A few minutes later a second barber appeared and asked if I was looking for a cut. Everything started off as normal and chit chat. But I felt something done to one side and not the other. I asked him to trim my beard and he ran clippers over it and did not trim moustache or around my mouth. When he said I was done I went into the bathroom and noticed he did did not cut one side of my head where my beard starts. I went out and asked him if he could fix it and he was already scrolling on his phone and he huffed. I chose to leave and find another barber open to fix what already had been done. My first impression of this town was by the barber shop. Thank goodness everyone else has been pleasant and welcoming. At 8am, it is hard to believe that he was having a bad day already.

Madison fixed it. Clean lines, actual shape, the kind of cut where you leave the chair looking like a person who has his affairs in order, even if that's a lie you're telling everyone including yourself. While I waited, they offered a free beer or a soft drink, and I stood there weighing the beer option with more seriousness than the decision probably deserved, before remembering it was noon on a Wednesday and I still had places to be that required functioning as an adult. I took the soft drink on my way out, quietly, like a man protecting a reputation nobody was actually monitoring. The shop leans into the whole "Keep it handsome" motto without it feeling like a bit, old-school chairs, a barber who clearly knows what she's doing, a George Bernard Shaw quote on the wall about gentlemen putting more into the world than they take out, which is a high bar for a place that also sells beard oil and, apparently, day-drinking opportunities. I will, predictably, wait too long before my next visit and show up looking like I lost a fight with a hedge trimmer. Madison will fix that too. This is the system now, and I've made peace with it.

Unfortunately, this was one of them. Exclusive Touch Barbershop looks like the real deal: sharp setup, busy shop, and a charismatic owner. And honestly, the results probably are great if your hair is pin-straight (1A/1B) or tightly curled (3A/3B). But for folks like me with hair that sits awkwardly in the middle, this just didn't work. I gave the same instructions I always give: "skin fade on the sides; for the top: trim and thin, with not too much length off." Things were mostly fine until we got to the top. This was the first time a stylist didn't seem to understand what "thinning" meant. When I asked for more thinning, he took off more length, not at all the same thing. I froze a bit because I realized I couldn't even explain what thinning was to someone who didn't already know. That's never happened before. I do appreciate the time spent and the effort, but I walked out with a haircut I hate. The top looks poofy and unbalanced, and I'll now have to take a single guard to it myself to even things out. At $40 plus tip, I expected better, at the very least something on par with a mediocre national chain, not worse. Oh, and heads up: they don't take credit cards, which they don't mention upfront. You'll get hit with that surprise at the end, so bring cash or a payment app. One more letdown from an already frustrating visit.
