I ordered through door dash out of curiosity. Two cakes in a jar were of interest to me and one I planned to bring as a little gift for my spouse when I fly home tomorrow. I taste tested the two I thought looked good. I really love German chocolate cake on a good day. It did not disappoint. The second, wedding cake, tasted phenomenal on the very first bite. The frosting reminded me of marzipan. The problem is that I'm a super taster. There was a bitter aftertaste after a couple of bites. The whole bitter almonds thing. I know my spouse will eat it as they are not as sensitive, and almond is the flavor of their people. As my cousin is in town, I'm going to order a couple more to take home to California and we can jar cake taste test to taste the variety. This was really fun and the cakes made a great gift to take home. P.S. The carrot cake has the perfect cream cheese frosting to cake ratio. I'm taking two chocolate jars and will report back. My family and I stopped in looking to get our dessert fix. We have visited two other SmallCakes locations in Orlando and were excited to see a location here in NC. The selection varied from what we were used to and the woman explained that they are franchised, so each location can vary in what items they have. The frosting tasted the same as in the other locations and the cupcakes still seemed standard. We like to get cookie sandwiches and brownies, though. They did have a brownie, but it was just ok. The woman behind the counter was very sweet and offered to make us the cookie sandwich, as she only had one left. Very nice service! If you are a cupcake fan, then you will def need to give this place a try! :) read more

This place is addictive! First of all, Customer Service is unmatched. I asked a LOT of questions & the server was so polite, and KNOWS the product. (which was very refreshing) I went in a Monday and got the Fudge Sunday flavor of the day and it tasted just like a fudge sundae and even had me wondering if there was a way to freeze it and indulge! The baker that ran the register was really sweet and got me signed up with rewards for this location. Being new to the area, and never trying small cakes, I picked a few options and raved about this place to others. This is really going to be one of those places where I will have to pace myself because honestly I want to try ALL the small cakes! They have homemade ice cream and cakes in mason jars. You will have to decide for yourself if their treats are worth the premium price, but having visited Smallcakes, I can tell you that these three things are true: First, they had quite a reasonable amount of folks in and out on this Tuesday, on the second day of spring. Additionally, people were willing to part with four dollars per cupcake and nearly $15.50 for four. That's not cheap, so they must be doing something right. Finally, the vast array of choices means that everyone can get exactly what they like. They had wedding cakes, sundae cupcakes, brownies and even cannolis. These are hands down the best cupcakes in Charlotte!!!!! It's the perfect ratio of cupcake to frosting and the frosting is not overly too sweet. I have already visited the Huntersville location, but this was my first time at the University location. They had a wide variety of cupcakes, some cake pops, cupcakes in a jar, and even ice cream. The cupcakes were fresh and totally delicious that I ordered- vanilla strawberry and wedding which is an almond flavored cupcake. Happiest of Anniversary to my favorite sweets shop. I love this place as I have been coming to see them since they opened. Whenever my work family has a birthday...they get an awesome cupcake from Smallcakes Utopia. Everytime I come they are loaded with smiles and suggestions on things to try. They even asked me if I wanted my usual Today I walked in, there was a little girl and her little girl and thr mother was asking tons of questions like are the cupcakes baked daily, how long are they out before you refresh them and what do you do with the ones that you don't sell. And in true Smallcakes fashion the lady behind the counter answered every question joyfully. When she told the lady that they donate the leftovers, the lady with the little girl in the cute unicorn headband smiled and said oh you donate them just like Paneras does. The staff is pretty patient as you decide on your preference. There are various flavors of each item. I'm not a big cupcake person but I really enjoyed the red velvet cupcake in a jar and birthday cake cupcake. But the real steal of the show for me has been the original Rice Krispie treat - gooey and delicious. Also liked their red velvet cookie. I haven't tried their ice cream but it's next on the list. And nothing I've tried has been overly sweet, which is much appreciated. So I had these small cakes today at an event. So my review is strictly about the cake and not the experience I had at the store. Since I am a Plain Jane, I opted for the vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream icing. Ok, when I bit into this cake, my eyes rolled in the back on head. I have NEVER had a cake so moist...it just melted in my mouth. I had to pull out the fork because I knew it would fall all over me as it was so pillowy soft. And then the icing...it was decorated in a nice pink color, there wasn't a huge mound of it, and it was not overly sweet. Most times when I have a cupcake, I end up not eating all of the icing because its so sweet and there is so much. I ate this entire cake including all of the icing. We were in the area with the kids and decided this would be a nice little treat for them. I did a quick yelp check - as I do - and saw pretty decent reviews. When I walked in I was surprised by the size of the cupcakes. They're pretty big and the flavors looked so fun! I ordered birthday cake, holy cannoli, and eggnog cheesecake. The kids had the birthday cake and loved it. My husband and I split the other 2. Eggnog cheesecake was definitely my favorite. Cannoli was pretty good too, but I could only handle but so much. While I have a huge sweet tooth, I also dont like things too sweet. The buttercream was very sweet and I think with the cannoli cream was a bit much (for me) and clashed a tiny bit. But I'm not a big fan of frosting and that has little to do with the quality of these cupcakes. I was impressed when I cut the cupcake and found it to be super moist. That's a must for me.
