I called Mazda 24/7 roadside assistance. They were able to help contact the best towing service nearby. So far Mazda 24/7 roadside assistance has been great. They stated the ETA to be 45 minutes. Jeffrey from Smitty's stopped by on time or even a bit earlier and was of immense help with the vehicle issue. He helped point out the unusually bad visually looking car battery my almost new vehicle had been installed with. I don't know if everything happens for a reason or not. Nonetheless though I learned a lot from Jeffrey's diagnosis of the issues. Furthermore learned more about my 2016 Mazda 3. As well was able to assist with the jump starting of the Mazda using another vehicle we had. I would have never thought the battery to be an issue. Although it did have some weird ignition starts recently. Something I'll keep in mind if and when financing vehicles again in the future. All in all Jeffrey from Smitty's helped diagnose the issue, and get the car started. I can now drive to work to start my new job tomorrow morning. Picked up my auto in Evanston yesterday. Was told they'd put it in storage overnight, then get it over to my dealership first thing in the morning. It's still not there and when I try to call for an update, their phone is disconnected. This makes me wonder where the heck my car is at and having very low confidence in them as of now. read more

Today I had a schedule pickup between 630am-7am for my Hyundai Accent that wasn't starting the last two days due to the bad conditions of frigid temperatures. This was scheduled the day before for pickup for Friday morning. I had received a text message around 540 this morning telling me that the tow company will be there in a few min! I had called around 615 or so since no one arrived yet to check on ETA. I spoke to a woman named Cyndy. She was very rude and was talking over me. She had told me after she looked up my call and saw I had an order for today. She told me right away no one is coming for three hours without an explanation. I was being rushed off the phone when I said I had received a text telling me the truck was a few min away and was wondering the ETA; and before I can finish my sentence she interrupts and tells me no one is coming out; we are canceling your order and hangs up. I called back and she told me to find someone else and hangs up. I understand today is a busy day like the last two days due to the conditions and emergency calls. However I do not appreciate the rude tone with a customer who was just trying to understand and explain the reason for my call. I worked in customer service for a while and I totally understand the frustration with high call volumes. But I was taught to be patient and work with the customer and listen to the customer before cancelling an order that was not requested. If there was a delay then fine I would explained to the person who answered what we can do or if it needs to be cancelled. I'm just very disappointed. I am a single mother trying to make ends meet and I babysit toddlers including my own and I rely on my car. I am trying to figure out and get things done before I start my day is all. The dispatcher told me that the tow truck would be at my location in 60-90 min ,told us WE HAVE TO BE THERE WAIT FOR THE TRUCK . We used other company before we just left the key in car . After 2 hours ,I called them back. I was put on hold and hung up on 3 calls or disconnected . When she answered the 4th time she said the truck would be there in 5-10 mins ,the 5-10 mins turned into 2 hrs ,2 hrs pass ,I called again ,tow truck finally arrived . Driver told me HE WAS 70-80 miles from us ,no way he can be there in 60-90 mins .WE DO NOT NEED TO BE THERE !! AFTER 4 HRS ,FINALLY TOW MY CAR ! NOBODY LIKES TO WAIT ,4 HRS IS LONG TIME . I WISH DISPATCHER WAS HONEST ,WE DO NOT NEED TO BE THERE . Was sent this service via MaxCare Roadside Assistance, which is generally awesome, but this tow service was the only bad apple (of 3 this year). God awful service. My complaint was initially only about the tow truck driver who did not call me and did not read the detailed description of the location of the car, type written on the Max Care form. I put the address of the nearest building, why they assumed that the car was in front of that building, on the main street, is not even reasonable as there is no parking during rush hours. After calling and getting hung up on, I called back to inform the lady that my complaint was not about her, but she hung up again without hearing it. She just said, "I'm not listening to no complaints." If you are offering a service, you should be open to suggestions. I only yelled to alert the tow truck, which stopped about 50 feet from me, without actually going to the corner I stated, in writing, on the Max Care form. He said he called and that my phone was not working. I just successfully made and received several calls in the past 2 hours. I received a call from Max Care and from Smitty's office, so obviously it was not my phone that was the problem. He only needed to try the call again, or even better, read the supplied form from Max Care. read more

I'm glad that some people have had great experiences using Smitty's services, but I hope they take the negative reviews as feedback for ways to improve their business all around. My roadside assistance contacted them to come tow my disabled vehicle. I called around 12:49 and I was told the pick up time would be around 1:49 pm (this is a Monday afternoon). At 2:05 my roadside assistance calls to see if the job has been completed. Nope, haven't hear from Smitty's yet. So they get on the phone with Smitty's and they come back with an excuse that there's traffic and it will be another 10 minutes. So at 2:35 with no sign of them, I call my RSA and they contact Smitty's. Now Smitty's said the driver had to return to the shop to tweak the equipment to be ready to pick up my vehicle. They apologize and say it will be 15 more minutes. That was at 2:35 and the time is 2:55. Haven't gotten a call from Smitty's or anything. I wouldn't be this upset if they had given me an accurate time to begin with or had communicated any changes to me rather than just expecting me to sit around and wait an extra hour or more. This makes for a terrible experience in an already terrible situation. Maybe they were having an off day, but that does not excuse poor customer service. Communicate with your customers and set real timelines rather than yanking them around. If I have to use my RSA again, I will request that they specifically not use Smitty's. Since my car's tire picked up a screw that caused a flat I needed a tire change and to possibly have it repaired. Because of the good reviews and close proximity to my house, I called Smitty's. The gentleman (I assume Smitty) was very nice and responsive and he promised a tow truck would be at my house soon. The tow truck in fact arrived at my house within the hour and had my car's tire changed very quickly. The price didn't seem that bad but since I've never had this work done before I can't comment on that - I will say that the tow guy was very friendly. He also mentioned having the tire repaired at Smitty's for about 10.00, which seemed relatively inexpensive. It actually cost me $15.00 to repair and put the repaired tire back on but that still seemed inexpensive to me. I agree with Daisy B's assessment of Smity's 'lounge' area in that it is not at all a plushy place - this is an old school car garage that repairs cars. I do see how they would be cheaper then the higher end places and before I'd go to the dealer or even other bigger establishments, I'd go to Smitty's. In fact I am going to inquire regarding an oil change to see how much they charge for that. read more

I wrote these guys a raving review. Unfortunately, I should have waited. This is an update to my previous post. A few days after having my axle replaced I noticed a loud knocking noise and my transmission fluid leaking. I took it back as the axle was under warranty and they tightened up everything (noise went away) and told me the axle seal needed to be replaced. I assumed no charge since they didn't mention any charge and I thought it'd be covered under the warranty but to my surprise it was another $181 ($20 for the part, mind you) for having to go back and take everything a part to replace. They didn't tell me until after completing work, of course. Fine. Paid and left. A few days after this I notice my transmission fluid leaking again (both times to the point of dangerously empty). This time I decided enough is enough and I take it to a shop I trust (but in Arlington Heights) and they find that the transmission cap was loose thanks to the previous, incompetent, worker at Smitty's. Another $30. Oh and the kicker? I find out that when an axle is to be replaced the seal should always be replaced with it (as it almost always gets damaged) and if it's not by accident, the shop should never have charged me for maintenance since it was their mistake. Unfortunately, I will not be back at Smitty's. And if my insurance tries to call them again when I need a tow I will be telling them otherwise. They cost me an additional $211 in unnecessary repair cost due to their incompetence. The sad part is, the original review made ROM...bummer. Yes, the location is pretty sketchy and the atmosphere in the office/waiting room (the couches are bus seats) isn't exactly deluxe, but over the years, Smitty has come to my rescue several times. Today, for instance, I was leaving for a meeting and saw that I had a completely flat tire. I called them on the way to the train, gave them the location of my car, asked them to install the spare and take the damaged tire back to their shop for repair. All while I was miles away. No push back about credit cards ... any of that.. I returned to find the tire replaced and I'm heading to the shop to pick up the tire. Call me a happy customer. read more

Initially I wouldn't have used Smitty's considering I live in Chicago but luck would have it that the tow company on Touhy and Western didn't arrive on the arranged time(2hrs notice). A friend mention how everyone in Evanston uses Smitty's. So I gave them a call and spoke to the very pleasant Pat and she was able to get me a flatbed(per my request) and have someone there in 20mins. Well, my first encounter with Smitty was awesome. My car was in distress in Skokie, so I called my road side service. They sent the nearest and available tow company. So, if you know the type of area Skokie is and if you have been towed by Smitty - you know eye brows were raised when the tow truck pulled into the lot. Smitty arrived with his "side kick' - who was dressed like he jumped straight outta I'm Gonna Get You Sucker - anyways.....hell he made me raise my eye brows. They were very friendly and respectful - not that I expected anything less. Smitty was estimated to arrive within 2 hrs of my call - he arrived in less than 30 mins! When I saw the tow truck I said - will you be able to make it out South - yep I live south of Chicago about 35 miles from Skokie. Smitty said he didn't plan on driving south during rush hour..with a smile he then said let me see if I can fix the car right here. He fiddled with my car for 5 minutes while I talked small talk with he and the side kick; less than 10 mins my car was running! Turned out my gears were out of wack - it looked like the car was in drive but it was actually in neutral which caused the car not to start. I want to express a HUGE, HUGE, THANK YOU for the outstanding service provided to me by Smitty's Auto Service. I own a Brand New 2015 Audi A3 sedan. I hit a huge pothole on Touhy Ave, just west of Western Ave. The Audi has 18inch wheels and low profile tires. BOTH drivers side tires went flat! I called Audi Roadside assistance who then contacted Smitty's. Audi made a great decision to choose Smitty's for their road service. It was Sunday evening at about 7:00pm. They arrived at my car in about 15 minutes, WOW!! Kevin came to my rescue with his flatbed truck. Kevin was very friendly. He handled my car with "kid gloves". You would have thought it was his own car that he was towing..I appreciate the great care he took of my car. Once again, Thank you very, very much. The driver that came was also not very nice, and the first words out of his mouth were "I hope you don't have a credit card because I only take cash." The driver broke a massive tree branch on my property trying to back in without looking as I was trying to stop him and get his attention. Then they lost my car and didn't drop it off at the right location. Got yelled at and hung up on when I called to inquire as to where my car was dropped off. Improper towing! Tow resulted in over $2,000 paid after damage/labor (according to Geico claim and auto repair shop -- AB Marathon, Ashland/Bryn Mawr, 5.0 stars with 204 yelp reviews). Geico dispatched Smitty's for a tow. The truck arrived later than I'd been quoted. The driver attempted to start my car with a jump box (following my own unsuccessful attempts to jump with cables), the car started briefly, and driver had prepared to send me on my way, but my car died again before he left. The driver hitched up the car, and I rode with him to auto shop. When we arrived to repair shop lot, he started the car long enough to help me park it where needed. While driving in the lot, I noticed a grinding/scraping noise I hadn't noticed before. I mentioned the noise to the driver, and asked if it could have something to do with the tow. He brushed away a possible connection between the tow and the noise. After the car was driven just a bit more, he mentioned whatever the noise had been initially, it had gone away, and he left shortly after. At AB Marathon, my car received repairs (alternator and a new battery) for original reason I'd had car brought in. I mentioned the grinding/scraping noise I'd heard, to have the guys check it out, and realized only after speaking with the auto repair shop that my car had been improperly towed. My car is a Toyota Matrix XR, AWD, and had been towed with its front wheels locked and back wheels dragging behind -- towing an AWD like this (I learned) can cause major damage!!! According to my claim statement (reviewed after I'd paid for the less major battery/alternator repairs), Geico ended up paying $2024.37! Luckily, Geico handled this cost (plus cost of rental car), any further communication with Smitty's, etc. read more

They were sent out by Mercedes Roadside - by far the worse experience I have ever had with any auto shop, or car related service provider. They started by telling me someone would be out in 45 minutes. 45 minutes later I called Smitty's back, and was told that they had not dispatched anything, because I needed to fax something in - to be clear, fax never entered into the first conversation, was never something Mercedes mentioned, and is NOT required on the client side for roadside assistance (no one stranded on the side of the road has access to a fax machine...) When I point this out, I was sworn at, hung up on twice, and subsequently told that there was no one to help me 'if I didn't want to be a paying customer', as I'd reminded the woman on the phone (who never gave her name, and wouldn't when I asked) that Mercedes Roadside would pay for it. My roadside assistance contacted this company to tow my car after a blowout. Arrived after more than an hour with the rudest, laziest tow truck driver. Mind you my front tire is completely blown out, but he attaches the wheels to the clamp and of course there is nothing for the clamp to hold on to, so on the way to the service center, the car slipped and the tow bar rode up the front axles and torn the bumper off its clips and caused significant damage. Then the tow trunk driver has the nerve to say he didn't cause that damage. Luckily, I have before and after photos from the tire blowout so will be filing a claim against them. read more

As a single mother, car repair is very stressful to me, as I never know if the mechanic is lying. After a bad experience at Duxler's in Skokie, I was going to Firestone in Skokie, and they quoted me a repair of around $450 plus the cost of an oil change. I couldn't afford that, and decided to drive around until I saw a car place that looked like a REAL car place. I don't need a fancy waiting room, etc. I saw Smitty's sign in Evanston, the place looked like a car place with grease and parts all over the place. I pulled in, asked for an oil change and described the repair problem as Firestone described it. He finished his sandwich, then futzed around with my car for about 20 or 30 minutes, then said "I think I found the problem." Price with oil change: $125. Oh, and Firestone had itemized something like $110 for a part that was needed. Smitty called an Auto Zone, asked for the part, I drove to Auto Zone, paid around $5, and brought him the part. That's a $105 savings right there! Who cares about a waiting room when you can get honesty and expertise. Plus there were two dogs who played catch with me while I waited and another guy told me all about his fishing adventures. The best car repair place ever--especially for women who need a mechanic to help them, not lie to them. read more

DO NOT GET TOWED BY THIS COMPANY!! I was forwarded to this towing company thru my car insurance. The dispatcher told me that the tow truck would be at my location in 90 min. OR LESS. After 2 1/2 hours of waiting in 80 degree weather, I called them back. I was put on hold and hung up on the first two calls. When she answered the third time she just said "hold on". I waited for another three minutes. She then said the truck would be there in 10-15 minutes, which it was. Unfortunately, he had the wrong type of tow truck for my car. They must be very inexperienced or lacking proper car knowledge because I told them during our initial conversation the make and model of my car. I asked the tow truck driver if he could be back in an hour with the proper truck because I was willing to wait another hour. He could not guarantee that he could be back in an hour, so I explained to the truck driver that I would be going with another company. He then said the dispatcher would call me. The dispatcher called me within 5 min. She did not apologize. She just sat there with dead air, so I told her that I would be going with another company. As I was very calmly explaining to her that it is unacceptable for them to show up an hour late and with the wrong type of truck, she HUNG UP ON ME!!! I got into a minimal fender bender and they fixed my roof on the spot, no questions asked, and I was on my way in 10 minutes with a repaired car. I had previously got estimates from other local auto repair shops who were using fear tactics and price gauging, but these folks got right in there and were decent, fair, efficient, and honorable. Don t judge a book by it s cover; Smitty s can get you back on the road in a jiffy, and not break your bank account. Happy to support local people, too! I cancelled the tow after the experience I had was with the unprofessional witch on the phone. Trying to get an estimate of time of arrival, she told me 30 minutes. I told her the location and she proceed to argue about the location. After her rant, she tells me they will be there in 3 minutes and hung up. I called my insurance to tell them and I did not want them towing my car and making money because of HER!!! She yells and hung up on my insurance company. Terrible service. @KIA used these guys to tow my car from my home to the closest dealership. They showed up late. Didn't have the right truck so I had to wait another 2 hours. They said they would call me when they got there. While I was in my house working they came and took my car. Now I'm stranded without a car and I have to figure out how I'm going to get to the dealership. So, I called them up and they put me on hold for 20 minutes. I called back and the woman on the phone said it was my fault. I asked what they were going to do to make it right and she said "Nothing" and hung up on me. #KIA read more

They were supposedly to pick my car up at 730am. When I called to see how far away they were they told me that they wouldn't be here until 10am which is unacceptable since I have to get to work. When I asked why they would accept the assignment the lady asked if I wanted to speak with the boss. I said yes. She said he was not in and that she would cancel the assignment. Then she hung up. There was zero care for customer service. I set this appointment up 18 hours in advance. My car had several warning lights go off -- some of those lights had been for repairs that I had just paid for but did not appear to have been done. I called my insurance company and they called North Shore towing. Needless to say they have that north shore attitude and did not show at the scheduled time. I then rescheduled for the next morning only to have them tell me that they were going to charge me extra for the flatbed, when they had not mentioned that the day before, and that they were four hours behind even though I was the first appointment of the day. The guy at North Shore towing was a real sterotypic jerk. I would never use this company ever again! My insurance company then called Smitty's. They came on time. Go figure right? The driver, Curtis, was polite and kind as all get up. He took the route that I had requested and charged me what he promised to charge me. You go figure. There is actually a company that does what it says it is going to do AND arrives on time? All shucks! When I called in to pay by credit card, Pat, the woman who took my information was extremely polite and professional too! Today, my car battery died out of nowhere on busy Lake Avenue in Glenview. This has never happened to my car before. It was freezing cold outside at 26 degrees while snowing. I contacted State Farm Roadside Assistance, and a representative advised me that she can have Smittys Auto Repair & Towing come to my location and tow my car to Pep Boys of Skokie at 5220 Touhy Ave in Skokie. As soon as I ended the call with the representative, I received a text message that stated I should expect arrival from Smittys Auto Repair & Towing within 60 minutes. While waiting 30 minutes in the freezing cold in my dead car, I decided to call Smittys Auto Repair to get an estimated time of arrival. The employee who answered my call at Smittys advised she never received a fax from State Farm about my situation at all. She proceeded to put me on hold and I overheard her arguing with a co-worker about a completely different tow situation. After listening to her and a co worker argue back and forth about how she needed him to go to some location for someone also in need of a tow in Chicago (which clearly was not about me, while I was on the phone) I decided to hang up and call State Farm back. State Farm was unable to assist me further, so I called Smittys again. The same employee at Smittys told me she still has yet to receive any information from State Farm, and told me to call State Farm again. After being completely frustrated at this point, I decided to take matters in my own hands and find a car repair shop within walking distance of me. I walked in the freezing cold, with my car dead on a side street, and asked an employee at this random car repair shop if he could kindly use his car to drive to my car, jump my car, and bring it to his car shop location. Luckily, he was able to. I then had to pay for an expensive uber ride all the way to Logan Square where I live. I am in complete disbelief that the employee at Smittys could not simply get a tow truck on their way to me the two times I called. The employee neglected to put me on hold or at least mute the line. Instead, I heard her argue with a co worker about how she had someone waiting in Chicago to get towed (which obviously wasn't me). She came to my phone call a few times and said "you're in Glenview, right" and did nothing more than that. read more

Smitty's towed my car to a dealership for repair and never told anyone at the dealer the car was there. They dropped the car on the lot with the cars going to auction! Then they lied and told us the mechanics were on strike so they had no one to hand the car over to- apparently I'm the third person they told this lie to. If you ever want to see your car again- do not use this reckless, lazy towing service. read more

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS - Lack of knowledge, unprofessional, treats their customers with vulgarity and left me stranded on the side of the road! Their driver was completely unprofessional, did not bring the correct equipment, did not listen to my requests (three times), and then blamed ME for not having a spare tire - WHICH WAS WHY I CALLED FOR A TOW IN THE FIRST PLACE. After failing to do his job, and me asking if he had heard me THREE TIMES say I did not have a spare, he used profanity against me. I specifically asked for his name, and he would not give it, and he DROVE AWAY LEAVING ME TO CALL ANOTHER TOW. When I called their manager to ask if it was company policy for their employees to not give their name when directly asked, I was informed this was fine. HORRIBLE. DO NOT USE. read more
