Then a technicien, Amanda, tells me that I need to come back in 2 days, that it is not time to pick up the prescription yet. I say: "Why did your employe tell me to come today when I called last week?", her response: "Did you ask for her name? No? Well, if you don't ask for a name, how do you expect us to train our employees properly, you need to tell us who you talked to." Hum... Am I supposed to participate in employee training? In a second, the responsibility of the error became mine, and I was scolded. Both Amanda and the pharmacist, Stephanie Martinez, told me to go to another pharmacy if I weren't happy with their services. I think that we should be able to resolve a problem rather than part ways, but perhaps this is an old way of thinking. All a client needs is the correct information, then we proceed accordingly. We all have busy schedules. More was said in our exchange and I really hope that things get better, I wish for a good and efficient rapport in the future and, if it is the case, I will re-evaluate my rating to reflect this change. Lenses/frames are quite pricey, but of very good quality. Would like to mention Julie specifically. She has assisted me several times over the years. Last year she caught an omission in my prescription (from university) as there were not prisms noted on the prescription. She made me aware of it, I got a new Rx and then proceeded to have the glasses made correctly. That saved me a lot of money, as I did not have to have the lenses made twice. She is always so cordial, efficient and knowledgeable. I just ordered another set of lenses put into frames and the whole process was smooth as silk. Hope to work with her again.

However, more could be done. I spent half an hour waiting to be seen and after 20 minutes I stepped outside to avoid other patients browsing in the glasses area. After being admitted, I spent another hour in the exam rooms waiting to see the doctor. Staff wore masks when speaking directly to me but otherwise masks hung off ears. Physicians' offices, even eye doctors, need to be hyper vigilant.

He also made photographs of my retina that were no good because my eyes weren't dilated. I looked up whether it was necessary to dilate the eyes before a refraction, and Dr. Google said generally not unless you were far sighted. I am farsighted. I had to return my new glasses to Sam's Club and go in for another exam with my eyes dilated. I also insisted on new photos of my retina, which he did but the office tried to charge me for them. The new prescription was good, but this involved extra trips to his office and Sam's Club (total 4 visits) and was a big hassle. The only reason I didn't rate him one star was that the second prescription was good.

The doctor was very thorough and explained with details the pictures of my eyes that were taken. The receptionist used a computer to find my prescription, the doctor did it manually to verify the computer numbers and afterwards he compared my glasses to his machine. I went next door and after selecting some frame, I got my reading glasses ready in 25 minutes. All on a Saturday morning. Very impressive !

I had to pay $130 for simple eye exam that should have been completely covered by…read moremy vision insurance, because Botwin decided that they had done something "medical" rather than simple eye exam, so submitted claim to my medical insurance (which charges me deductible) instead of my vision insurance. The "medical" thing they did? Noticed I have mild cataracts, and said I don't need to do anything about them. This is the exact same thing I've been told for years by other optometrists who always submitted claim to my vision insurance, which covered the entire cost of the eye exam. Thus I had to pay $130 for them to tell me something I already knew, and that didn't need to be treated. I took this up with person at my medical insurance company, who told me that the insurance company had to go by the doctor's "code" for the claim, but that this "coding" sounded unreasonable to her, since the cataracts had already been diagnosed by another doctor, and aren't causing any problem yet. That person --- who works at the insurance company -- wondered if this was a way for an optometry practice to make more money. I don't know, but I'm not returning to Botwin again.

The ER doc called Seligson directly. Five minutes after I got home -this was a Saturday night - I got a call from Dr. Seligson. He said he wished the ER doc had called the service as he wasn't all call. But he'd called the partner who was on call who would call me. Dr. Seligson said that if I didn't get a call, to call him back. A moment later I got the call from Dr. Hudson who made an appt to see me on emergency basis the next morning. Dr Hudson is a no nonsense guy who is quite direct which could be experienced as rudeness. But it is clear, he knows what he is talking about and I feel I get great care I am really grateful that they are in SF.
