This place is amazing, fair, honest and the owner Warren and his staff are the BEST!! I will give you a small example. My 2013 Mazda CX5 license plate screw broke and I couldn't get it off. I had many people try and nothing. The dealer wanted $175 to get it done as they said the bumper would have to be removed. I went to Warren's, and he personally got it off in under a minute and didn't charge me a dime for the service only $10 for the rust proof screws. Top that!! I won't go anywhere else to service my car. He also replaced my engine for a fraction of the price of others, and it is out on the road in great condition to this day as my kid's car. My 2015 Ford Escape was giving me trouble, making a whining sound that got louder and higher in pitch when the engine rpm's went up. I had gotten a previous opinion from another service station, who told me the trans was in need of replacement (4,000$), so I wanted a 2nd opinion. After making an appointment, I brought the car in, and Warren looked it over. His opinion was that the Turbochargers were failing, and that the oil needed changing. His estimate was somewhere north of 2,000$ to fix all that. He was very professional and intelligent throughout. This was different from the 1st opinion, but still not good news for me. Since the car had 120,000 miles on it, I told him I wanted to talk it over with my wife, that we may be forced to buy a new car. He kindly agreed to all that, (and in the end, we did decide to buy a new car). I paid him the fee he asked for, and I was glad to have his opinions!! All this being said, I just want to say that this business is well organized and well run (I talked with 2 of his guys to check in and to check out and pay. They were courteous and intelligent.) Firstly, while dropping off my elderly, dinged Honda Fit early in in the morning for a pre-road trip check up, Warren was chatting with an elderly gentleman and offering to drive him wherever he needed to go while they changed his tires. Good neighbor, check. Got an electronic update within two hours. When I called for details Warren walked me through what was urgent (surprisingly not a whole lot), what could be postponed til next time, and what could be punted altogether. Prompt, check. This place never ceases to amaze me. The brakes on my Volvo SUV were worn down to the metal. I tried to go to the dealership, but it would be weeks before they could fix it. My husband and I have had such beautiful experiences at Warren, so he thought he would try. They took my car, and the brakes were fixed by the end of the day. However, when my husband picked up my car, Warren informed him they needed a special ethernet cable to fix the brakes. They did not have it so they had to drive to the western suburbs to get it. He ended up having to buy lunch for all his guys. He made a special trip, inconvenienced his team, and spent money on lunch to ensure we had our brakes fixed by the end of the day. The gas prices are always higher than average. When I went there to have my car serviced the first time, the attendant asked for my contact info, so I gave him my mobile # (totally reasonable), but then he asked for my address. I'm not comfortable sharing that info & said so, & it was fine with him & the work was done. The next time I went in, years later, the attendant looked me up in the system & asked for my address. I explained my discomfort & he said they need my address to fix my car, period. That's ridiculous - one thing has nothing to do with the other. So I took my business elsewhere. read more

The service was affordable and quick, which makes it hard to ask for more. Two reasons for a 3: 1. I got the report back about my car and it needed a cabin filter replacement. Would have been nice if they offered to replace the cabin filter (I would have been willing to pay for it) rather than waiting for me to learn about it after I have left. Now I need to return for the replacement or do it myself. 2. The person helping me behind the desk was awkward and kind of rude. One of the best repair shop experiences I've ever had. Warren runs an honest and upstanding business - trust me, you won't go wrong taking your car here. The shop always seems full and he seems to have many repeat customers. Get there at drop off your car at 8am in order to make sure that you're seen. However, the earlier rise is worth it. Since it's connected to a manned shell station, there is a lot of flexibility in pick up/drop off (between 6am and 11pm). I brought in my car preemptively to get the brakes replaced, and Warren did a full diagnostic. When he called to tell me that the brakes were perfectly fine, he even strongly recommended against getting them replaced - even though I had asked for it! Since we were existing customers, he waived the brake inspection fee even though it took time to take off the wheels and drive it around. He gave an honest opinion and really treats his customers well with the hope that they turn into loyal customers. He's never just looking for a quick buck and really earns your trust. I previously went to this business and had a tricky headlight changed by Warren on my old car and happily went back to fix my flat tire this Sunday morning after that experience years ago. Unfortunately, I took my business elsewhere this morning because the cashier told me the wait would be over an hour. I asked him if I could go home and come back and he said no, it's first-come-first-served. When I asked him if someone could at least look at it and let me know whether I needed a new tire or if it could be plugged/patched he said I would have to wait there the full hour before that happened. Now I understand that this place is busy and it's a Sunday. The cashier was just rude, awkward and in need of better training/customer service skills. I went home and ate (I get hangry) and went to another (super fast and $10 cheaper) place down the street and got my tire fixed before I decided to write a negative review for this place because my first experience was so good. Things that would have made me drive back there from where I live (5 min. away) with the wait were 1) the shop could text you and if you're not back in x minutes, you lose your spot 2) the guy would have asked someone to look at the tire for one second to see if it could be repaired (the other shop looked at it for literally 1 second before bringing it back to plug it, I had already found the piece of metal stuck in it). This guy was just totally unwilling to help me in any way and really left a bad taste in my mouth. I've been treated poorly at many mechanic shops as a woman and I'm really disappointed that this shop has been added to that list. read more

After reading very positive Yelp reviews, I took my Kia to Warren's expecting good service. Warren ended up being very friendly and the 25-point inspection came at a reasonable cost. After handing me the bill, he recommended an air filter change and belt replacement for the three main engine belts. He didn't try to pressure me into purchasing anything more and seemed to expect that I would shop around since the parts and labor cost for the two extra repairs was kind of high. I bought the parts myself and took the car to my father-in-law, a professional who would have installed the parts for free. But after looking over the engine, he showed me the belts weren't even close to needing a replacement (and were actually less than halfway though their lives) and the air filter is much less dirty than Warren said. The auto parts store workers were shocked I was purchasing all three engine belts together; they said it's not common to replace all three at once. In addition, the oil level was dangerously low even though we had just paid for Warren's oil change. I had to add quarts of my own oil. All in all, Warren's a nice guy but we felt taken for a ride. read more

Theory: I am a chump for stopping here for gas and a tire fill-up. Evidence: Exhibit 1: Their gas is at least ten cents per gallon MORE than in the city or even the west side of Evanston. Exhibit 2: The window squeegee was warped on the scraper side, so I have horizontal lines on my newly "cleaned" windshield. Exhibit 3: Their air is $1 and I didn't even get to fill all my tires. Surprise twist: After reading some of their five star reviews, I see that I should have asked for assistance with the tire fill-up, as they appear to have very helpful garage staff. Everyone needs a good mechanic, right? Warren is it. He is absolutely it. I stopped to put air in my tires when I discovered a screw lodged in one. (So that's the problem!) I walked inside and waited while the guy behind the counter took care of a lady in front of me. While I waited, Warren (who is actually the owner and the mechanic came out and greeted that lady and remembered a problem she had with her car months ago. Then another guy came in and warren knew him by name. How many mechanics can you say that about? When its finally my turn, I explain my predicament to him at which time I find out that they actually closed 30 minutes ago. As my tire is a simple fix, I didn't want to leave the car overnight so I was content to roll on down the road and try something else. Warren then asks a quick question, realizes its no big deal and offers to take a look at it. He then fixed it in 30 seconds (this guy belongs in the nascar pits)! Then he didn't even charge me for it! Then...get this...I told him I would come back for future repairs and he gave me a FIST BUMP! How many mechanics do that?!?! Bottom line is that warren didn't have to help me with my tire and he didn't have to remember previous issues with a car or customers names but it is absolutely apparent to me that he's an honest guy who's trying to make an honest buck and loves what he does. Finding a good mechanic is difficult. Finding a good mechanic(repair shop) that are honest and not there to take advantage of people who don't know much about cars is even harder. Warren's place is one of this places and Warren himself is the best owner of the repair shop I came across. I took my car to Warren's for the first time in the spring of last year. I needed an oil change and I got it, although I had to wait for a while. Unfortunately, the guy who did the oil change did not tighten the oil pan plug all the way and I found out about it the hard way when I stopped at one of the gas stations while driving from Chicago to Detroit. I got the" low oil" warning, stopped at the gas station and when looked underneath the car found a paddle of oil under the engine. Luckily it was just loose oil pan plug. I tighten the plug and added some oil as I lost quite a bit while driving. When I returned back to Chicago and called Warren, i explained the situation. He did not try to argue or find excuses. Actually he told me that the guy who did my oil change was no longer worked there--i guess the lightly tightened plug on my car was not his first mistake. Warren apologized and told me to bring the car in and he will change the oil for free as well as reimburse the expenses. Even though it was not the best first experience, the way Warren handled the situation prompted me to come back when I needed some larger repairs done. This time everything was done very well and at the cost that is hard to beat (given quality). This time I dealt mostly with Matt and the guy provided superb customer service. Personally I believe that Warren, Matt and the rest of the crew are hard-working and TRUSTWORTHY people who know a lot about great customer service. So, as long as I am in the area and, if I need any work done on my car, I know where to go. read more

This place is great. They are very friendly and EXTREMELY thorough. They really go out of their way to do it right. I took my truck in for an oil change and tire rotation. It took a bit longer than I anticipated, but I felt good because I knew they were taking their time and being very thorough (I could see and hear them - I'm not just assuming). One day I was working at home, and I decided to go fill my gas during my lunch break. What happens? OFCOURSE I lock myself in in front of the gas pump. Luckily enough, I happened to fill at a Shell where there is a service center. I went in frazzled and panicked that I was now a) taking up space during a busy time b) wouldn't make it back in time. I lived a little over a mile away and attempted to call my landlord who I couldn't get a hold of to open the door. What's the saying? When it rains...it pours. I went inside the Shell service station and asked them where I could possibly walk to and find a locksmith or who I could call. These guys offered to help and and two guys walked out and within minutes opened the car door. Day saved! How much did it cost? Nothing. Why? Because they are genuinely nice people and think that making someone's life a little easier in a bad situation is worth it. Another time, I was pulling away from Home Depot and noticed a rickety noise coming from none other than my car. I stopped and noticed a HUGE screw in the tire! It's Saturday evening and it was 20 minutes til closing time, but I went in there and didn't get any attitude. They asked what happened told me that either they could patch up the tire or it would have to be replaced. They patched it right up and how much was it....$25!!! Wow. read more

Another five-star experience at Warren's Shell. I have a Lexus sedan and yesterday the check engine light went on. Rather than take it into the dealership, get a loaner and spend the day waiting for the results, I called Warren. In A few minutes he had identified the problem and simply reset the sensor. He also called the Lexus dealership and verified that the car was still under warranty so that if the problem recurs I know they will fix it at no charge. Wow. Saved me time and money. Took my car to Warren's this past week, was able to drop it off at night with gas station attendant for work the next morning. Warren personally gave me a call in the morning and went point by point on what needed work and why. Very personable, helpful, and informative. He worked on a plan with me on what needed to be done right away and what we could put off til later. This was based on him feeling confident I'd approve of the work done and likely to take my car back there for future repairs. All in all, I felt the shop was trustworthy and would definitely take my car back there in the future. The shop is accessible from the Purple Line for city folk. Warren, my dear, you are a doll. I told you I'd be back soon. Took my car back here a week after Warren helped with an over heating issue for my brakes. When we talked about what might be wrong with them, before he put my car on the lift, and he asked if my brakes sounded "spongy". That didn't seem like the right word but now that I'm driving with my new brakes that was the PERFECT word. All-in-all I had brake pads and rotors changed with an oil change. Paid under the "worst case scenario" quote by a few hundred which I'm perfectly happy about. It seemed more expensive than if I went to a chain store but here's why I'll go back: personalized service, supporting my community by supporting small business, they offered me a ride to work when I dropped the car off (!!!!), reasonable prices, SUPER friendly, AND he looked at my coolant system due to the prior overheating problem. When we discussed the inspection and other things that could be fixed, I really felt like Warren was honest about what could wait and what we should start looking to address next. i'm blown away with how much care he takes not only with cars but with basic kindness and cordiality. I had a friend work on my car to do my tune up because i didn't really have the funds to have shell do it, but i did bring it in to get the ball joints done. I told warren i was having my friend do the tune up and he really encouraged it and even offered to double check her job. then when we dropped off my car to get the other work done, he talked to her for about an hour about car-stuff and told her to come back while they did the ball joints so she could watch. I've had my 2004 Jetta for almost 4 years now. I love my car! However, I have become sick of getting ripped off by VW dealers who claim they have to perform "needed" services (I'm looking at you Autobarn of Evanston). I was scouring Yelp for a trusted mechanic who handles Volkswagens. I saw the great reviews for Warren's Shell and thought it would be worth a try for an oil change. An oil change is a great way to get to know a shop. When I took my Jetta to the Autobarn in February for an oil change they charged me $50 AND gave me a laundry list of $2,500 of "needed" repairs. Granted 3 of the 8 repairs on the list were needed (I took my car elsewhere to have the work done and they agreed the other 5 were not necessary at this time, one of them ever). If a mechanic tells me that one thing needs done and it actually doesn't, I'm pissed. If there are 5 things? I'm furious!!! Not only did Warren's Shell give me their Yelp oil change special ($19.95) they also performed a free 25 point inspection. They said that everything looked great except that I needed a new air filter. Since I was almost a victim the last time my car was in at the Autobarn, I panicked. I said, "I just had my cabin filter replaced a few months ago." He could tell that I was concerned and was super nice!! He nicely explained to me the difference between the air and cabin filters. They gave me a great price on it! He said that I also had a brake light out. When I mentioned that I had spare brake lights in the trunk and asked if he could use those he said, "No problem!"
