I originally heard about this place on our local news so my husband, and I made the drive to NC. I can honestly say the store was really nice and clean. We purchased so much stuff but the star of the show is the homemade sausage, and bbq. Ohhhh the produce fresh green beans and potatoes... we are definitely going back real soon. read more

I make a stop here every time I drive through this area. They have very good pork sausage. Both roped and soft packed. They also have a selection of bbq sauces that you will not find up North. Typical southern store with BBQ, chittering, souse, sweet potato everything. From pies to muffins to cake! Stop by and you'll leave with something. I promise you! read more

A visit home isn't complete without going to stick up at the best store .."Red & white"!

I had to stop by here while driving through after hearing they have the best ham in North Carolina. Apparently apparently the line is long as hell during holiday season to pick up one of these things. It's a tradition and many peoples families to eat one of these. That said, when I was with my boyfriend, he went straight to the counter to order a few slices to go. I walked around the store to see what else they had, and I was pleased to see that there were many local products available. We picked up a few jars of hot pepper jelly to make with cream cheese and crackers. They also had delicious salted peanuts and pralines. Beyond that, it is just a regular grocery store for the most part. I did see a few items that I have not yet noticed in other stores. For example, different brands of sodas or different flavors of familiar products. Apparently their chicken salad is pretty popular. Something else I'd liked about this place was their dessert section. You could order whole cakes, half cakes or even just a slice. I'm sure this is a wonderful grocery store for anyone who lives in the area. read more

A wonderful country grocery store in Rocky Mount, NC. Great home made sausage, bacon, deli salads, etc and cakes, muffins, cookies. Bulk candies like the good old days. Worth a trip just to see the Christmas decorations in the store, complete with a toy train running through in the store. Love Smiths! Great employees too! read more

Grew up close by this store. Now when I'm In the area I stop and get the following items that they are well known for: The air dried sausage- it great! I prefer the regular over the spicy. Pimento cheese- I don't generally love pimento cheese, but This is really good and a perfect texture. Chicken salad- it's true southern chicken salad. Maybe pickles celery and no fruit. Cracklings- sold over by the sausage. Most perfect cracklings ever. The jared jellies and jams- very good and a huge variety. This grocery store is a country favorite with meats and fresh produce at good prices. Shirley Caesar would run out of lyrics trying to describe all the parts of the pig and vegetables here. WOW! Going in here is like stepping off a time machine - a small town, Southern, locally owned grocery store that makes a number of down home products in house. Did I say small town - this store closes at 7PM, is not open on Sunday, and displays a variety of old time wrapped candies in peach baskets - and that's just the start - around November 1 they put out the holiday fare. I came here for the Eastern NC BBQ and the air dried sausages they make in house, and ended up staying for much more, which resulted in a larger expenditure than intended, but that is what food adventures are all about. I ended up with TastyKake Coconut Crème, Pete's BBQ Sauce, George's BBQ Sauce, Smith's own BBQ sauce, Smith's Hot Chow-Chow (amazing stuff with pinto beans), made in house Cheese Biscuits (an Eastern NC favorite), a made in house slice of Caramel Cake (sinful), Smith's Pimento Cheese (too sweet for my tastes), Smith's Pork Sausage (both link and patty), Smith's Liver Pudding (comes in a link sausage casing - excellent), beautiful Baby Back ribs, 2 bone in rib eye at $7.99 a pound (great flavor), and of course, Smith's Pork BBQ. The BBQ is an excellent version of the Eastern NC style - clean, tender, moist, and with enough heat to get your attention. They have a small restaurant which serves up sandwiches, a few country cooking items, and of course, Smith's own BBQ. Had a nice sandwich there to recover from the rigors of shopping - nice way to end the visit. The only way this could have been better would have been making this visit with my Dad - the man loved Souse Meat, and almost any other kind of pig product. Saw something on every aisle that reminded me of him. read more

This place is amazing! Great country cooking, friendly service, and affordable groceries and sundries. My friend has stopped here before and wanted to stock up on sausage and other groceries. I got some sausage for my husband and other fun things like blueberry preserve, Pinot noir steak sauce, queso blanco (all homemade). I love this grocery store. The dried link sausage, side meat and fat back is to die for. The deli has delicious food plus cakes, pies and pasteries. My only complaint is they never answer their phone. We live 30 miles away and sometimes we need to know that they have what we are looking for before we get there. The sausage here is worth the drive. It is an unassuming little grocery store that looks like a Piggly Wiggly on the inside (those of you from NC will know what this means). I found the sausage counter and let the lady know that I had seen the feature on their sausage on WRAL and made the trek from Raleigh to see if it was as good as the story and the customers they interviewed implied. I'm here to let you one that it is fantastic. My neighbor has cancer and very little food tastes good to her and she enjoyed it which made it all the more worthwhile. I bought ten pounds but I will be buying more on my next voyage!! read more

The parking lot here isn't the greatest, but Smith's Red and White is a great place to find classic food. The dessert section is my favorite of course, with the fresh baked cakes and pies. They have an extensive candy section, especially around christmas, and the staff is usually friendly. It's packed store though, don't expect to be casually shopping in here as there just isn't room for inefficiency. read more

Best sausage on the planet. Family owned (and the owners are terrific folks, nicest people ever) stocked with tons of fresh local products, it cannot be beat. Every time I pass through the area I bring a cooler with me to stock up the fridge! My one complaint-I wish the restaurant next store served the sausage at lunch as well as at breakfast!
