It's a bakery with brightly colored donuts, pastries, cakes, and smiley face & rainbow cookies but when you walk in you don't feel happy. No one greets you and they seem pissed off when you order something or ask what something is. I don't know why the people are so angry and unhappy but they are. stopped by today to pick up some baked goods for a holiday event I was going to. Hours posted were until 4, I arrived and walked in a took a look at what was available. some cookies and some kind of pastry was all they had. On a holiday weekend no less. The Sugar Cookies were amazing! First time ever at a smiths bakery and I wasn't disappointed, in the cookies that is. Idk if it has been a long day for the workers or what but it doesn't kill to give a smile or even greet customers as they walk in. Would have definitely been a 5 star if they were more pleasant. Smith's may be one of the only bakeries worth paying a few bucks a cookie for. My favorites are the famous happy face cookies and Thumbprints. I love Smith's, because it's a local, to die for, Bakersfield legend. Everyone who visits Bako must visit this bakery. read more

I must strongly disagree with "O R." comment from 7/13/18 - I have been a patron of Smith's Bakeries my entire life of 54 yrs. I also purchase a dozen donuts daily for my company's customers from the White Lane store, so I frequent them daily. Smiths absolutely has maintained their quality of their products throughout the years.. The cookies and donuts are exactly as I remember as a child! The crew at the White Lane facility are a great bunch! You need to realize that Smith's is a BAKERY and not just a donut shop. ALL of their products are top notch in quality, taste, appearance!! Well first off let me start by saying...."We love their cookies!" My complaint with today's visit was the clerk's inability to distinguish the difference between a perfectly good $20.00 bill and a counterfeit one! I was there to buy cookies that rang up to over $30.00. When I went to pay with 2 $20.00 bills she used the pen to check them and insisted that one of them was counterfeit! She even said that the ridges were not there when she rubbed it with her finger. She refused to take it...I was lucky to have another one in my wallet...which by the way, all came from the ATM at my bank. I took it straight to the bank to tell them....to my relief they informed me that it was a good bill and that the pens used are not reliable! Apparently her fingernail was not reliable either! I think Smith's needs to train their staff on the importance of NOT accusing someone of trying to pass counterfeit money if they are unable to make a good judgement of it....probably will not patronize that establishment in the future! read more

The champagne cake, is scrumptious. The chocolate melts in your mouth. It is light, rich, filling all at the same time.

I special ordered my Dad's 60th Birthday party cakes. One main cake with the Happy 60th birthday and a small champagne cake. I prepaid the whole bill of $46. I sent my son with the receipt on Saturday afternoon. He came back with one cake (the small one). Smiths was now closed and closed on Sunday the day of my Dad's party. I was left with a small cake for 30 people! I had to have Albertsons make a sheet cake for the party. Smiths would only refund me for the cake they didn't give us. I couldn't believe it, of course you are going to refund the cake we didn't get due to your error! And acted like they were being so good by doing that. With all the trouble and extra money it cost, I thought they should have at least refunded the whole order. No wonder small shops are closing and big chains like Alberstons get our business. Oh and the "boss" I called from their Union branch wouldn't even return my call, I was told "he's too busy". What a loser. Thank you Albertsons for fixing Smith's mess up. read more

I have never tried one of their cookies or pre-made desserts, I am basing this review solely on my experience with my birthday cake. I went in there to get just an 8" round birthday cake for my own birthday. I showed them two pictures of what I wanted. Both pictures had a one letter cursive initial surrounded by frosting flowers. The letter was an "A" and it was supposed to be PAINTED ON with edible paint or food coloring or however they do it, IT WAS NOT supposed to be piped on with icing like a normal cake would. I asked them if this was possible and they told me yes. When the cake was given to me at my house I was shocked because it was not even what I asked for. Granted, the flowers were very pretty, but the letter in the middle of the cake was not at all what I wanted. I wouldn't be mad if they had just told me from the beginning that they couldn't do that! I looked at their gallery of past cakes (which i should have done before) and they all look pretty terrible and messy. They just are not good at lettering and decorating. They need to definitely hire a new cake decorator. read more

I've been here before and the cases were stocked of various pastries. Unfortunately today was a disappointment to say the least. Walked in around 9:50am to a very dim lit store. The cases were pretty bare but saw that they had a tray of each the thumbprint/heart/smiley face cookies. I was looking for cookies for Super Bowl but they didn't have any. I guess they just bank on the phone orders. Don't get me wrong their cookies are great, but the fact that they don't stock the locations with more pastries is sad.........even Bagels and Blenders had Super Bowl cookies. read more
