If you own an import car you must take it to Smith Imported Car Service for repair or upkeep. We have a 2015 Audi Q7 and took it to a repair shop closer to home. We had AC issues with water in the floorboards. We were initially told it would be a quick repair and they would only need it a day or so. They called and told use it was a seal and that it would cost between $500-750 to repair. Three days later they still haven't repaired the car and now say there might be other issues with the AC. I told them to put it back together and do not repair it and we wanted the car back. They were angry but I felt something was not right about the entire thing. We searched for months afterwards and came across Smith's Imported Car Service. Arranged a day to drop it off. Four hours after dropping it off they call and tell us it's ready and it will be $80 which included them replacing the battery in the key fob! Don't get ripped of or treated badly.....simply go to Smith's Imported Car Service and save yourself time and money!!!!!! We will be back there for all our service needs! read more

Genuinely caring and honest auto shop. I previously went to the Volvo dealership in Louisville where they told me I needed over $2k worth of repairs. Fortunately, I discovered Smith Imports. They took the time to check everything thoroughly and reported back that my Volvo had no actual issues. They reminded me that dealerships stay in business by overcharging for "repairs". Even though Smith Imports took the time to look over my vehicle, they didn't charge me. And this was not a walk-in. I had to schedule several days in advance. These guys have been great for me and my now 26 year-old Toyota. (Yes, I do know the meaning of commitment.) I haven't yet asked them to do anything major, but they've come through for me on the several minor repairs I've needed with quick service, good communication, and competent workmanship. Several weeks ago I needed to see my ignition replaced, so I set up an appointment. That same day, they were able to locate the right part here in town (no small feat when your car is vintage '92) and get the car back to me on the same day ($123 parts, $125 labor -- totally reasonable). The only hard part is finding the building. The address says Broadway, but the building really sort of faces Baxter -- and the entrance is more on the alley than the street. It's like a speakeasy mechanic -- if you can find the door, you're good to go. read more

These guys are awesome, fair, and friendly. I've been taking my car (Subaru Impreza Outback Sport '97) there since 2005, and they have been great. While I pay more than say, Jiffy Lube for an oil change, I know they are checking things out while they are in there, and only tell me what needs to be done. I know this because of the years I've been going to them, the years and miles on my car (almost 200k now) and how much they could have BS'd me if they had wanted to. I was in louisville visiting family. My car battery died on me on the day I was leaving for home. I didn't know where to go so I googled car repair near me and started calling. Was told by one place that they could get me in the following Monday. Luckily, Smith's was my second call. When I told them the situation both my being from out of town and heading home that day and what the vehicle was doing, he agreed it was likely the battery and while they could not do a significant repair, they could change the battery out for me if I could get it jumped. Once I was able to get it jumped and to Smith's, they went above and beyond to get the battery changed quickly and get me back on the road. I understand that changing a battery out is not a complicated auto repair but treating someone with kindness when they knew I lived 3.5 hours away and was likely not going to be a repeat customer says a lot about the character and trustworthiness of Smith's. read more

I've been in Louisville for nearly five years now, and I'm happy that I've finally settled on a mechanic. I didn't actually have a car when I first moved to Louisville, but I eventually ended up with a 1999 Subaru Legacy. It was old and had plenty of miles, but I really loved that car. In two years I went through two mechanics and several repairs before settling on Smith Imported Car Service. I am almost hesitant to give them five stars because I've only been to them three times. However, the first time alone was such a pleasant experience that I feel this star rating is warranted. I had taken my car in to the second mechanic I tried, a mechanic I thought I trusted. They kept the car for a while, replaced the timing belt, and said they had done all they could but the real problems were probably related to the transmission and that they couldn't help with that. It was roughly a thousand dollars, and they were telling me that probably didn't even fix everything. Fortunately I was chatting with/complaining to my orthodontist about my car woes and she recommended Smith's. I took the car to Smith and they diagnosed the problem as a timing issue. They fixed it for a couple hundred bucks and the diagnosis and fix were faster than the previous mechanic. The Subaru ran very well for the rest of the time I had the vehicle (unfortunately not long thanks to being rear-ended on the 64 westbound and the copious amounts of rust that caused minor body damage to lead to the totaling of the car by my insurance company). The other two times I've had them look over new-to-me Toyotas to make sure there were no red flags (two not because I actually *wanted* to by two cars in a year, but two because the 64 is the WORST and I had the first of the Toyotas totaled last month). The first one had no issues and the second needed a minor belt adjustment. Each time I was charged $60, an extremely fair price based on my internet searches. I can't say I'm anxious to use this repair shop again anytime soon, but if my car does need work I'm glad I've got somewhere to bring it. read more

Our long-time car mechanic recently stopped working on VWs. He recommended Smith Imports close the intersection of Broadway and Baxter. We left my car there while on vaca because my hubby was convinced there was a problem with the steering. Also, wiper fluid was not working. After driving several times, putting on the rack etc, they couldn't find a problem w steering. Checked everything for safety, and replaced hose for wiper fluid. When we picked it up this morning, they charged us NOTHING. Not even for time/labor. We were stunned. If you drive an imported car and need a mechanic, these guys are honest and we hear great things about the work they do. Mark and Matthew are the guys we spoke with.
