Avoid this barbershop. I was a regular customer even though the pricing is a little high for a regular man's cut. Recently the haircuts haven't been so great. The staff can be a bit rude at times. The Local Barber and Tap is a great modern take on a classic barber shop. The feel of a vintage barber chair with modern blues/rock music playing in the background. The are fast and efficient, and Trey did a great job on my cut. High and tight with a beard trim was $45, so it's more pricey than I would normally go for but it was worth a splurge! I love a straight razor shave on the back of my neck, and they include it with your cut. No beer for me, but they had several on tap. I will definitely come back and see Trey again! read more

I stopped at the local barber & tap while in Asheville recently. I needed a hair cut and a beard clean up badly, but not being from the area I had no clue where to go (thank goodness for Yelp, right?) I didn't have an appointment, but I was greeted by Eric who asked me what I was looking for. It seemed like it was a busy day, but he said he could definitely get the hair cut in, but we would have to play the trim by ear. I agreed, but said I needed very little off the beard and hoped we could make the time work. The barbershop it cute and while I didn't have an appointment and was in a bit of a rush, I feel like I didn't get the full experience of the taproom (my fault, not theirs). Eric was great. Friendly. Attentive and knew exactly what he was doing. I was able to get the cut and trim I was looking and left me feeling great. I think I paid around $55 for both, which is higher than I typically pay, but I was in a crunch, Eric was amazing, and I got exactly what I was looking for so I can't complain. The guys here all seemed wonderful and it seemed like a place where both locals and out-of-towners alike both enjoy. Highly recommend. read more

I did frequent this shop for about two years. I didn't have a preference for any barber in particular - everyone would take the time to do a good job. That is no longer the case. Antoine was perfect just enough attention without being overly chatty. There is something nice waiting for your shave and haircut with a glass of freshly pulled cider. I came in without appointment and typically they don't do shave without reservations but they worked me into the schedule. I can confidently give Bryce 1 star here. I won't do that to the entire business though. The guy who greeted me was kind: it's looks like the atmosphere there could have been really enjoyable. Instead they kept trying to auction me off as if I was a baby with a dirty diaper....then I sit down for my appointment....15 minutes late and get the most impersonal crap service ever. Highly recommend this extremely talented, friendly team for your haircut and manscaping needs! We came in off the streets in a bind, as my cousin was getting married and needed some TLC. Although we didn't have an appointment, the kind barbers saw the desperation in my eyes and said they'd help us out as time allowed. After waiting about 10 minutes, occupying our time with beer on tap and a game of checkers, one of the barbers had my cousin hop in the chair and did a great job shaping up his beard for his big day! I also got a glimpse of some "before" and "after" looks on some clientele while waiting, and I can say with confidence that those barbers worked pure magic on several guys during my 30 minutes in the shop. read more

I have been getting my hair cut here for years. Got home today and wasn't psyched after showering and styling. Not being sure what to do and what the appropriate etiquette was without being "that guy" in a business I am so fond of I posted on social media to find somewhere to get it fixed. A representative of the shop as well as the barber who cut it reached out to me and told me to come back and get it fixed and assured me it was no big deal. So I did and now my hair looks awesome! I was just really unsure what to do since I have never had a hair cut I wasn't 100% pleased with there. I can't thank them enough for being understanding and patient of me and my social quirks and of course I immediately removed my post. Long time customer, and customer for life. I've been there three times and have left lackluster every time and can affirmatively say I will not be going back. It feels like they just want to quickly cut your hair and kick you out so that can get that nice $36 plus tip. Keep in mind they are not worth $72 + tips per hour. Each haircut I've had has been uneven and lopsided and will grow out horribly. Equivalent to some $20 haircuts I've had. The 2nd guy was antione the third guy was bryce. Bryce was the guy who cut my hair below. Just those two example show that the hair will grow extremely unevenly and it looks lopsided. Glad I did a custom tip at least instead of the given 20% 25% or 30% Recommended tip. What a joke. If you like beer and get buzz cuts this place is for you. read more

I am so reluctant to give this amazing barber shop such a great review because I kind of want to keep it a secret all to myself. I mean I can already tell the secret is out by the small line forming on the outside of the barbershop as other patrons waited patiently for them to open at 11am. I'm not gonna lie I saw the line and almost bailed. But then I thought to myself, I'm here already, let's give it a shot. So in the parking garage I went (yes it's downtown and parking can be scarce). A short walk down the street/alley and you'll find the small sign designating the barbershop and tattoo parlor tucked away. Immediately as I entered the shop I felt a welcoming vibe along with a sense of nostalgia. An old school barbers chair depicting the history sits to the right while a refreshingly clean and cool waiting and working area invite you in. I was immediately welcomed and told to sign in at the bar. Yep you heard that right the bar. So straight to the back I went. Now Judge all you want, it was 11ish in the morning and yes I had to get a beer. Sure I could have gotten coffee but what would have been the fun in that? So I saddled you to the bar, prefer a nice local Porter, a struck up some great conversation with the barkeep. Behind me was a cute couple playing a game of chess, while listening g to the hustle and bustle of the barbers doing there thing. A couple other people ponied up to the bar and decided to be productive and get some work done while waiting for their turn. Despite elbow busy it was they were running thru clients like a well greased machine. Each patron leaving happily after each cut and shave. Now it was my turn. But wait, what's this? Oh, I didn't realize there were additional chairs tucked away behind the bar. I'll dub these as the speakeasy chairs. Once sat my barber/stylist was friendly, professional and fast. When it was all done not only was I very satisfied with my new hairdo but I was tempted to hang out longer and enjoy another brew. read more

I had a bad experience with this barbershop. I had to wait an hour to get a haircut which wasn't a big deal since I did not have an appointment. But when I finally get called up for the hair cut the barber tells me after cutting only the top that I will have to come back later to get the beard shaped up and trimmed. I've never been told that by a barber but I was like oh well I guess I'll come back later after paying $31 I came 3 hours later and the second guy does my beard and charges $25. I was confused because it saids on their website that beards are $10. When I get Home I look at my $55 hair cut and I realized that the first guy forgot to cut behind my ears and the second guy didn't even touch anything underneath my beard. Anyhow I had to go to the store buy some blades and ended up fixing haircut. If you decide to go after this review good luck. read more

My son and I went to these guys for the first time yesterday looking for a "back-up" barber because my original barber is always booked. I'll just say that I have a new favorite spot downtown and will be going to these guys from now on. The owner cut my hair and did an awesome job. This was also my sons first trip to the barber and they couldn't have nailed his haircut any better!!! We were greeted right away and told how long the wait could be and we put our names on the list. I watched all 4 chairs and each barber knows how to cut a smooth looking fade and they interact with each of their customers. They definitely know how to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. I agree with the comment from the other person about parking but the US Cellular parking lot is across the street. Park in level 2D and you'll come out on the same side as the barber shop. This was my first time visiting Asheville and I thought to myself I'd come into one of the local barber shops to get a cut and hear what's around to see. Started off fine until the end. Tyler, the barber that did my haircut, did not even show how the back of my head looked like after the haircut. I realized a day later why when I had cuts all over the back of my neck... I didn't think much of the harsh pressure he was putting on my neck with his razor at the time of the haircut, but it was a bit bothersome. Turns out he was using a dull razor of some sort and cut me with it. So I did end up with a new cut in the end, but not exactly what I wanted obviously. I dont recommend this barber unless you want to end up having cuts and marks left on you as well. I even tipped him well.. and realized a day later what he had done. This isn't Sweeney Todd. We started using this local business a couple of years ago. They have never been short of AWESOME! I have one caveat to this whole review, typical **Downtown Parking** When you enter, you will be greeted by more than one person. They always ask about your reason for your visit (haircut, shave, neck trim). Once they know the services you are looking for, you are told how many customers are ahead of you. LOVE THIS!! I don't have a lot of daylight to burn. Letting me know that there are 8 people ahead of me....YES! I love the option of returning at a different time. Next...These guys know how to cut hair! When my son was little, I asked for a "fade/taper," the poor kid left with the back of his head shaved. That kind of ridiculousness doesn't happen HERE. Are the services cheap/discounted, nope! NOPE...then MAN why are you using any other barber or chain in AVL to get your hair cut, beard trimmed, or neck shaved? I had a great time reminiscing about the old old barber shop atmosphere when I was a young lad. The warm neck shave is what did it for me. There aren't too many places that offer this type of service anymore. I even let them trim my beard...which was done with caution and they did a top notch job. I believe I will have a beer on my next visit If you don't know what you want they have the expertise to custom tailor what fits you. They even have a shoe shine chair!
