Let me start by saying, I have never written a yelp review in my life. Honestly, I really only use it to look at pictures to scope out possible brunch locations. However, this particular store has inspired me. It must be destroyed. This place is the grocery store equivalent of the seventh layer of hell. Either that, or it's everyone's last stop shop for groceries before the apocalypse. There are abandoned carts haphazardly strewn across aisles (left for hours, by the way), and their shelves are always shockingly bare of necessity items. Either everyone in San Luis is stocking up on 2% milk before the rapture, or no one bothers to stock them. The automatic sliding door, if you can call it that, is half broken. You can hear it slowly screeching open from the parking lot like some strange haunting omen of what awaits you inside. Since it is the closest grocery store to my house, I had to make a trip there today to pick up some ingredients for dinner. First stop, vegetables. We all know those thin, green plastic bags that you satisfyingly rip off the giant reels to store your produce in. Every grocery store has them, and I used to think that they were all exactly the same, bought at some grocery chain supply store. Apparently, I was wrong because the bags at this establishment, are half the size. So any tall vegetable you want to purchase, sticks out the top and flops around awkwardly. So if you're looking to pick up some celery, or asparagus, or green onions (etc.) get ready for the green, leafy tops of those delicious vegetables to be contaminated with god knows what germs are lurking at the bottom of your grocery cart. Coming to terms with this, I carried my green onions. After that I had to give up on the maybe 12 avocados they even had, because they were all hard as rocks. Next I wandered over the red onions, maneuvering my way around the maze of unwanted carts. As I approached, I realized that most, if not all, of them were extremely old and starting to rot. As I got closer and started to reach my hand towards them, a small plume of fruit flies rose off of their sad, dying onion corpses and hung stagnant in the air. At that point, I put down my one item and walked out. I only made it to ONE ITEM. I didn't even make it past produce, and it's right past the front door! Now, I know what you're thinking. Maybe I'm being stuck up, or too harsh. Maybe they were having an off day. Maybe they lost another shitty college kid employee to a night of heavy drinking. BUT NO. I have been in this store more times than I can count because, as I said, it is (most unfortunately) the closest one to my house. I could go on and on and on, but I won't because I doubt most of you have even made it through this rant. But if you have, I implore you.....spread the word.....join the cause......put an end to this madness. read more

I think I am done shopping at Smart & Final in Arroyo Grande. Today I asked the checker why another customer was standing near me with her wallet out and her groceries on the conveyor. I had waited in line until "the voice" told me to go to check stand so-in-so. But this woman was obviously entitled not to follow the current COVID rules. The checker said that management has instructed them to get customers through as fast as possible, so that lady "joining us" was no big deal. He said this as he continuously had to look up prices of produce. Duh. He bagged my groceries and put fresh meat in with fresh produce. Smart & Final's management should be ashamed - after painting all those feet and words on their floors - to not expect customers to use them OR EMPLOYEES TO ENFORCE THEM! Bye bye S&F. read more

Maybe the people going before had super high standards, or the management actually looked at the review, but this store is far from bad. The prices are much better on some items than other stores in slo, never have I seen both chicken and eggs that cheap at the same time. The service is ok, not rude, but not overly cheerful either. This dosent warrant losing more than one star though, it is after all a grocery store, not a dine in restaurant. read more

I love this place. They actually care about their customers. I have an auto immune disorder and some asshole lady refused to put a mask on while I was shopping there. Luckily the store refused her and made her leave ! Thank you so much so keeping all the other shopper safe. This is my go to spot. And they have delicious rotisserie chicken! read more

This store is a complete disappointment. Forget about shopping here on a Sunday or Monday, because the shelves are always empty. How hard is it to properly order merchandise so that it actually stays in stock ALL days of the week? This is a mediocre warehouse store trying to masquerade as a terrible supermarket. This store does no one thing 100% right. Lines can sometimes be longer and slower than Costco. "Express Line" is a joke, you will find resale customers with huge flatbed dollies full of stuff in this line. Employees at their best are just plain incompetent, and the worst are sadistic. I miss Alberston's, hell I miss Haggen's. Anything is better than this sorely mismanaged store with an identity crisis. read more

Don't get the negative reviews on this place. It's 100 times better than the old location, hands down. The new location has spacious parking, the store itself is very clean, aisles clean and clear and items well stocked on shelves. They also have a great produce selection and an awesome bulk food section. I mainly shop at Costco and Trader Joe's, but if I need some specific canned goods or something quick, I run into Food 4 Less or Von's. I would rather shop at this store then Food 4 Less! It's so much nicer and there aren't tons of homeless tweekers harassing you in the parking lot! Like at so many other stores (I'm talking to YOU, food 4 less). read more

We've been shopping at this location on Johnson Ave in SLO for years. We had always noticed that the customer service and most of its staff are rude and have attitude problem! However, today's incidence topped it off!! I was there to buy several items including 4 cartons of 12 pack eggs for 0.99 each that they had advertised online and I had a screen shot for it on my phone. When I went to where the eggs are, I saw that prices were much higher. I found a store employee and showed her the online flyer and she first denied it, finally after looking at the flyer, asked me to show it to the cashier and she'd give it to us for0.99 each. I showed it to the cashier, 1st she said that the online flyer was an old one. After I showed her the date, she brought their printed flyer and said their price was $1.49 and not 0.99! I asked for her manager. She came and after we convinced her that their store flyer is identical to the online flyer except the egg, she said she'd adjust the price. We told her that she should give it to us free of charge since the error was from their side. She agreed to do that. She just asked us to pay for the purchase, then she'd give us what she had charged us for. We did that and she gave us $4 in cash. We thanked her and left. When we looked at the receipt later, we noticed that we had been charged $2.29 for each carton and not $1.49 that they were insisting that their sale price was in their printed flyer! I wanted to ignore and go home, but then I thought it was a matter of the principle! C. So I turned around and went back to the sore. I asked for the manager. This time a male named Joe came to see me. I grabbed a copy of their printed flyer and showed it to him and asked him why was I charged $2.29 for egg that was advertised on the store flyer $1.49 and on the online flyer $0.99? He instead of apologising, in a very rude and disrespectful voice accused me that the printed flyer was not from their store! When I insisted that it was, he said read the requirement that the total purchase should have been over $25, which I showed him that it was $39 and change! He finally very rudely said ok I'll reimburse you for it! After he did that, I told him please understand that it was not a matter of a few dollars here and there. I wanted to make sure that he'd fix the problem and would not charge other customers $2.29 for ea carton of eggs instead of 0.99 or at least $1.49 which was advertised in their flyer. That's over charge of over $100%! He instead of hearing me, accompanied me to the door, as if he wanted to kick me out! Very very disrespectful!! Since I am a foreign born citizen, it came across as he could not tolerate hearing a complaint from someone who is not a Caucasian!! read more

The worst costumer relations ever. My daughter and friend went in with out a mask. A employee with his mast down off his nose, stared called he names, loser ect. ALL on her cell phone video. She post the Video and later received death threats from ? I think the Smart & Final employee. I went in to talk to the employee only to get kicked our and they threatened to call the police because I did not have a mask. He also was about 2 feet from my face and I did not have a mask .They did not call me names. Only a 23 year Girl. Different when talking to a 6'2" 200 lbs man. . He was still there with his mask off his nose hiding behind the new assistant manager. This should be criminal the only store to let you in and start shopping and then threaten to call the cop's if you don't get out or put a mask on. Its no a crime not to wear a mask. Put a Gard at the door to stop you people who don't have a mask. No other store in San Luis Obispo has said anything except Costco where they have a person at the door read more

Missed opportunity! This was a great location that has served our community for 40+ years (formerly a Safeway, then over the years Scolaris, Haggens...) and now we are left with a store that is incomplete in its offerings. Great if you are in need of bulk items for your business, inadequate for individual needs, and unreliable as to what is in stock. Frequently dirty floors and rank water smells from flowers on entry to the store, dark, and no handi wipes in evidence the past week or more. Staff is helpful but no manager available when I have been in there. Use for emergencies only. read more

The fact that a grocery store doesn't have greenhouse cucumbers or broccolini speaks for its self. I enter a normally reliable store. I'm here to get vegetables for dinner and I have to say this is one of the poorest selection of produce I have ever seen. After having looked for the cucumbers and broccolini myself, I swallowed my pride and looked for help there wasn't a worker in sight. I decide to get lettuce for a salad and guess what, it's soggy. From there I look for the pre packaged lettuce and they didn't carry that product ether. An overall negative experience. read more

Decent parking lot and located in an easy-access area. The people here are nice including the staff and customers. I dropped by here while passing through to get water, which was adequately priced at $0.99/gal for spring water. I would come here again the next time I'm in the area. read more

A BIG (TWO) 2 THUMBS DOWN! Why you may ask?! Customer Service SUCKS! At least one Older Caucasian female cashier, from one of the checkouts. Before closing last month a Older Caucasian Female asked me a offensive indirect inappropriate question whether: "do you know how to cook?" A dumb insulting question insinuating if I couldn't cook at all? Just because I'm a Brown Hispanic Latina! We're not always gonna be "cooking!" To be honest in general nobody is cooking food that often in 90+ degree heat, especially when this town gets exceedingly hot during the summer. I'm not sure what "is" her "problem?!" But that's none of her business how I prepare or purchase frozen meals. But if your not going to say nothing nice! Don't say anything at all! Terrible parking lot, lots of empty shelves, definitely not like the Costco in SLO

This store just doesn't work. Despite constant restocking, partially blocking the already cramped aisles, many of the grocery product shelves are consistently empty. The selection of in-stock products isn't that great, either. Even the spot where you get a shopping cart can be empty at times, while employees stand around in the parking lot, discussing who should go collect the carts. Long lines await checkout by mildly interested employees. Every store in this location is worse than the last one! read more

Smart & Final Extra SLO- is a wonderful store, shelves are full, you can find anything you want there! Staff is very friendly, helpful to find the item I need, they are working hard, I can see it as I am there every 2-3 days! And now they have a new owner at the SUSHI STAND- and sushi there is AWESOME- tasty, clean, fresh and full variety, and has now amazing promo discount 50% off - of your 1 item and this promo goes till 06/04/17! If you are not in any consideration of time and don't mind standing in an unnecessarily slow line, this is the store for you.

Good prices on bulk quantities! A great place to shop if you cook for a large family or make stuff to freeze and eat later. They also stock restaurant supply and institutional cookware items. They have recently expanded their produce selection, too. read more

I have a few different issues with this store. There really aren't enough of the essential items to do your bare minimum shopping. There isn't a good spice section and sometimes the produce here is really subpar. My biggest issue with this store is the awful customer service. I work next door to this location so I'm in the store multiple times a week for convenience only and frequently I have to wait 10+ minutes when I only have 2 items. There are a few reasons for this, one is that when you have a mixture of people buying in bulk and people doing normal shopping or quick 2-5 item purchases like I do, the lines get out of control. The second part of this issue is that when there is a long line, there are frequently checkers standing around talking to people or stocking or other tasks instead of opening up additional check stands. Also, many of the people working there just aren't friendly. Once our office moves locations in September I definitely won't shop here as much because I usually leave there extremely frustrated. read more

I went in to buy something and they didn't have it in such a big store which is fine, but when I asked an employee to help me, his manager told him to do something else. Then I asked that same manager if they had that item in stock and his exact words were, "I don't know man". Then on another visit, a couple weeks later, I asked for help finding something else, and a fat, bald, manager told me, "It's over there, in the far end", he didn't even look up at me. The managers are really dismissive and snobby, as if they were running a 5-star hotel, they don't seem to care much about customers, at least not as much as the regular employees. The checkout was horrible as well, on both occasions, the cashier's only said 1 phrase, which was the total. There was no "Thanks come again", "Hey how are you" or "Have a good day", which you would hear at any generic fast food joint, or read from a self-checkout machine. I would rather travel a little farther to the Food 4 Less across town, or buy my groceries online, than go back to such an unfriendly store. read more
