Giving a 2 mostly due to look and amount of items. It's really more like a small Walmart as they have clothes etc plus groceries. I have been going to Kroeger stores since I was a kid in Los Angeles county (it's called Ralph's in CA). It usually is the better nicer store to go to. I don't know what the deal with the staff is (shout out to the staff at our stores in ABQ off golf course on westside) but as opposed to most people we have encountered since moving to New Mexico really awful. My opinion is they are probably kids of the highly paid Los Alamos lab employees (median household income here is over 100k) ie over indulged and under parented. Example (note it was Father's Day) I wanted to order 2 sandwiches as we drove up from ABQ for a short break. First no one came to help, then a really snotty male employee said "oh you have to order sandwiches in the morning". So WTF was this guy even doing there? So if I came in at lunch and wanted a sandwich the answer is no? Dude, this isn't Beverly Hills, or Los Ranchos. It's a tiny city in the middle of pretty much no where. Lose the attitude bro, all he had to say was "I'm sorry it's too late in the day but can I direct you to where you can get other to go food". So I bought sandwich stuff to make our own in our hotel. Cheaper, bigger, better. Kroeger needs to take a look at this store as from the other reviews there is obviously a huge issue. read more

I have lived in Las Alamos since March 2025 and have seen major improvements in Smiths since then such as the wider aisles, larger Bar, polished floors, new restrooms.,Etc.. Problem is management has no idea as to cleanliness. I have sent emails to corporate and personally spoke to two store managers but have seen no results. 1. Restrooms are filthy the cleaning crew has no idea how to clean. I have personally taken some bar Keepers helper and cleaned a few sinks and even shown management the difference, but nothing has been done to resolve the issue. 2. Both Family Restrooms have old doors that have a sign that should show when occupied or not but do not work. 3. The area around the Starbucks is always filthy it needs to be cleaned numerous times a day especially after the lunch hour. 4. It sems it is no one's responsibility to move the plastic shopping baskets from the self-checkout counters to the entrance so customers are forced to proceed thru the exit door to obtain one, although there are always 2 employees standing there because the registers have so many issues, they or the employees bringing shopping carts in could easy move them, I have actually collided with customers checking out with their shopping carts while obtaining a basket. I am sure many customers share these issues but as this is the only large Grocery store in town must continue to shop there. Please share your experiences and maybe Smiths corporate will do something. Hate to post such a negative review but frustrated that Management does not seem to care, only response is "short on staff" well get out of the office and make some changes and get involved. only took me 5 min to make 1 sink look like new. Bring your own needs to Los Alamos & White Rock, NM. Crazy, most unprofessional thing - the Los Alamos store would not enter our script for White Rock to order. Be advised: when you get to the register make sure you are charged what the item was listed at. I have to take a photo of every item that is on sale to prove to the front end personnel what it should cost, especially produce, and frozen food. I don't know why everyone that works there hasn't a clue, no training I guess. And all the employees seem unhappy to be there. Most of the shelves are missing product, even sale items. The deli is dirty, and unappetizing. I gave two stars because they are open and providing jobs. read more

This is the largest Smith's I've ever shopped at, and where the majority of people in Los Alamos shop at as well. Because of this, it is always busy and wait times to check out are always pretty long. Because of the pandemic, they are limiting the number of shoppers, so you might need to wait outside before entering the building. They also are not serving people in the bar, but they do have a good selection of beer and liquor in that area. They are in dire need of more employees, since there have only been 5-6 checkout lines open every time I've gone. You'll also need to bag your own food. Grocery items are constantly getting wiped out and needing to be restocked and the produce here isn't the most fresh. I've had to return a bag of clementines that I didn't inspect carefully because 80% were moldy. The pharmacy also takes forever to pick items up even if you had your prescription filled ahead of time. read more

There is a wonderful beer and wine bar in the back. The bar tender, Amanda, was extremely helpful and made us a custom drinks (she is still trying to find a name for it). Smith's grocery in Los Alamos is by far the worst grocery store I have ever shopped at anywhere in the US or Canada. Ever year it just keeps getting worse and worse! Everyone in town knows this all too well. They think they have a monopoly and from the looks of the long check out lines to do SELF check out (which is about all they support), it appears Kroger corporate can do whatever they want to maximize profits and squeeze Los Alamos consumers. Whenever I can, I now go to the Co-Op or to Natural Grocers in town. Yeah, the prices are a little higher but the quality is there and they do assisted check out.... with a pleasant smile! Only grocery store in Los Alamos unless you want to pay triple so you really have no other choice. Could be an awesome store but the only check outs ever open are the self checkouts & only several are open for some reason even though they have a ton of them. So you end up waiting in line forever. Went there on a weekend and the check out helper was ignoring all the flashing red lights because she was too busy eating her burrito at her little stand in the front of the store. Well isn't this the fanciest grocery store! My husband even commented that it was Whole Foods-esque as we walked by the in-store bar. They have a deli, pizza counter, and more. Half of the store (left) is more than food items like clothing and textiles. The other half is a super spacious market with everything every other store has, but more. We grabbed some pbj items for the ski hill tomorrow and were pleased by the selection and the discount bakery in the back of the store. They also have those mini carts--love those. read more

Overpriced and understaffed. The prices here are consistently higher than their counterparts in Santa Fe, which is where the bulk of my grocery shopping is done now. It's extremely aggravating to see the checkout lines extend to the middle aisle of the store. Am I going to wait 25 minutes to checkout my 6 item? NO! This is an awesome spot to get almost anything. The produce is super fresh and the associates are very knowledgeable and helpful. Like every place nowadays, the shelves are sometimes empty... just ask. They will go to the back and generally find the item you are looking for! They have great deals so signing up for the app is a must! I enjoy perusing through each section as they always have new arrivals and an amazing selection of trial size everything. I did a grocery order for pick up. The pick up location is hard to find. they took 20 minutes to bring my order out. left my order in the sun for another twenty minutes to go run my card. They didn't include some of my items that I was charged for. There were out of stock on a few items. They charged me for those out of stock items anyway. my fruits and vegetables were not in produce bags but thrown loose in the shopping bags and were thrown loose in my trunk. I had to thro away some of the produce due to this. I called customer service and they were rude, I asked to speak with a manager and they hung up on me. I tried to call back and every time I did they answered the phone and hung up immediately every single time for over ten minutes. I don't recommend shopping there or doing pick up. I will never shop there again. I don't recommend anyone else doing so either. but if you do, CHECK YOUR RECEIPT. im curious of how many people they have done this too. its theft but I guess no one there got the memo read more

I was in Denver over the holiday. Needed groceries for the weekend, so we went to King Soopers. Also a Kroger company, but attitude was completely different than Smith's. They were helpful and friendly. They even opened a new check line so we didn't have a long wait to check out. Very different from any Smith's, particularly in Los Alamos, where staff is often rude and unhelpful, if they can even be found. read more

Something is VERY wrong at Smiths in Los Alamos (run by Kroger). When the store first opened around 2015, it was filled with a variety of goods, had fair prices, even had good quality clothing. It stayed that way for a few years. Now in 2024, you only get good discounts if you buy "5 or more," the clothing quality (they only carry DIP and ANGEL mostly) has gone down (thinner fabrics, no more xxl sizes, ugly selection for larger sizes), shelves remain empty, brands are being discontinued, and sometimes the only way to get Smiths card discounts is if you apply their app's coupons. Prices are also very, very high. To check out, you mostly have to do it yourself, and the self-checkout machines make lots of mistakes, so a clerk has to come and clear the error before you can finish checking out. And there are very few clerks and very few "live" cashier lines. Excuses I've heard for all this include "we can't get people up the hill to work here," and "the management office decides all this," and "we can't do anything to fix things." So I guess nothing will happen to improve matters. Los Alamos has lots of shopping problems and Smiths is one of the biggest ones--but it has a captured audience because there is only one other grocery store (very small) in town. Honestly--don't live here if you like shopping and want good prices and variety. One star! read more

I'm excited that Los Alamos has a Smith's Marketplace. You have, dishes, and other non food items to buy. They even have a mini bar were you can Oder beer on tap and wine. You can't walk around the store with it though. They are also doing a kids free fruit section where your child can have a healthy snack while they are with you shopping. My only drawback is that sometimes the shelves are not as stocked as I would imagine and some of the customers are kind of rude. I love the Starbucks, deli section, and the create your own sandwich and pizza area. If you have never been it's a great experience to try. I wish there was more Smith's Marketplaces in New Mexico to enjoy the one stop shop. Watch out Walmart you have some completion besides Target. read more

Nice, clean store with a big selection, but they don't train their employees. Every time I've asked where something is or if something is in stock, or really anything, no one seems to have a clue. Also, the fruit is terrible. Apples, oranges, and such are fine. Don't even bother buying the fruit where they chop it up and put it in clear packaging. It'll say its fresh from that day and doesn't expire for 4-5 days, but 70% of the time it's already rotting or has mold and you won't even notice til you get home and open it. read more

Love the sushi selection and eat lunch here several times a week! They will custom make items for you and add toppings to plates already prepared! The lunch buffet selection is huge and the wood fired pizza is amazing! This is the best place in town to go for lunch especially when you just aren't sure what you want! The cheese and olive bar is amazing! I love getting my free soft serve ice cream cone on Saturdays too. The outdoor back patio on the canyon edge is the best site seeing view in the county and I frequently eat my lunch there. We always take visitors there and usually spend at least an hour visiting in the nicely shaded cool patio with an entire grocery store at our beck and call for snacks and drinks! I especially love it when they offer the beer and wine on the patio. The wine and beer selection is quite tasty and very reasonably priced. The wine and beer bar is truly a great Los Alamos destination on its own and surrounded by the grocery store you get to see everyone in town if you sit long enough! Oh yeah, it's a grocery store too! Smith's Food and Drug Center in Los Alamos is horrible! When you are trapped on the mesa, and held hostage by only one grocer, there is no choice but to shop here. The produce is old, usually moldy, and if not used within 24 hours of purchase, you can toss it out. Weekends the meat market should just close. Lots of people, mingling, and visiting. I sure miss Furr's and Safeway every time I go through the doors Update 5/20/13. Got home with moldy, strawberries and the staff was indifferent to the fact that the produce, fruits, and vegetables are below sub-par. In fact, the employee that refunded by two dollars stated that she refuses to shop at Smith's. It speaks volumes when their employees shop elsewhere. From now on I will shop elsewhere too! Today is Saturday, a popular day to buy groceries. But guess what? There was ONE cashier!!!!!!. This is the third time I have had to wait in a very long line to check out. My ice cream was melted and dripping over the edges of the carton. I have had to throw milk out before the expiration date because I stood in line for so long. Today, I ended up with shredded cheese and a frozen vegetable that I did not select. I am guessing someone else paid for these groceries but ended up in my bag. An employee looked at the long line and said it was ridiculous but didn't offer to open up another cash register. We spend a lot of money at this grocery store and if this corporation is too cheap to hire help, we'll go elsewhere. There are people looking for work so quit being so greedy. Smith's Los alamos was such a great store when they first opened. The employees there were and still are fantastic but the store went downhill quickly after Kroger corporate made horrible changes. One by one all the products so many of us liked disappeared only to have Kroger brand replace. You used to be able to request items be carried but they don't seem to care what customers prefer. SO a group effort is now happening to avoid them. We get a few necessities but have to go off the hill to get the products we want. And even worse, they put in self checkout to keep less enployees which hurts those fantastic employees that we suport. read more

Is there any grocery store God out there for me to thank? This place is like manna for us northern New Mexicans who usually have to travel all over the place for what we need. Grocery shopping used to be a mind-numbing, dreaded chore for me. Ever since this Smith's came to town, I LOOK FORWARD to spending time shopping within its well-lit, clean, spacious interior, populated with nice people and smiling employees who actually act like they (give a sh**) enjoy their jobs, and who somehow make me feel like a valued customer. Where do I begin? Well, among the three entrances, the Starbucks area is our favorite way to enter the store. We love sipping their goodies while doing our shopping. The bathrooms are always clean. The shopping carts are never sticky, and their wheels always work. The expansive beverage section is perfect for grabbing your favorite high-fructose corn syrup drink, or flavorful healthy libation for the glucose-challenged, just before engaging in your shopping endeavors because it is thoughtfully located near the Starbucks entrance. The wonderful cheese bar with every exotic type of the delicious dairy imaginable is so helpful for those special recipes. You don't have to bag your own groceries! There's actually someone there to do it for you, and I don't mean a harried cashier throwing things willy-nilly into a flimsy plastic bag for you to rummage through later only to find your bread smashed or something leaking. The store is well-laid out, and the organic produce section is consistently well-stocked and clean. That's one of the areas where I always see someone working to make sure it stays that way. And the food prices? I compare and compare, and for the value, they are the best around! For the recent Thanksgiving holiday (2015), I went to no fewer than four grocery stores throughout the Santa Fe and Los Alamos areas, and I could have saved myself a whole lotta trouble and time (not to mention a tank of gas) by just going once to this place! The Smith's in Santa Fe (Pacheco St) looked like a demilitarized zone two days before Thanksgiving. The shelves in the baking aisle had been ransacked as if the zombie apocalypse had just begun, and I felt my usually steadfast mind becoming more disorganized as I wandered haplessly about the store, searching in vain for just a few select last-minute items (yes, I had planned to get all my shopping done early to avoid this very mishap). A super-nice young dude went to the back of the store to search for what I needed, and I ended up having to search for HIM just to find out they had nada. I swear that grocery shopping can't get any better than this place. The whole place was clean, organized, and well-stocked the night before Thanksgiving at 9:00 pm. No kidding. I finally found those last minute cooking items I had been scouring Santa Fe for. I found them promptly, right in front of me, in a well-appointed Thanksgiving cooking section that was impossible to miss. Oh, and I love Smith's fuel rewards. I'm going to cancel my Sam's club membership because Smith's gas is much more economical. Wonderful, wonderful store. Can't wait to go back. (yes, I'm serious) read more

I don't want to get my ass kissed but a simple hello, have a nice day would suffice. I would guess they hire a bunch of people from the Valley and they hate the people in Los Alamos there. Excellent selection of fresh produce, both conventional & organic. The wood fired pizza is quite good too and reasonably priced. The in-store beer garden is the best in the small town. A good selection of local and regional beers, with the option to order food from the deli & pizza kitchen onsite. The staff are attentive and professional. The outdoor seating area provides a nice view of the Northern New Mexico Mountains and surrounding area if you want to eat lunch and or drink a bottle or can of beer. Due to the alcohol laws, the indoor pub cannot allow an open glass of beer to be taken out of the pub area that was purchased at the pub; however, a bottle or can of your favorite beverage purchased at the store is legally allowed to be consumed on the patio outside. The only downside is that the wifi access which is hosted by the Mormon-owned Smith's, will not allow access to any alcohol or tobacco-related websites. read more

Worst customer service I have ever encountered. Most of the employees appear to have no work ethic and pride in what they do. In the produce department many items are not marked with a price and often they are marked wrong. In the deli, they have a big sign that says sale price and when you order it and it isn't the price that is mentioned in the sign they say oh that expired a week ago and don't honor the sale price. Management must be to blame for the poor service. Perhaps if they had some competition things would change. I went to the Smith's in White Rock the other day and what a difference! People were friendly and helpful and obviously take pride in what they do. They have closed most of the check out venues obviously to encourage folks to check out by themselves.
