I stopped in today looking to buy myself a watch. I was greeted multiple times on the ground floor (where the jewelry is), but once I went upstairs to the watch area, I was completely ignored. I spent 15+ minutes looking around and not of the three salesmen milling around even bother to acknowledge my presence. Only after I mentioned that we were leaving and that I was disappointed that no one had even acknowledged me did one of the salesmen look at me... only to wave goodbye to me with a smug grin on his face. Avoid this place like the plague. Afterwards, I went to Rolex. I was greeted immediately, offered an Americano, and tried on numerous watches. I went there to have my watch battery replaced. Every staff member I saw greeted me warmly and did his/her/their best to assist me. Five stars out of five for the employees! I went to Shreve's on Newbury Street because my previous watchmaker went out of business after many years, and relatively few shops in the Back Bay are willing to replace watch batteries. It turns out that I had been completely spoiled by my previous watchmaker, who charged under $25.00 to replace a battery and completed the task in about 20 minutes while I waited. Alas, I fear that this excellent service model did not prove to be financially sustainable. At Shreve's, I dropped my watch off on a Monday, and was notified that it was ready on Thursday evening. The cost was $35.00. Perhaps this is the new normal. TL;DR: At Shreve's, the employees are charming and helpful. On the other hand, customers can expect a battery replacement to cost more and take much longer. read more

I had my engagement ring resized here (thinking they couldn't screw it up as a reputable jeweler??). Not only did it not fit after the first resize, but it didn't fit after a second resize either. So they resized my ring three times. Bonus - they also lost a small diamond from my band and got some black substance stuck under another small diamond on my band. Now I have a screwed up ring and need to go to a new jeweler to get my ring fixed, and also appraised to make sure they didn't screw up my large stone. Ugh. A beautiful store that has a wonderful selection of watches. The knowledge of the sales staff ranges from good to outstanding, but the decision making doesn't happen at their level: producing a divide in service. There is an apparent lack of management on the floor which means the sales staff have to sua sponte. Staff do address concerns, yet if something is defective with your purchase, they do not take ultimate responsibility: this was clear through two of my purchases as each they admitted there was. You must take it upon yourself to continue to follow-up in this situation, and once you stop, they act like nothing is wrong. If you want to trade in towards another watch, you can, as long as you are willing to endure as they devalue the very watch you recently bought from them to half of the purchase value. This type of service stems from another problem, greed. Unfortunately for them, I am not a kid in a candy store, and I no longer wish to stand-by as they dissolve thousands and thousands of dollars of my watches until I can only afford their cheapest watch. I wish them the best of luck in their sales approach as the watch industry shifts to direct factory purchase in response to the internet underselling watches. read more

This is a follow-up to my previous post. After roughly a week, I finally was contacted by Louis. He reported that he had in fact ordered a custom-made strap for me. The problem is that he initially told me he would get back to me "in a few days" prior to placing the order to discuss the various options available, either getting the strap from JLC or another vendor. This he did not do. So I was left with the impression that nothing was being done. Thus, my only complaint at this point is sporadic and inconsistent communication, i.e., not returning calls or keeping the customer informed of the latest developments. As I wrote above, the sales experience was good. I just wish there was better communication. read more

It is very rare, today, where a person can develop a personal relationship with a jeweler over time. My ex wife and I, and now just good old me, have had and will have that with Shreve, Crump, and Low. I have only experienced this level of courtesy at a jeweler once before, and that was at Oscar Heyman. From the knowledge the staff had, to the lovely greeting by store security, I felt welcomed and valued. Niresh Rajpersad is a gentleman of the old school. His knowledge, and graciousness are par excellence. I was with a friend who was helping me with engeament rings... And he allowed her to try on each piece, even the ones 100 times out of my price range. I have also been into the shop to buy my daughter her first necklace. I was treated like royalty while I was there... Tiffany and Cartier treated me like garbage that same day. So it goes without saying, Boston is lucky to have Shreve, Crump, and Low! read more

Came here for the first time this week and left fairly disappointed. This may have been partially my fault, as my expectations were set fairly high for Shreve Crump and Low, as my only knowledge of it was that it was one of Boston's oldest jewelers and that it occupied the most expensive "space" on the Boston edition of Monopoly. But anyway, I came in to inquire about trading in a brand new watch (tags and everything still on it, warranty card, full kit) to trade up for a nicer model (I wanted to see if they'd provide me with some sort of deal rather than returning the watch within it's return window). Prices: As this is one of the most important aspects of watch shopping their prices were very much on the higher end, even when compared to other authorized dealers and not just gray market ones. For example the watch I brought in retailed at 4900, was on sale for 4750 at their shop, yet they told me it was selling for 3500 at other dealers. I won't even say how much ridiculously lower they offered me for a watch still wrapped in it's plastic with it's tags on, but I obviously declined as I'd get much more back just returning my watch. I decided to do the due diligence on the watch I was looking at switching it for, which was listed for 5700 at Shreve Crump and Low. Lo and behold, it was being sold by other ADs for as low as 4200! I can definitely say I'll be buying it there instead. Customer service: This was hit or miss. The people I talked to were all very nice, and friendly but also seemed to use "car dealership tactics" that, for me anyways, were very easy to see through. Very different than the customer service I've experienced at other high end clothing boutiques and watch shops. They were fairly pushy for me to try on other watches I had no interest in, but that they obviously wanted to move. I came in with the picture of the watch I wanted to look at, but was nudged into trying about half a dozen more LOL, even ones that were the same size as the watch I was trying to get rid of for being too large! Ones that didn't fit my water resistance levels I was looking for, etc ... I'm glad they didn't ask me about my favorite brand, because they missed out on a chance of bringing a bunch of other watches out that at least had a chance at tempting me. As I mentioned before, the severe low ball on the brand new watch was a bit shocking, but they have a business to run and make money. No harm there as it's very easy to walk away from the offer. I just wish when I had called and detailed exactly everything about the watch and just asked for a ballpark that they'd have told me and not made me come in. Again, overall not terrible customer service. Just not what I'd expect when going into a high end boutique. Decor/ambience: Upon seeing the outside of the store I was expecting a luxurious jewelry/watch store. Maybe not along the lines of the Cartier Mansion in Manhattan, but closer to the Cartier right across the street on Newbury. Instead it felt like walking into a regular jeweler that just happened to have very high end pieces on display. Again it wasn't bad, just quite below my expectations. Overall won't be returning due to prices ($1500 is quite a big difference for the same watch carrying the mfgers full warranty), and if I do go to another shop in person again, I had a much better experience shopping at Cartier and even Torneau (in Copley). read more

Two months ago I brought in a watch for service. I was initially led to believe the cleaning would take place there in the store, but subsequently found out it was sent back to the manufacturer. Over this time I have been repeatedly told that I will receive a call back. Initially it was 2 weeks from when I dropped it off. Then when I've called in to find out what was happening, if I left a message I'd be told I'd get a return call right away. I was told I'd be called with the manufacturer had an estimate and a time for completing the task. In NO instance have I EVER received a returned phone call; I only get information when I repeatedly call until someone gives me an answer. Can they be serious about customer service? A store like this should be all over making me happy. read more

I had a really bad experience with this store. I don't understand how this place still gets positive reviews. I bought a rubber strap and a buckle for my Omega planet ocean seamaster watch on the 10th of July. I want to also mention that they told me that the buckle will arrive in one week and it took three weeks for it to arrive. Nobody called me back and I had to repeatedly call them back and ask what is going on. When I got home after getting the buckle on that day I realized that the omega emblem on the buckle was not mounted properly at the right place and it was moving. I went back to the store immediately the day after and requested a replacement. They told me that the buckle has suffered physical damage. I politely explained that this is not true as I have just gotten the new buckle yesterday and did not hit the watch anywhere or something. They were unwilling to give me refund and told me Omega would not be willing to replace the buckle. After exerting a lot of pressure on them they contacted Omega and they told me that Omega cannot replace the buckle and if I want I can try contacting them by myself. If you are not a customer that they know and spending tons of money buying jewelry from them expect to be mistreated. read more

The staff were rude to the point of humiliation. I walked in with my fianceé to look for a wedding band and was told that someone would be with me shortly. We were then ignored for almost half an hour until finally we left. There were 4 salespeople in the room the entire time, with two of them helping one customer for most of it. Clearly I didn't look like a high enough commission. The irony? I bought the engagement ring at Shreve. I'm already a customer - or I was. Stay away; there are half a dozen stores on this street who will treat you with respect and have just as high a quality product. read more

Rip off alert! Do not bring your watch in for service. Brought my father's Blancpain in for service. (Not my watch so I did not know how it functions. I thought it was broken) The service personnel confirmed it was broke. A week later, she called me to say that their tech confirmed it was broken and without my permission, already sent it to Blancpain. Two weeks later, I got a call from service and she sounded like a used car salesman from a corrupt 3rd World country. She told me that the watch needs a full overhaul and a new crystal because it is worn out. Total? Nearly $1,800... but since I agreed to fix it for my father, i nearly just wrote the check... Until I took the watch a few blocks over on a hunch. The guy there took one look at it and asked "why are you here?" I explained the whole scenario and and he offered to bench test it... Even the band is nearly new. He told me that the watch is so exact, I could probably sell the movement as new. (My father wore it less than a handful of times in 15 years) I went back to Shreve and nobody had anything to say, blaming it on whomever was not there at the time. It felt like I was dealing with a fake Rolex dealer in some shady alley in Hong Kong. What crooks! read more

I whole-heartedly believe that this is the sort of place where if you don't own a Maserati and use money for toilet paper, you are not of interest to them. I felt very much like Julia Roberts on Rodeo Drive in Pretty Woman. And seeing as though my Maserati is the MBTA and my toilet paper is the private label Scott brand knock-off, this place left me walking away, feeling like the dregs of society, because that's how I was treated. I walked in here today around 1:30 PM. That's not peak lunch hour or anything, but yet I was still ignored. Walked in the front door, no one acknowledged me. Walked around the right side at first, looking for silver bracelet chains, and the thick gauge chunky bracelet that could be used to hold an engraved charm. Slooowwwly circled all the way around, looking at every case, CLEARLY looking for something specific. Got around the back left side, and luckily stumbled on the silver charm bracelet section. Stood there, squatted down to look inside the case from the front. Looked around for help. Lots of people ignoring me. Then leaned on the top of the case to try to view some of the jewelery and prices (since no one was showing me) (think Kit De Luca in Pretty Woman when she leans over and breathes fog onto the glass). Stood there, waaaaiting for someone to acknowldge me. I generally call out "Is anyone able to help me over here?" and a man slowly comes over. He shows me some things, and I had a few questions about pricing for engraving (extraordinarily expensive, something like $25 for the first three letters, and a few bucks more for each additional letters), but he didn't even really know for sure. He just seemed completely disinterested in showing me things, was lethargic, and didn't inspire me to be a potential customer. He also seemed like he was moving purposefully slow. It was a miserable experience. I was wearing my usual jeans, sneakers, North Face Denali Fleece and North Face backpack. Do I look sketchy? Do I look too young to make a purchase? (I do look young). Was because I was looking at charm jewelery (for a 9 year old) did that me a low value customer and not worthy of attention? I mean, I have a nice ring (That I got from Long's which treats me with respect) on that shows I'm not some teenybopper. Does someone have to get all dolled up to check out jewelery? I've been looking at many stores for this exact item. I went to Tiffany's at Copley and was treated with amazing respect even though I showed my surprise at how their charm chains have skyrocketed in price (I have my own, the price has gone WAY up). I'll never EVER come here again. Try Long's downtown, and talk to David, the store manager. Tell him I sent you. I have 3 diamond rings and I love them and I get so many compliments.... and you'll get the best combination of service and price out there. read more

After being treated quite rudely here about 7 years ago, I decided to give SCL a second chance, thinking I couldn't possibly have the same bad experience twice. So, on a gorgeous Labor Day Sunday, I stopped in for a look at some diamond studs. I was in a perfect mood for diamond shopping -- what could go wrong? Unfortunately, first impressions are sometimes dead on. Within a minute of stepping into the store, I was re-living the same disinterest and impoliteness that attended my earlier experience, this time with SCL's diamond buyer, Stefan D. He spent most of his time ignoring my requests to move on to another display case of earrings, and chastising me for re-attaching earring backs after trying on studs (because he couldn't be bothered to separate them again to insert into his display unit). Every pair I tried on went right back into the case, so a comparison was not possible -- and I was rushed through the collection so quickly that I almost laughed at how bad the service was. I walked out with my old pair of studs, which had been an absolute pleasure to buy at Lux Bond. You can find designs, settings, and stones just as lovely elsewhere -- why suffer impertinent SCL sales associates and spoil what otherwise should be a wonderful and fun experience? read more

My brother wanted a pocketknife for Christmas. I got him a cheapie he could beat up (purchased at the army navy store), but wanted to make sure he had a fancy one as well. I wandered up and down Newbury St. and Downtown Crossing with no luck. Finally, I came upon the formerly intimidating Shreve Crump & Low and decided to walk in, just to see how much trouble I could get myself into. One hour later I was picking up a sterling silver pocketknife engraved with our family name for a very reasonable price. I wasn't even the one receiving the gift, but was so excited that I had scored such a treasure for my brother. We grew up together quite poor, but now he'll have a future family heirloom from a classy, 200 year-old Boston retailer. Salesperson Mary was thrilled to help me out my despite my modest budget. I never felt the least bit out of place. After the sale we both looked out their amazing window display at the fresh snow on the Back Bay trees and agreed that Boston is exceptionally beautiful at Christmastime. I just had the best, quickie ever with SC&L. Called earlier today to see if they clean jewelry and Brett (?) said 'sure, come on in and I'd be happy to take a look!' I walked in sort of looking like a bag lady, sweaty from the nice brisk walk and carrying pretty expensive jewelry in an old Tiffany's bag. Brett welcomed me in the store (despite my haggard appearance) and gave me recommendations as to which pieces he could clean right there and which pieces I should go back to the original dealer. He took them in another room and returned 5 minutes later with my newly-cleaned and shiny diamonds. So exciting! What's better than sparking diamonds? The $0 Brett accepted for the cleaning. I came in to get a watch battery replaced. I called in first and the rep was very courteous, quoted me $15 and told me the best time to stop by. Pretty good price for "while you wait" battery replacement. I've had to pay $20 and wait 1-2 days at other places and felt like the price was hiked because of the brand of the watch I brought in. The battery change only took 10 min and they included a complimentary cleaning of my rings. The store has a department-store feel, the staff offer to help at every turn. I especially love that they specialize in precious stones! And their stones are one of a kind, foraged from all over the world. Unlike other jewelers that often manufacture their jewelry. My fiancé and I went to a few jewelry stores before being referred to Shreve. We couldn't be happier. T's reaction to the jewel covered chocolates I just fed him reminded me that I completely forgot to review SCL - which, admittedly, I initially held off doing b/c it's a bit absurd that I was in here in the first place (by a bit I mean VERY) - but at the end of the day, I was really thrilled with the experience and if I've learned anything this year, it's that in addition to treating others, I also have to treat myself - and as I look at the bauble that flirtily sparkles at me from its perch on my index finger, treat myself I did. Let me back up - prior to starting medical school I had an actual job - and, like any reasonable adult saddled w guilt abt the rising costs of life, I started a Roth IRA....but I also squirreled away savings in a rainy day fund - I had no express purpose in mind, but I just knew that I'd want monies to travel/be silly/something - and although I'm not a huge gaudy jewelry person (plain gold wedding band for me, thank you very much), a few years ago I started to want a "right hand ring" - but, I'm a total commitment-phobe when it comes to huge decisions (see: spiral of panic that my first car purchase sent me into) - so it wasn't until a few months ago that I got ready to pull trigger and knew that it was time to release my rainy day fund into the wild. For as much game as I talk, I'm actually kind of embarrassed going into situations like this, so I brought my GF, ELE, who is a total pro at all things fancy - and despite the fact that we were two late 20-somethings strolling into a jewelry store where the average purchase is somewhat larger than...idk...most things that someone my age usually buys....we got zero attitude - everyone was kind, welcoming, and friendly. Our darling guide was Brad - never once did he push me above my budget - and he was willing to be creative and listen to what I thought I wanted (which was "nothing that looks like an engagement ring - and no pink diamonds b/c that shizz is TAF) - furthermore, he got total brownie points w E when he invited us back into the safe to look at the insane collection of jewels they have - in short, it didn't matter whether I was spending $5k or $500k, they actually treated me like they valued my business - and more importantly, I can't tell you how many compliments I've gotten on the piece that I chose. Oh, and to loop back to the beginning, on our way out they gave E and I bags filled with SCL chocolates, wrappers decorated w a host of massive rocks, for both our noshing and viewing pleasure. Overall, if you're looking to drop dollars on things that sparkle or go tick-tock, this is absolutely the place to do it. If you can afford to do so, I wouldn't look anywhere else. read more

My partner and I were looking for an engagement ring, and we found good service, prices, settings and stones and Shreve's. We did a lot of comparison shopping and found Kay Jeweler's at Cambridgeside Galleria to be pricier for equivalent quality (which surprised us), and Tiffany's to be gaudy design and super-expensive. The Shreve ring that we bought is beautiful- subtle setting of the stone that highlights its quality without screaming 'look at me I have a huge horkin' rawk on my finger'. Actually, its around her wrist- a perfect fit for my kittykat girlfriend, whose wrist is about a size 9 finger. Anyway- if you think the name/location equals snooty and overpriced like we did, its not the case. You can get overpriced anywhere, it seems. read more

Despite its obvious merits, I give this place a low rating because I was treated extremely rudely by two of the sales agents. I brought in an Audemars Piguet ROO, (which I'd had serviced there before) to look at their selection of watches and discuss a possible trade-in toward the value of another piece. When I asked about its trade-in value and showed it to the salesman, he handed it back to me and told me it was a fake. I told him, in the most polite manner, that he was sorely mistaken, at which point he gave it to an associate of his who verified that it was in fact genuine. He did not even try to apologize. Their selection had nothing that interested me, but I was no longer interested in doing business with this store. To be fair, most of the associates I have dealt with at this location were perfectly polite, but the two that were rude were sufficiently so enough to sour me on the idea of coming back here. There's no reason to be insulting customers by insinuating that they are trying to pass of counterfeit merchandise, and there are better places to shop. read more

I was ready to start seriously looking at engagement rings to propose to my (now) fiance, so I emailed Jennifer to see if she would be able to help me. I knew that I wanted a rose gold diamond ring, and asked her if she could share any inventory that she had. She responded promptly with three different options and, after a few emails, we decided to meet in person at the Back Bay location. Jennifer was such a dream! I went in there not knowing exactly what I was looking for, but she showed me a beautiful ring that I knew was perfect for one of the most important decisions in my life to date. She took great care in learning about me and, though she hadn't met her, my partner. She asked me so many thoughtful questions and joined in my excitement about the upcoming proposal.
