The car was in a horrific state after being flooded during the storm. The customer service was just excellent. I had my car detailed after flooding from a recent storm. The job was not perfect but they did a good job with cleaning for the pricey detailing they charged me. The water continued flowing in even after the detailing. Pretty much everything was moved around and not put back in place. The steering wheel, the cup holder, the rearview mirrors. Initially when I turned my car on I got an red screen of death, but fortunately, after I adjusted the steering wheel back in position, it cleared off and got back to normal. My driving glasses disappeared, some items were broken in the process of cleaning. They threw away my wet towels that I was using to clean out the water and some other items which I wasn't too pleased with. It could have been put in a plastic bag instead of taking the liberty to throw away. The garage wasn't exactly near me in the 60626 neighborhood which was a hassle to get to and back. Many of the causes were obviously from the water flooding. Either way, it was cleaned enough to at least get me dried out from the flooding. This company will buy parts from places like Advanced Auto and Auto Zone. they give a lifetime guarantee, but Gateway will recharge you if it needs to be replaced after 12 months or 12,000. I understand and expect to be charged for labor but not parts if he is getting them for free. I spent over $3000 on suspension work. 13,000 miles later it had to be redone. I went to Pep Boys and showed them the the work Gateway had done. I was told to go back to Gateway because the parts were bought at Advanced Auto and they are covered with a life time warranty and all I will need to do is pay for labor. Mike at Gateway told me no I would have to pay for parts. So I went to Advanced Auto and they said the parts ($ 800.00) were indeed covered but I was the secondary buyer and they could only give them to Gateway. I was charged twice for $1785.95 last year and only resolution from Gateway Auto Service was them saying through zero evidence it wasn't true and no further efforts will be made, sue if you want, otherwise thanks for the extra cash. And ironically, we both bank with the same institution so it's clear as day Gateway is in the wrong. Friend had a similar situation happen to him earlier this year. I previously had some work on my truck done here, they fixed my air conditioner last year, and I will be going back again to see Fred for MORE repairs now, as my truck is a piece of crap. This is a great place with honest mechanics. Instead of paying over $300 for a new muffler and parts, I went to a muffler shop and get one for more like $120. At Gateway I also got new headlight, new oxygen sensors, and various other things I don't understand. This may be the worst service I have ever received from a business I dropped my car off for a routine oil change and to have the tires rotated and brakes checked. The fact that their estimate was $200 higher than another local shop for the brake work is the least of the problems. I drove the car home and put it in my garage for the next week. The first time I drove it, it was down 290 and I noticed a vibration that hadn't been there but assumed the tires needed to be balanced. On my way home I notice the vibration was getting worse so I made a note to get it checked out that week. the next night driving through the city I notices a grinding noise at even low speeds. When I pulled over I realized that 2/5 lug nuts were gone and the other 3 were so loose I could take them off with my fingers. When the first employee found me waiting for him at the shop the next morning I was LIVID. He calmed me down, took responsibility for the mistake and apologized. Said they would fix it and the manager would call me. When I called him 7 hours later he denied all responsibility and refused to replace the lug bolts (at a cost online of $4 each) saying instead its common for people to loosen lugnuts and if they had made a mistake the wheel would have fallen off sooner. There are a lot of reputable shops in the city and West Loop, see Ogden Automotive as a good example, this is deff not one of them! It's a shame as I loved the guys on the car wash side but both will lose my business due to this managers terrible judgment. read more

Jackson at Gateway auto handled our car problem perfectly today. He was polite and frank on the phone and answered my questions about getting a new starter for my Saab. He finished when he said he would and was able to locate a less expensive starter which saved me about $150. They gave me a 2 year warranty. As I was driving off the lot, I noticed that the "fill coolant" light had come on. I pulled right back in the shop, they topped me off, and I was on my way in less than 5 minutes. Great job! I gave them 4 stars because the labor is $100/hour. 4 stars for effort, but 1 star for effectiveness in solving my car's problems. I started going to them a year ago because of a strange noise. They came up with several possibilities as to what might be causing the noise, and it wasn't until the third visit that they fixed the source of that, but in fixing that they created another problem. Now I'm being told I need to replace the whole engine, to the tune of $8,000+. I went to another auto shop that I found here on Yelp -- someone that was recommended as being well-versed in import cars. This other shop gave it a thorough looksee and it turns out, some of the problems were easily diagnosed, IF a mechanic had known enough to consult a manufacturer computer that would tell you the problem. Not only that, but the new mechanic said that certain parts looked like they needed replacing -- parts that Gateway said they replaced less than a year earlier. The new guy said that judging from the parts, they were either used when they went in, or the parts weren't replaced at all. Granted, a lot of this is hearsay based on the new mechanic's assessment. But given that a) Gateway attempted several times (to the tune of $5,000+) to fix a problem that they never fully rectified, and b) Gateway never once mentioned incorporating a manufacturer diagnostic that would have identified problems immediately; and c) the parts they said they were replacing were probably used (if they were replaced at all). I think they're OK for straightforward, domestic cars. But for anything vintage, imported, or with a peculiar issue, this is not your place. read more

Make sure to ask LOTS of questions before going to this place. I called before going to get my car's belt fixed to get an estimate on the price. I was quoted $200 which was the same as the other place I usually go to however this one was closer. I brought the car in, and then several hours later they quoted me $1500, for the 5 hours of work being charged around 150 an hour or so. They also added extra charges for AC and heating and something else to do with my belt. I already had my car checked elsewhere, where they did not even mention that "extra" charge for something else for the belt. Obviously, I didn't follow through with this place and before leaving I was charged $60 for the "check" they did. Annoyed that no one mentioned the $60 before, I paid and truly will never want to go back to this place. Be wary of the extra unmentioned charges. Always get a quote somewhere else. read more

My husband and I were looking for a mechanic for our Saab and we found this one to somewhat specialize in this make. Long story short, we went in with a small oil leek from a vacuum pump. We got a very reasonable quote and left our car for the repair. We ended up going back, with the same issue, 5 times! Fred, the mechanic is a man of few words, to say the least. All we heard was that he doesn't know where the leak is coming from and that "he doesn't know what to tell us". How about a little research, Fred? Or offer a refund for a job not done? We were simply given the silent treatment. What a customer service! After the last time and an even greater leak we gave up. Took the car elsewhere and after doing a smoke test they were able to identify the leak origin in an hour. Hear that Fred? A smoke test. To sum it up: reasonable prices are only reasonable if the repair is done. In this case we just threw the money away. read more

They also detail my trucks car and motorcycle. I have been using Gateway as long as they have been open I have been in the west loop for 25 years and this type of business is a great resource to us. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE, they ruined my truck I brought the vehicle in, they took so long to start work on it, they quoted me $500. They showed me the trans fluid that dripped on the hoses, said they needed to replace the hoses, a simple task. The manager said, "the good news is its only the hoses and it's only going to be $500." I questioned if they were sure that that was the only problem, he reassured me it would drive fine after the repairs. I had no choice but to let them fix it, being so far from home and only a mile from my destination for the day. I sat on the couch, I watched the technician spend hours walking back and forth to his tool box. Rather than putting the tools at the foot of the car, he slowly would go back and get a screwdriver, then a pliers .....each time walking at least 3 car stalls to the location of his tools, it appeared he had no clue what he was doing. Again, had no choice, my car was in need of repair. I could tell they were incapable of the job, he was struggling and when everyone was leaving for the day he took the truck for a test drive.... he came back in and said, nope, light still came on and fluid is coming out. I was so upset, I wanted to be at the hospital with my sister-in-law who had a double mastectomy that day, they told me it was a 3 hour job and I was now 5pm and another mechanic started to help the other guy all the time wasted walking back and forth to his equipment. It seemed like they were trying to throw it back together and patch up the job, I know now they had NO IDEA WHAT THEY WERE DOING. They did not diagnose the problem, (which they charged me labor for) they put some hoses on a transmission that would later have me stuck on the highway with a dead vehicle. The next mechanic(transmission specialist) would confirm they did not put the right type of hoses on, which would lead to pressure and explosion. They never took the truck for another test drive, it was after hours and they wanted to leave, they gave me the keys, charged me more than they quoted , said it was safe and repaired. I get to the hospital and the ride was ok(one mile from Gateway) , visit my sister in law and leave. I got right on the highway ten pm to head to home and the truck felt funny, was not driving properly. I drove slow (way under the speed limit for the highway because the car was not right at that point I could have gotten slammed in the back by another vehicle). I stayed in the right lane with my hazzards blinking and after 14 miles the car started to shake, the check transmission lights blinked on and off(which was the original issue in the morning), there was smoke coming from the back of my truck like it was on fire I could not see vehicles behind me. I quickly pulled off to the shoulder on the highway, my truck came to an immediate halt/dead, a car that was traveling behind me was lost in the smoke and (if you look at the traction in the snow picture) came zooming off the shoulder to the right of my dead truck, almost flipped and got back on the road. He almost hit my truck. Needless to say, the Gateway auto mechanics did not repair my car and they let me drive and unsafe vehicle on the road to almost get KILLED. I had a tow truck come and tow me $125 which was discounted because he felt terrible when he saw what happened. He towed me to the nearest transmission store. I was then charged $3750 to fix what GATEWAY AUTO screwed up. If they were competent they would have never put me on the road in a vehicle that was not safe to drive. That being said. I ABSOLUTELY believe that my transmission would NOT HAVE BLOWN if it was repaired correctly at Gateway. They should be liable for the fee of repairing the damage THEY DID TO MY TRUCK, THEY SAID THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED. They should be liable for the towing fee, the fee for lodging that night, a rental car for while the vehicle was out of commission fixing the repairs, work I missed the next morning tending to this disaster. The manager said they fixed the truck and whatever they did to it, led to my transmission being blown up. They should pay the medical fee for my elbow scraping getting out of the tow truck and.... so much more especially the mental anguish from this experience. read more

There wasn't anything horrible about Gateway, but overall the experience wasn't great for a basic car wash and oil change. I specifically asked that they vacuum my trunk, but they left a bunch of leaves in the trunk. When I asked, an employee ensured me that they had vacuumed the trunk and watched as I picked 10-15 leaves out myself. Afterwards I took my car around to the service department. I was told the oil change would take an hour to an hour and a half, but it took three hours. The oil change itself was fine, but I wish they would have told me in advance if they were busy. read more

Have taken both our cars in for work and have found Gateway to be honest, trustworthy and fair. On my first visit, there was an unexpected little snafu but Billy took care of the situation perfectly and has always given me the peace of mind that everything will be taken care of the right way. On my last visit the check engine light was on, and after diagnosing the issue, I was told it's a repair that can wait until the car has to go in for emissions testing. There was an issue found with my car, and I was presented with several options for repair. Their fees are very reasonable, especially for the high level of quality service that the staff at Gateway Auto provides. Now, that is a lot coming from me by me being an extremely critical, extremely cautious, and a very non-trusting person (typical Chicagoan). Stay away from this shop! I brought my car there when I was having issues with my transmission. First, they couldn't give me a quote which I would say is understandable. They claimed that they need to go in my transmission and see what's going on with it. Second, they quoted high for service/hour. And lastly, I took my car out because the quote is more than the worth of my car. I picked up my car 2 days after because I was stuck at work and was not able to pick it up before 5pm. I came back with grease inside my car. The interior was trashed with more dirt in it and used up all of my gas. Now, they could've charged me a minimal fee for consultation instead of trashing my car. My transmission was worst than when I dropped it off and had to pay more for all the damages. Not only are they very close to where we live, but we are able to leave our vehicles overnight in their lot, which is key if you travel frequently. They may not be cheap like a Midas or something, but they are the most thorough and will be upfront about anything that is urgent or can wait (You get what you pay for). Just picked up my Honda Pilot from here. I brought it in because of a clunking sound at low speeds. They gave me a detailed breakdown of the services required to get it fixed. I asked if any of the problems were safety related, they said no. I thought about doing the services piecemeal, they said it was a bad idea and not really worth it. I have been taking my vehicle to this place and more mainly to their other location on Division for over 13 years for maintenance, and checkups ever since I moved to Chicago. My vehicle is a somewhat ancient 1994 Ford Ranger. In the past year I have had lots of problems mainly due to the crappy streets of Chicago, the weather and of course age. In one situation I decided to get a second opinion. That led to a nightmarish situation involving me stealing my truck off off the other place's lot to get it back before they started work on it. (long story don't go to Lawrence Ashland Auto Service)! I took it back to Gateway and had the work done there. Yesterday my vehicle had a power steering fluid leak. I was lucky enough that Gateway was close and dropped it off. Cringing is this going to cost me another huge bill? No! They took care of it as a courtesy! Go to Gateway THEY ARE TRUSTWORTHY, GET THE JOB DONE, AND THERE IS NO BULL. Also they are KINGS IN CUSTOMER SERVICE! They treat me with the utmost respect even in one case the owner calmed me down after I called upset from being in a minor fender bender. They are worth the money and are fair in their assessment of what needs to be done now and what can wait for later. They take care of your vehicle and are super kind and friendly.
