Highly recommend this Punta Gorda location. We've had a small 5x5 storage unit here for almost 4 yrs. This location is great, staff is very friendly and the place is damn near spotless !! Very easy with the drive-thru access. Recently, we needed to enlarge our unit to "hold more stuff" . Next step... got a 10x30 to hold everything, including my sports car & golf cart. We like the fact that the security is so high, cameras are everywhere, using my phone to open a super fast roll up entry door, and the ease of obtaining a cargo cart for "our stuff". All of this is good. This company is very easy to work with, in person or online. They should build more SmartStop Storage facilities just "LIKE THIS LOCATION". ****** Make sure you know your time of how long you want the unit.... ask questions about how much notification they require for exiting the unit. read more

Rat-Infested - I had used this facility for 1 1/2 years - over the past 5 months - it became infested with rats - My unit contents had rat droppings over $10,000's of Marketing equipment and home furnishings ... It's one of the nicest facilities when i moved in to become one of the worst i've used over 20 years of storing my contents - After numerous complaints - they finally put a rat trap in the unit - killed one rat - left the blood and fluids all over the floor after removing - It's going to take me weeks to go through every thing i had in this unit and clean it up after moving out ... I kept NO food in my unit and one of the reasons i pay more for interior conditioned units is to protect my belongings ... I don't recommend this facility. read more

I loved the easy layout of the facility but prices doubled in two years and just kept climbing. At one time, I used my phone for entry to my unit and was able to open up someone's else's unit. This happened twice..concerning. Robert is the bomb! He is excellent and professional. KEEPA! read more

DO NOT RENT HERE! My husband and I recently needed to store some items. Seemed ok. Pricey. Hurricane Ian came through our town. This company was COMPLETELY unprepared. After the storm passed my husband called and said we needed to get in and assess damages. We were told no. Told no for 5 days because the didn't have power and NO backup plan to let tenants in. Many of the units suffered MAJOR water damage. Since 5 had past that stagnate water turned into mold which we were forced to breathe in while We tried to save what we could. The company insurance they make us buy has said they won't cover a nickel of our losses. You're safer leaving your items in your driveway. Absolutely appalled! We won't be Tenats anymore. read more

SmartStop absolutely ruined a wonderful controlled environment self storage facility in Punta Gorda, FL. Originally built, well-managed and meticulously maintained as Comfort Storage, their rent was on the upper end of the local price range but the value was there. The whole facility was kept spotlessly clean and the temperature and humidity were always carefully controlled to a comfortable level by rapidly opening and closing the entry and exit drive-through doors. After around two years of operation, the original owners of Comfort Storage apparently sold out to SmartStop. When they took over, we had to have all new contracts and get setup in their system which turned out to be a hassle. But, they offered us a larger, first-floor unit for less than we were paying Comfort Storage previously. That was the only good news. Then we began to notice that the SmartStop operations staff was leaving the big entry door open on "nice" days (probably to save on their air-conditioning costs) which reduced security and resulted in wide temperature and humidity swings of the "controlled environment" storage facility. We had shared access with several local family members while we were away for the summer, but their fragile system kept dropping that information, requiring multiple re-entries. But, the worst news came just over a year later when they notified us that our rent was going to go up to 147% of the current rate with no other changes. The local operations staff refused to answer any questions about the rate increase and referred us to the SmartStop headquarters. We placed three calls, could never reach a live person, left messages but never received a call back. Being away for the summer, we had to pay the higher rent for several months before we could return and vacate. In the meantime, hurricane Ian hit Punta Gorda. Fortunately, our particular storage unit and its contents were not damaged. When we were trying to vacate that facility in December of 2022, it was extremely busy with holiday activity, especially on weekends. One Saturday, the main entry door was blocked off and we had to drive in using the open rear exit door. The excuse was a "power surge" but the operations staff took no responsibility to get the entry door repaired quickly. They just "work here" and appear to take no responsibility for problems or have any authority to fix anything. We are so glad we are finally out of SmartStop storage (nothing smart about choosing to do business with that company). It was once a wonderful place to store and access our extra belongings, but the SmartStop company has absolutely ruined it. We cannot and will not recommend it to anyone. read more

Horrible place to use! Buyer beware! Our first month rent for a 5x10 was $30 + tx. 2nd month they bumped us up to $87 +tx without notice. Of course, we had all our things moved in so we paid it. We left the following month. ALSO they only have ONE ELEVATOR and it was broken a number of times so we could only access our unti via a stair well. ALSO, they also boast about security, but the back gate is typically left open so anyone can just drive right in. ALSO, the self secure system on the phone app fails continually and won't work so you can't always open your unit. The staff is rude and the guy there just rolls his eyes and sighs if you ask for help. TERRIBLE PLACE! read more

I stored a vehicle @SmartStop storage from mid June thru mid October but was required to pay through the month of October in full... The representative said they would prorate the last month and refund the balance... which apparently is a LIE.. That was also communicated when the vehicle was picked up... Spoken to 3 different people since November and not one said they don't refund unless you pick up in the 1st week of the month.... until today! It does say that in the fine print of the contract, but a least 3 times representatives lied regarding the final month... If you rent from this place be aware of their policy.. They've lost this snowbird as a regular customer.. read more
