Yuri himself is a man of few words but he is as efficient as they come. Replacing a watch battery is $10 - can't really beat that considering this shop is in the middle of Boston. Update: Read Yuri's response. minus a star for rude, condescending remarks. ------ Original review: Went in with hopes of having a screw-in watch pin ($2.50 retail for replacement part) replaced for under $10. He wanted $15. I asked him if he was willing to come down on the price at all. He looked at me like I was crazy and said no. It's a 30-second job, so if I buy the part at retail price, I'm paying him a labor rate $1,500/hour to screw in a pin. Heck, throw in the cost of a professional watch repair tool, which I just found on Google for $1.94, and we're still not at $5. I get that you're allowed to be overpriced because it's Newbury Street. But that's triple what I got charged last fall at a shop in the suburbs. Even if you charge me Newbury Street rent prices for the 60 seconds I'm there, we're still not anywhere near $15 (even a $10k per month rent works out to about $0.20 per minute.) I went there because I was impatient and didn't feel like waiting for the part to arrive in the mail. Long story short, wasn't worth my time or money. I ended up ordering the part from Citizen & a watch tool. Did it myself. I went with 2-stars because Meh, I've experienced better. read more

When the battery on one of my watches failed, I switched to my other one and started looking for a watch shop to replace the battery. Unfortunately both of the places closest to me (Watch Shop at Porter Square and Swiss Watchmaker) have very mixed reviews (and that's putting it kindly). So I put off getting the battery replaced until the second watch's battery failed AND my boyfriend's watch battery died. Yesterday I took all three to Yuri, and he replaced the batteries for $10 each in no time flat. If I'd known it would be so easy I would have come in sooner! Even though it's out of the way, I'll definitely be coming here for all my watch needs from now on. I recall my coming to the store with my gold mechanical watch. When asked if he could make a repair Yuri was absolutely positive. After that, I had to come over a few times. Yuri told me the job is not only complicated but expensive, and preferred cash payment, $100. OK, the watch were very precious to me having mostly sentimental value. The guy accepted my money, and gave me my watch with one detail broken, take it or leave it. I was stuck, really. Since he already got the money he lost any interest to me, with all my disappointment, like 'what did you expect, it can't be fixed'. I would describe his behavior as inexcusable insulting rudeness. OK, I left the store with my unfixed watch and minus $100, and shared my experience with all my friends, as well as with Yelp. read more

I gambled and took a very high-end watch to Yuri for an overhaul based on some trusted reviews here in an effort to avoid the long wait and high cost of going to an authorized dealer. There was nothing wrong with the watch, it just needed some TLC since it's a manual wind that was about 9 years old and had never been cleaned or regulated. With these types of watches, you can pay a little now or a lot later. I opted for the former. Yuri quoted me a price of $140 and had it ready for me the next day - clean as a whistle and working perfectly. He is definitely a man of few words but it seems that he did a very good job. I plan on bringing some other watches to him in the near future. Highly recommended. read more

This place is awesome. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a man and a woman who were extremely friendly. I had a watch and it needed to be re-sized. As soon as I told them I needed my watch to be re-sized, they immediately pointed to the man sitting far left of the store. He re-sized my watch in about 5 mins. There are a few times, every once in a while, where my watch breaks. Yuri is one of the best in repairing it. When I entered, he was on the phone -- so I had a slight wait, nothing unbearable. When he was done, he took my watch (with needed its clasp repaired, nothing more), and expertly fixed it within a few seconds. When that didn't satisfy me, he took it back and re-repaired it. In all, ten minutes, at most, including phone call. The kicker? He did it for free. read more

Yuri might be good for changing batteries and adjusting watch bands, but in my opinion is not a master watch maker. As an analogy, he is good at changing oil and wiper blades on a Corolla, but I wouldn't bring him my Lexus for engine work. I brought in my $5k Tag (Yea, I know Tags s__k, but that's a different story) to Yuri because it was running fast. He told me no problem, he can fix it. He adjusted something and charged me $75. A week later I found the watch was still running fast, so I brought it back to him. He then told me that the watch needed an overhaul. Why didn't he tell me that the first time he tried adjusting it and charged me $75. I asked if he can deduct the $75 off the overhaul cost and he replied "No, he did his best the first time." So just wanting an accurate running watch again, I told him to go ahead and do the overhaul. Paid him $375, so a total of $475. After the overhaul, THE WATCH WAS STILL RUNNING FAST. A minute per day. Part of overhauling was calibrating, especially since I told Yuri I wanted the watch to be within COSC specs. Did he even time the watch before giving it back to me? I took the watch back to him and he adjusted something and gave it back to me. A week later the watch WAS STILL RUNNING FAST. I took the watch back to him a total of three times and he was not able to adjust it to even within 20 seconds per day. 20 seconds might be OK for a run of the mill automatic, but not a COSC Swiss watch. Finally I gave up and now I am out $475. Not only that, but now I find the watch doesn't even hack properly. When you pull the crown all the way out to stop the seconds hand, the hand will start moving again when you tap the watch even slightly. And no, the watch was not a 20 or 30 year old watch. It was less than three years old and since it was no longer covered under Tag's worthless warranty and since I didn't want to spend $500 for an authorized service repair, which was what I paid ultimately, I brought it to Yuri. Yuri - good for changing watch batteries, but I wouldn't trust him for REAL repair work. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE I called Yuri to check authenticity of this watch My girlfriend purchased. He said, "if it's not too much trouble, it won't cost you." When I went in to his store he looked at the watch and said $20 for the appraisal. I agreed. He popped opened the back of watch with something that looked like pliers and took LESS THAN A SECOND to do. He barely examines the watch and tells it authentic. THATS IT!!!!! $20!!!!! RIDICULOUS! I asked to punch an extra hole into the leather band. He didn't look to even line it properly. I had to scream to tell him to "STOP"! Then he realigned it and punch through the band. The final result was one hole, that was 1 mm off the series in band, and deep tear made from the first time he hole he tried to punch into the band. This wouldn't have happened if he was careful and NOT THIS SLOPPY. This is IRREPLACEABLE Hermes studded BAND. When I got home, my girlfriend was VERY UPSET. She examined the band and saw that there were a few deep scratches in the back of the watch where Yuri popped the back part open. SCRATCHES FROM JUST OPENING THE BACK UP. And there is an additional dent on the edge of the watch. He is NOT PROFESSIONAL. He shouldn't go near any fine watches. My girlfriend is upset and it has made my life miserable. I wish I had never gone to this store. DONT GO HERE. Don't be cheap and waste your money here. YOU WILL REGRET IT. If I could give negative stars on the rating I would. read more
