I've been taking my Subaru here for a while now and I live their service. The folks that work the front desk always answer the phone and get all the i formation correct the first time. Scheduling is great and they give you a realistic timeline along with realistic recommendations and advice for your car. I was charged over $300 including tax to diagnose a fuel evap system leak check engine code on my 2001 outback and told I had an aftermarket fuel cap (I had installed a brand new fuel cap that I bought from Carter Subaru in Shoreline prior to this diagnosis request). They were very dismissive in telling me it was my fuel cap. I later found and diagnosed the problem as being a cracked evap system hose on the intake manifold. Replaced it with a new hose for $3.28 at the parts store and about 20 minutes of my time. I expect a lot more out of anyone if I'm paying them $300 then to have them NOT look at the engine at all and tell me it's a bad new gas cap. I will never take a subaru to smart service again, and I will recommend that none of my other subaru friends give these guys another cent. read more

Your staff advised and helped keep my 1999 Forester street legal running for many years. In particular, Tom advised and recommended services that fit within my limited budget. I could not have been in more competent hands. In the auto care and maintenance business that is a rarity. For me it was a blessing. I liked my old SUV, and she ran well under the coordinated care of Smart Service. My family, through their caring, thought it was time for me to have a lower milage, newer vehicle. You have to know that this was a difficult choice. Their concern was that my Sue-Bee was 25 years old. I can respect that! So, I agreed to accept their newer gift of a low-milage 2017 4-door SUV. A family member, who arranged all of this, did a couple of upgrades to my 1999 Subaru Forrester. He sold her for an amazing price! The new owner had all of the repair/service records from Smart Service and was OK with the requirement to keep the oil topped off due to an on-going value leak that was babied for years. Six months after the sale, the new owner, following all of the quirks of the vehicle, is happy with the purchase. Smart Service was part of that successful sale. This is my second time in the shop. I have a 2008 FJ Cruiser and was impressed with the staff and service level, attention to detail that they provide. HOWEVER BUYER BEWARE, I just had a very negative pricing experience with this shop. As consumers for auto mechanics, most consumers are not able to validate or verify if the price we are offered is good or not. I realize a lot goes into pricing for these services, part, labor, warranty etc... Recently I brought my FJ in as I had diagnosed a sound coming from my front left tire. I thought it was a wheel bearing. I immediately did some research on how much this should cost to replace. I was a bit shocked when they quoted me $1,480 to replace one front wheel bearing. I called another shop that uses OEM parts, and they said they could do it with the same parts and warranty for $700. Less than half. To make sure I was not going crazy I called the local Toyota Service shop at dealership, and they quoted me $900 out the door. Typically, dealer service is the highest price. Now I have two kids in college and don't have $700 to throw away, I am writing to say buyer beware. Its a good shop and I used to trust them, but if all repairs and maintenance are going to be over market as this repair was, its not worth it. Oh by the way when I told them I was taking it to another shop they charged me $248.85 to "Diagnose" the issue. What a bunch of baloney!!! read more

2003 Forester with lots of miles. Spent close to 4k in a couple of months time. New suspension all-around. Major factory service. Car started go into low idle as if there was a vacuum leak, or running on half cylinders. Took it in for a diagnostic check. $325 later, I'm told that they don't know what is the problem because the computer couldn't come up with anything. Now the car is parked, for I can't even go a mile down the road without the same problem. Had to buy a bicycle to get to and from work. If you need a true mechanic, don't go there! read more

I brought my Outback to Smart Service for years. Twice I came in with my check engine light on, and they did an oil switching valve replacement each time. Then they said it needs a ring job costing $6,000 - even though the engine only had 130,000 miles on it. They ruined my engine. Avoid. read more

Very thorough and professional service provided at competitive rates. Not wanting to take my Subaru Outback to the dealer for its 30k service, and also wanting to support local and small business I came upon Smart Service through the great Yelp reviews. I called on a Friday morning to ask about service costs. They quoted me a little below what the dealer would charge, offered to squeeze me in the same day thanks to a cancellation, and also offered to provide me with a loaner car. Very professional and knowledgeable staff. Thoroughly explained what they were going to do and came in at the quoted price. They don't try to up sell you on unnecessary extras as many dealers would. My head gasket was bad and i Brought it here. There were more expensive than most places but they offered a 3 year warranty on my head jacket so I figured it was worth the extra money. Fast forward a year later, my car started overheating, and I brought it here because of They're warranties. They said i needed to replace all of the hoses. My brother, also a mechanic, said that sounds like a shot in the dark. His point was why ALL hoses. He had a good point but I didn't listen. I paid over a thousand dollars for them to replace all the hoses. I drive the car off, and it overheats again. I drive it right back here, and they spend 3 days With my car and and determine determined that the heater core is clogged. They wanted to charge me another $1,700!They also said that because I drove the car and it overheated I Avoided my warranty on my headgasket. HOW IS THAT POSSOBLE??!! I HAVE YOU $1000 TO FIX MY CAR AMD IT WASNT FIXED!!!!! I asked them if they can take some of the labor cost off because of the fact that I've already given them a $1000 to fix the issue and it's not fixed. They refused that offer. I took the car to my brother And he discovered that a sensor was bad. He changed the sensor and I've had no problems since. DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE!!!!!!!!!!!! See you crooks in court! read more

I wouldn't recommend going anywhere else but here for all Subaru problems from head gaskets to oil changes. I was having constant issues with noises coming from axles/wheels and they automatically figured out the problem and more. They worry about the costumer first and you usually don't find that in repair shops, at least from my experience. They go over every aspect of the car, leaving a thorough report afterwards. Detail is key within this shop. This will be the only place I take my Subaru's for any repairs. I went to mukilteo location and had Jess as my supervisor of repairs. She is the best at customer service... something that seems to be a lost art these days. BUT not with Jess. She is so knowledgeable about cars, and has the gift of explaining to those like me who are not car savvy. We owned two Honda CR-Vs and always got repairs done at Klein Honda. But Klein had a 3-week wait for an appointment, so we tried Smart Service for the first time. We got a same-day appointment!!! We took in "Old Grey," our 2006 CR-V with 229,000 miles to the Mukilteo location to see if it made sense for us to invest in essential safety-related repairs. They did a complete inspection, told us what it needed and broke down the costs. Manager Tom Hoag talked with us for a long time, he was so knowledgeable and patient and smart. Ultimately we elected to sell it on Craigslist. Tom recommended an asking price and gave us a range of what the right buyer would pay. He was spot-on and we sold it an hour after listing it. (We shared the Smart Service inspection report and all repair records with the buyer.) We plan to take our 2006 CR-V to Smart Service from now on. We were so impressed with their honesty, communications, speed and expertise. Tom Hoag provided an old-fashioned level of customer service that has become a rarity. We are grateful! read more

Best service provider I've had the pleasure to use. I have been using Smart Service since 2010 for regular servicing and oil changes. My 2010 Outback has nearly 200,000 miles on it without any major service being required (a tribute to Subaru, but also to the preventative maintenance done by Smart Service). They don't do more than you need, but they'll keep you informed as to what's needed next time. Over the past 25 years I've owned 3 Subarus, and have taken all of them to Smart Service in Shoreline for 20 years. I trust them to provide thorough, careful service and repairs, to keep my cars reliable (I keep my cars for a long time) and to charge a fair price. As a single woman for most of these years who doesn't know a lot about cars, it was especially important to me to have mechanics I could trust, who explained things well and who didn't try to talk down to me or take advantage of my relative ignorance. Mike and everyone I've interacted with at Smart Service are always professional, friendly, and communicative. They are also good about being clear about when I can wait to take care of an issue vs. something that is more urgent. In 20 years they've never messed anything up or broken anything and I always feel I can count on my car to be reliable and running well after service or repair. They usually leave it sparkling clean too. I discovered Smart Service in 2001 when my 1996 Impreza needed a transmission-related repair. My then-mechanic quoted me a prohibitively expensive price and I somehow found Smart Service, who did the repair for about $400-500 less than what my previous mechanic was going to charge. We have been bringing our Subarus here for a few years now. Always great service, they always go above and beyond and are very patient answering any questions, which is always great. Very reasonably priced for work that should be done and they don't upsell like the dealerships do, for work that can wait a bit. I can not say enough amazing things about this place. From a simple (but not really simple at all) oil change to a broken joint that has been bugging me since I bought my car, these guys will take care of you and then some! They know their stuff. I used to think I was only going to find this level of care in Colorado, where I'm from, but I've once again stuck gold! They even cover the seat so they don't get grease on it. I've never seen that before. They wipe the inside of your window. Totally unnecessary but an incredible touch!!! So happy I have a trustable mechanic for my Subaru's now! I had received recommendations to use Smart Service by both my Subaru dealer as well as other Subaru owners. Last week I scheduled an appointment to have my 30K service performed on my Outback XT (for record, I was 13K overdue for that 30K service.) Tom, the site manager of the Mukilteo facility answered the phone within two or three rings, was very pleasant, and scheduled me at a convenient time. He also indicated that a free rental was available to me as part of the major service coverage. I took my car down today to drop it off first thing in the morning. Tom introduced himself and made sure that the rental company was on its way to either pick me up or deliver my car. They told me that my car would be ready on time at 4 and they would contact me. Forty minutes before my car was expected to be ready, I received a follow-up call from Tom indicating that the car was finishing up and that everything looked good. No effort to upsell or try to get me to spend unnecessary money. He indicated that they'd have it ready for me on time. I returned to the facility where Tom was helping another customer, and the mechanic, Dan, who serviced my car walked through the entire inspection, what he looked at, what he did, and gave me feedback on every single piece of the walkthrough. From the percentage of brake wear, to the adjustments he made on belts and hoses. He also covered its current emissions output, explained the numbers, and was very positive. The price was very reasonable - comparatively, about $100 under what the dealership would charge. Dan and his peers are well certified beyond the standard, and their labor rates are very competitive. Additional pros - their website provides service coupons, as well as updates to their giveaways. To show thanks to their customers who opt for their license plate frames (free to anyone) they raffle off free things to customers even if they've not come in for service that month. Personable, professional, and did an excellent job. The little things I normally notice with my car were tightened up and improved. The car itself performs the same (as expected) but the little things they did are noticeable to me, as I spend a lot of time in that car. I take my Subi there for oil changes, but I wanted to get a trailer receiver installed and they gave me the rundown, including where to look for getting the parts cheaper! I had my 2003 Subaru's head gasket replaced there and while they were at it I had them check out the whole car and do a lot of expensive preventative maintenance. Probably spent too much on it, but this model Subaru seems to be holding it's value pretty well, so maybe not. It's running great now. I came back and paid a lot for an oil change. Seem to be as expensive as a dealership, so I will try Top Spec next in Everett. Top Spec has a lot of positive reviews, are very responsive and seem to be much more affordable than Smart Service. read more

I love Smart Service. In fact both locations are great. I used to use the location on Ballinger Way, but I moved and was glad their other branch wasn't too far away. They always keep a good eye on the working condition of my car and they always have detailed notes about it on file. They always tell me that I should think about repairs I might need in the near future, but they let me know that I can wait on certain things and not have to spend the money. Tom is warm and friendly and last time I was in there they were playing orchestral music of pop covers which I think is palatable for any type of person. My boyfriend and I take our cars here because we love to support small businesses. They were referred to us through a friend, so we decided to try them out. My beau has a 2011 WRX STI and he's brought his car here to do the 30K, clutch replacement and some other stuff I don't honestly remember. I went in recently to get an oil change. I had made the appointment request online and received what I thought was a confirmation email, but after reading closely they couldn't actually get me in the time I wanted. I went in thinking I had an appointment, but turned out I wasn't on the books. The owner was very nice about it, and found a tech who could take my car that very instant. Tom, the store manager and service writer, always gives straight forward pricing. He's always honest about what you should fix right away and what can wait, and for how long it can wait, and what the best estimated cost is. Never pushy about getting everything done at once, but gives good explanations in understandable terms so that you as the customer can make an informed decision about what's necessary for you and your car, (and your bank account). All the employees are always so friendly, as opposed to other auto companies that I've visited, they seem to actually have patience with their customers, especially those of us who know nothing about cars! Also, I always get all that cool "S.W.A.G." (stuff we all get) left in my car when it's been serviced (and vacuumed!), love that stuff ;) All in all, I love Smart Service, not only because they do a great job, but because they are always a good value, and are so sincere towards their customers.
