A visit to Smallcakes never disappoints! Our family favorites are red velvet, wedding cake, carrot, and vanilla chocolate. The special holiday flavors are equally good. When I visit, I try to go earlier in the day as they can possibly run out of my favorites around closing time. Although the cupcakes here have a lot more frosting than I prefer, the cake part is always extremely moist and fresh. I have tried several flavors of Smallcakes and never tasted one I did not like yet. I love that you can order ahead for parties or pick up a special "pup cake" for your four-legged babies. After eating at a nearby restaurant, my husband and I went to Smallcakes for dessert. They had a large selection of cupcakes to pick from. They also have ice cream. You can get ice cream scoops or combine the ice cream with a cupcake and make a milkshake out of it. We picked the chocolaholic and mango coconut cupcakes. The chocolaholic was delicious with a chocolate cake base, chocolate frosting, and chocolate curls on top. The mango coconut cupcake was very disappointing. There was very little mango or coconut flavor in the cupcake. Smallcakes got one of two cupcakes right but did not want to make me go back for more. read more

I absolutely love the cupcake smash concept- being able to put ice cream and cupcake into a concoction. However, the cupcakes were too soft and crumbly in my opinion- I like the denser Molly's version. I liked the cream cheese icing on my peanut butter chocolate cupcake though and loved the pumpkin ice cream and snickers ice cream. I ordered the red velvet cupcake and would much rather spend my money at Nothing Bundt Cakes. For maybe $1.00 more - you get a much larger portion and definitely a better tasting cake. I also requested a taste test of three different flavors of ice cream before settling on the cookie dough. Again, it was just ok. I actually prefer the cookie dough ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. It is a waste of time to visit this Smallcakes as they are often closed during their normal business hours. Ok so I don't like cake that much when it comes to favorite desserts, BUT I think this place has changed my mind! I tried two after a treat of dinner out at a restaurant, so thought I'd try this nearby place and get something to go for later in the night. I got the carrot cake cupcake and the wedding cake cupcake(almond flavored). I can tell you I thought I'd try a taste on the way home of the wedding cake and it was consumed happily before I even got home. It was light and flavorful and sweet without being overly so, and not too oily like some cupcakes. Later that night I had to taste the carrot cake too. Made a little piggy of myself, yes. The carrot cake was more substantial in flavor and also very good, just totally different(as it should be.) Needless to say the calories were in overload that day, but totally worth it. After buying very expensive premium cupcakes in the city (which weren't even that big, or even executed perfectly), I was glad to find Smallcakes in South Barrington which provides generously sized premium cupcakes at only a fraction of the price. This shop is beautifully decorated from wall to wall, display case to display case with plenty of delicious, artistically crafted cupcakes. They are definitely not cheap, but are actually pretty low priced for items of this quality (consider a small Magnolia cupcake runs you $5.50, or a scoop of Oberweis ice cream $3.29, or one of Firecakes or Stan's Donuts is about $3). Service is quick, friendly, and the staff is knowledgeable about the product. On this visit, I tried 3 items: Vanilla bean ice cream - Extremely creamy, with a nice bright vanilla bean flavor. There's an interesting almost gummy texture to it, which I wasn't certain if I was a huge fan of -- almost like gelato but even thicker. Still, this was quite enjoyable with the cupcakes. Hot fudge sundae cupcake - Very moist chocolate cupcake with a buttery butter cream frosting on top (although this very impressively fooled me by looking exactly like a topping of fresh whipped cream). High quality nuts added a good savory aspect and a bit of texture contrast. Pink vanilla cupcake - Insanely buttery cake topped with an insanely buttery, yet fluffy cloud of frosting. The pink sugar added a nice crunchy element to this cupcake. I'm not entirely certain of what was in the pink buttercream, but it was delicious. Overall, pleasant experience with beautiful food (although it was slightly on the sweet side for me, but I can understand how this would appeal to a wide audience). read more

We have stopped in here a couple of times, and have always been happy with anything we get. We were looking for something a little special so we drove over and got 4 cupcakes. The selection does vary (specials) but their core seems to remain consistent. This time I got the Cookies and Cream, which I have had before and its really great and the Boston Cream Pie. The cookies and cream is a chocolate cupcake with oreo frosting, the Boston was filled with pastry cream and topped with ganache. Very good as well, My wife always gets the Chocolate Peanut butter and got the Hot Fudge Sundae. Came here about 2 weeks ago with my sisters because we had heard good things about this place. I thought it was going to be just cupcakes but they also had ice cream, a cupcake shake and some filled cookies. We ended up getting a scoop of the peanut butter and chocolate ice cream as well as 4 cupcakes. The ice cream was very tasty but I didn't really enjoy the consistency. It was very thick and almost stretchy? Not sure but we kept eating it because the flavor was nice I just wish it was more creamy and smooth than thick. My first taste of Smallcakes was when I was offered a choice out of a big box of cupcakes for my (2016) birthday at work. I picked one that looked like a Hostess cupcake -- chocolate with that swirly white frosting over the fudgey icing. It was delicious -- so moist (ick, did I seriously just type that word ..... blech) and a delicious creamy filling. My second taste - was for my next (2017) birthday at work. This time I selected a cupcake that had a caramel-y colored frosting with a dash of salt and a pretzel stuck in the top. Again .... moist cake, great flavor. After that, I figured I had to try more. So I've popped in a few times since then. Mostly, they keep sucking me in by posting photos of these delicious creatures on facebook. Seriously people..... the power of social media! Surprisingly, Smallcakes isn't just cupcakes - they have ice cream, too! So I finally decided on Peanut Butter Cup (so rich & delicous), Chocolate Cream (looked & tasted just like a Hostess cupcake, cream filled and all), Caramel Crunch (still tasty but perhaps my least favorite of the bunch), and Cookies N Cream (loved all the flavors!) Each day they have a couple of specials and I couldn't resist either one. One was fruit tart which was topped with blueberries & strawberries - so red, white & blue patriotic! The other was the Kitchen Sink which was loaded with a bit of everything. A bit of a coconut overload for me! I called last Friday with a last minute request for cupcakes for a baby shower. The staff was very friendly and helpful, they did explain that it is last minute and they will limited on decorations which i understand. but let me tell you if what I had was limited then I am excited to see what they can do with enough notice time! The gal had shown me the cupcakes in he store and put the 3 boxes in a bag. The bag remained upright in the car. When I opened the boxes to show my family, all the cupcakes were turned over and the holder was smashed down. I had to fix the cupcakes, but unfortunately they don't look great. I didn't think to take a picture until the last box. Since this was for an event the next day, I was pretty upset the cupcakes didn't stay upright. Out of this world, deliciously moist cupcakes!!! I don't like all that fancy-schmancy b.s. - i got a basic, vanilla/vanilla cupcake, two nights ago, and i have been craving another one ever since. It was to die for. Not only was it super-moist, the way a cake should be, but the flavor stands out above the rest. Absolutely delicious. Unfortunately for my waistline, i have no doubt this will become a staple-item when i hit up the iPic (which is how i happened across this place). It's located just kiddie-corner to the iPic. For our wedding, we had a cupcake tower instead of a wedding cake. We were able to have five different flavors for our guests to pick and choose. All cupcakes were delivered and made on the same day. I was in need of some cupcakes to take to a party and this place fit the bill in lovely fashion. I typed in cupcakes into my trusty Yelp app and this was the first result that popped up and looked promising. I am honestly not a big fan of the shops at the Arboretum as its always busy and can be a bit of a maze, but Smallcakes was easy enough to find. It's located in the same little alcove as the iPic. This works out well since there is far more parking near the iPic than there tends to be adjacent to most of the other shops. The girl behind the counter when I walked in the door was a total sweetheart and greeted me immediately. The cases containing the cupcakes are front and center right in your grill when you walk in the door, and are close to eye level to add to the enticement. She gave me the rundown of the various different varieties as well as their current featured cupcakes. Prices here are pretty steep. You can drop close to 40 bucks for a dozen, so just something to keep in mind. I also decided to grab an ice cream to go, since I was wanting something to munch on while I was on my way to the party. Smallcakes will allow you to try any of their ice cream flavors with little plastic spoons. The mint chocolate chip was to friggin die for. As soon as I tried it the alarm bells went off. Really thick and outstanding flavor. I was praying for red lights the whole drive to my party so I could scoop more of it into my salivating mouth. The packaging that the store wraps the cupcakes in is quite adorable and presents well, though as a guy I sort of felt like I was on my way to a Barbie party with it riding shotgun in the front seat. I got to sample both the salted caramel as well as the Oreo cupcakes, and both were quite good, just VERY rich and loaded down with a ton of frosting. Suffice it to say that my palate is pretty much bulletproof when it comes to food like this, so if I think it has too much frosting, I would say it's safe to assume it would be overwhelming for about 99% of the population out there. Christian and Cristina reached out to me via email. I replied to them promptly and they asked me to come in and give them an opportunity to make my previous order right. Long story short, I came in and they more than kindly comped me 6 more cupcakes. I chose 2 red velvet and 4 of whatever they recommend (sorry I forgot the other 4). I remember having the mudslide as soon as I got home and it was outstanding. I kept the others in a food saver container (highly recommend) at room temperature. I've had 3 more the last 2 days and the next were just as good if not better than the first. First of all, I wasn't looking for anything from Smallcakes but they made this situation more than right. What a great experience! I had to pick up multiple cupcakes but separate them into different boxes and transactions. Not only was the woman behind the counter patient and kind, she also helped me make the most of my order so I could enjoy a cupcake to myself on the house!
